Dr. Kenneth Bossert began the day by welcoming everyone back and sharing his vision, including a presentation on the many new opportunities that await this coming year. Board of Education President Mike LaMena also welcomed the staff back and shared his thoughts on the start of the year. “The beginning of this school year is especially significant for Elwood,
as it is the start of a new chapter for our district under the leadership of our new Superintendent, Dr. Bossert,” Mr. LaMena said. “I have absolute confidence that Elwood is embarking on an exciting new chapter that will allow our students to achieve unprecedented levels of success in the classroom, on the athletic fields and across a broad spectrum of extracurricular activities and the arts.”

After hearing welcoming remarks from Dr. Hugh Gigante, Elwood Middle School Principal and President of the Elwood Administrative Association, Joseph Pushee, President of the Elwood Teachers Alliance, and Maureen Hull, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Regent Roger Tilles addressed the Elwood staff. Regent Tilles shared his thoughts on a variety of important educational issues, including Common Core, student assessments and professional evaluations. He also told an inspiring story about how the influence of one music teacher he had when he was a child ignited his love for the arts. Regent Tilles shared that the impact this teacher had on him was ultimately the inspiration for the Tilles Center for the Performing
Arts. “Any one of us has the opportunity to change the world,” said Regent Tilles. “By doing what you love to do and doing it well, you can touch the lives of tens of thousands of others and
you may never even know.” Staff members concluded the day at their respective schools, meeting with their building leaders and preparing for the students’ first day on Tuesday, September 6th.

and he made a concerted effort to have adult league teams assist in the development of youth soccer. Although some LISFL clubs responded, it was not until Jack Maher of the Deer Park Celtics wrote to Ryder to request the formal formation of the LIJSL that the ball really started rolling. Ryder appointed Maher the first Commissioner of the LIJSL. Eight boys teams kicked off the new league in December 1966 and played throughout that winter to complete a 14-game schedule by March 1967. This was the same winter that the very first Super Bowl was played (won by the Green Bay Packers over the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10). Prior to the 1967-68 season, the non-profit LIJSL formalized its administration with Ron Campbell being named

My Summer Slumber Buddy here, checking in on behalf of my Human, who has just returned from one of those “vacation” outings I detest so much. You would think, after over 18 months of residence, I would have earned the right to tag along on a trip; but alas, Buddy the Betta was abandoned yet again, left to my own devices. Don’t get me wrong, the solitude is nice on occasion. No Human faces pressed up against the glass making fishy faces, no incessant tapping on the counter to get my attention, no bath times to contend with… but eventually, a fish does become lonely. Every morning, I would wake from my slumber expecting to be greeted with the usual love and adoration – and breakfast, of course. But nothing. Days passed, and all I found was a measly dissolving chalk-like thing with flakes embedded in it. At first, I thought it was a pillow; but eventually, I realized this was the best option on the menu for me for the time being. Speaking of bizarre sleeping
choices, it seems that every time my Human overhauls the tank to clean my gravel and my beloved plant, she never puts things quite back where she found them. Gone are my cozy nooks to snuggle in; replaced instead by mounds of pebbles. This has forced me to explore other options, among them, the top of the filter, where one strong current can send me sailing to a spot of rest just below the water line. Comfy indeed. Of course, when my Human forgets to replenish my water from time to time, I find myself hanging off the side, seemingly in a state of unrest. But not to worry, I can sleep just about anywhere, in any position. That includes laying on a leaf, wrapped around the filter tube, or just about vertical, face pressed against the gravel. Just turn my light off and “Do Not Disturb” – a fish needs his beauty rest, especially one as lovely as me. The last time I had nestled in for the night – or morning, as it were – I was rudely awakened by calls of “bath time for Buddy!”

Being the stubborn sort, I wrapped my fins firmly around the filter tube and refused to budge, gleefully watching as my Human tried to nudge me out of my corner with the back end of a spoon. Only when she began to lift the filter out with me on top of it did I realize that this was a losing battle. Little did I know that this particular bath was in preparation for the vacation I was not to be invited on. Talk about adding insult to injury. On a somewhat positive note, my Human did leave the light on for me, since I seem to flit around with more ease when my tank is illuminated. Better yet, when she returned, I was rewarded with “bonus” flakes for being such a good boy while she was gone – you know, not getting sucked into the filter or anything. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. Harborfields Welcomes The Harborfields Central School District held their New Teacher Orientation Program on August 30th to welcome 18 new teachers into the district. New faculty members met at Oldfield Middle School, where they learned policies and procedures and discussed instructional practices to
meet the learning needs of all students. New teachers will join several different education departments. These include specialties in special education, music, health, social studies, mathematics, library and school counseling. “We’re pleased to welcome 18 new teachers to our Harborfields
family,” said Assistant Superintendent of Administration and Human Resources Dr. Rory Manning. “It is clear that our new teachers are excited to become an integral part of our school community and are looking forward to working with the wonderful students of our district,” he said.

Faculty Orientation On August 31st, the Elwood Union Free School District welcomed eight new teachers and three Academic Intervention Service tutors to the district for the 2016-2017 school year. The new staff members were introduced to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, as well as principals and administrators. Led by Director of Humanities Pamela Fine and Director of Math, Science and
Technology Eileen KellyGorman, the group participated in icebreaker activities to help them get better acquainted. Ms. Fine discussed the importance of icebreakers in the classroom and stressed the use of accountable talk when leading discussions with students. “We are very excited to have these new teachers and staff members join our team here in Elwood,” Ms. Fine said. “We are
always looking to identify candidates that will propel our instructional programs forward and create new opportunities for students to learn.” The group also learned about the technology resources available to them, best classroom practices and special education regulations. They also took a bus tour of the community, led by Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s Assistant Principal Leroy Cole.

Craig Ludin, who has Down’s Syndrome and has been playing for HBC since he was a young boy in what is now known as our TOPSoccer Program, has received so many medals from the Special Olympics that he was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. In 1980, Rocco Amoroso started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program to improve discipline on soccer fields. To this day, after every LIJSL regular season game, the match referee grades teams based on cooperation of players, coaches and fans, overall game conduct and player appearance. The East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center recently hosted its annual celebration honoring the facility’s dedicated volunteers. The celebratory event offered the facility’s staff members an opportunity to thank and show their appreciation for the volunteers who play an invaluable supporting role and continuously go the extra mile for the
residents. The volunteers being honored have all selflessly donated their time to ensure residents are happy, comfortable and entertained as they go through the health and healing process. The facility honored Lorraine Bustamante with the Volunteer of the Year award during the luncheon. Mrs. Bustamante leads the Our Lady of Grace volunteer group - who has been coming to East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation for 30 years to guide Catholic services. A Family Franchise Expands Its Brand

The in-store kiosks allow customers to tailor the menu to their own tastes with an assortment of ingredients, including a choice of bread, cheeses, sauces and toppings. These items are then made to order and are served tableside by McDonald’s staff. The more traditional menu items are still available as well, displayed on digital menu boards behind the counter. Mwaffak Kanjee, General Manager and Vice President of McDonald’s New York Metro Region, stated that this new program has garnered widespread positive feedback so far from both the customers and those employees being trained at these two Long Island locations. While visiting the Farmingdale restaurant, it was apparent that the customers enjoyed the added convenience of being able to customize their order using the new menu items and sit
down with their families to wait for it, rather than having to stand in line. The employees exuded a friendly, positive attitude and seemed genuinely happy with this new opportunity for growth presented by the company. Founded in 1960 by Leon Weil and Irv Klein, the first of their McDonald’s locations opened in East Northport. After Weil’s retirement, Klein expanded the business to include four additional restaurants by 1971. Six years later, Klein’s son-in-law, Jonah Kaufman, joined the team as the company’s first Director of Operations. The following year, Jonah became an owner/operator, resulting in the creation the Klein-Kaufman Corporation. The Klein-Kaufman Corporation grew immensely throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. It earned several outstanding restaurant awards, including the prestigious “Golden Arch” Award for outstanding restaurant operations and contributions to the McDonald’s corporation. In 1996, Klein retired, leaving full ownership of the restaurants to Kaufman, who formed Kaufman Enterprises.
In 2005, Jonah continued to expand the business by bringing on his son, Josh. At first, Josh’s main role was the Director of Operations. Together, Josh and Jonah grew their business, culminating in ownership of sixteen restaurants on Long Island, making the company one of the largest McDonald’s organizations in the United States. Today, Josh, 36, is the majority owner of eleven of the sixteen restaurants. Irv Klein is now 86 years old, living in West Palm Beach, Florida, and is thrilled to see where his family has taken the business he began more than half a century ago.

Home Safety Checks to Complete Today A new kitchen or a bathroom remodeling job might be dream projects for many homeowners, but the right home improvement project at a given moment is not necessarily the most glamorous project. Sometimes safety upgrades around the house must take precedence over more popular projects.

In the United Kingdom, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents reports that there are

Replace the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at least twice per year, and test them to make sure they’re in good working order at least once per month. The National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing hardwired smoke alarms every 10 years. Battery-operated alarms may need to be replaced even sooner. Many carbon monoxide detectors work for five to seven years. Check the back of alarms for a date stamp that indicates how old the product is and when it expires. Safety checklists are an important part of home maintenance. A proactive approach can prevent both injuries and damage to the home.
How to Recognize Water Damage in a Home
Water damage is a potentially costly problem that can afflict any home. Old homes tend to be most susceptible to water damage, and that damage can manifest itself in various ways. The following are some telltale signs of water damage that should give prospective home buyers pause and compel current homeowners to seek professional assistance as soon as possible: Stains Many prospective home buyers
Deteriorating Wood Wood around windows or doors that is deteriorating may indicate water problems. The wood might be deteriorating because water is infiltrating the wood during
storms. Baseboards and molding that is dilapidated or beginning to deteriorate may also indicate water damage. Buckled Drywall or Wood Drywall or wood that is buckled or beginning to buckle is another potential indicator of water damage. Drywall buckles when it gets wet, and that is often a sign that there is a leak behind the drywall. Severely buckled drywall will feel as if it has ridges. Wood also buckles when it is exposed to excess moisture, and this can usually be felt when walking on the wood barefoot or in socks. Odor Sometimes water damage is best detected by the smell test. Homeowners who notice
the smell of mold or mildew in rooms that previously never emanated such odors might have homes that are in the early stages of water problems. The water damage might be behind the walls, where mold is beginning to form thanks to water damage. Older homes tend to be musty, but call in a professional if you notice that mustiness if more pungent than usual. Water damage is a potentially costly problem, especially if it goes unnoticed for months or even years. Homeowners and prospective home buyers should be on the lookout for signs of water damage before problems escalate and require expensive repairs.

Superintendent’s Conference Day The Harborfields Central School District gathered on September 1st at Oldfield Middle School for Superintendent’s Conference Day. With school kicking off on Tuesday, September 6th, the day consisted of staff members preparing for the 2016-2017 school year. Teachers and administrators met in the cafeteria for breakfast before heading into the auditorium where faculty members heard from multiple speakers. Board of Education President Nicholas P. Giuliano welcomed staff with a speech about
Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro, who will be retiring in January. Giuliano spoke about Todaro’s career in education and praised her work. “During her years, Harborfields has been among the top ranked high schools on Long Island, top ranked in the state and top ranked across the nation,” he said. Deputy Superintendent Dr. Francesco Ianni will assume the superintendent position in January. Ianni spoke about his excitement for transitioning into the superintendent role. “What makes me feel
comfortable and secure about this decision and this position is the fact that I have all of you,” he said. “I know we are going to do great things and we are going to continue to move forward with the district.” Throughout the day, faculty members went to their assigned locations for important information regarding their particular department. Grade level meetings took place, as well as special area meetings for music and art, physical education, special education, English as a new language (ENL) and the nursing staff.
Amazing Year Ahead Northport-East Northport School District staff members came together on September 1st and September 2nd for the district’s two Superintendent’s Conference Days, which provided preparation tools for both elementary and secondary school staff before the first day of school on Tuesday, September 6th and the first day of kindergarten on Wednesday, September 7th.
On September 1st, faculty met at NorthportEast Northport High School and first heard from Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer. “We’re just excited to get started and the teachers are excited as well,” Banzer said. “It’s a great group of faculty and staff and we’re looking forward to a great year.” During both days, faculty went to their respective buildings to prepare for the start of the year and also
participated in a number of department meetings and professional development workshops. School nurses received training for both CPR and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED). The second day of the conference involved faculty meetings, training for elementary level teacher aides and assistants, secondary level curriculum and assessment groups, and secondary level special education team meetings.

The sixth-grade students will use the computers to access assignments, collaborate with their peers on projects and
download and upload their schoolwork. Teachers will also have the ability to interact with students digitally, commenting on assignments and providing guidance with studies. The 2016-2017 school year represents the third straight year of the Chromebook initiative at Elwood Middle School and all students in grades six through eight are now equipped with a device. The
initiative will be expanded to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School for the 20172018 school year. To prepare for the expansion, high school teachers will be provided with a Chromebook this year to familiarize themselves with the technology and the associated programs to help enrich student learning.
TOP TROPHIES - The East Northport Fire Department captured the top trophies at the annual Greenlawn Fire Department Parade held last Thursday to kick off their Labor Day weekend fair. East Northport’s firefighters looked sharp and were awarded trophies for Best Overall Department, First Place Best Appearing Department, and TECH-SAVVY - Sixth-graders at Elwood Middle School in the Elwood School District First Place for Most Members in Line Over 30. The Northport-East Northport School District welcomed 23 new teachers into their community on August 30th at the district’s New Teacher Orientation. Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer and his entire administrative team welcomed the group to the district with a day full of activities geared at helping them learn more about the district and the community. New staff members met in the library of Northport High School, where they heard from Banzer and Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Dana Boshnack. New
teachers got to know each other by standing up and stating their name, subject area and where they received their education. Teachers then took a bus tour of the district, during which they were treated by United Teachers of Northport to ice cream from the Northport Sweet Shop. “The Sweet Shop has been operating since 1929 and epitomizes the small town feel of our community,” said Northport’s Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Irene McLaughlin. “It was a wonderful day shared by
wonderful people.” Throughout the day, new teachers received information on several topics including technology, special education and business and human resources. “The new staff members are an eager and talented group of educators who are tremendously excited to contribute to the fine work of our dedicated faculty and staff,” said McLaughlin. “We look forward to nurturing their abilities and talents and celebrating their work with our children.”
Educational Opportunities Long Island Educational Opportunity Center (LIEOC) is part of the statewide network of ten Educational Opportunity Centers (EOCs) and two Outreach and Counseling Centers, essentially functioning as the 65th campus of the State University of New York. The LIEOC is the only tuition-
free adult education program sponsored by the State University of New York (SUNY). The LIEOC has been assisting economically and educationally challenged individuals in accessing vocational and educational programs for over 40 years. The LIEOC collaborates with higher education,

You’d think with the arrival of those yellow school buses that the party would be over, however, it isn’t, not just yet. Summer lingers through September, and this lingering is more busy than idle, especially at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium. Two fun-filled specials are instore for Hatchery visitors. One is the seasonal return of the ever popular Pollywog Adventures, a series of classes for youngsters 2 to 5 years of age, and the other is the Hatchery’s annual Fall Festival, an event for kids of all ages. Pollywog Adventures returns Wednesday, September 28th and meets each Wednesday
and Thursday morning for an hour starting at 10 a.m. through the fall and winter months. Tots and their caretakers can experience an hour of funfilled nature activities, with fish feeding and live animal presentations included along with story time and related crafts. It’s a friendly environment with refreshments for participants. The price is friendly too, as Pollywog Adventures is free with general admission. The Hatchery’s annual Fall Festival is a day set aside to celebrate the natural environment. On Saturday, September 24th, (rain date, October 1st), visitors can spend the day, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., having fun while learning
about fresh water ecology and pond animals, such as the trout raised at the Hatchery. The Hatchery’s two aquarium buildings are open to tour, and there’s fishing for trout by kids 12 years of age and under with all gear provided. In addition to the booths set up by participating e n v i r o n m e n t a l organizations, there will be games, crafts and plenty of food and refreshments for all kids of all ages.
