I was saved by a rescue after being sent plea after plea Little did I know, freedom wasn’t free I arrived at their home filled with great hope But after one night, they just couldn’t cope Their dog didn’t like me, so now I can’t stay So into boarding I go, sitting day after day

What did I do to deserve to be here? I’ve become the forgotten dog, this is my fear Alive but not living, still stuck in a cage This isn’t supposed to happen after being saved
So I’m here to remind you that I’m still here alone Feeling defeated and giving up hope My spirit is breaking, I try to be brave The forgotten dog, I am wondering why I was saved Sometimes I think death would be better, better than sitting in boarding forever.

The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 14th. The Game Farm is partnering with Natural Earth Farms who will provide a pumpkin patch and farm stand. There will also be craft vendors and special activities, such as face painting, a kiddie hay maze, pumpkin slingshot, pony rides and corn target sponsored by Hurricane Grill & Wings. Anyone who

Golf Outing A Success Angela’s House, a local non-profit celebrated the opening of their third home for medically frail children at the annual Arthur and William J. Pace Memorial Golf Outing. Angela’s House, who assists families with medically fragile and technologically dependent children, honored Long Island University Hall of Famer Ron Lupo at the Nissequogue Golf Club in Nissequogue on August 26th, 2013. The beautiful weather provided for a fantastic day
of golfing and eating the famous Pace’s Steak and Lobster dinner. Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank. Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project. But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin. • Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint. In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities. • Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be
masked by paint. Before adding a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint. • Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake. • Prepare your paint. Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a
roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl, and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can. • Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter. Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.
Tips For Tree Maintenance Many homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefit some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year. In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when pruned, and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. But this type of beetle hibernates in the winter, making this the ideal season to prune oak trees. Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of year, homeowners should learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree. Pruning also may depend on climate, so speak with a local gardening or landscaping professional to
determine when is the best time to prune the trees on your property. Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees. • Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one another can be pruned. Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs. • Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned. • Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground. • Remove dead limbs. Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead,

broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning. • Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/ or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who top trees to prevent them from getting any larger should know that topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches before the tree was topped. Fading Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that. What a difference one week can make, right? I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the
winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.) But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties. Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.
So time to dig out the fall sweaters, store the bathing suits away for another season, and embrace the crunch of the leaves beneath your boots. School is back, football is gearing up and the new fall TV season is in full premiere mode. Doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Not bad at all... Part of the beauty of living on Long Island is that we are fortunate to experience all four seasons – may as well start enjoying them. There will always be something to look forward to, somewhere else you would rather be … but there’s still nothing quite like the here and now.
County and St. John the Baptist DHS. While at this selective program, I met many of America’s future prominent faces. I made many friends, and accomplished a great deal. I was elected City Clerk, County Scribe and even
nominated as my County’s candidate for Boys’ Nation. In addition I assumed the role as Director for the Statesman TV News, as well as the Head Writer for the Statesman Printed News. I would not have been able to fulfill all of these
opportunities without the guidance, support and sponsorship of the Police Association of Suffolk County. This group of men comprised of many, if not all, retired policemen, truly made my dream a reality. They trusted me with their support, and I hope I did not disappoint them. Just last week, I was invited back to the Board Meeting and gave a summation of my experience during my week at Boys’ State. It has been an amazing road, and I am very glad that I found the Police Association of Suffolk County. I would like to finalize this week’s article with a big ‘thank you’ to the Police Association of Suffolk County!

This summer, I was given the opportunity to compete at the American Legion Boys’ State Program. For around 1,100 of Long Island’s most promising leaders, this week away from our parents was a big deal. Even though I was rejected from my first application for the program, I did not lose hope. I was soon referred to Mr. Marco Calise, one of the Vice Presidents of the Police Association of Suffolk County. He had faith in me. At one of their meetings, the board, as well as the entire group, debated upon many boys vying for the position. I am proud to say that I was chosen to represent Suffolk County, the Police Association of Suffolk

Two students from Harborfields High School have been named semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Competition. William Macci and Keith Mills were among the top 1 percent of 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the PSAT exam last October. As semifinalists, William and Keith are among the highest-scoring entrants in the state. They will now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for one of approximately 8,000 National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in the spring. Upon learning of his
honor, Keith said, “I was very surprised – I didn’t know I was named a semifinalist until a teacher congratulated me in the hallway!” William said, “It is nice to be recognized for an achievement that happened so long ago.” Both students look forward to taking the next step in their educational careers and plan to apply to numerous schools each. Keith’s top choices are Brown University, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown University and Lehigh University. He notes he would like to major in math but perhaps apply it toward a career in business. Meanwhile, William will apply to
Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently joined students, staff and administrators from Walt Whitman High School to kick off It Can Wait, an anti-texting while driving campaign sponsored by AT&T. As part of the It Can Wait program, students at Walt Whitman High School watched a ten minute documentary entitled “The Last Text,” which recounts stories of families and students who have lost loved ones or been involved in accidents as a result of texting while driving. “Texting while driving has become an all too familiar end for so many families,” said Lupinacci. “Too often, these tragic accidents could have been prevented by a driver simply by putting down the phone and waiting to text until they’ve arrived safely at their destination. While this is true for all drivers, it hits home especially with young drivers, many of whom are getting behind the wheel for the first time. No text is worth the cost of a life, and I want to thank AT&T and the staff and administration at Walt Whitman for taking the time today to reinforce this message with the students.” From 2005 to 2011, there has been an increase of approximately 143 percent in cell phone-related crashes in New York State. In 2011, there were 25,165. Currently, 43 percent of teenage drivers admit that they regularly

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone recently recognized William Ober, commandant of the Huntington detachment of the Marine Corps League, who was named 2013 Marine of the Year at the New York State Marine Corps League Convention. Under Mr. Ober’s leadership, the Huntington Marine Corps League Detachment #792 is one of the most active on Long Island. In addition to having the detachment perform services for funerals, details, and parades, Mr. Ober has promoted other
activities such as visiting schools to talk to students about the Marine Corps, spearheading drives for wounded warriors and helping in fund raising and support for two of the local wounded warriors. He also supports the Boy and Girl Scouts and a scholarship fund for students. At the September 17th Town Board meeting, Supervisor Petrone presented Mr. Ober with a proclamation that cited his many achievements, dedication, conscientious and valuable support to the Marine Corps League and
the Town of Huntington that earned the admiration and affection of his colleagues and the community he serves so well.

It Can Wait text while driving, according to research released at a recent poster session of the Pediatric Academic Societies. “Today was also special because it provided our school community the chance for open, honest dialogue about a very real public health concern. Texting and driving is not just a teenage issue, it is a nation-wide problem that transcends generations and impacts us all. We are all so accustomed to immediate communication that the temptation to quickly connect with business associates, family and friends often clouds our better judgment. Walt Whitman Principal Ms. Kathleen Acker summed it up best today when she said that no message is as important as the lives of our students, family and friends. We thank Assemblyman Lupinacci and AT&T for taking the time to share that message and remind us all that the text can wait until the car has stopped,” said South Huntington Schools Superintendent, Dr. David Bennardo. “As drivers return to normal work and school schedules, the public must remain particularly vigilant and continue to educate younger drivers and their parents about the dangers of texting and driving,” said Marissa Shorenstein, President of New York AT&T. “We are so pleased New York State Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci and officials from Walt Whitman High School

As part of an effort to crack down on texting while driving in New York, this year Lupinacci joined his Assembly colleagues to unanimously pass A.7739, which was signed into law on June 1. Under the new regulations, probationary and junior license holders would have their permit or license suspended for 60 days upon a first conviction. For a subsequent conviction within six months of license restoration, probationary drivers would have their license revoked for six months and junior license holders would have their permit or license revoked for an additional 60 days. In addition, drivers convicted of texting while driving will now incur 5 points on their license and a $150 fine. In New York, a driver’s license is suspended if it accumulates 11 points over 18 months.

Students from Harborfields High School learned that “it can wait” on September 13th as Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer held a press conference at the school to discuss the dangers of texting and driving in conjunction with AT&T’s “It Can Wait” program. Flanked by school officials, area first responders, and representatives from AT&T and the Suffolk County Board of Health, Legislator Spencer outlined the dangers of texting and driving and the importance of the “It Can Wait” campaign. “We are sending a loud and clear message
which can hopefully save a lot of lives,” he said. “The reason this campaign is so important for high school students is that sometimes there is a sense of ‘it can’t happen to me.’ We can let our students know that we are all susceptible. I thank the Harborfields Central School District for its continuation of this awareness campaign. The district realizes that it’s all about protecting our children.” As part of the afternoon’s events, selected students were able to see for themselves just how dangerous texting and driving can be. Five of Music Institute of Long Island’s (MILI) students were chosen to perform in the Manhattan String Orchestra’s (MSO) 9/11 Memorial Concert. The performance took place on September 8th, at St. Peter’s Church in NYC. This Performance at St. Peter’s Church was of significant importance as the church is located near where the Twin Towers once stood. On September 11, 2001, St. Peter’s Church also sustained damage as a portion of the landing gear from one of the airplanes that the terrorists drove into the Twin Towers, also struck and damaged the roof top this church. This parish played an important role as a staging ground for rescue and recovery operations from the terries attacks on that fateful day. The MSO chamber ensemble, was made up of fourteen performers, five of whom are students at Music Institute of Long
Island. Among the works performed was Mozart Divertimento K. 138 and Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor. Violin soloist for the second movement of Bach’s Violin Concerto was, Michele Ripka, from Syosset and a student of Carol Kushner, at the Music Institute of Long Island in Manhasset. It was also very befitting that another student from MILI performed in this concert, violinist, Marco Motroni age 10 from Manhasset. Marco’s Grandfather perished in the World Trade Center (WTC) attacks on September 11, 2001 and very often prior to going to work his Grandfather would pray at St. Peter’s Church. All of the young musicians performed so beautifully and elegantly. Great Neck resident, Matthew Weinstein, violinist and Ilana Grossman, cellist and
resident from Dix Hills were only 2 and 1 years old respectively when the World Trade Center (WTC) Towers were destroyed. They were humbled and honored to have been selected to perform in this special commemorative memorial concert. Unfortunately, cellist, Monica Furci from Roslyn and a student at Music Institute of Long Island was terribly disappointed that she missed performing at this special concert because she was sick, after she had attended all the rehearsals in NYC. Both Carol and Geri Kushner, Directors of Music Institute of Long Island were gratified that five of its students took time out of their summer schedules to rehearse and prepare for this concert to commemorate the lives of those who perished on 9/11.

Berland congratulated the Greenlawn Fire Department and its junior firefighters for organizing and running its successful 3rd Annual Juniors Muster Drill competition. The competition, held on September 15th at the Greenlawn Fire Department Headquarters, saw a total of 13 teams from eight departments compete in five different events.
HERO ADDED TO RANKS - Mr. David Mordarski, a seven-year veteran of the Greenlawn Fire Department, came upon a serious accident on Pulaski Road on August 2nd. Instinctively stopping to see if the occupants were alright, David noticed a woman in front seat of the car who was unable to exit without help. He was able to remove her from the car just as it became engulfed in flames. David’s timely and heroic actions no doubt saved the woman’s life while simultaneously risking his own!

Ocean To Sound Relay Bethpage Federal Credit Union, a dedicated supporter of health and wellness initiatives on Long Island, announces its sponsorship of the Greater Long Island Running Club’s 28th Annual Ocean To Sound Relay. The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay, which takes place on Sunday, September 29th, will take runners across both Nassau and Suffolk Counties with 120 teams of eight runners each traversing a 50-mile scenic course stretching from the South Shore to the North Shore of Long Island. This will be the fourth consecutive year Bethpage has sponsored the event. Nearly 1,000 runners are expected to participate in the relay, which will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services, money raised from the relay will go directly to support the organization’s Long Island Chapter. Long Island runner Alan End, who founded the relay back in 1985, is the relay director. According to Greater Long Island Running Club President Mike Polansky, “The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is an exciting race for both runners and spectators. Jones Beach State Park and finishes on the grounds of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. 120 eight-person teams will navigate their way through 15 different Long Island townships starting in Wantagh, traveling through Seaford, Massapequa Park, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Woodbury, West Hills, crossing into Huntington and hitting the Long Island Sound in Lloyd Harbor, returning to Nassau County via Cold Spring Harbor and Syosset, reaching Oyster Bay Cove, and finally hitting Oyster Bay. “The Ocean to Sound Relay is one of the most unique and anticipated events of every year, attracting runners from the entire tri-state area,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage. “We’re happy to participate again, and witness some amazing athletic abilities, organized impeccably by the Greater Long Island Running Club, and all for a deserving cause.” There are 15 different categories for runners including men’s, women’s, mixed open, men’s masters, women’s masters, mixed masters, men’s seniors masters, women’s seniors masters, men’s super seniors, women’s super seniors, corporate, law enforcement/firefighter, physically challenged, one person team, and running for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured
mentally, physically and financially is incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. Music For Life Fundraiser Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families. Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team
party affectionately called the “Best Post-Race Party in the Northeast” will take place immediately following the relay at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park on the shoreline of beautiful Oyster Bay Harbor near the finish line, where awards will be presented in each of the individual categories to each member of the top three teams in each category. “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is extremely grateful for the generous support of the Greater Long Island Running Club and Bethpage Federal Credit Union,” said Sara Lipsky, Executive Director of the Long Island Chapter. “It is because of organizations like them, LLS can continue to fulfill its mission - to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.” The entry fee for the Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is $400 per team ($50 per runner) through September 16th, 2013, which covers entry into the race, a special commemorative t-shirt for each runner, and entry into the post-race party. Winterizing Your Lawn Every weekend of the last few months you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead. Winterizing a lawn varies depending on where you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season. • Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort. Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead spots and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees before you begin to rake; otherwise, you could find yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers. Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as
well. Additional debris can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives. • Cut your lawn short. Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October and November. Continue to cut your lawn until there is no visible growth for about two weeks. It pays to give it a short cut before frost arrives so that long piles of dead grass will not smother any new growth in the spring. Also, long grass tends to bend down upon itself, trapping moisture that can lead to fungal diseases like snow mold. • Aerate the lawn. Soil can be compacted over time, especially in yards that see heavy foot traffic. You can rent an aerator from a lawn supply store so that water and fertilizer can reach the soil. • Fertilize. Now is the time to give the lawn fresh food to overwinter and also replenish the strength of the root system. All summer long the lawn has been depleting the soil of nutrition, but autumn presents a great opportunity to strengthen those roots. Consider a slow-release formula
designed for winterizing that will feed the lawn all winter long. • Edge the garden beds. Take advantage of the cooler weather and slow-growing grass to reedge around flower beds. Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will stop growing, the roots will remain viable and the lawn will still be sending out rhizomes and tillers to produce new grass blades in the spring. These can easily encroach on garden beds. Edge now so you will have less work to do in the spring. • Trim hedges and trees. If there are any overhanging tree branches or shrubbery blocking sunlight from reaching the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. Take advantage of your town’s leaf and twig pickup services. • Seed bare patches. Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth. Once you have prepared your lawn for the winter you can bring in any lawn tools that need repair and have them set and packed away for the spring.
