The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death. After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014.

Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood.

In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001.

According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) has named Gianna Tantillo of Melville to serve as the 17th Legislative District representative on the Suffolk County Youth Anti-Bullying Task Force. Legislator Donnelly selected Ms. Tantillo, a student at Half Hollow Hills High School East after getting to know her as a participant in the Suffolk County Distinguished Youth Award Program and for her work with Kids Need More, a nonprofit organization “dedicated to enhancing the lives of children, families and young adults coping with cancer and lifethreatening illnesses.” Ms. Tantillo along with two of her friends raised over $6000 for the organization through
their “Fit for a Cause” exercise fundraisers. The Suffolk County Youth Anti-Bullying Task Force was established under Resolution No. 419-2019, The Task Force comprises 18 County residents between 16 and 18 years of age appointed by each Legislator to represent their Legislative District. The group meets regularly throughout the year to examine the issues of bullying and recommend programs and methods to combat bullying both in school and through social media or technology. “Bullying, whether it be in person or over the internet, has become rampant,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Gianna is true student leader and role model who will bring new innovative ideas to our Anti-Bullying Task Force.”

Buddies Team Up At Elwood Freshmen entering Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in September will be offered a helping hand throughout the school year as part of the district’s Freshmen Buddies Program. Incoming freshmen will be paired up with select upperclassmen, who will serve as mentors and help guide the new students
through the upcoming school year. As part of a one-day training event on Aug. 21, the seniors learned valuable leadership and active listening skills. They will serve as positive role models for the incoming freshmen, according to School Counselor Christiana Dobra. In addition, the upper
classmen were fortunate enough to work with Diane Urso, the Long Island regional coordinator for the New York State Mentoring Program. Through several engaging activities, she advised the students on the importance of building positive bonds, developing self-esteem and making positive life choices.

The class of 2023 had their first of many experiences at ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School. School administrators, upperclassmen and teachers welcomed the incoming students at their Freshmen Orientation where they shared advice and words of encouragement. Assistant Principal Corey McNamara condensed the school’s mission statement into three R’s: respect, responsibility and
relationships. In addition, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert advised that the freshmen make the most of their high school careers. “When you arrive in this building, you have every opportunity,” he said. ““Decide what you want to do and do it well.” Senior Class President Matthew McNierney added to that sentiment, reminiscing on his freshman, sophomore and junior years.
“Put yourself out there,” he said. “It feels like I was a freshman yesterday.” Following a presentation, led by Principal Carisa Burzynski and Mr. McNamara, students met with their senior mentors, which were assigned to them in June, to receive their student identification cards, schedules and Chromebooks. Assistant Principal Leroy Cole was also present to welcome new students.
Freshmen Welcomed At Northport
Northport High School’s auditorium was bustling with the chatter for the first time since the start of summer vacation as incoming freshmen attended their two-hour orientation on Aug. 28. To kick the morning off, students watched a short video, titled “A Day in the Life of a Normal High School Student,” which showed clips of energetic pep rallies, football games, theater productions, concerts and robotics competitions. Administrators, students and teachers alike repeatedly encouraged
the ninth graders to get involved in those after school clubs and activities. “There’s something for everyone at this school,” Principal Daniel Danbusky said. “Don’t wait. Jump in with both feet wet.” Prior to meeting in the auditorium, students were encouraged to write questions, such as where certain facilities were located and how to make an appointment in the counseling center, which were answered by a panel composed of two students, two counselors, a teacher and Mr. Danbusky. After the last question
was heard and answered, freshmen made their way into the school’s common area, located near the main entrance, where they received their schedules for the upcoming school year. Seniors also conducted walking tours to help familiarize the incoming students with the school. The orientation concluded with a complementary barbecue. Even the occasional pockets of rain didn’t stop hundreds of freshmen from grabbing a burger or hot dog.

34th Annual Bluefish Tournament Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration is open for the 34rd Annual Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 15th and held at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach, in Oyster Bay. “This all-day sporting event is open to anglers of all ages but space is limited, so sign up quickly,” Supervisor Saladino said. Hundreds of area school children are heading back to class in style thanks to the generosity of PSEG Long Island employees. Throughout the summer, employees in all PSEG Long Island offices donated school supplies for an annual employee-initiated school supply drive. Thousands of boxes of crayons, pencils and pens, notebooks and binders, rulers, scissors, and other essentials were collected by the company’s Employee Outreach Council (EOC). Then, in assembly line fashion, the various backto-school items were packed into nearly 400 PSEG Long Island logoed backpacks and distributed by employee volunteers to a variety of grassroots agencies and organizations across Long Island and the Rockaways for area school children to enjoy.
The PSEG Long Island Employee Outreach Council’s mission is to coordinate support for the specific needs of the communities it serves in order to build and strengthen connections between PSEG Long Island, its employees and its neighbors. Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees also helped several local organizations distribute donated school supplies to children at various events throughout Long Island and the Rockaways hosted by Family Service League, LIADV (Long Island Against Domestic Violence), New Hour, Salvation Army and the United Way. “So many of our employees raise their hand for these back-toschool events and it’s so heartwarming,” said Suzanne Brienza, PSEG

The Elwood Union Free School District officially kicked off the start of the 2019-20 academic year by welcoming all staff members back for Superintendent’s Conference Day on Sept. 3. After reconnecting with one another during breakfast sponsored by the schools’ PTA units, Superintendent of School Dr. Kenneth Bossert welcomed all in attendance and reflected upon the district. “I am proud that while the race for excellence has no finish line, we are ahead of the pack,” he said. Dr. Bossert credited the district’s success to a supportive community, a culture of support and high expectations, and the ability for those within the district to reflect and identify areas in need of improvement. Additionally, he noted that the district’s
success is a testament to its dedicated and talented staff. “Our staff members are all-stars performing at the highest level,” he added. Other members of the Elwood community shared welcoming remarks, including Board of Education President Becky Marcus. In her address to the staff, Ms. Marcus reflected on a teacher’s ability to instill a love of learning in students. “Instilling a love of learning elevates your profession to a calling. I encourage you to welcome our students back this year with enthusiasm and into an environment where they love to learn,” she said. A committee of staff members, led by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Maureen Hull, delivered the day’s
keynote presentation, titled “All Are Welcome,” which centered on a call to action of promoting, supporting and enhancing student success through building relationships with students. The committee shared valuable insight and tools for creating greater student equity within the classroom, emphasizing social and emotional wellness, focusing on literacy and “Knightly” reading, and establishing culturally responsive classrooms. The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org
The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered
it to the recipient right in his hometown! The recipient was filled with joy and loves his new scooter.
