On Tuesday, September 6th, students and staff in the Elwood Union Free School District returned to the classrooms to kick off the 2016-2017 school year. Students were eager to be back with old friends and meet their teachers. Elwood Middle School staff provided students with a first day full of team-building activities to bring the school together and start the year off on a positive note. Students participated in a variety of social bonding activities that included Fast Friends, “getting to know you” Bingo and a penny drop relay. Principal Dr. Hugh Gigante found the day to be a huge success. “Having the opportunity on the first day of school to really sit and talk with students was very powerful,” he said. “We

It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reﬂecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. Hence, my albums full of fun and silliness, of candid

moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Friends may come and go, and the memories may fade over time; but in the many heartbeats in between, perfection can be found. You need only know where to look.

Siblings Advance On September 6th, students Isabella DeBrino (grade 9) and Maxwell DeBrino (grade 8) from the Northport-East Northport School District were selected to be among the top 300 semifinalists at the Broadcom MASTERS 2016 for their outstanding contributions to scientific research. The Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) is the nation’s most prestigious Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competition for middle school students. The competition rewards sixth, seventh and eighthgrade students who follow their personal passions in science or engineering at 300 regional and state

science fairs. Isabella and Maxwell participicated in the the Long Island regional competition, sponsored by the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF), in March and qualified to enter the Broadcom MASTERS by being among the top 10 percent of the highest scoring projects. National semifinalists were selected from more than 6,000 nominees and 2,343 applicants. Each application received three independent readings and evaluations by distinguished scientists, engineers and educators. “This is a wonderful recognition and a well deserved one at that,” said Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Irene McLaughlin.

McLaughlin praised the two students’ STEM teachers, Science Research Program Coordinator Bryan Horan and District Chairperson of Science and Techology Eduacation David Storch for their leadership and support. “Great work all around,” McLaughlin added. The 30 Broadcom MASTERS finalists will be announced on September 20th. Finalists will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC from October 27th to November 2nd to showcase their science fair projects and compete in a four-day STEM competition for awards and prizes, including the top education award of $25,000 presented by the Samueli Foundation.

Celebrating the Start The Northport-East Northport School District welcomed back students on Tuesday, September 6th for the 2016-2017 school year. Kindergartners started the following day at the six elementary schools in the district on Wednesday, September 7th. Throughout the district, students returned eager for the new school year ahead and familiarized themselves with their teachers, peers and school environment. Northport Middle School provided sixth graders with a tour of the building, which included a peek at the schools new garden. “There are few days as

exciting and full of promise as the first day of school, both for our students and our staff!” said Principal Tim Hoss. “Dr. Brown and I, and our entire staff, are looking forward to meeting all of the social, emotional and academic needs of our students.” Students at NorthportEast Northport High School reconnected with old friends and made new ones. The hallways bustled with students finding their classrooms and adjusting to new schedules. East Northport Middle School students got to know their classmates better with special bonding activities inside the classroom.

On September 7th, kindergartners throughout the district were excited to start their first day as they walked off the bus with backpacks in hand. Staff members and principals greeted students as they made their way into the school buildings. Principal of Norwood Avenue Elementary School Michael Genovese is hopeful about this new school year. “First day of kindergarten is always very exciting for the entire staff,” he said. “They come in looking so excited and I feel really good about what lies ahead.”

Building Character Students raised their hands to provide examples of rules and proper behavior in different school settings and also watched a video regarding school rules. Falasco then picked four students from the audience to participate in a special gameshow regarding school rules. Falasco plans to have more “Character Counts” assemblies throughout the school year. “Every month I’m doing one character counts assembly where we talk about acceptance, dependability, civilization and more,” she said. “We

are hoping to grow students into great characters and prevent bullying.” Washington Drive Primary School also plans on conducting schoolwide incentive programs to promote good character habits throughout the year. Teachers will pick students in their classes that showcase these positive habits on a monthly basis and these students will be praised. Harborfields Central School District students at Washington Drive Primary School started the school year off with an assembly to promote good character habits at school. The first “Character Counts” assembly of the year was organized by grade level with first and second grade on September 8th and kindergarten on September 9th.
