tudents from the Northport High School Tour Choir were selected to perform the National Anthem before the football game between the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons at MetLife Stadium on August 21st. Prior to singing, the talented musicians ran out of the tunnel, a tradition the hometown Jets do before every game. Community Room Dedication
Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Town Council Members Mark Cuthbertson, Susan A. Berland and Tracey A. Edwards joined with the Huntington Housing Authority August 21st in dedicating the community room at the Gateway Gardens public housing project in honor of former Authority chairman Malcolm L. Tillim. Mr. Tillim served as chairman for about five years, from 2001through 2005. During his tenure, he led the effort to build the Millennium Hills development in Melville, one of two communities run under the auspices of the Authority. Millennium Hills is a mixed development (part ownership, part rental) that provides safe, decent
and affordable housing for low-to-moderate income families in the Town. Gateway Gardens, which the Authority owns, provides federallysubsidized public housing for low-income residents. Gateway Gardens recently underwent a $5 million renovation, including new exterior lighting, new kitchens and baths, new boilers, siding, appliances, windows and conversion from oil to gas heat. Among the areas undergoing renovation was the community room. At the dedication ceremony, current Housing Authority Chairman Robert Fonti noted that naming the community room after Mr. Tillim was a fitting tribute, not only because of his role at the Authority but
also because of his service to the community over more than half a century. Mr. Tillim is a former deputy Town attorney and chairman of the Suffolk County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. In addition to practicing law, he became a builder and real estate developer responsible for many developments, including Huntington Country Farms, one of the earliest condominium communities in the Town. Supervisor Petrone and Council Members Cuthbertson, Berland and Edwards all spoke about how they had sought out Mr. Tillim for advice and guidance in a number of areas over the years and of his efforts on behalf of Town residents.

Schubach, MD, Chairman, Dept. of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Winthrop - University Hospital, “The Life is Why Family Health Challenge was crafted to give families simple, quick, and fun weekly strategies to get healthier and prevent heart disease from a young age. These four categories will make a big impact on family health.” The Challenge is broken down into four themed weeks on the American Heart Association Facebook page, listed as an event, and offers free tools and resources throughout the week in the forum. This online group also allows parents and caregivers to support and connect during the challenge. The four-week challenge includes: • Week 1 –“My Cart is Why”– The American Heart Association recommends eating a variety of fruit and vegetable servings every day. Learn how to increase your fruit and veggie consumption on a budget. Make shopping a fun and easy activity for you and your kids.

Honorees Chosen The longtime commander of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Second Precinct will be the grand marshal and honors will be bestowed on a police officer wounded in the line of duty, a 101 year-old wartime aircraft worker, a volunteer chaplain at the VA medical center and two families with longtime contributions to the community as the Sixth Annual Huntington Awareness Day parade kicks off on Saturday, September 12th. First held in 2010, Huntington Awareness Day has become an annual tradition, with thousands of people turning out to celebrate the community’s unity, diversity and solidarity. As in previous years, bands, floats, vintage cars, service groups and local merchants will join the march down New York Avenue through Huntington Station from West Hills Road to the municipal parking lot between Railroad and Church Streets. The parking lot will also be the location of the annual Awareness Day fair, which will include performances by local artists and booths offering crafts and services. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and the fair will remain open until 5 p.m. Leading the parade as grand marshal will be Insp. Edward Brady, who retired last month after serving almost six years as commanding officer of the Second Precinct, which covers Huntington. Insp. Brady’s Suffolk County Police Department police career spanned 36 years, 14 of which were spent in various Second Precinct assignments. Also being honored from the SCPD is Officer Mark Collins. In March, Collins, a 12-year veteran of the force, was shot in the neck and hip a while chasing a suspected gang member who had fled after a traffic stop in Huntington Station. The suspect accused of shooting Collins is awaiting trial.
Collins, who in 2008 was named Second Precinct officer of the year and who previously had received a medal for helping save a man’s life during a house fire, has recovered from his injuries. The other honorees include: Sophie Sarro, a 101-year-old Huntington Station native who while trained as a seamstress worked during World War II helping to manufacture airplanes for Grumman Aircraft. She later worked in the machine shop at Republic Aviation, where she met her husband, Sal. A mother and grandmother, she is still active in Town senior clubs and in sewing robes and other items she donates to charitable organizations. Frank LaBarbara, a Korean War veteran and retired owner of an engineering and manufacturing company. He has volunteered for many years as a Eucharistic minister at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Northport. He has also co-chaired the employment network program at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs church for more than 20 years. The Harris family, whose patriarch, Rufus Harris, an accomplished mechanic, overcame segregation in South Carolina, moved to Huntington and founded an automobile repair shop, Rufus & Sons, which was one of the first African-American owned businesses in Huntington. The shop included two generations of the Harris family and was in business for 40 years. The Sorrentino family, who have been fixtures on the Huntington business scene for many years. Andrea Sorrentino has operated a shoe repair shop in Huntington village for 35 years. His sons, Pasquale and Andre, own an auto body shop. The have been active in civic and charitable affairs, as well as in the Huntington Fire Department, where Andre Sorrentino is a commissioner. For each of
the past five Thanksgivings, the family has given away 300 turkeys to needy families. “Every year, we celebrate the progress we have made as a community and single out some of the many worthy residents who have helped us get to where we are,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “This year’s honorees touch a broad range of areas, from running successful businesses to volunteering to help others to working to keep us all safe. I hope that everyone will join us at the parade to show our appreciation for their contributions.” “We hope that people will come to the parade and stay for the festival, which thanks to the generosity of our sponsors remains a great day of entertainment, free activities for children and a chance to learn about the many organizations offering services to help the community,” said parade founder Dolores Thompson, who co-chairs the event with Supervisor Petrone and Huntington Station Business Improvement District president Keith Barrett. “We work hard all year to make the community better, and it’s important to step back once a year and celebrate what we have done,” Barrett said. School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) alumni and former Student Ambassador Justin Greene was recently recognized as one of Long Island’s “30 Under 30” by The Huntington Chamber of Commerce. A previous member of SBPLI’s Half Hollow Hills FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Team #3624, the Thundercolts, Mr. Greene is entering his sophomore year at Ohio State University’s Fisher Business School. Recalling his time
with SBPLI, he was inspired to increase the robotics initiatives at his college and the neighboring school districts. Nominated for the award by an SBPLI judge from the FIRST competition, Mr. Greene, who is 19, was the youngest winner in 2015 and the second-youngest person to ever receive this honor. He received the award as a result of his dedication to SBPLI, FIRST, his current and former communities and the Half Hollow Hills School District, including his current role as a counselor at Park Shore Country Day Camp, which raises funds for SBPLI. While on the Thundercolts, Mr. Greene attended the FIRST World Championship as part of a Rookie All-Star FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team, and organized sponsor relationships for Park Shore Country Day Camp and School, among others. He furthered his leadership skills as a student ambassador in the Development Council of SBPLI, where he helped raise funds, design and run expansion campaigns across Long Island. Mr. Greene was also asked to speak to 1,000 attendees at SBPLI’s FIRST Long Island Regionals last year, at which he was honored as a FIRST Dean’s List finalist. He then continued on to the FIRST National Competition. Mr. Greene credits the skills and honors he acquired participating in SBPLI’s FIRST Robotics competitions for giving him the ambition and successful enterprising necessary to promote the program at the collegiate level. In his freshman year, Mr. Greene became a member of the Ohio State University FIRST Robotics Mentor Team,

a role in which mentors FIRST team members in high schools throughout Ohio. He also began lobbying for the creation of a student organization on the Ohio State campus that would represent the university’s competitive team, much like the Central Ohio Robotics Initiative (CORI) does for regional FIRST competitions statewide. Toward the end of the school year, Mr. Greene led an expansion project that introduced Pennsylvania State University students to FIRST in an effort to initiate a Big Ten collegiate conference division for the organization. “FIRST Robotics is unique because, while it is a competition for robot building, it also teaches life lessons and provides the platform for young and motivated students to collaborate, bond and gain perspective in the industry,” says Mr. Greene. “SBPLI especially provided me with the encouragement I needed to socialize and network with my peers. My participation and passion in FIRST has shown me just how fortunate I have been to be involved and how essential it is for me to remain so as an alumnus. I believe that every SBPLI student stands to gain technical and business skills through the organization, so I will do everything possible to continue to spread the program to colleges nationwide.” Mr. Greene returns this fall to Ohio State University, where he plans to join the ice hockey and flag football teams, in addition to rushing the fraternity Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT). He will also continue to promote his FIRST initiatives to universities and grade schools throughout the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Town Upgrades Connectivity Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson announce major upgrades to the Town’s electronic communications, improving the way residents interact with the Town online and providing visitors Internet access while at Town facilities. The Town recently completed a major revision of its mobile phone app, building on the popularity and utility of Huntington @ Your Service, the citizen request management system launched in 2012 to make it easier for residents to seek information and file requests for Town services. Since its inception on April 1st, 2012, the Town has received, and handled, more than 40,000 requests through Huntington @ Your Service. “Increasingly, people are using their smart phones to access all types of information and
to transact business,” Supervisor Petrone said. “This upgrade to the Town’s smart phone app helps keep pace with this trend by allowing residents to do on their phone what they previously needed desktop or laptop computers to access.” The improved phone app makes it easier for residents enter service requests. It also adds a variety of functions that link more seamlessly to the Town’s website and to social media. Users of the app will be able to take and upload images; integrate with their Facebook and Twitter accounts; read the Town’s news feed; access the Town’s mobile website; learn the refuse pickup day for a particular location; view and find recreation facilities, nearby restaurants, businesses, libraries based on location services. The phone app works on both IPhone and Android applications, and can be downloaded at both
the Apple App store and Google Play. On both sites, search for Huntington @ Your Service. The second change provides WiFi internet access in the Town Hall lobby and Town Board meeting room and at the Dix Hills Ice Rink. Plans call for the service to expand over the next six months to additional areas at Town Hall and at other selected Town facilities, including the Village Green Senior Center. “People look for WiFi access wherever they go, whether it is in a coffee shop, at an airport, in a doctor’s waiting room or in stores, and they have asked for it in public buildings,” Councilman Cuthbertson said. “These efforts directly address those requests, allowing residents to be online while transacting business at Town Hall or waiting while their children enjoy the Town’s ice rink.”

Invitational Gallery Show The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce the third of our Invitational Gallery Shows. This show, featuring Shain Bard, Puneeta Mittal, Pamela Waldroup and Constance Sloggatt Wolf, will begin with the Opening Reception on Friday, September 4th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Main Street Gallery, 213 Main Street in Huntington. The show runs through September 19th. All are welcome to attend. Shain Bard - Shain is an oil painter who received her BA and MFA from Lehman College. Her work has been exhibited across Long Island including in the Art League of LI,
The Heckscher Museum of Art and Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton. “People often say to me that they know that place [in a painting] that it has struck a chord in them and yet, while they are somehow familiar with the territory, they are also really ‘seeing’ it for the first time, too, in ways they had not seen before. It is of course, really as much of an internal place they are speaking about, as well as external. It is those moments when we most fully connect to our wondrous surroundings, those held-breath moments, that interaction with nature’s truths, where art is created.” Shain Bard
Puneeta Mittal - Puneeta graduated with an MA in studio art from Adelphi University and MFA from Long Island University. She is an adjunct professor at Adelphi University and exhibits her work in galleries across the U.S. and abroad. Oil paintings and ceramic works are her media of expression. “With a strong belief that everything that is born, grows and withers away to be yet born again incessant change from one to another proceeds in an evolutionary cycle - clay has proved to be an ideal medium for her expressions. Her love for color and textures in nature - internal and
external, has proved to be an unlimited resource for the blank canvas” Pamela Waldroup - “A digital photographer/ printmaker on a life-long search to find order in chaos through observation of the accidental series of commonalities that occur around us everyday, in every moment. Her Interactions series of photographs engages the viewer, the subject, and the surroundings caught in those moments.” Pamela received her BFA from Ohio University and her MA in drawing and printmaking from LIU, CW Post Center. Her work has been exhibited in national and local galleries and
museums on Long Island. Constance Sloggatt Wolf - Constance is both an artist and educator. She trained in the Fine Arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (BFA) and Long Island University (MFA).” I study Nature first, searching for primary, universal forms and ideas, symbols that all human beings may relate to. Inspired by the visceral beauty of my materials, I approach the work openly tapping into this understanding of the natural world and allowing the act of painting to transform knowledge into a visual dialogue.” Constance work has been exhibited publicly, privately and in corporate

Students entering thirdgrade at James H. Boyd Intermediate School, sixthgrade at Elwood Middle School and ninth-grade at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School received a sneak peak of the school year after participating in their respective school buildings’ orientation on August 25th. During the orientations, students were educated on the building procedures, received their class
schedule and interacted with their fellow classmates. Following a presentation led by building administrators, incoming third-grade and ninth-grade students went on a tour of the school building led by upperclassmen. At the middle school, soon-to-be sixth-graders received their Google Chromebooks, which they will use for the duration of their education at Elwood Middle School.

Buddies Bond To continue tradition, incoming ninth-grade students at Harborfields High School participated in the district’s Buddy Program as a way to become familiar with their new school building. To begin the two-day orientation, members of the Harborfields High School faculty, administration and PTSA gathered in the high school
auditorium to greet the soon-to-be ninth-graders. During the evening event, Harborfields High School Principal Dr. Rory Manning advised parents and students about the new challenges, opportunities and expectations freshmen students can anticipate during their next four years of high school. The following day, ninth-graders were
welcomed back for the Buddy Program. As part of the program, upperclassmen at the high school volunteer their time to mentor the newest members to the school. The mentors answered freshman questions, gave their buddy a tour of the building and helped them find their lockers and classrooms.

Summer’s Swan Song By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And there it is. Not two days into September, and the autumn zealots are out in force, proclaiming the “end” of summer to be upon us. Never mind the fact that the calendar still calls for a full three weeks of the season. Nope. Pack away the bathing suits, close up the pools, pay no mind to the warm radiance of the sun. Fall has arrived. Clearly, I’m not thrilled by this rush to transition. While I can appreciate the glory of autumn in all its splendor, I’m pretty sure that I recall there being many who spent the better part of last winter counting down the days to summer. What happened? Had
your fill of beautiful beach days? Grown tired of sunlit evenings and family barbecues in the backyard? I can understand the school year dictating some sort of routine for those still beholden to a bell schedule; but for the rest of us, there is simply no excuse to not savor these remaining weeks. “Summer vacation” may be over, but for those of us who haven’t been fortunate to take advantage of it, this is the prime time for long weekends and late afternoons spent soaking in the last rays of sunshine at the beach. The best part? While everyone else is off returning to his/her regularly scheduled
programs, the rest of us are left to enjoy the solitude. Not a bad tradeoff. If there is anything we have learned in recent years, it is that Mother Nature has infinitely more impact on our lives than the calendar year. We have had hurricanes at Halloween, snow for Thanksgiving and 70º days leading up to Christmas. You never can tell. But, in this case, the calendar says summer and the weather concurs. Savor it. Grab your bathing suit, pick up a few hot dogs and kick back in a lounge chair. Autumn will wait. In fact, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t even arrived yet.

Student Spotlight IT ALL STARTS WITH A SEED SUBMITTED BY: PHILIP LANZARONE, AGE 15, WEST ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL
One thing that has definitely puzzled my head is why the school year can seem to be so cyclic. It reaches the point where I am occasionally sickened by it. How does one make each day exciting? How can one feel motivated enough to awaken from bed and aspire? “Aspire to do what?” you might ask. Aspire to distinguish this day from others and consider it memorable. This will undoubtedly break that cycle and in fact inscribe a new tale into the course of one’s life. Distinction is key. Distinction is golden. If you need to ask how you can perform such a task, I will happily recommend what to do. These have certainly assisted me in differentiating one day from others. Firstly, be open to listening to others. If you shut out yourself from the rest of the world, you’ll feel confined and limited. If someone comes up to you and asks if you want to hang out with them - take that invitation. And if you are stuck on something and offered help, accept that person’s advice and see. Just see! Who knows? You might just bridge the gap between the first part and the second part.
The second part is to make more friends. You know, amigos, companions, even acquaintances. Call them whatever you’d like, as long as it’s appropriate. Just obtain a few. Also, be sure that they are true friends. By “true,” I mean that they are spending time with you because they are fond of you as a person. If they are with you only because they envy you for some of your possessions, then they are not true friends. Following the first two parts will lead one to the third and final part, which is to make light. Express levity whenever and wherever you can. Make jokes at the appropriate instances. This is helpful because one is always going to withstand pessimistic days and experience exuberant days. See? These three steps can aid in making school days and any day more excitingly different. If this has motivated you to take action and get on top of the cycle, give yourself small applause and two big thumbs up! Now, this all may sound well and good; however, only you can make it happen! So get up, vow to alter the chain of events for your greater benefit, and distinguish!

Habitat Home Dedication It was a surreal moment for Anton and Elizabeth Madaia, along with their son Josiah Ryan, daughter Aria, and dogs, Selah and Belle, as they received the keys to their forever home in Shirley during Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s dedication ceremony. Anton and Elizabeth are high school sweethearts who have been together since the age of 16. Anton works for Cablevision in
Technical Support and volunteers a lot of his time to his local church, where he is the head audio/ video engineer and their “go to guy” for all things technical. Together, Anton and Elizabeth volunteer every week at their church youth group. Elizabeth is a stayat-home mom and loves that Anton’s job allows her to raise Josiah and Aria full time. Before giving
birth to Josiah, she worked with the developmentally disabled for eight years. The house sponsor is Astoria Bank, one of Habitat of Suffolk’s longest standing financial partners. Legislator Kate Browning and Councilman Dan Panico were on hand to support the Madaia family as they cut the ribbon.
