Preparing for a new school year and future educational challenges, the Elwood School District offered professional development sessions for teachers during August, including “Basic Spanish and Supporting our English Language Learners,” a two-day course presented by Nicole Gendjoian that covered basic Spanish for

communication with ELL students in the classroom as well as ways to understand these students to build relationships with them and make connections with their homes. “We also talked about specific strategies to use to support all students in the classroom,” said Gendjoian, a Spanish

teacher at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School who created the course three years ago. “There were a lot of group discussions and sharing. Every school in the district was represented, so it was nice to hear everyone’s experiences and perspectives from all different levels and content areas. I think they got a lot out of it.”

The Argyle Theatre (Mark and Dylan Perlman, Managing Partners; Evan Pappas, Artistic Director), presents the hit Broadway musical Cabaret with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff, based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood. Performances begin Friday, September 17th for a limited engagement through Sunday afternoon, October 24th at The Argyle Theatre (34 West Main Street, Babylon, Long Island). Cabaret is presented through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals. Directed by Evan Pappas, with choreography by Sara Brians and music direction by Jonathan Brenner, the cast will feature Dana Costello as Sally Bowles, Jon Peterson as The Emcee, and Andy Tighe as Cliff Bradshaw, with Fred Frabotta as Herr Schultz, Brian Owen as Ernst Ludwig, Suzanne Grodner as Fräulein Schneider, and Lilly Tobin as Fräulein Kost, as well as Alexis Semevolos and Conor Stepnowski. Mark and Dylan Perlman, Argyle Managing Partners, shared “We are thrilled to reopen The Argyle’s theatrical season and close out The Argyle’s second season with the multiple Tony award winning classic Cabaret.” They went on to say, “Come join us at the Kit Kat Club in Berlin in 1931 where patrons search for escape while the seeds of intolerance are fomenting. Be captivated in a time and place where nothing is certain except for one’s dreams.” In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920’s draws to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff Bradsaw, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken by English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. First presented in 1966, the ground-breaking musical Cabaret won an impressive 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, which then culminated into a smashing Oscar Winning film in 1972 winning 8 Oscars. This classic Kander and Ebb score is entertaining, thought- provoking and Broadway musical theatre at its best. “Cabaret still remains one of the greatest musicals,” exclaimed director Evan Pappas. “The craftsmanship and the storytelling by Kander, Ebb, and Masteroff is masterful!” He ended with, “We have just the cast and creative team to present it.” Cabaret will play the following performance schedule: Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Saturday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. with Special Added Performances on Wednesday evening, October 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday October 21, at 2:00 pm. Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-proﬁt organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. They are so excited to be hosting their ﬁrst Community Share Day on Saturday, September 18th with the Huntington Assembly of God! This will be a fun and engaging new way for their kindhearted, caring donors to connect with the families that they serve in their beautiful Huntington Station community. How does it work? You register online for a time slot. Then you neatly pack your car with the items you would like to share with the community, such as clothing, toys, household items, unexpired nonperishable food and any other items in good/new condition. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or stained, missing buttons, or broken zippers. If you would like to give gift cards to families you may, but they ask that no cash is given. Also, no large electronics or furniture please. You can sign up for a two-hour time slot, where they will have the cars set up “trunk-or-treat” style in the parking lot. Community members will be able to walk around to the different cars and browse. You must stay by your

request.

They will serve hot dogs, chips and soda to all who attend and they truly hope that it will be an enjoyable time for both our donors and community members! They are still in need of participants! Rain date is September 25th. If you are interested in volunteering with HHRM, there is a new opportunity available! The organization is looking for volunteers to help at the mission with their distributions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tasks include sorting, folding, hanging on racks, rolling racks in and out of the building, helping with pantry bags on occasion and being available to help people ﬁnd items for their families. Two Events to Support Veteran Suicide Awareness

On September 18, 2021, The Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation will host two unique events on Long Island to create awareness for Veteran Suicide Prevention. Leading fellow Marines, Veterans and friends, Chad Lennon, a Major in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, will hike 22 miles carrying 22 pounds to represent the 22 Veterans who die by suicide each day. Lennon is asking Americans to join him in person or online virtually in memory of our service members who die every day from suicide. In addition to the walk, Long Island runners will join in unity by running a 5K at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, NY. Starting and finishing from the park entrance at 5789 Middle Country Road, the run will engage a new and unique audience to bring additional awareness to this important cause. Walk4Valor and Run4Life events are sponsored by the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation with support from Major Charles J. Sanders, NYARNG, Commander for Southold American Legion Post 803. Both fundraisers will support the education of military children and Veterans. It is the foundation’s commitment to bring hope to living Veterans and their families. Net proceeds will support the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation Scholarship Fund for children of military families and military spouses.

Top Shooter Fundraiser To Be Held At Suffolk County Council (Scouts BSA)’S Baiting Hollow Scout Camp Suffolk County Council (BSA) and the Ronkonkoma Rotary Club presents the “Top Shooter Fundraiser” on Sunday, September 26 from 10:00am – 2:00pm at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp (1774 Sound Ave, Calverton, NY 11933) at a cost of $50 Per Shooter and $40 per Registered Scout. All proceeds help benefit the Scouts and programs of the Suffolk County Council. Top Shooter Fundraiser is open to Suffolk County
