Long Island’s leading breast cancer walk, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, will be held on two dates and at two locations, starting on Sunday, October 15th, at Jones Beach State Park, 1 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh, and on Sunday, October 22nd, at Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus, 121 Speonk Riverhead Rd, Riverhead. “With an estimated 70,000 participants at Jones Beach and several thousand more on the East End, Long Island hosts the largest attended event in the country,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, American Cancer Society Communications Director. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive, inspirational event that raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.

Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. Making Strides

The Village of Mastic Beach, New York, has begun a complete village dissolution of all government assets including Village owned real estate. The decision comes after the referendum on November 16th, 2016, when the residents of Mastic Beach voted to dissolve the village; citing rising taxes as the most pressing issue pushing voters towards dissolution. The liquidation of assets

will be conducted through a series of continuous government online auctions. All sales will be coordinated and overseen by Buffalo, New York based online auction company Auctions International. The auctions will be ongoing and continue until December 20th, 2017 or until all items have been sold. “As of January 1st, the Village will no longer exist,” cites Mayor of Mastic

Beach, Robert Miller. “Trucks, automobiles, heavy equipment, landscaping tools, mowers office equipment, and all village owned real estate are among the items people can bid on between now and end of December. The money collected from this auction will go to pay any debt owed of the people of Village of Mastic Beach so that we return to the Town of Brookhaven free of debt.

The first group of items up for auction were posted September 7th of this year, and currently available for viewing and bidding on the Auctions International website www. auctionsinternational.com They are: public works construction equipment, double wide office trailer, office equipment, park benches and a lighted flag pole. Park Renamed “He was a really special man,” Councilwoman Susan A. Berland said. “Every time I would see him, he would just have something nice to say…He was The Rev, he was everybody’s chaplain, who would make you feel better. This is a place that makes people feel better. It is a beautiful venue, a beautiful space. People come, they are happy here…Rich would like nothing less than that.” Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards said, “Thank you, Huntington Manor, for allowing us to do this. This is

about something that ended in a tragedy, but what he is about and what you are all about is what is good about Huntington Station. Any time all of us are with any of you, it is comforting to know that you are there serving our community. It is comforting to know that you will be there to save us.” Town Clerk Raia spoke of seeing Holst at functions involving the fire police and how he sought her out to make sure she did not feel alone. “He always looked out

for everyone,” she said. Speaking to his widow, she added, “Noreen, you will always, always be in the hearts of the Huntington Manor Fire Department, as well as us.” Born in Rockville Centre, Holst was educated in the Uniondale school system. After graduating high school, he attended Nassau Community College. He served in the U.S. Navy, on the U.S.S. Saratoga, an aircraft carrier assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. His job was on the flight deck, directing fighter jets in for safe landings on the desk. He spent four years in the Navy. Returning home, he married his high school sweetheart, Noreen, and began what would be a 36-year career with the Long Island Lighting Co. (and with LILCO’s successor, National Grid). He and Noreen bought a home in Huntington Station in 1976, and two years later, in 1978, he joined the Huntington Manor Fire Department. In doing so, he followed in the footsteps of his father, who was a former chief of the Uniondale department. He was a member of the Huntington Manor Department for 31 years. For 26 of those years, he served as the department chaplain and was the Captain of the Fire Police. Members of the department, his co-workers and his friends called him “The Rev.” His license plate reflected that: HMFD REV. Speaking for the fire department, First Assistant Chief Jon Hoffmann said, “Those who knew Rich knew an extremely kind and caring person as our chaplain.” Referring to the plaque noting the park dedication that is mounted on a large stone, he added, “The stone will stay and watch over people in this park as he did us for many years.”

Supervisor Frank P. Petrone, members of the Town Council and Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia joined with the Huntington Manor Fire Department September 9th in renaming Depot Road Park after Richard Wm. Holst, who suffered a fatal heart attack while responding to a fire near the park exactly eight years ago. The Board and the Fire Department unveiled a plaque in Holst’s memory, mounted to a rock, and a sign with the park’s new name. Holst, 60, was an honorary chief and longtime chaplain for the department, lived near the park and the shopping center at Depot Road and East 17th Street, across the street from the park. On September 9, 2009, he saw smoke coming from the shopping center and reported the fire. He went to the scene and helped do the building walk-around with the chiefs to locate the fire. While engaged in that task, he collapsed, suffering a heart attack that proved to be fatal. “It’s our honor today to rededicate this park in his name, for his heroic efforts and for his giving to the community continuously,” Supervisor Petrone said in his remarks delivered to an audience of about 100 firefighters and members of Holst’s family, including his widow, Noreen. “He has been involved with this park, and the shopping center he responded to is right nearby. What an appropriate opportunity for us to rename a park.” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said, “Depot Road Park is a special place. It is one of those hidden gems. If you drove down Depot Road, you wouldn’t know it was here. A real hidden gem in our park system, much like you firefighters, much like honorary chief Holst. He was a hidden gem in our community. He was here to serve.”

Spirit and Support On Saturday, September 9th, Harborfields Central School District held their homecoming parade and football game culminating the weeklong celebration of Harborfields spirit and pride. Following Friday night’s pep rally, where seniors Sam Iglesias and Laura Davis were crowned king and queen, students put the finishing touches on their floats for the parade Saturday morning. This year’s float theme was music, and students got creative with their designs. In grade order, themes included electronic, jazz,

country and rock. On each float and each class t-shirt, students included cancer awareness symbols to keep the cause at the forefront of the event. Those on each float collected donations from the crowd to fund research for childhood cancer, which is near to the Harborfields community’s heart. Much of the community came out for the parade to support the students and waved and cheered as they traveled along their route from the Harborfields Public Library to the high school. At the homecoming

game, the crowd anxiously awaited the start of the game against Kings Park. Some crowd members had large cutouts of players’ heads and shook them wildly and cheered when the team ran out onto the field. The Harborfields cheerleaders, marching band and kickline all worked together in pepping up the crowd, and there was no lack of spirit in the stands that day. LI Hops, a 43-acre farm located in the North Fork wine region of Long Island will again host the Long Island Fresh Hop Fest - the largest fresh hop fest on the east coast - on Saturday, September 23rd. Remembering Victims A. Berland, Councilman Eugene Cook, Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards, Town Clerk JoAnn Raia and Receiver of Taxes Ester Bivona shared the honor of reading the list. A bell chimed as each name was read, and a rose was placed in a vase at the foot of the 9-11 Memorial in Heckscher Park, where the ceremony was held. The color guard included members of the Huntington Detachment Marine Corps League #792,

the Elwood/Commack Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9263; Greenlawn American Legion Post #1244; Northport American Legion Post #694; and the Greenlawn American Legion Patriot Riders. The roses were placed by members of the Town’s Veterans Advisory Board. The roses were donated by Brueggemann’s Funeral Home in East Northport.

swimmers raised $4,000 for the cause, and both teams committed to the event again next year. Swimmers were thanked and congratulated by Suffolk Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. “Your commitment and support will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer,” Spencer said.

In addition to the swim itself, a scientist from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory attended the event and spoke with the participating swimmers to explain the importance of continuous support and research for cancer. Students were thankful to be able to help such an important cause.

Hockey Helps Councilwoman Susan A. Berland attended the 4th Annual “Hockey Helps” 24-Hour Marathon for Charity held at the Dix Hills Ice Rink and accepted a $5,000 check for the Town’s Project Play Summer Program which offers a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, sports, gardening, reading programs, special events and field trips for children ages 4 to 12.
