The Press Club of Long Island has been named a National Large Chapter of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists. The honor was announced today at SPJ’s Excellence in Journalism conference in New Orleans. PCLI shares the recognition this year with Florida’s pro chapter. PCLI was runner-up for

National Chapter of the Year in 2014 and 2015. The chapter’s student outreach committee, which has conducted dozens of presentations in local high schools and colleges, was the driving force behind this year’s honor, according to SPJ President Paul Fletcher, who presented the honor to PCLI President Chris

Students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School celebrated International Dot Day on September 15th. International Dot Day was created by author Peter H. Reynolds based on his book “The Dot,” and challenges students to “make their mark on the world.” Students dressed in dot attire and attended a special assembly from Principal

Dr. Denise Toscano. During the assembly, students listened to an online reading of “The Dot” and sang “The Dot Song” by Mr. Reynolds and Emily Dale. Students then returned to their classrooms and participated in a schoolwide dot project. Each student was provided with a colorful dot and wrote or illustrated how they will make their mark on

the world. The dots were then displayed in the main hallway of the school. “International Dot Day is one of our favorite days of the year and we like the fact that it’s in the beginning because we want to inspire teachers to inspire children,” said Dr. Toscano. “We want children to know that they are capable of anything.”

It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into

anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the

festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy. And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone joined officials from the Walt Whitman Birthplace and Assemb. Steve Englebright September 19th in welcoming Chinese scholar Cheng Hong, who toured the birthplace while in the United States for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly with her husband, Chinese Premier Li Kequiang. Professor Cheng, who has been a professor of

English at the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, is considered one of the leading Chinese scholars of American nature writing. She has published two books on the subject and translated several books from English to Chinese. She asked to tour the birthplace because of her appreciation of Whitman as a naturalist poet. Cynthia Shor, executive director of the birthplace,

and Dr. William Walter, chairman of the birthplace association’s board of trustees, officially welcomed Professor Cheng upon her arrival at the birthplace. After her tour, she met briefly with Supervisor Petrone, Assemb. Englebright and Carl Safina, a professor of nature and humanity at Stony Brook University, who gave Prof. Cheng two books he had written.

Honoring Heroes On Monday, September 12th, the Elwood Union Free School District’s kindergarten through second-grade students at Harley Avenue Primary School celebrated and honored heroes at an assembly to commemorate the 15 year anniversary of September 11th, 2001. Students dressed patriotically and local first responders were invited to the school. Local Fire Lieutenant Chris Haack, Ambulance Chief Mike Hoddinott, EMT Donna McPartland, Police Sergeant Jerry Romaine and Officer Mike Caponi took the stage

while Principal Elissa Toubin introduced them. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert joined in the celebration with Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Maureen Hull. The schools mascot, The Harley Knight, made an appearance as well. “Today we want to celebrate and honor our heroes,” said Ms. Toubin. “The acronym for HERO and our mantra for the month of September is Help Everyone Respect Others.” Ms. Toubin invited a group of students to the stage to help with the

Pledge of Allegiance. Students held a moment of silence and Ms. Toubin read the book “September 12th: We Knew Everything Would Be All Right,” written by Masterson Elementary Students in Missouri. During the assembly, students turned to the child next to them and talk about a hero in their life. Harley Avenue Primary School students follow the saying, “We are safe, polite, helpful, kind, respectful and responsible.” To show their appreciation, students presented the local first responders with “Lifesaver” candies.

Three Northport High School students have recently earned the title of semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students Gabriella N. Bica, Zachary Melchione and Sophie V. Testa have qualified to compete for about 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million. The students have been chosen out of approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than

22,000 high schools. All three entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and obtaining high scores. The students are now three of the 16,000 semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program and will continue to compete to become finalists. Principal Daniel Danbusky is incredibly

proud of the three students for achieving the status of National Merit Semifinalists. “It is a true testament to their dedication and scholarship,” said Danbusky. “These three remarkable young adults have challenged themselves in the classrooms of the Northport-East Northport School District during their educational careers and it is truly a privilege to have them among our student population.”

Leadership Training Second-graders at Harley Avenue Primary School expanded their knowledge about leadership and rules at the assembly “How Leaders Make and Enforce Rules” on September 19th. During the assembly, students had the unique opportunity to speak with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert and Principal Elissa

Toubin. They discussed what makes someone a leader and students asked questions about making and enforcing school rules. Second-graders have been learning about citizenship and have been creating rules for their classrooms. “We are hoping that this assembly gives them some further insight as to

how rules are made and enforced in our school community,” said Special Education Teacher Cindy Santoriello. “We also hope that the children develop a further understanding of the importance and purpose of rules. School rules keep us safe and help us to do our best learning.”

Preparing Your Fireplace or Stove for the Season

Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves not only can be beautiful focal points within a home, but they also provide an additional source of heat and can be used to keep rooms or entire homes comfortable without the need for additional and potentially costly heating sources. Just like more modern home heating systems, stoves and fireplaces need to be maintained, and that maintenance includes readying them before winter when they are used more heavily. Ensuring a fireplace or stove is in good working order helps to guarantee efficiency of use and safety during the winter months. Open-flame heating sources carry with them certain risks. The National Fire Protection Association states that, between 2009-2013, American fire departments responded to

56,000 home structure fires that involved heating equipment. The NFPA notes that the leading factor contributing to home-heating fires is a failure to keep things clean, principally from solid-fueled heating equipment. The following are a handful of ways to stay safe as you get ready for another cozy season around the fire: Start with the chimney. Begin by having your chimney thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Creosote can build up inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and becomes more difficult and expensive to clean the longer it builds up inside your flue lining. In addition, animals may have created nest inside of the chimney since the last time the fireplace was used. A professional

chimney sweep should be hired in this situation. He or she will be able to effectively clean the

chimney in a manner that is the least messy and disruptive to residents. Install or check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Operational alarms are essential to preventing injury or death resulting from smoke or carbon monoxide

inhalation. Such detectors are inexpensive safeguards that should be installed on every floor of the house. Batteries should be replaced every six months, and the alarms themselves should be changed every five to 10 years. Inspect the chimney from outdoors as well. Inspect the mortar around any bricks in the chimney and surrounding areas for cracks. If left unaddressed, these can cause dangerous fires. If there are serious cracks, a professional may need to make repairs or the chimney may need to be replaced. You also can have the chimney capped with a screen to keep animals and debris from entering. Inspect the damper. A damper is a

valve or plate that stops or regulates the flow of air inside a chimney. It should be checked prior to the first use of a stove or fireplace so homeowners can be certain it opens and closes smoothly. Clear out flammable items. Move flammable items away from the front of a fireplace or stove. Be sure curtains or other home furnishings are far enough away that they will not catch fire from any errant sparks or flames. Order wood now. Be sure there is plenty of wood for the season. Ask a wood supplier to estimate just how much will be needed, and double-check that the wood will arrive in time for the start of the season. By preparing for fireplace and wood stove use now, homeowners can ensure their winters are comfortable and safe.
