Brosnan building parking lot at 9:30 a.m., and return at 6 p.m. The cost is $91 per person (checks only, nonrefundable, payable to Northport-East Northport Public Library). The intinerary includes enjoying a fall day along the Hudson River, experiencing the history and tradition of the country’s first service academy. The day will begin with a buffet lunch at the historic Thayer Hotel overlooking the Hudson River. After lunch, enjoy a guided tour of the West Point Military Academy. Register in person at the Northport Library. Ticket limit is two per patron. Please bring your driver’s license or other form of photo I.D. to the library.

In the half century since the National Achievement Scholarship Program was created, more than four million Black Americans have entered the program, and approximately 228,000 have received program recognition. Of those honored, more than 34,000 of the most outstanding participants were chosen to receive Achievement Scholarship® awards worth about $108 million. Currently, about 3,200 of these young men and women are undergraduates at 300 colleges and universities across the nation. Since the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s funds will be redirected to provide awards for college graduates, Black American high school students will no longer have the opportunity to enter the National

Achievement Scholarship Program. However, they can still compete for awards when they enter the National Merit Scholarship Program, and they may be eligible to receive awards from UNCF under this new program once they graduate from college. “The history and accomplishments of the National Achievement Scholarship Program are great, and NMSC is proud of the program’s 51 successful years,” said Mr. Timothy E. McGuire, NMSC President and CEO. “Through its partnership with UNCF, NMSC looks forward to the new direction of the National Achievement Scholarship Program and its funding of awards for high-achieving, underrepresented college graduates in the newly-created UNCF Achievement Capstone Program.”

Academic & Artistic Sabrina Qi, a senior at Harborfields High School, has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program and an Award of Merit recipient by the Long Island Arts Alliance. In the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition, Qi was among nearly 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. In result of her high–scoring exam, Qi, along with approximately 16,000 students, was named a semifinalist in

the competition. To qualify as a semifinalist, students are ranked with a selection index score based on their combined scores in math, critical reading and writing. Advancing in the program, Qi will compete to receive the prestigious National Merit Scholarship, as well as college and corporatesponsored scholarships. In addition to her academic success, Qi was among 20 students named an Award of Merit recipient by the Long Island Art Alliance for her hard work, passion for the arts and scholastic achievements. Qi’s impressive application

and talented dance abilities qualified her as an award recipient. Accompanied by her parents and principal, Qi was honored at a LIAA award reception held at Half Hollow Hills East High School on Sept. 9. Qi will also have the opportunity to attend an end-of-the year reception at the Tilles Center for the Performance Arts at Long Island University C.W. Post campus. The district commends Sabrina on her academic and artistic accomplishments!

At 100 years of age, local Islandia women Vida Hopkins Tallon is still full of life! Recently, Vida was joined by Legislator Leslie

Kennedy in celebration of her 100th birthday. While attending, Leslie provided Vida with a special gift! Vida was awarded with an official proclamation, commemorating her for her 100 years of a long, healthy, and amazing life. Vida Tallon was born in Queens, in September of 1915; she raised a family of five with her husband Robert Tallon. Throughout her life, Vida has resided in a variety of places throughout the country, including New York, California, and North Carolina. She spent a majority of her professional career as a

typist for Photonews. Vida accredits her longevity to having a consistent optimistic outlook everyday as well as being a very avid walker; “I would walk everywhere my feet would take me’’ said Tallon during her birthday festivities. Leslie was an invited guest to celebrate alongside Vida. “It brings me such delight to celebrate Vida’s 100th birthday with her! I want to congratulate her on a joyous and incredible life! Ushering in the Equinox By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ok, now it’s official. Autumn can commence. Why? Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise

has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.

‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.

People concerned about breast cancer are now able to chat online with a social worker or breast cancer survivor through a new service offered by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The Adelphi program, the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country and located on Long Island, has been providing emotional support and information to New Yorkers for 35 years. Remembering Terry As they have done every September 11th since 9/11/01, the members of the Dix Hills Fire Department visited the gravesite of their Chief Terry Farrell, also a firefighter with FDNY Rescue Company 4, who was killed along with 342 of his brother firefighters at the World Trade Center. At the St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Huntington, Dix Hills firefighters gathered to pray and remember Terry on this fourteenth anniversary of 9/11.

A crowd favorite was Ms. Crean’s leading of a rendition of “Down by the Bay,” during which the campers lent new lyrics to the popular American folk song. At the end of the farewell concert, the group

Throughout the summer, the instructors and camp counselors worked with the campers to create and practice on instruments made from re-purposed materials, such as art dowels and five-gallon paint buckets for drumming and plastic bottles filled with rice that served as clackers and maracas. Citing a camper who spent her time during the music program creating beautiful works of art, Mr. Licitra explained how music has a positive effect on everyone. He feels this is especially true of disabled children and young adults, like those at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, who might not otherwise be able to communicate their joy and enthusiasm.
