Alone in a Bowl: My Saga By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime. No – dare I say it – bath time. Nothing. Where did she go? Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra flakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting. And the suitcase… what was that for? Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that
is, and then this giant bettashaped vitamin was placed in my bowl with promises of food coming shortly. When? It’s already been at least a month. Time tends to fast forward when you live in a bowl. But, wait… here it is – a flake. And another. Where did they come from? No human in sight, but this little vitamin seems to be melting into food! Oh thank goodness! She didn’t forget about me after all. I wonder if she’ll ever be back? {826 Days Later…} I hear a noise! The front door… the light… MY HUMAN HAS RETURNED! Oh boy, oh boy! If I had longer fins, I’d give her the biggest hug ever! Oh, and here comes the good food,
my gourmet pellets, with a few extra thrown in – how sweet. She didn’t abandon me after all. But where did she go? I see the suitcase… but no presents? No souvenirs for Buddy? And what’s this about “bath time” now? She’s been home five minutes and already this nonsense about cleaning out the remnants of the vitamin from my bowl. Good grief. There had better be a good explanation for all this. I expect a special trip to the pet store this weekend to pick out a new toy… and extra food… and at least a week’s notice the next time one of these “vacation” things takes place. Better yet, I expect to be invited along.

Chef AJ, age 11, was a huge hit at April’s All Kids Fair where she prepared waffles with fresh whipped cream and fruit. The newly crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie, will be in attendance, along with her counterparts from 2013 and 2014. Edith Jason, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, will be teaching a yoga class. Mrs. Jason, age 80, has been teaching yoga since 1986 and currently teaches several times a week at Winthrop Hospital. Mark Brier of Laughs at the Library and Howard Newman of Jokesercise, where one can get a little exercise along with enjoying a comedy show, will be on hand to entertain at separate performances. In addition, there will be a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, menopause, and podiatry. This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the five years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products

The free workshops aim to help mature adults reduce the risks of falls and improve their quality of life. Stepping On* “Stepping On” is a sevenweek model program that focuses on improving balance and strength, home and community safety, vision, safe footwear and medication review. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the program has proven to reduce falls for participants by 31 percent. Paralympic Winner East Northport resident and 2015 Northport High School graduate, Mike Brannigan, just returned from the Parapan American Games in Toronto, Canada, where he won a gold medal in the 1,500m run and set an American Meet record as a member of the U.S. Paralympic team, when he visited with Legislator Rob Trotta. Mike also ran a mile in four minutes and three seconds and was
off the world record by approximately 15 seconds. Mike Brannigan was a star member of the school’s Cross Country Track team and was named the Health Education Student of the Month. He was also featured in the February 2015 issue of Sports Illustrated as its High School Athlete of the Month. Mike is training to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio
De Janeiro, Brazil. Legislator Trotta congratulated Mike Brannigan on his many accomplishments. “You are a great role model for all young people and I hope that you will instill in them your motivation and drive to excel in whatever they do. I know that you will continue to enjoy many more successes in your lifetime,” said Legislator Rob Trotta.

This award recognizes a special individual, family, organization business or foundation that exhibits the unique
qualities that further the goals of philanthropy, demonstrates leadership in motivating others to participate in philanthropic endeavors and has personally committed time, effort and financial resources to one or more charities. David Okorn’s accomplishments will be celebrated at Philanthropy Day 2015’s Awards Luncheon being
held on Friday, November 13th at the Huntington Hilton, 598 Broadhollow Road in Melville. David M. Okorn has been the executive director of LICF since 2010. He began his career at LICF in 2008 as the foundation’s director of advancement and donor relations. Previously, he was the senior vice president of development and external relations at Abilities, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of adults and children with disabilities. Prior to that, he held positions as director of community relations at KeySpan and executive director of the KeySpan Foundation. Dave received his B.S. and M.S. in Business Administration and Energy Management at New York Institute of Technology-Old Westbury. He is a member of the board of directors of the Long Island Volunteer Center and the Better Business
Bureau Foundation. Recently, he joined the board of Donorsrus, a new nonprofit organization that provides a charitable gift card program (expected to launch Fall of 2015.) Dave is a strategic and innovative leader with over twenty five years of progressively responsible experience in foundation management and corporate/public relations. His expertise in multi-year financial planning, budget reporting and cost reduction strategies continually procures success and he inspires excellence across all aspects of his career. Dave and his wife Martina live in Hauppauge with their two children. members in memory of Nicolette, who passed away from an overdose at 20 years old. With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the
