At the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature on Wednesday, September 6th, Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco and his fellow Legislators presented a proclamation honoring retired 6th Precinct Inspector William Murphy. Murphy retired from the Suffolk County Police Department on July 7th after 42 years of service. He also served in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th precincts as well as many of divisions within the police department. Calarco thanked Murphy for his many years of service to the community and commended his relationship with community members and his responsiveness to their requests.

There’s something about this time of year, even being 17-plus years removed from school, that still resonates with a certain degree of excitement. First days, new supplies in hand, a fashionable outfit all picked out the night before… just seeing snapshots of my friends’ children brings back a ﬂood of memories from when I was a child, excitedly comparing schedules with my own classmates, mapping out what routes to take to class, planning who to eat lunch with the important things. How much has changed in the decades since. I know plenty of us would be thrilled to return to those simpler times, to when our biggest concern was having pool first period, or how to manage to squeeze in a stop at our lockers in between each class so as not to have to lug piles of books around the entire day. Even the workload seems trivial by comparison. We were competing for grades; but really, the entire structure was but a microcosm of the stresses of

daily “adult” life. It’s funny how we think we have it all figured out when we’re younger; no one can possibly offer us any insight that doesn’t match our own. We skate from one year to the next, until we eventually have to decide what to do with the rest of our lives. And even then, we have that cushion of college, the ultimate in years spent “finding” yourself. And really, all these years later, has any of us truly found what we thought we were looking for back then? I recall one teacher in high school who constantly warned us that, as many “friends” as we had collected through those formative years, there would come a day when less than a handful would remain. “Two, maybe three, tops,” he would say. “Just you wait and see.” Impossible, we all scoffed, as we remained confident that all those whom we spent the majority of classes and extracurricular activities with would always be by our side.

The Northport-East Northport School District welcomed 20 new teachers for the 2017-2018 school year during the district’s annual new teacher orientation held from August 29th-30th. Teachers and administrators met in the high school library, shared breakfast and spent time getting to know their fellow staff members. Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer provided a warm welcome. “We are thrilled to have so many new, forward-

thinking teachers joining our staff this year,” said Banzer. Afterward, teachers boarded a bus for a tour of the schools within the district. Upon return, administrators reviewed those topics and practices necessary for teachers to get acclimated to the district. Technology policies, curriculum overviews, and opportunities for professional growth and mentoring were a few of the topics addressed. The following day,

teachers returned for a second day of orientation. Administrators previewed what to expect during the first few days of school, and new teachers were provided with the opportunity to engage in a question-and-answer session with a student panel. The orientation concluded with teachers familiarizing themselves with the buildings and meeting their assigned mentors.

It wasn’t immediate. In fact, there were many friendships I maintained throughout college and even beyond. But, with each passing year, the list grew smaller. This is not to say that we would be incapable of picking up where we left off on any given day; but it’s not the same. Gone are the days of constantly talking on the phone, making plans to catch up, replaced instead by an occasional text message, a vague reference to “grabbing dinner” one of these days - and there it generally remains. If anything, this realization only confirms that I should have fully appreciated those school days as they were unfolding. How young and innocent we were, how little we knew of what was to come in the years that have since elapsed… how precious that time truly was. Here’s to all those students living those years as we speak. May they always appreciate them the way I have now learned to in hindsight.

On the day of September 11th, it began like all the others, By mid-afternoon, tragedy struck, and all men became brothers. When the planes hit and lives were lost, it was a shot through the heart, But patriotism took control and everyone did their part. It seemed like a horrible movie, all the fire, dust and smoke, It was reality just the same, when America began to hope. Innocent passengers and heroic firefighters lost their lives, Women lost their husbands and grown men lost their wives. When it occurred, no one chose to believe it was true, But every American began to bleed Red, White and Blue. America grew stronger from this tragic day, to aid the ones who suffer, America is a country we live for, we die for, because we love her.

The pride for our country came out that month, to deal with the unbelievable, And the fact that everyone banded together seemed so inconceivable. Girls became women and boys became men, to take on this emotional fight, The gift of freedom cannot be stopped; it’s our most amiable right. On the day of September 11th, the statement of glory and hope was cited, After this tragedy, the States of America truly became United.

in the 2017-2018 school year at Bellerose, most were in attendance. School Counselor Alan Tener, along with PTA representatives, hosted building tours to acquaint all new students to Bellerose. “It’s a nice way to get them acclimated to school before it actually starts,” Beekman commented, “so their first real day won’t seem so daunting.”

Teaming Up On August 31st, a team of Realtors® volunteered their time and effort to join Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, in building a home for the Mendoza family in North Bellport. First Day Back On Tuesday, September 5th, the Elwood Union Free School District started the 2017-2018 school year. Students were all smiles getting off the buses, greeting new teachers and both old and new friends. At James H. Boyd Intermediate School, students unpacked their school supplies into their desks and got acclimated with their classmates through “getting to know you” questionnaires. Teachers introduced

themselves and set the tone for the year. Principal Denise Toscano spent the morning visiting classrooms and welcoming students back to school. Kindergartners at Harley Avenue rode the bus for the first time, disembarking to waving, excited parents, and lined up, ready for their first year. Harley Avenue Principal Elissa Millan greeted students at the front of the building, and welcomed them to school for the first time.

“Kindergarten is a big step for children,” Millan said, “and every year seeing the new students is just as exciting as the year before.” Middle and high school students also had an exciting day, filled with exercises geared at familiarizing themselves with one another, as well as their academic courses. The Elwood Union Free School District wishes all students and staff a successful year ahead.

Kicking Off the Year The Harborfields Central School District held its Superintendent’s Conference Day on September 1st at Oldfield Middle School, where Superintendent Dr. Francesco Ianni opened the morning with a warm welcome to all staff, declaring that this day was about them - about getting back in touch with themselves and their colleagues. “It’s important to come back to school with the right mindset,” said Dr. Ianni, “and to be prepared to work hard, and to be proud of that work.” The district’s vision for the year focused on success

for the Harborfields family as a whole - to provide a world class education, one student at a time. Dr. Ianni encouraged staff to strive for excellence with the tools they’ve been given to succeed. “We believe in you,” Dr. Ianni told the staff. “Harborfields is a great place because of your energy, creativity and love for teaching.” After Dr. Ianni’s opening address, Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources Dr. Rory Manning encouraged staff members for the upcoming year by sharing the impact educators can have on

children’s lives - that when an adult chooses to believe in a child, that child is given the fuel and the momentum to succeed. “In some cases,” Mr. Manning said, “you’re the only ones encouraging them, and they need that more than you know.” A d d i t i o n a l l y, administrators went over what was new for the 20172018 school year, including new teaching and technological initiatives. Staff then met by department and concluded the day by setting up their classrooms and preparing for the first day of school.

Striving to Thrive The NorthportEast Northport School District held its annual Superintendent’s Conference Day on September 1st at Northport High School, where Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer kicked off the morning with a warm welcome to all staff. “We’re excited to see what this year holds,” Banzer remarked, “and to see what new avenues we can take to reach our students.” Keynote speaker Meeno Rami, author of Thrive:

Character Counts On September 7th, Harborfields Central School District students at Washington Drive Primary School attended their first “Character Counts” assembly of the year. These assemblies, held by grade level, have grown in frequency during the past few years, and positive results have shown through in students’ behaviors. This month’s iteration focused on encouraging students to be themselves. Assistant Principal Tara Falasco led the assembly and started it off with reading a book by Linda Kranz entitled “You Be You” to students. Many

knew the book, and repeated lines along with her. “We all have something special that only we can share,” Falasco said to students, “so when someone is different than you, should you ever judge them?” Students responded with a resounding “no.” She then spotlighted the building rules, reminding the children that these procedures were not new to them, and that they were to be good examples for their peers. “Why do we have rules in place here at the school?” Falasco asked the second-

grade assembly, and called on a student. “To keep everyone safe,” the second-grader sagely answered. Falasco then covered the schoolwide incentives to promote good behavior. The “cafetorium contest” rewards students who follow the rules, and the star stickers they receive go towards a prize for the best-behaved table. Calling All Artists AARP Long Island has teamed with the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) and Bloomingdale’s Furniture Gallery in Roosevelt Field Mall to host the first-ever Art@50+ art exhibit. Entries are now open for aspiring Long Island artists 50 and older to submit their works for consideration. The exhibit, which will open at Bloomingdale’s on November 15, will showcase talented artists—from beginners

to experts—based on Long Island and 50 years of age or older. In celebration of National Family Caregivers Month in November, and in recognition of the contribution family caregivers make to their loved ones and their communities, the exhibit will feature a theme of caregiving. “Like art, caring for a loved one is a deeply personal experience,” said Bernard Macias, AARP Associate State Director

for Long Island. “We hope this exhibit serves as an opportunity for 50-plus Long Islanders to express those emotions on paper or canvas. We’re excited to see the results.” “Our partnership with Bloomingdale’s allows us to offer free gallery space to Long Island artists through exiting exhibits such as Art@50+. When AARP Long Island suggested this celebration of caregiving, we knew this exhibit would touch

a chord in all our hearts,” said LIAA Executive Director, Theresa StatzSmith. Each artist is permitted to submit up to 10 pieces of two-dimensional artwork - such as photographs, paintings and drawings - along with an artist biography and photo. The artwork can range from contemporary to abstract and black-and-white to color. All work must be framed and ready to hang securely on a wall and

though there are few size restrictions, no work can be larger than 10’ x 10’. The deadline for submissions is September 30th, 2017. The $25 application fee will be waived for AARP members. A panel of professional artists will review the applications and select the winners, who will then display the selected works in gallery. One winner will be featured as November’s “Artist of the Month” at artsaliveli.org. Winners, their families and their

guests will be invited to a free artists reception on November 15 at 6 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the exhibit, which will take place at Bloomingdale’s Furniture Gallery in the Roosevelt Field Mall at 630 Old Country Road in Garden City.
