AHRC Suffolk, a notfor-profit organization supporting people with disabilities in Suffolk County, has been awarded $125,500 in grants from the Trustee Management Board of NYSARC Trust Services to support AHRC Suffolk’s guardianship and recreation programs. NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts (SNT) that can make dramatic improvements to the lives of people with disabilities while enabling individuals to maintain eligibility for public benefits programs, such as Medicaid and SSI. For 2017, NYSARC Trust Services is proud to fulfill its commitment to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by awarding a total of $2,793,500 in grants to NYSARC Chapters statewide. This year, AHRC Suffolk received $110,500 to provide guardianship services for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities who would not otherwise have a legal guardian or advocate. Supported by Chapter staff and community volunteers, AHRC Suffolk’s Guardianship Program currently provides guardianship supports and services to 19 people and is ready to assist 25 more as a Standby or Alternate Standby guardian. NYSARC Trust Services also awarded AHRC Suffolk $15,000 to develop new recreational opportunities to enrich the lives of the more than 2,500 members it serves. AHRC Suffolk plans to use the recreation grant funds for their Saturday Recreation Program. This grant enables the individuals to enjoy community outings like apple and pumpkin picking, zumba and yoga classes and to purchase supplies and equipment for indoor activities such as bowling, movies and arts and crafts projects. Budding Entrepreneurs by creating a name, logo and business plan. This included determining their target audience, resources and product price. Students designed their products during the week and learned how to promote their creations, track their finances and manage a team. Five Northport High School students also took part in the program by helping the students with their businesses. “It was wonderful to see young people start to think in an entrepreneurial way and gain a general understanding that the business world touches everyone, no matter

what career path you’re interested in pursuing,” said Cogan. “It was also wonderful to see my high school students teach and mentor the younger students. They were able to take what they’ve learned and do something amazing with that knowledge.” At the conclusion of the week, family and friends were invited to a tradeshow where students showcased their ideas. For the first time in the Northport-East Northport School District, 25 students in grades 1-8 recently participated in the Northport Youth Business Academy, a weeklong summer program at Northport High School that focused on exploring business ideas and learning how businesses contribute to the community. A Fresh Start

In late August, ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School welcomed the Class of 2021 with a special freshman orientation. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ken Bossert offered the first welcome address, assuring students they would feel at home in no time. He also took a moment to welcome those who are brand new to the district, backed by the applause of all in attendance. “Last year was my first in Elwood,” Dr. Bossert said. “I speak from experience when I say that I know you’ll receive an overwhelming amount of kindness from those within the school

and community.” Dr. Bossert then introduced Principal Carisa Burzynski who encouraged students to view freshman year as a fresh start. She then asked an upperclassman to read the district’s mission statement aloud – a vision of providing excellent education and empowering and inspiring each and every student to succeed. To illustrate this “growth mindset,” Ms. Burzynski showed a video of a mother duck waiting patiently as her baby ducklings persevered to climb upstairs. “We all get to where we need to on our own time,”

she said. “We need to root for each other!” Freshmen were then paired with upperclassmen, who gave the ninth-graders a tour of the school. “I’m really glad I was elected to help with the orientation,” student Matt McDermot remarked. “It’s fun to help the new students find their way around a place I know so well.” To conclude the orientation, freshmen received their school Chromebooks, an expansion of the initiative that first started at Elwood Middle School when the Class of 2021 entered sixth grade.

Before the start of the new school year, 16 incoming K-5 students in the Harborfields Central School District took part in the Stuffed Creature Workshop, the final camp session of HACEF’s (Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation) Summer Camp Program from August 21st-24th. Led by Keri Puglisi from EmmaLoops Craft Studio, students gathered at Harborfields High School to explore hand sewing techniques and create their own stuffed animals, pillows and creatures. The

four-day camp consisted of learning how to cut, pin and hand sew their custom designs while adding different embellishments like buttons and beads. With the help of two incoming seventh-graders and two 11th-graders, each student had the opportunity to create as many stuffed objects as they wanted, while making friendships along the way. “I like sewing little animals and things,” said incoming fourth-grader Lia Calderone. “I haven’t sewed in a while so I’m now remembering how to do it again.”

Sewing Workshop This was the first year that HACEF invited Puglisi into the summer program as a way to enhance the program with two new creative sessions for students to enjoy. It was a day of preparation for Elwood Union Free School District’s 15 newest teachers as they gathered in the Elwood Middle School library on August 28th for the first day of their New Teacher Orientation. The two-day orientation program allowed the new staff members to be officially introduced to the district through key tools and information. Director of Humanities Pam Fine and Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen KellyGorman hosted the first day of orientation, where the focus was on curriculum and instruction. New staff

members were welcomed with a special breakfast to kick off the day and met with the administrative team. To get better acquainted with each other, the group took part in icebreaker challenges including a round of “Two Truths and a Lie.” In addition, Executive Director of Special Education Dianne Wilkinson presented on special education and the group learned about student engagement and the expectations for instruction. At the end of the day, the new teachers took a bus tour of Elwood to familiarize themselves

During the second day of orientation, the new teachers honed their technology skills under the guidance of Executive Director for Technology and Transportation Gene Tranchino and Instructional Technology Specialist Krista Albrecht. Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

As was true here with Sandy, it is amazing how people, organizations and companies have helped by volunteering their time, energy, resources and money. The outpouring of compassion has been, and continues to be, amazing. It reminds us all that, even during this

Before the start of the new school year, students and families in the Elwood Union Free School District were invited to a special meet and greet with Elwood Middle School’s newest Principal, Dr. Christina Sapienza, on August 24th. The district appointed Dr. Sapienza over the summer where she began her new position. The community arrived to the Elwood Middle School cafeteria where they were each greeted by Dr. Sapienza, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Maureen Hull. Board of education

members, Vice President James Tomeo and trustee Heather Mammolito were also in attendance to welcome the new principal. Dr. Bossert kicked off the informal meet and greet by expressing his excitement of having Dr. Sapienza join the Elwood school community. “We knew we needed to find a real all-star for the students of Elwood Middle School,” he said. “Dr. Sapienza was a candidate who didn’t just want a job, she wanted a position in a district where she felt she could really be successful and make a difference. I am confident that she is the right person to do that here.”

Scholarship Awarded

Before speaking oneon-one with students and families, Dr. Sapienza spoke to all in attendance about herself and her goals as an administrator. “Adolescence is a beautiful, challenging, messy time in our children’s lives,” she said. “I’m very passionate about creating programs and STEAM programs that not only offer them the opportunity for academic excellence but really develop mental responsiveness.” Throughout the event, refreshments were served and students and families The Firemen’s were able to introduce themselves and ask Association of the State questions to Dr. Sapienza. of New York (FASNY) has awarded the 2017 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Vincent Pastore of Huntington Station. Benjamin received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for his volunteer service in the community from FASNY member

federal government. Pastore became a member of the Huntington Manor Fire Department when he began high school. He also has various family members who are members of the fire department as well. He states, “I have been around the fire department my entire life. Commitment to community is a priority for me; it is part of who I am.” Pastore is one of 20 students chosen for this scholarship out of a surplus of applicants. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.

Stuff-a-Bus Sort-a-thon The Long Island Nets and the United Way of Long Island recently held a Sort-a-Thon event at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in partnership with Target as part of the 2017 Annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign. Volunteers sorted thousands of school supplies to be donated to the Uniondale School District to benefit students in need for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. The school supplies included backpacks, binders, colored pencils, notebooks, glue sticks and other useful tools that have been collected from more

than 25 drop-off locations throughout Long Island. Petrone said. “We hope that residents who attend one of these sessions will leave feeling relieved that they have options to keep their homes.” “The best way to deal with blight is to keep it from happening,” Councilwoman Berland said. “That was the aim of the state program that provided the grant, and it is the aim of the Town as it offers new services to our homeowners. I think all residents will find these programs informative and helpful.” The $350,000 grant was part of New York State Attorney General

Eric Schneiderman’s Zombie Remediation and Prevention Initiative, which is using funds from the state’s share of a $550 million nationwide court settlement with Morgan Stanley over residentialmortgage-based securities. The grant program is administered by the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, a national community development intermediary that specializes in affordable housing, economic development and community revitalization. Huntington is undertaking a number of projects with the funding, including purchasing software that will help identify “at risk” properties and hiring a community outreach consultant who is coordinating outreach efforts and serving as a foreclosure prevention specialist, meeting with homeowners at the Opportunity Resource Center. The grant also provides funding for additional hours for a part-time assistant Town attorney who works on blight matters.

In anticipation of school starting next week, Harborfields High School held its annual Buddy Program on August 29th. This program helped introduce incoming freshman to the high school with an upperclassman as their guide. Assistant Principal Christopher Patronaggio welcomed the Class of 2021 to high school and encouraged them to use the day to ask as many questions as possible of

their buddy. At the same time, Principal Tim Russo encouraged upperclassmen to make sure no freshman was without a buddy, and to answer any and all questions they had. “I want the upperclassmen to remember what it was like when they started high school and to treat their buddies accordingly,” Russo said. The two groups were brought together in the

Building Skills For the first time in the Northport-East Northport School District, a week-long districtwide Summer Choral Clinic was established from August 14th-18th for students in grades 5-12. More than 200 students participated in the program which included a half day and full day choir camp for fifth and sixthgraders. In the past, the district hosted a traditional fourweek summer music program for elementary and middle school students. They decided to restructure the program this year by cutting it down to one week, meeting the needs and schedules of more students. As a result, the program saw an increase in student participation. Led by Northport High School tour choir directors Ellen McCarthy and Nicholas Hart, Northport Middle School music teacher Erica Nottingham and guest clinician Ben Johns from Eastman Music Conservatory, the program

allowed students how to learn to play world drums and explore proper vocal techniques and history. They also learned various musical theater techniques such as how to stage a choral number and overall stage presence. “I really love the dancing,” said incoming fifth-grade Bellerose Avenue student Jessica Proffe. “I got to be a little bird in the song “So Long, Farewell” and I haven’t used my voice in this way in a while.” Members of the Northport High School Tour Choir also participated in the clinic to build their vocal skills as part of the upper level choir. They participated in various team-building exercises and icebreakers throughout the program. “This was the first year that we included fifth and sixth-graders into the choir clinic,” said Hart. “We are hoping that the program continues to grow and are always looking for different ways to add to and improve

the clinic.” At the conclusion of the week, the students showcased their talents during an evening concert in the Northport High School auditorium for family and friends. Students in grades five and six donned colorful wigs and performed “Get Back Up Again” from the film Trolls, a special choreographed performance of “So Long, Farewell” from The Sound of Music and “We Know the Way” from Moana. The upper level choir which included mostly students in grades 9-12 with a few seventh and eighthgraders, performed “Sicut Cervus” by Palestrina, “Fa Una Canzone” by Vecchi, “Wade in the Water,” “Summertime” arranged by Roderick Williams, and “Somewhere” from West Side Story. The program ended with a powerful rendition of “The Gift to be Simple” which included all the singers in the clinic.

Fire Island Lighthouse Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, September 9th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of our present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Learn how lighthouse Keepers in the 1860’s to 2017 maintained the light.

This event includes a tour of the Lens Building and the Boat House. The tour takes approximately two and a half hours. The fee is $15 for FILPS Members, and $20 for non-members. New Faces The Harborfields Central School District held an orientation for all new teachers entering their schools on August 29th. The purpose of the orientation was to acclimate the new staff to the policies and procedures of the district, as well as the community and the culture of the surrounding area. During the day, teachers got to know each other

and worked closely with administrators on some new technological initiatives that Harborfields is implementing. Each new teacher was given a mentor to ensure success during his/her first year and onward into the future. They were also encouraged take part in workshops for professional development beginning in the fall, covering topics from emotional health

and mindfulness to being technologically savvy. “We want this transition to be as smooth as possible,” commented Executive Director for Instructional Services Jordan Cox. “We want them to know what the district’s expectations are, but also to feel at home and a part of our family here at Harborfields.”
