Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration is open for the 34rd Annual Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 15th and held at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach, in Oyster Bay. “This all-day sporting event is open to anglers of all ages but space is limited, so sign up quickly,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This annual event that is beloved by residents all across the Town features hours of fun fishing followed by a tailgate party with refreshments, raffles and awards. Anyone who registers prior to September 10th will receive a tournament T-shirt and be automatically entered in a special raffle. Residents can pick up registration forms at all Town facilities.” The tournament runs from 4:30am to 4pm. Registration is limited with entry fees discounted for Town residents. Costs to enter are $35 per fisherman for residents and $45 for non-Town residents. Prizes are awarded for 1st through 15th place, with 1st place winner receiving a $2,000 gift card and plaque. Raffle prizes include Solstice inflatable boats and Mercury outboards, rods, reels, ice chests, restaurant certificates and more. Raffle winners must be present to receive their prizes. The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org
and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. There are many ways that you can get involved with this great organization. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn some of the ways how. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association is delighted to be hosting this event in our Interpretive Center on September 12th, 2019 at 11:00AM at Walt Whitman Birthplace 246 Old Walt Whitman Road Huntington Station. Free and open to the public. All are welcome. United States Postal Service® will issue the Walt Whitman stamp (Non-denominated priced at the 3-ounce rate) in one design. The stamp will go on sale nationwide September 12, 2019, and will be sold at the Birthplace launch event on this day. First day of issue postcards and other commemorative Whitman stamp memorabilia will be available for sale at the launch event. With this stamp, the 32nd issue in the Literary
Whitman soon after Lincoln‘s assassination on April 14, 1865. The artist for the stamp was Sam Weber. Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamp. The words “THREE OUNCE” on this stamp indicate its usage value. Like a Forever® stamp, this stamp will always be valid for the rate printed on it. Arts series, the Postal Service™ honors poet Walt Whitman (1819– 1892) on the bicentennial of his birth. The stamp features a portrait of Whitman based on a photograph taken by Frank Pearsall in 1869. THINKING OF BUYING OR SELLING?
The Harborfields Central School District welcomed 14 new teachers as part of the annual New Staff Orientation program at Oldfield Middle School on Aug. 27. The new hires, who will be teaching across the district’s four buildings, attended the full-day program, where they met with the district’s administrators and learned the tools to be successful in and out of the classroom. Focusing on the district’s vision to “provide a world-class education to our students, one child at a time,” the program was kicked off by the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Franceso Ianni, who emphasized the values of the community that contribute to the culture of excellence in each school. Maureen Raynor, executive director for human resources and instructional services, explained the district’s policies, including the annual performance review process, while Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Dr. Rory Manning provided a detailed overview of the district’s curriculum initiatives and instructional goals. Over 1,400 People Sign Petition The “Let’s Make Huntington Heckscher Park a Dog-Friendly Park!” petition at Change.org at: https://www.change. org/p/li-dog-let-s-makehuntington-heckscherpark-a-dog-friendly-parkallow-leashed-friendlydogs was created to allow leashed dogs at Huntington’s popular Heckscher Park, and has already generated over 1,400 signatures. Heckscher Park is a local treasure, with concerts, festivals, and other events held there each year. But outdated laws have prohibited Huntington’s dog owners from walking their leashed dogs there, making the park’s pathways virtually empty when there are no events -a waste of tax payer money. The park’s pathways are also covered each day with goose dropping from the geese that run free in the park, requiring daily cleaning. HuntingtonNow. com and Patch.com recently covered the petition, alerted to the issue through the Huntington Matters Community Forum on Facebook, where Huntingtonians had
spirited discussions about the petition to change town code to allow leashed dogs at Heckscher Park. “Huntington’s dog owners want to walk their leashed dogs in Heckscher Park legally, without fear of retribution. In October, scores of dog owners with their leashed dogs will descend upon Heckscher Park for the annual Long Island Fall Festival, unaware that dogs aren’t allowed. Can we change this outdated town code regulation by then to allow dogs to be at peace in the park? We owe it to our beloved dogs to try,” said Karen Thomas, the creator of the petition, and a lifelong resident of Huntington Township. Heckscher Park Can Also be a Dog-Friendly Park Like Northport Harbor Park There are currently no leashed dog parks in Huntington village similar to Northport, where families and dogs can listen to music, attend events, and performances. Northport Harbor Park has allowed leashed dogs for years and is a very busy park with happy dog
owners walking their dogs, socializing with other dog owners, and enjoying the events and music. The addition of leashed dogs provides a family friendly environment, increases tourism, good will, charm, and publicity. LI-Dog, the nonprofit advocate for dog parks and trails, said, “The leashed dogs policy works well in Northport, not to mention thousands of other busy community parks around the country, and there’s no reason to think Heckscher Park should be different.” Ginny Munger Kahn, President of LiDog, who signed the petition, said, “It’s time to let Huntington dog owners enjoy this wonderful public recreational resource just like every other person in town. Incoming students initially gathered in the auditorium, whereas upperclassmen, including juniors and seniors met in the gymnasium for instruction. In the auditorium, new students were greeted by Principal Timothy Russo and Susan Koenig, the school’s social worker, who encouraged
the students to get involved in the school’s array of clubs and activities. Immediately afterwards, the freshmen made their way to the gymnasium where they were divided into smaller groups based on their interests in clubs or sports. Clubs represented at the event included Global Justice, Yearbook and Art, whereas sports included lacrosse, soccer and football. The leaders of those groups then led tours of the school to help familiarize the freshmen with their schedules and the school’s layout. Connor Dillon, a senior
and member of the Pet Awareness Club, and Mia Kushner, a junior and member of the Math Club, both volunteered a day of their summer because they recalled the anxiety that they felt upon entering their freshman year. “It was great when I was a freshman,” Kushner said. “It’s exciting to be on the other side of it.” Following the tours, Mr. Russo added that it’s important for students to begin building relationships as soon as possible. “The best way to get that started is before school even starts,” he said.
