The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.
To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle.
Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks. com, when you enter the charity code FGWIBCC20. The coronavirus pandemic resulted in the first-ever virtual version of the annual Elementary School Science Fair by the US Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. In the past, the winners displayed their science projects in the lobby of the Suffolk County Legislature’s building for the Legislators and public to see during the Legislature’s General Meeting, at which time the Legislators recognized their respective students. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade entered 129 science and engineering projects, which represented 38 elementary schools from across Suffolk County. Brookhaven Lab scientists, engineers, technical staff and teachers from local elementary schools judged the competition. “I congratulate all of the students for participating in this annual science fair during the pandemic and commend all who made this project possible during this time. I am especially proud of those students who live in my legislative district and I will be giving them proclamations to recognize their achievement of being a BNL science winner,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta (Fort Salonga, NY). Bank Of America Connects Long Island-Area Youth To Workforce Success Celebrating the 17th year of its Student Leaders program, Bank of America today announced that the five Long Island high school juniors and seniors selected as Student Leaders (#BofAStudentLeaders) have completed their paid summer internship experience of leadership, civic engagement, and workforce skills-building. In light of the health concerns that remain in local communities, the program was adapted to a virtual format, through which students had the opportunity to participate in sessions that exposed them to the vital role that nonprofits play in advancing community health, the importance of public private partnerships to advance social change, and a focus on building financial acumen. In addition, Student Leaders engaged in conversations focused on social justice, civil rights and how to build a more diverse and inclusive society and have the opportunity to gain a
better understanding of their personal finances through Better Money Habits®, Bank of America’s financial wellness and education platform. The United Way of Long Island and Bank of America have a longstanding partnership. The nonprofit was recently awarded coronavirus relief grant funding to increase capacity and access to their urgently needed community services and has mentored Student Leaders in previous years. “We at the United Way value our relationship with Bank of America and it is an honor to work with their Student Leaders. We have hosted Student Leaders since 2007 and admire their dedication to making a difference in our communities,” said Theresa A. Regnante, president and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “Although we are not working together in person this year, we had a successful summer
of building upon their leadership skills and learning from one another.” Bringing students from across the country together in order to discuss the role of citizenship and how cross sector collaboration creates community impact is a core component of the Student Leaders program. This year, 300 students gathered virtually for the Young America Together at Home program, delivered by the Close Up Foundation, which included discussion of finding one’s voice in order to effect change and pressing policy issues such as the economy, healthcare, the environment and immigration. “As a life-long resident of Long Island, I am consistently inspired by the impact our local Student Leaders have on their communities,” said Bob Isaksen, Long Island market president for Bank of America. “I’m happy to have welcomed our five newest students

As part of their Student Leader experience, each student received a $5,000 stipend to recognize them for their community achievements.
Recent estimates suggest that the number of disconnected youth – those who aren’t in school and don’t have a job – has likely tripled since last year and could be as high as 18 million. Without access to opportunities that build career skills, many young people may be left behind, leading to high rates of youth unemployment and hindering overall economic progress. In addition to Student Leaders, the bank invests in summer jobs for young people through its partnership with 40 summer youth employees working remotely across the Long Island market. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol
(LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk
of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent
weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills
more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly Delivers Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) has procured and personally delivered more than 8,500 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including cloth face masks, gloves and hand sanitizer, to local libraries, community groups, food pantries, churches and schools to assist them during the COVID-19 pandemic. The safe reopening of community spaces has been a top priority of Legislator Donnelly, and he has been working closely
with Suffolk County’s Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to dispense these critical supplies. Legislator Donnelly has made deliveries to the recently reopened North Babylon, Half Hollow Hills and South Huntington Public Libraries, TriCommunity and Youth Agency in Huntington, St. Elizabeth’s Church in Melville and Meals on Wheels. Legislator Donnelly was also able to honor the requests of the Deer Park and South
Huntington School Districts to provide PPE to students and staff as they prepare for the 2020-2021 school year. “Our exceptional and caring local organizations and schools are working hard to ensure a safe return for all, and I am pleased to be able to play a role in helping them take steps to return to some much needed normalcy,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank County Executive Steve Bellone and all those involved for ensuring the availability of these critical supplies.”

The facility is in need of donations of fruits and vegetables for the many animals rehabilitating in their care. Most needed items are unsalted nuts and non-perishables, baby food, Cheerios, tuna in water, oat bran and shelled nuts. How To Manage Low Bandwidth During Remote Learning Sessions
In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help
students overcome that challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions. • Reduce reliance on video during class sessions. Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking. • Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who prerecord content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments.
Educators can make themselves available via chat to answer questions students may have about their assignments. • Avoid video-based assignments. It can be difficult for students with low bandwidth to send very large files, such as videos. Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments. • Encourage students to sync files to their devices. Each device is different and each manufacturer has its own instructions on how to sync files to devices. But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them offline, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity. Low bandwidth poses a challenge for remote learners. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome low bandwidth so students can keep learning.
