The Town of Smithtown hosted free Prostate Cancer screenings at the Nesconset Fire Department last week. The event was set up by Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo, and prostate cancer survivors, Councilman Tom Lohmann and Smithtown Employee Bill Renner. Together with the help of Rhonda Samuel of IMF Cares and Jonathan Andersen, Director of Laboratory Operations for Integrated Medical Professionals, twentythree men were given preventative prostate cancer screenings. In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention. My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to ﬂirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old. When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have

struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance. Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities. Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because

I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth. In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room. In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as ﬂawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy). But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

Each year, 1.6 million students throughout the country are entered into this academic scholarship competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship

Qualifying test. Elizabeth Choi, a student dedicated to both academics and the arts, was named a Semifinalist, placing her at the top one percent of test-takers nationwide. Ms. Choi is now in the running for one of the final 15,000 scholarships. Seniors Yeji Lee and

In 1971, Paul Lauterbur, a chemistry professor at Stony Brook University was eating a hamburger at a Pennsylvania restaurant and had a “Eureka” moment about his nuclear magnetic resonance research and how it could potentially be used to image multidimensional objects. That moment of inspiration advanced his research that led to groundbreaking work toward the discovery of modern MRI imaging in medicine, and a shared Nobel Prize in 2003. Fastforward to 2018, Stony Brook University and the Long Island Section of the Institute of Electrical

and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) are recognizing the late Lauterbur’s achievement as an IEEE Historical Milestone. The ceremony, held at the soon-to-be opened Medical and Research Translation (MART) Building, included the unveiling of a bronze plaque, a presentation by Stony Brook and IEEE leadership, and discussions about new research involving MRI techniques, such as its use for personalized medicine and brain mapping. “Quite simply, the MRI is one of the most important medical discoveries of the 20th century,” said Samuel L. Celebrating Italian Heritage The Annual New York Grand Lodge, Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, Long Island Columbus Day Parade will step off in Huntington on Sunday October 7th. Many members of the NYS OSDIA from across Long Island will join in the festivities marking the organization’s 113th anniversary. The event provides the ideal backdrop to celebrate Italian heritage, culture and the vast contributions made by people of Italian ancestry. Green, red and white will be the colors of the day as spectators are sure to revel in Italian-American pride, while taking in the authentic Italian costumes and listening to the talented high school marching bands. The theme for this year’s parade is Columbus … The Legacy Continues in 2018! Members of over twenty-four lodges in Nassau and Suffolk will be holding their banners and marching with pride during the parade, which coincides with the annual

Long Island Fall festival at Heckscher State park. The Town of Huntington and the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce will host the Parade. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. • Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to

exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. • Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Teacher Nick DeBlanco at the Academy at Milliken Technical Center (MTC) understands the benefits of associations with local businesses. “The partnerships are reciprocal,” said DeBlanco. “Local businesses may provide my students with training, cutting-edge technology, and sometimes donate new or used equipment so students can engage in hands-on learning. The business capitalizes on the donation because they know we will make good use of

the equipment and they will receive better-trained employees to hire.” S.W. Anderson Sales, a local business since 1955 with locations across Long Island, recently sent an 18-wheel truck filled with new and used high efficiency air conditioning (AC) units to the MTC campus in Oakdale. S.W. Anderson is a new business and industry partner with the Academy and Mr. DeBlanco’s program. Mr. DeBlanco met Mike Anderson, president of S.W. Anderson, his sons, Jason and Mike, and Jacqueline Costello, director of marketing in the parking lot of MTC. Students from HVAC, newly certified in using a forklift, assisted in unloading the equipment from the truck. “The HVAC Academy students will have the opportunity to have real-

world experiences working on equipment that is industry standard,” said Mr. Anderson. “I feel we are helping the future of the HVAC industry because technology has become advanced. Yes, the technicians still use wrenches and screws but there are new skills to be learned related to wiring, sensors, engineering, and computer technology.” The partnership goal between the Academy HVAC Program and S.W. Anderson is to prepare students for the workforce and empower them to succeed in the global community.
