untington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone congratulated the Huntington YMCA for being chosen to receive a grant from McDonald’s New York Metro Nutrition Network to help support the YMCA’s Healthier Tomorrows initiative, a program aimed at addressing the increase in youth obesity. Healthier Tomorrows, which the YMCA runs in partnership with Huntington Hospital, is a family-focused pediatric weight management program.

Dose Of Nostalgia By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,
newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts
today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.

Natural Changes
Lately, there has been a lot of talk over the issue of environmental conservation. It is crucial to the well being of our ecosystem that we look after all of nature’s life. Maintaining the levels of all animals, big or small, is no easy task, but it must be done. In order to ensure a healthy, abundant environment for everyone, it is a necessity to undertake the protection of, quite literally, everything. As someone who lives on Fire Island, I see everyday how deer, birds and even insects are affected by litter, pollution and the overall negative human impact. I also live within a preservation on this little Barrier
Island. Hurricane Sandy effectively cleaned the area out, giving way to the rise of many species that signal a healthy ecosystem. On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to flourish. This is a good thing because the presence of frogs have always meant a thriving environment teeming with food, vegetation and most importantly, other healthy wildlife. Dolphins are becoming an ever-present fixture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. A few weeks
ago, a sea turtle was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature. Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. Schools Receive Honor The New York State Education Department has named Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, Oldfield Middle School and Harborfields High School to its distinguished list of Reward Schools for the 2013-2014 school year. This designation is based on achievement trends and student growth over the past several years and is an honor granted to only 353
schools throughout New York State this year. Recently, the SED adopted relatively new accountability guidelines for all schools throughout the state, identifying both the lowest-performing districts and those that are achieving at the highest levels or making the most progress. For those schools that fall in the latter category, the
SED categorizes them as Reward Schools. “I am extremely proud of the hard work shown by our administrators, teachers and students,” Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro said. “For three of our schools to be named as Reward Schools by the state is a testament to our school community’s dedication and continued growth.”

The Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk, also known as VIBS, recently became the recipient of thirty Suffolk County used cell phones and Blackberry devices. Since 1976, VIBS has been an institution that is dedicated to advocating for the victims of domestic violence, rape, and sexual assault.
They are committed to spreading awareness and preventing these crimes from occurring in the future through extensive education. This organization’s very important work made them an ideal candidate to receive the surplus technology from Suffolk County. Hopefully, these devices
will assist VIBS in fulfilling their mission of keeping County residents safe from harm. The technology was accepted by Executive Director of VIBS, Pamela Johnston from Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D., who sponsored the legislation that approved the donation.

More than three thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 22nd, to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. Honored For 65 Years Of Service
Centerport volunteer firefighter Ken Klerk was recently recognized for his 65 years of outstanding and dedicated service with the Centerport Fire Department. Klerk joined the department in 1948 and later climbed the officer’s ranks, starting as Lieutenant and Captain of Engine Company No. 1, Second Assistant Chief, First Assistant Chief, and then served as Chief of the Department from 19681969. Klerk spent the next 20 years, from 1970-1990, as member of the Board of Fire Commissioners. Klerk served over 25 years on the Centerport Rescue Squad, and was one of the first EMT’s in the Town of Huntington. When Klerk joined in 1948, Centerport was
the only fire department in Huntington with an ambulance at the time. The white Ford ambulance and First Aid equipment were donated by William K. Vanderbilt in 1938, and handled many calls for assistance throughout the town. Klerk noted that in the early days the department responded to many brush fires, and the law to ban open outdoor burning was passed while he was Chief which helped curb the fires. He remembers a tragic house fire in Centerport that claimed the lives of three children in the early 1960’s. That prompted him to install smoke alarms in his own home, which were just coming on to the market. A lifelong resident of
Centerport, Klerk owned a television sales and service business in Greenlawn. At 84-years of age, Klerk is still an active member of the department’s Fire Police Squad, controlling traffic and safeguarding the public and emergency responders at fires and accident scenes. Klerk received proclamations and citations from Governor Andrew Cuomo, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Fireman’s Association of the State of NY, Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of NY, and the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs. YMCA Grant Awarded
Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone congratulated the Huntington YMCA for being chosen to receive a grant from McDonald’s New York Metro Nutrition Network to help support the YMCA’s Healthier Tomorrows initiative, a program aimed at addressing the increase in youth obesity. The Supervisor joined in the event as Mike Daggett, president of the Long Island McDonald’s Cooperative, and Tony Liedtke and his daughter Jaime, owner of several Long Island McDonald’s restaurants, presented the $5,000 check to YMCA of Long Island president Ann Brigis and YMCA of Long Island chairman Scott Sammis. Healthier Tomorrows, which the YMCA runs
in partnership with Huntington Hospital, is a family-focused pediatric weight management program. Under the direction of board certified pediatricians, a multidisciplinary team of Huntington Hospital professionals, including a dietician, nurse, and a social worker, along with YMCA exercise specialists, provide youngsters with the tools to adopt healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle. The New York Metro Nutrition Network, which was launched in March 2012, is a community outreach initiative which provides funds to local organizations for grassroots nutrition programs and guidance to the communities they serve. Funding comes from the owners of the
local franchises. The YMCA is one of six non-profits in the tri-state area to receive a grant. In some brief remarks, Supervisor Petrone praised the YMCA for Healthier Tomorrow’s efforts at combatting child obesity and thanked the McDonald’s New York Metro Nutrition Network and the local franchisees for their community involvement. “The YMCA’s Healthier Tomorrows program is helping children develop the eating habits they need for long, healthy lives, and I commend the McDonald’s Tri-State Owner/Operators for recognizing this important program with their New York Metro Nutrition Network grant,” Supervisor Petrone said.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone has signed up for 511NY Rideshare’s 2013 Carpool Challenge, and he hopes that other Town employees will sign up, too. At the August Town Board meeting, Supervisor Petrone sponsored the resolution in which the Board voted to make the Town an official participant in the challenge. To take part in the challenge, employees agree to complete at least four round trips in a calendar month between September 1st and November 30th in which they get to and from work by means other than driving themselves alone. Participants can car pool, take public transportation, bicycle or even walk. Those who complete the four roundtrips will receive a $25 Target gift card
from 511NYRideshare, a program of the New York State Department of Transportation. “The Town Board supports 511NYRideshare’s effort to reduce the number of single -occupancy vehicle commutes among Town employees as a way to save money, reduce traffic and parking congestion, cut fossil fuel use, improve air quality and reduce the Town’s carbon footprint,” the resolution noted. Representatives from 511NYRideshare were at Town Hall last week explaining the details of the challenge to Town employees and encouraging them to participate. Supervisor Petrone asked the general public to consider taking part in a related program – Car Free Day Long Island, of
the gardeners and patrons. They were joined by Suffolk County Legis. Dr. William Spencer. In his brief remarks, Supervisor Petrone noted that the garden, started as an interim use while the Town assembled the parcels and considered possible design options for Gateway Park, has become so popular that it likely will be a permanent integral part of the park around which other uses could be built. Volunteers built the first of the beds in July 2010, using materials purchased through the Town’s Environmental Open Space and Park Improvement Fund. Of the 115 current beds, 24 are for children and were used this summer by children from
the Town’s Project Play Camp held at the nearby Jack Abrams School; and by children enrolled in an Eco-Literacy program, a collaboration of LICAN and the Tri-Community Youth Agency (Tri-CYA). Three beds are for donation to local food banks. Once a year, gardeners sell their produce to the community, harvesting the vegetables and acting as clerks. Proceeds from the sales benefit LICAN and the Gateway and Soergel Garden, both of which LICAN manage under license from the Town. The vast majority of the 88 adult gardeners come from Huntington Station. Any town resident can apply for a garden at LICAN.org. There is a waiting list.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM - A juggling and comedy show was recently held at the Elwood Public Library, as part of the Library’s Summer Reading Program. Each year, participating libraries run programs to encourage children to read over the summer vacation. Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Assemblyman Ramos, the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) and Bishop Donald Hudson of Common Ground Church of Central Islip to tour the Suffolk County Youth Police Academy and receive $3,000 from Assemblyman Ramos for ongoing efforts to expose youth from underserved communities to the Suffolk County Police Department. “In an effort to ensure a diverse applicant pool and representation within the Suffolk County Police Department, this week-long training for youth between the ages of fifteen through eighteen was specifically designed to reach out to and attract ethnically diverse students,” said County Executive Bellone. “Allowing students to have first-hand experience of police recruit training and
interaction with police personnel will help youth to consider a career in law enforcement. I thank Assemblyman Phil Ramos for his commitment to the youth of our communities and for providing the opportunity for students who may have not had access to funds to participate in this most invaluable law enforcement program.” The program provided an opportunity for those students who have thought about a career in law enforcement or those students who believe that they would never be considered for a position as a Police Recruit the opportunity to experience five days of an actual Police Academy where students take part in similar training as a Suffolk County Police Recruit. “I’m excited for the opportunity that more children from underserved
communities are having to experience firsthand the inner workings of the Suffolk County Police Department. Historically, people of color have been underrepresented in the police ranks and the youth police academy,” said Assemblyman Phil Ramos. By securing this funding for the Suffolk County Youth Police Academy, we’re taking the right steps to increase the probability of having more minorities in the ranks in the next exam to take place in June 2015. By bringing state funding to the Police Athletic League, we’re benefitting 43 children from underserved communities and exposing them to a potential career in law enforcement.” The next entrance exam for the Suffolk County Police Department will take place in 2015.

Local Teens Volunteer For the ninth consecutive year, Saddle Rock Ranch, a service of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) is serving as a training site for Special Olympics New York Equestrian athletes. Every year this training event is facilitated by PATHcertified instructors and several teenage volunteers. The site received double the amount of annual registrations this year. This has made the support of these local volunteers more critical than ever – and they have risen to meet the challenge. Saddle Rock Ranch has been hosting Special Olympics New York equestrian training since 2005. For the first few years the nearly 16-acre ranch has accommodated 25 – 30 riders in four weekly sessions each season. “This year our registration exploded,” explained Julie Dell’Aira, Therapeutic Riding Program Coordinator. “We had 65 registrants and added ten sessions to our typical schedule. Since training takes place in the summer when many families are vacationing, we are really struggling to get enough volunteers every night.” A typical practice
session includes four special needs riders, one certified instructor and anywhere from four to 12 support volunteers. The ranch hosts two to three lessons each week night and an additional four lessons on the weekends to accommodate all of the equestrian athletes. This heavy load has been managed by a very small army of diligent volunteers, led by one amazing 13year old, who spends a minimum of 21 hours a week helping the athletes. “On September 7th, Saddle Rock’s 62 athletes will travel to HorseAbility in Old Westbury to compete in the regional Special Olympics New York Horse Show. “This event is a huge deal for our athletes and they depend on the volunteers who have helped them train to get through the competition with as little stress as possible,” says Dell’Aira. One challenge these Olympians have to overcome is that they will not be able to bring their lesson horses to the show, so the support of our regular volunteers is even more important. “The program is very challenging to manage,” Dell’Aira commented. “But when our athletes compete and stand on the podium with their medals and
ribbons and huge smiles on their faces, it makes every moment of the stress worthwhile.” Saddle Rock Ranch is always looking for volunteers for their community therapeutic riding and Special Olympics New York programs. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck announced that it is once again offering its fall weekend respite program, transforming the 60-plusyear-old camp into a yearround destination for children and young adults with disabilities. Children and young adults up to the age of 21 arrive on Friday evening and leave on Sunday afternoon. There is a new theme each weekend. Campers can participate in various activities, including baking, arts and crafts, games, and watching movies. The weekends available are as follows: September 13th through 15th, 2013;
October 4th through 6th, 2013; November 22nd through 24th, 2013; and December 13th through 15th, 2013. The cost of each weekend (Friday to Sunday) is $350. The camp requires a $50 deposit per session which is non-refundable unless registration is canceled 30 days prior to the session. “We are excited to bring back this wonderful program,” said Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “This gives children and young adults the opportunity to be themselves, and the parents a chance to relax while their sons and daughters are being taken
care of.” Check-in for campers is at 8 p.m. on Friday and check-out is at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Because the resources are packed away until the summer, campers are required to bring their own sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and toiletries. Up to 20 campers will be admitted for each weekend. Fishing Fundraiser
Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for medically fragile children is celebrated the opening of its third Home in Stony Brook. Graciously assisting with the Fishing Fundraiser was Captain Chris from the charter boat “Fishtale” sailing out of Captree State Park in Babylon, on July 30th. They filled three boats with close to 200 people. It was a beautiful day allowing the guests of Angela’s House to catch lots of fish, have
a great time with family and friends and to support Angela’s House on a fantastic summer evening. Guests were also treated to a light dinner. The night was topped off with a beautiful sunset that makes us realize how beautiful it is to live on Long Island. A few weeks after this event, the medically frail children started to move into the new home which gives us a lot to be happy about. These few children are dependent on mechanical ventilation to
assist them with breathing. They are proud to now call Angela’s House III their home. It is events like this fishing fundraiser in the community that we can make this possible. Sportfish Challenge The 3rd Annual White Water Sportfish Challenge will be held at Star Island Yacht Club. The fourday event kicks off with the Captain’s Meeting & BBQ on September 5th at 7:30 p.m. and fishing on September 6th and 7th from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, and an awards ceremony and brunch on September 8th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. White Water Marine and Star Island Yacht Club have teamed up to bring the outboard motor
sport fisherman a unique tournament experience with two great days of world-class fishing. Prizes will be offered for an Offshore Champion, an Inshore Champion and a prize for each of the four fish categories: tuna, shark (mako and thresher), bass and blue fish. Over $30,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs, including a Captain’s Raffle. The entry fee is $975 per boat, which includes four angler bracelets and admittance to the Captain’s
Meeting and brunch. Additional bracelets may be purchased for $80 each. Transient rates are $2.50 per foot plus $15 per day for utilities (water, electric and cable TV), payable in advance.
