Whaling artifacts related to the history of Long Island are a fairly rare item today. When they do appear on the market, collectors fight hard to acquire them. Items specifically related to Greenport – one of Long Island’s active whaling ports during the 19th century – are even harder to find. So what to do when a group of items relating to one of Greenport’s most prominent whaling families hits the auction block? Collaborate. “It seemed like a nobrainer,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society, “to try and bring together a couple of groups that together might be able to acquire these items,” he continued. Fleming discovered just by chance that the items were being offered for sale at auction by a Floyd descendant. “I emailed the auction house in New Hampshire about something else and they happened to mention in passing that they had these items coming up – I was stunned.” Fleming immediately recognized the importance of the items, having just written a history of the Floyd family and Brecknock Hall for the Brecknock Hall Foundation, where Fleming serves on the board. He began talking with some of his contacts at the foundation, along with Peconic Landing, who owns the hall today. “Everyone was very excited, so we arranged a meeting to strategize

what we should do, with only a few days before the auction was set to happen,” stated Ted Webb, President of the Brecknock Hall Foundation. “I thought this is an opportunity we should not pass up,” stated Bob Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. In the end, everyone pledged a certain amount of money towards trying to acquire the papers. Additional monies were secured through a donation from the Reichert Family Foundation. The auction itself was a bit harrowing. “I was bidding by phone for the group, and there was a great deal of interest during the sale in the items we wanted,” stated Fleming. Nearly all of the items went quickly past their estimates. But in the end, the group succeeded in getting all the lots they were interested in. Among the more important items acquired were the partial account book of the whaling ships “Italy” and “Pioneer,” 1844-1852;

The event benefits the Fund for the Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. Say What? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them

has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices

– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

witnessed the crowning of Homecoming King Jack Wilson and Queen Claudia Maimone. The next morning, the high school’s marching band led the traditional homecoming parade from the Harborfields Public Library to the high school. Cheerleaders, fire engines and student-made floats snaked their way down the street to the delight of all onlookers. Designed around a sports theme, the senior class represented the “Olympic Games” with their float, the junior class designed a “FIFA Soccer” display, the sophomore class represented the “Kentucky Derby” and the freshmen class depicted “NASCAR.” At the homecoming football game, the Harborfields Tornadoes took the spotlight against

the Mount Sinai Mustangs, dominating the opposition throughout the entire game. A special halftime performance featured the talented high school marching band, kickline and cheerleading squad, as well as choreographed dances from each graduating class. To culminate the event, Dr. Rory Manning, the principal of Harborfields High School, Dr. Jami Goldstein and Robert Kelly, the assistant principals, and John Valente, the director of health, physical education and athletics, also took the ALS ice bucket challenge to the cheers of the entire crowd. “I think this is a great community event that brings everyone together,” Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro said.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT - A special Blessing of the Bell was performed by Father Michael on September 14th after the 9:30 a.m. Mass at the Parish of the Holy Cross, Nesconset. The non-working bell was removed from the bell tower and placed on a platform designed and constructed as part of Ian Hallam’s Eagle Scout Project. In addition to the bell platform, Ian created a beautiful garden around the bell. Ian was assisted by his family and members Troop 3. The bell can now be used again to celebrate the completion of Mass while parishioners can enjoy the beauty of the garden.

So Far, So Good College is unlike anything I’ve ever gone through. High school was four years of academic grinding, while college has proven to be pretty awesome. The workload isn’t too bad so far, which has allowed me to get involved on campus. I’m on the rugby team, I’ve joined a few clubs, and I’m writing for the school newspaper. College has not been all work and no play. The unfortunate moniker “Villanofun” has proven false, and I’m having the time of my life. I miss home, however. The new friends I’ve made here

are great and all, but nobody could replace my mom, dad and brother. They are the foundation to what will hopefully be my success. My mom and dad are the driving force in my life. I can’t wait until I see them during Parents’ Weekend, because somebody needs to do my laundry! Although I’m just kidding about the laundry, the idea that I miss the little things about home rings true. I miss my bed. I miss my car. I miss my old life. With that being said, I’m really liking the new life which I have formed here.

The kids on my floor are like family to me, and I’ve only been here a month. We are all in this together, and the communal sense of commitment has brought us closer together. I feel as though we know what each of us are going through, so bonds have become strengthened. The guys on my rugby team have been more than friendly as well. We are a team, and during games I can always expect them to have my back. I’m very excited to see what the rest of my four years of college have to offer.

Harborfields students, faculty and community members beamed with green and white pride in mid-September, as they gathered to showcase their school spirit during the district’s annual homecoming parade and football game. Leading up to the homecoming festivities on September 12th, Harborfields High School students kept their tradition alive by raising funds for a charity organization. for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, will be hosting its “DDI Walk, Run and Ride for Autism,” on Sunday, October 12th, at the Holtsville Ecology Center. The walk, run and motorcycle/classic car rally will help to promote community support for individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said co-chair of the event Charley Hudson. “It is heartwarming to have talented individuals enthusiastically lend themselves to help benefit thousand of fellow Long Islanders.” This year’s event Grand Marshals are seven extraordinary people who for the second year

in a row, spent one week walking 128-miles from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. Raising over $40,000 from both walks, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny, Morgan Zajkowski, Ellen McBurney, Peter Barker, Marita Rausch and Liam Kenny have proved to be worthy honorees. Registration for the 5K Fun Run will begin at 8 a.m. with the run to commence at 9 a.m. The scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park will feature activities for the entire family along the way, followed by a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. and with the walk beginning at 11 a.m. The family activities will continue throughout the day until

2:30 p.m. This year the event will not only feature a Motorcycle ride, but also include classic and show cars, sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $25,000 grant from The Department of Criminal Justice for our consistently outstanding services and commitment to community education and wellness. The check was presented by Senator Dean Skelos to Rosalba Messina, LICADD’s Interim Executive Director and Steve Chassman, LICADD’s Clinical Director. Through these funds, LICADD can continue to expand and enhance the many workshops and programs offered throughout Long Island schools, communities and

In addition to the agency’s work with screenings, referrals to treatment and family education workshops, LICADD’s Criminal Justice System Alliances implement state-of-theart diagnostic evaluations, recommendations and treatment referral services for county attorneys, criminal courts, probation services and the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles in connection with DWI or other substance disorder offenses. For over 58 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed

to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. Charitable Work Honored Suffolk County Legislators Steve Stern and Lou D’Amaro awarded Alexandra “Lexi” Tobin with a Proclamation at the September General Session of the Legislature. Lexi, a senior at Half Hollow Hills High School East, organized two fundraisers for research into Reflexive Sympathetic Dystrophy, (RSD) a debilitating central nervous system disorder

that causes bouts of debilitating pain. Lexi raised more than $115,000, which she donated to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), a leading institution in RSD research. This extremely generous donation enabled CHOP to hire additional physical and occupational therapists, purchase needed equipment and aid a larger number of RSD

patients. Lexi, an avid dancer, also teaches dance to children and adults with Down Syndrome. Despite missing many days of school due to RSD, Lexi is a high honor roll student, a member of the National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society. She is a source of inspiration to all who have the privilege of knowing her.

Two ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School students were acknowledged for their distinguished academic achievements. Kelsey Hackett and Bridget Leighton were among 16,000 students across the nation named National Merit Semifinalists in the 2015 Competition. Kelsey and Bridget placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million entrants in the 2015 competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The two talented seniors will now have the opportunity to continue

in the competition for one of approximately 8,000 National Merit Scholarships. Along with their academic priorities, Bridget and Kelsey actively participate in several after school clubs and extracurricular activities including Chamber Choir, Drama Club, Habitat/Environmental Club, Mathletes, Science Research, Science Olympiads, Knowledge Masters and tennis. Both students plan to continue their educational journey, applying to numerous colleges that offer the academic focus they desire. Bridget aspires to

major in biology, working towards becoming a doctor. Kelsey also plans to major in biology with a concentration in genetics. “We are delighted on the selection of Bridget Leighton and Kelsey Hackett as National Merit Semifinalists representing John Glenn and their fellow classmates,” Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Principal Dr. James Ruck said. “They are both incredibly talented young ladies who have taken advantage of the challenging courses offered and supportive faculty in the district.”

Paintings Raise Funds On September 10th, about 50 seniors from the Bristal Assisted Living communities on LI, ages 75–95, displayed their paintings at a silent art auction that raised nearly $1,500 to benefit Senior Dreams Come True. One third of the 80 paintings in the show, held at Hofstra University, were sold. Senior Dreams Come True was founded by the Melville-based elder law and estate planning firm Genser Dubow Genser & Cona. The charity grants wishes to lowincome seniors in need on Long Island, ranging

from helping someone with every-day financial struggles to granting lifelong wishes. “We were so pleased to team up with the Bristal for this wonderful fundraiser,” says Jennifer Cona, Esq., managing partner of Genser Dubow Genser & Cona. “The art auction engaged the residents by tapping into their creative side and also provided an opportunity for them to help their peers on Long Island who are less fortunate. The money we raised will help us give wishes to more seniors.”

The last wish was given to Anna Castoro, Riverhead, who needed extensive dental work that included several crowns, an extraction and a tooth added to a partial. Anna was thrilled to receive this wish so she can speak more clearly and not be afraid to smile. While the seniors who did the artwork are helping less fortunate seniors, they also benefited by developing their own creative abilities. Esther Teitel, age 95, who grew up in Chicago and now lives in the Bristal in East Northport,

studied art in college. Her artwork flourished in her 70s with the help of many teachers. Esther estimates she has created 75 pieces of artwork. The painting sold at the art auction was entitled: “Bride”, painted from The Bride by George Hitchcock. “I love painting especially because it gives me peace of mind,” says Esther. Myra Lerner, age 86, who lives in The Bristal North Hills, painted as a child and is self-taught. Her first oil painting in 50 years entitled “Trees” was sold at the auction. Myra also does needlepoint,

knitting and crocheting. “I paint because I get so completely involved in the process, which gives me tremendous pleasure and happiness,” says Myra. Classes For Caregivers Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be hosting “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” a sixweek course unique to the Long Island region. Classes will meet on consecutive Mondays from October 20th to November 24th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Administrative Conference Room. This series gives caregivers the skills and confidence to

better manage their own well-being, while assisting loved ones. Caregivers will be taught how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings and locate helpful resources. Attendees will also learn how to increase their ability to make tough decisions and balance their lives. For those who would

Project Lifesaver On Wednesday, September 10th, the Long Island Chapter of the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC) made a $1,650 donation in support of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Project Lifesaver initiative. Project Lifesaver is wristband technology that can be worn by individuals with cognitive

impairments who have a tendency to wander. The device emits a signal that County Deputy Sheriffs can track in the event the individual ever wanders off and gets lost. The donation from the Long Island Chapter of NAIPC, which was raised from two local businesses, i Fix Screens and 101 Mobility Long Island, will

FANS FOR THE CURE - As part of their 8th Annual Baseball Road Trip, which visited more than 170 minor league ballparks, Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure recently stopped at Bethpage Ballpark to commemorate Prostate Cancer Awareness Night. Ed Randall, a longtime sportscaster and Prostate Cancer survivor, is committed to educating and combatting the disease. Striped Bass Tournament On Sunday, October 12th, Star Island Yacht Club will host its 5th Annual Striped Bass Tournament.
