The Elwood Union Free School District was excited to welcome students back for the start of the 2019-20 academic year on Sept. 4. At Harley Avenue Primary School, parents kissed and hugged their children as they prepared them for their first year of kindergarten. Some students posed for photos outside the school’s main entrance, holding chalkboard signs detailing their likes, dislikes and future plans. While doing so, other students filed off their
buses and followed the “yellow brick road” into the school where they were met with highfives from teachers and staff. Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert was also there to welcome students back. Classrooms were bustling with students putting away their supplies, engaging in relationship building activities and chatting with friends. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Maureen Hull explained that the first day
was focused on icebreakers and transitions. Students at Elwood Middle School and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School also returned to class on Sept. 4. The halls were bustling with students trying out their locker combinations for the first time and teachers pointing freshmen in the direction of their classrooms. The Elwood community looks forward to another exciting and successful school year.

The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and

Students reconnected with old friends and made news ones at Norwood Avenue Elementary School on Sept. 5. Sharon Stummer and Holly Johnson started the day with a routine morning meeting. First graders sat “crisscross applesauce” in a circle on the floor as they took turns introducing themselves, along with a special stuffed animal that they brought with them. Students in Jennifer O’Connor’s class started the day off with a special visit from Principal Michael Genovese, who congratulated them
on their behavior, which earned them two points towards a future “compliment celebration.” Ms. O’Connor said that for every 10 points, the class can vote to have a pajama day, dance party or even earn extra time during recess. In Adam Wessinger’s class, fourth graders learned secret handshakes with their classmates as a way to break the ice and meet new friends. At Bellerose Elementary School, students participated in similar activities, unpacked their supplies and enjoyed

Students at Dickinson Elementary, Fifth Avenue Elementary, Ocean Elementary, Pulaski Road Elementary, East Northport Middle, Northport Middle and Northport High School all settled into their routines nicely. Kindergartners will return to school on Sept. 6. The district looks forward to another successful year.

BOE Welcomes New VP terms as a board member, including serving as the board president for the 2016-17 school year, was appointed to the board back in August to fill a vacancy left by former Board President Julia Fried. “It definitely felt like getting back on a familiar bicycle,” he said. “Being in the meeting last night, I think there’s great things going on in Elwood and any way I can help accelerate
that I’m excited about.” Recently appointed Board President and former Vice President Becky Marcus, welcomed Mr. LaMena’s “wealth of knowledge,” noting that it will be an asset to the board. Mr. LaMena was equally welcomed by the remaining board members as well as Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert.

The 40th Annual Greenlawn Pickle Festival will take place on Saturday Sept. 21 from 10:00-4:00PM at the John Gardiner Farm, Historic Landmark, located at the Northeast corner of Park Ave. and Little Plains Rd. Greenlawn. The Greenlawn-Centerport
