Back To Reality By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Back to school. Back to schedules. Back to routines. Back from vacation. Back to reality. And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn. That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops. Say it ain’t so. Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a

park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year. From long walks on the beach and picnics in the park to weekends at the wineries and pumpkin patches; from family days at Oktoberfest celebrations and Fall Festivals to “me” time alone on the couch vegging out to the new fall TV season, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.

Oh, and we can’t forget football. Sundays monopolized by the schedule of the home teams (or the Patriots, as the case may be), spent tailgating and snacking, rooting and yelling… Sunday Funday at its best. Having a schedule dictated by the hours of daylight has its downfalls; but it does make you want to savor those final glimpses of summer sunshine all the more. Take a walk, watch a sunset, sip a cup of tea on the patio. Maybe just grab a jacket on the way out.

District Opens Doors In commencement of the 2014-2015 school year, Harborfields Central School District opened its doors the week prior to the first academic school day, welcoming parents and students into the district’s school buildings. Kicking off the week, members of the Harborfields faculty, administration and PTSA gathered to greet

incoming high school students at the district’s annual ninth grade orientation on August 25. Attendees were introduced to Harborfields High School Principal Dr. Rory Manning who addressed parents and students about new challenges and expectations freshmen students can anticipate during their next four years of high school.

Freshmen were encouraged to attend the Harborfields High School Buddy Program that took place the next day. More than 100 upperclassmen volunteered their time to show their new peers around the building, offer advice and answer questions. “The Buddy Program gives our incoming ninth-grade students

an opportunity to meet with older high school students,” Dr. Manning said. “The upperclassmen walk through their ninth grade buddy’s schedule and provide valuable

information from a student perspective.” In addition to the high school orientation, students of Washington Drive Primary School, Thomas J. Lahey

Elementary School and Oldfield Middle School were invited to visit and walk the halls of their school building prior to the first day of school.

A Life Well-Lived The life well lived is one filled with experience. This experience cannot be wasted. In order to live a fully virtuous life, we must all give back to our community. Regardless of how fortunate or unfortunate we may be, a key trait of righteousness is a commitment to serve God’s creation. This idea, commonly known as stewardship, is the basis for a well lived life. I’m not a very religious person. I’ve gone to Catholic School my entire life, but I’ve also had Jewish and Episcopal influences throughout my childhood. Even if we don’t look at

stewardship from a religious perspective, most of us are hardwired to help out people in need. As a very fortunate person, I find it important to look out for those who are incapable of looking out for themselves. This does not mean acting like a superhero who swoops in to save the day. We can all make a difference on a much different scale. The main idea behind this article is not to convert people, but to serve as the kind of illustration that someone looking to live a full life must try to exemplify. It isn’t

always about ourselves. Sometimes, we have to put our wants and needs aside for the good of others. God wants us to help people. This call to serve my community, fellow humans and Mother Nature exemplify my idea of a life with a purpose. It is not always about our personal gains, but the good of our species. A life well lived should be studded with outreach and works of mercy. Putting one’s personal convictions aside is crucial to leading a life well lived through service.

August 26th marked the beginnings of a fouryear educational journey for soon-to-be freshmen at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School. Gathering a week prior to the official start of the academic year, incoming freshmen were welcomed by new interim Principal Dr. James Ruck along with faculty and student government members.

Addressing the freshmen class, Dr. Ruck began the orientation by introduced himself and his professional background in the field of education. He also addressed basic regulations enforced in the high school and the importance of respect and responsibility, as well as the transition students can anticipate throughout their high school education.

“This is a time for change,” he said. “It’s a time to grow, learn, explore and most importantly, for self-discovery.” The orientation concluded with members of the student government escorting freshmen around the building and answering questions for their new peers.

This August, students in the inaugural class of Long Island’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School (LI P-TECH) embarked on a diverse educational journey. On August 6th, 7th and 8th, P-TECH students got a fully immersive crash course in the revolutionary technology of additive manufacturing, more commonly known as 3D printing. For three days, these students came together for an interactive 3D printing project at the Institute for Research and Technology Transfer at Farmingdale State College, SUNY.

During the threeday workshop, students collaborated to design and assemble a Printrbot 3D printer kit. Each student then used the kit to create his or her own 3D creation. This colorful, cutting edge lesson gave students personal experience with one of the most innovative technologies the world has to offer. Students also had the opportunity to tour the Long Island Forum for Technology’s (LIFT) Composite Prototyping Center, a living laboratory dedicated to state-of-theart technology and the STEM disciplines. The leading edge-lesson

was bookended by backto-basics environmental activities at two Nassau BOCES sites. At the start of the academy, students came together at the Brookville Outdoor and Environmental Education Center for a series of teambuilding exercises designed to encourage trust, collaboration, risk-taking, cooperation and problem solving. These skills were reinforced during a daylong wilderness adventure at Caumsett State Park that ended the academy with orienteering, canoeing and a survival exercise.

Reward School Named The New York State Education Department has named Elwood-John H. Glenn High School to its list of Reward Schools for the 2014-2015 school year, the third straight year the high school has received this honor. The high school is one out of only 354 schools throughout the state to be honored with this distinction.

According to the State Education Department, Reward Schools are either schools that have made the most progress or schools that have the highest achievement in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement that are not being closed. “I am extremely proud that Elwood-John H.

Tech Initiative In preparation for the 2014-2015 school year, Elwood Middle School hosted their annual sixthgrade orientation on August 26th. Parents and students gathered in the auditorium, where they listened to an informative presentation and were introduced to faculty members. Preceding the orientation, parents and students were directed to the library where Google Chromebooks were distributed for sixth-

graders to take home. As part of a new technology initiative for the Elwood Union Free School District, students entering sixth-grade received their own Google Chromebook. During the presentation, a student-made video was shown, highlighting basic features and other applications accessible on the Chromebook. Students can access the video online and were encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new device, following the detailed instructions

the video provided. Elwood Middle School Principal Dr. Hugh Gigante expressed his excitement about the integration of modern technology with student learning. “The sixth-grade students have a unique opportunity to use Chromebooks,” he said. “With this technology, they are exposed to an enhanced instructional experience which will better equip them for their continued educational journey.”
