Did you know? Many people plan to retire by a certain age, but few may actually still be working at their targeted retirement age. In the United States, the age at which working Americans expect to retire has risen to 66. But a Gallup poll showed that most don’t stay on the job that long, instead retiring

having enough money to live comfortably during retirement. Still, early retirement largely involves unexpected scenarios. These may include poor health, having to care for an aging parent, downsizing, new skills required for the job, or other work-related reasons.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip!

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.

Trotta Thanks Student, Lia Edlin Miller, For Making Masks And Donating Profits In 2014, shortly after being sworn in as the County Legislator for the 13 Legislative District, Legislator Trotta met Lia Edlin Miller, of East Northport, then a second grade student who had won First Place in the Second Grade Division of the annual Brookhaven National Lab’s annual elementary school science fair. Her project, “Do the Eyes Tell All?” focused on whether a person could discern people’s emotions by looking at their eyes. Through her research, she determined that it was easier to identify happy and angry people, rather than
individuals who were sad, tired, thinking or scared. Now in 2020 with the coronavirus pandemic and the mandate that people are required to wear face coverings, we can only see the eyes of each other. Lia is using her sewing skills to make masks, made out of cotton, doubled sided, reversible and washable. She started on April 1 and has made over 3,200 masks for the community. She does this on a donation basis and uses the profits to cover her cost of materials and the remainder she donates to various charities including the Huntington Tri-CYO,
Northport High School Food Pantry, Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary, Northport Cat Reserve, Second Loves Rescue and St. Anthony’s School Supply Drive. To date, she has donated over $4,000 to these organizations. “I am very impressed with Lia that she took the initiative to use her skills to make a product needed by the community, and to donate the proceeds to several charities that are in need of support during this pandemic,” said Legislator Trotta. “These masks are great as my glasses don’t fog up,” Trotta added.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) joined New York State Senator Jim Gaughran in welcoming Shrimpy’s Burrito Bar to Huntington on Wednesday, September 2. Located at 135 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, right across the street from Legislator Donnelly’s district office, the Huntington spot is the second location for the beach-themed California vibe restaurant with “a little twist of New York flavor!” Owners Ryan DiPaola, John Nast Jr. and Thomas J. Soluri Jr. opened the first Shrimpy’s Burrito Bar in Massapequa Park in 2018, and, when it quickly became a local favorite, they sought to expand to Suffolk County. The new location features the same great fresh food, drinks and overall dining experience that made the original Shrimpy’s a popular casual dining spot. “I am thrilled to welcome Shrimpy’s to the neighborhood,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I wish them the same great success in Huntington Station that they have enjoyed in their original Massapequa Park location.”
