National 9/11 Stair Climb Some will climb to remember a relative. Some will climb to honor a friend. And some will climb to show gratitude for the great sacrifices made 16 years ago. Together, firefighters, police officers and the public will climb the stairs of Belmont Park to pay respects to our nation’s fallen firefighters and to support their survivors. On Sunday, October 1st, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY)
and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) will host the 3rd Annual National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters at Belmont Park. This is the first time the Stair Climb will be held in Nassau County, paying tribute to the 496 Long Islanders who were among the almost 3,000 killed 16 years ago. Of those, 125 fallen FDNY members were from Long Island. “The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation
performs extraordinary work providing resources for the families of fallen heroes across the country,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “By climbing steps each year, every participant not only raises funds to support the families of FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice, they also ensure those we have lost are never forgotten.” Gates open and on-site registration begins at 8:30 am. October, participants will climb the equivalent of 110 stories to symbolize the steps of the World Trade Center Towers. All climbers will receive a t-shirt and a name badge for the firefighter they are honoring. “The National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters is a journey of hope, raising funds to help programs for surviving relatives of firefighters across the country,” said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, Executive Director of the NFFF. “Approximately 80 firefighters die in the line of duty each year in the U.S. and this is a way to let the families know they and their firefighters are not forgotten.” The stair climb is a family event and we encourage you to bring family and friends. An After Climb Party and Races will begin at 11:30 a.m., featuring a BBQ Buffet and unlimited draft beer and soda. There will also be bounce castles, pony rides and fun for the entire family. Hard Workers During the September 13th Board of Education meeting of the Harborfields Central School District, middle school student Omar Lee was acknowledged for his application submission to the Broadcom MASTERS - Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering Rising Stars - National Middle
School Competition. This achievement set Omar Lee apart as one of the 10 percent of top sixth, seventh and eighth graders in the nation selected to enter this competition. This application showed Omar’s commitment to the pursuit of excellence in his education. Along with the student recognition, two staff
members were also recognized for their retirement by the board of education. Judy Doran and Andrew Cacciola, who have long been a part of the Harborfields family, were acknowledged and celebrated for their hard work and dedication to the district.
Northport Student Selected and take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. This test serves as a screening process for the 1.6 million students who enter each year. Starzee, who took the test last October, scored among the top 16,000 students nationwide. Semifinalists will now compete for
the final 7,500 National Merit Scholarships by continuing their academic excellence and by scoring well on the SAT. “I feel really accomplished because I worked very hard,” Starzee commented. “It feels great to be recognized for that hard work!”

Nine Boys State and Girls State citizens, along with many proud parents, attended a recent meeting of Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244 to share, with our members, their experiences with the program. Boys State and Girls State are summer leadership and citizenship programs sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary for high school juniors. Students are nominated by their schools for the program and are interviewed and selected by their local Legion posts and Auxiliary units. The weeklong program allows the students to participate in creating a model state that mirrors the structure of New
York State’s government. The students elect mock municipal, county and state officials as well as a mock state legislature. Both the Boys and Girls programs take place, in June, on upstate SUNY college campuses. This year, the post sponsored a record seventeen high school juniors from Harborfields, Walt Whitman, Huntington and Commack high schools. One of the Girls State citizens, Brenda Mendez from Walt Whitman High School, was selected to attend Girls Nation as one of only two girls from New York State. In July, she joined 100 girls from all 50 states for the prestigious program, learning firsthand about
the inner workings of our federal government. The students uniformly praised the program as being a life changing event and unique learning experience. As their proud parents looked on, the students were presented with proclamations from the Town of Huntington by Post 1244 Boys and Girls State co-chairman Charlie Armstrong. This was followed by the presentation of proclamations from NY State Assemblymen Andrew Raia and Chad Lupinacci as well as Suffolk County proclamations by Legislator William Spencer.
Special School of Distinction On September 14th, administrators from the Elwood Union Free School District attended the Section XI Athletics annual state meeting to receive the School of Distinction award. Robert Zayas, head of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, presented Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and

Instruction Maureen Hull and Director of Athletics and Physical Education Dave Shanahan with the award, both of whom attended the event on behalf of Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert. In order to qualify for the distinction, 75 percent of athletes on all district teams must have a 90 percent grade point
average or better for all three seasons. Only four of Suffolk County’s 69 school districts received this outstanding award. “I commend all the hard working athletes who made this accomplishment possible by putting academics first,” Mr. Shannahan remarked. “Let’s strive to reach this goal next year!”

On Tuesday, September 13th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined Rhonda Klch, founder of the Equity First Foundation, to honor 23 women from across Long Island at the Second Annual Angel Awards at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. The Angel Awards honor outstanding women in the community who go above and beyond to help others. The honorees are able to successfully combine their work, home life, and volunteering to improve the quality of life for residents across Long Island.

Holiday Happenings in Huntington will be Michael DelGuidice, leader of the popular Billy Joel tribute band Big Shot. In addition to playing to sold out crowds at the Paramount in Huntington while leading Big Shot, DelGuidice also tours with Billy Joel, playing acoustic guitar and doing some vocals. Other changes from last year’s Parade and Street Festival include new categories for the popular Gingerbread House contest, limiting the competition to home bakers, grouped by age: Children (under 15 years old) and Adult (15 and over). The finalists in both categories will be displayed in storefronts on New York Avenue, again for a public vote on the 26th, and the finalist entries in both categories will be placed on display in the Town Hall lobby throughout December and January. The display has been a popular attraction for Town Hall visitors.
Many of the other features that have made the day truly special will be back, by popular demand, including the interactive map that people can access online through their smart phones and tablets. The map provides information about participating merchants and any offers they might have tied to the day, as well as parking availability, parade details and a guide to the festival. Any merchant wishing to participate this year can download an application on the Town’s website or on the Huntington Holiday Facebook page. In addition to providing a social media presence the page gives those who are coming to the parade an additional avenue to obtain information. A coupon sheet will be on the page, with deals from around the village for people to print out before the parade and festival; as well as any applications will be up there as pictures for people
to download. The parade, which draws between 5,000 and 10,000 people to the Village, will kick off at 5 p.m. from the Big H Shopping Center on New York Avenue and will proceed north to Main Street and then west on Main Street to West Neck Road. The parade will include competitions for the best floats in several categories, with judging based on how well they follow the theme of the parade, “Merry Melodies.” The friendly competition among fire departments is particularly fierce, because the winning department gets to choose who gets to play Santa Claus in the 2018 parade. Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to participate. Among the popular features returning from previous year’s festivals are musical performances throughout the Village during the day and a scavenger hunt. Organizers
are working on additional features; stay tuned. After the tree lighting ceremony, the festival will continue on Wall Street. A DJ will take over to maintain the festive mood, as children pay a visit to Santa Claus, get their faces painted, play in the bounce houses, or enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate, compliments of Christopher’s Restaurant, Almarco and Huntington Panini or free cotton candy or roasted chestnuts. There will also be holiday crafts and activities at both the Huntington Public Library and Panera Bread, starting at noon. Preparations are underway for the Eighth Annual Huntington Holiday Parade and Street Festival, featuring a new day of the week, an exciting grand marshal, more entertainment and a return of the fun-filled activities that have made it one of Long Island’s most popular family events. The region’s largest light parade will kick off at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 26th, capping a festive holiday weekend in Huntington Village that includes the Huntington Lighthouse Boat Parade on Friday evening and Small Business Saturday. This represents a change from previous years, when the parade was held on Saturday evening and is in response to requests from several Village merchants that the event be separate from Small Business Saturday. Survivor Celebration
Hundreds of pediatric cancer survivors and their family members joined for a day of fun, food, music and inspiration at the fifth annual Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day event hosted by Cohen Children’s Medical Center at Eisenhower Park. A highlight of the program included brief remarks made by young adult ambassadors of the hospital’s “Survivors Facing Forward” program. Spencer Ford, 16, of Queens, was only 2 ½ months old when he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that forms in the adrenal glands. He was declared cancer-free in 2004 and is now a thriving high school junior. In an emotional speech, Spencer told the cheering crowd, “Seeing all my fellow survivors here reminds me of how far we’ve come. I want to say thank you to everyone who helped get me to my 16th birthday. Thanks to the staff at
Cohen, I not only survived, I thrived.” Danielle Cassar, 21, of Levittown, was just 8-years-old when she was diagnosed with stage 4 Wilms tumor kidney cancer. She was officially declared cancer-free at age 12 and is now an accomplished student. Because of what she’s gone through, Danielle is considering a career as a pediatric oncology nurse. “Cancer created the foundation of my life,” she said. “I’m grateful to be alive, breathing and on this Earth. I am not the same person I was before cancer. I am a stronger, braver person now. Cancer proves miracles happen every day.” Joining in the applause for Spencer and Danielle was Charles Schleien, MD, chair of pediatrics at Northwell Health and executive director of Cohen Children’s Medical Center. When asked about the importance of the day, Dr. Schleien said simply,

New Website Unveiled The Long Island Radio & Television Historical Society is proud to announce the inauguration of their newly designed and updated website. The website can be accessed at: https://lirtvhs. org/ OUR HISTORY In 1995, it became apparent that the FAA radio station, once the site of the WWI historic Telefunken radio station, was to be abandoned and destroyed. A movement to save the property was undertaken by Constance Currie and the Sayville Historical Society. Although there was a lot of support, the attempt unfortunately failed after a massive fire destroyed the remaining
buildings. What was left was bulldozed along with the antenna fields. As a result, Constance Currie and Ralph Williams, a renowned radio historian, collector of Atwater Kent radios, and author, encouraged the people who had come together to save the Telefunken site, to create a historical society that would keep the history of Long Island radio alive. The first members were from the Sayville Historical Society, Steuben Society, Long Island history buffs, amateur radio operators, and radio engineers who had worked in early RCA, MacKay, and other radio facilities. Chartered by the New York Education
Department as the Friends of Long Island Wireless History, the historical society eventually became the Long Island Radio & Television Historical Society to reflect a broader interest in the rich and diverse history of communications on Long Island from early wireless through the beginnings of radio and television. Through the years, the society has exhibited in libraries, the Long Island Maritime Museum, schools and the Fire Island Lighthouse. They are currently working with Suffolk County Community College as well as planning exhibits for the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale.
GLOBAL INSTITUTE - The Global Institute at Long Island University held a conference on “The State of Anti-Semitism: Local and Global,” on September 13th at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post. The event, led by former Congressman Steve Israel, Chairman of the Global Institute at LIU, brought national and international leaders together to collaborate with key regional leaders on effective strategies to identify, confront, and overcome anti-Semitism both in our communities and abroad.

Broadway Supports LIHSA In a third celebrity performance, several of Broadway’s top veterans and musicians are spearheading a fundraiser for Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). The production, Broadway Supports LIHSA, will feature popular musical numbers performed by Tony Award winners, nominees and stars of the Great White Way. The event will take place on Monday, October 23rd, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Seymour Weiner Theatre at the LIHSA campus, located at 239 Cold Spring Road, Syosset. This is the third year that Broadway stars have come together to support LIHSA, which is the only Long Island performing
arts high school program that offers world-class training and preparation for students who are interested in exploring and pursuing careers in the arts. Last year’s show sold out. “It is deeply touching for these talented Broadway entertainers to donate their time to put together an unprecedented performance to support LIHSA,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “The evening will not only help raise awareness of our stellar arts programs, it will also provide our current and future LIHSA students the opportunity to see how successful they can become!” For more than 40 years, LIHSA has been a training ground for public school students who want to pursue a career in dance, drama, filmmaking,
instrumental and vocal music, musical theatre, theater technology and visual arts. Broadway Supports LIHSA is being coproduced and co-directed by Jerome Vivona, a Broadway veteran and current artistic director of the American Theater Dance Workshop in New Hyde Park, and Stephen DeAngelis, renowned casting director of the Broadway revival of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice and producer of more than 200 different Broadway concerts in NYC and across the United States. They are working with The Campaign for LIHSA, which was created more than two years ago to help raise funds and awareness of LIHSA. The evening is scheduled to feature a variety of performers with Broadway shows to their credit. Performers will be

The Long Island High School for the Arts Parent Teacher Student Association’s (PTSA’s) mission is to build a community by enhancing relationships inside and outside LIHSA’s walls. With community’s support, the PTSA will work to build enrollment and increase communication among parents, the school and Nassau BOCES.
