The 15 participating teens attended weekly battle meetings. The Lighthouse Musicfest was started in 2006 to increase awareness of the Huntington Lighthouse plight and to bring a unique FUNdraising event to the Long Island boating community. Join the fun on Saturday, September 3rd starting at 11 a.m. and continuing until dusk. Bands play from the roof of the Lighthouse and this year’s musical lineup includes: Ed Travers Band, Stagecoach, King Wellington, Dr. K’s Motown Revue, FreeRide, Milagro, Joe Rock and the Allstars, Pamela Betti Band and Santosha. Attendance has grown to over 1,100 boats with over 12,000 people attending by yacht, boat, kayak, canoe, inner-tube or any other mode of water transportation they find to reach the lighthouse. The Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, Inc. (formerly, Save Huntington’s Lighthouse, Inc.) was formed in 1985 by concerned citizens to prevent the tear down and demolition of the Lloyd Harbor Light Station and its replacement with an automated light tower by the United States Coast Guard. The objectives of the organization are to restore, preserve and maintain the historic lighthouse listed on the National Historic Register as the Huntington Harbor Lighthouse. The organization is dedicated to ongoing preservation of the interior and exterior and preserve it for public use as an educational and historic resource while maintaining its use as an active Aid to Navigation. It takes a village, or in this case, a “city that never sleeps,” to put together a true Honor Flight experience. We look forward to working with the talent and patriotism that we know resides in the Big Apple.” Big Apple Honor Flight is a hub of the national Honor Flight Network whose mission is to transport veterans to Washington D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor and to receive the recognition they deserve for all of their sacrifices. BAHF’s first one-day, all-expense-paid trip for these veterans will depart from John F. Kennedy International Airport on an American Airlines charter flight. The national Honor Flight Network includes more than 130 hubs in 44 states across the country. Since its inception in 2005,
over 159,703 veterans have been flown to D.C. on an Honor Flight. In 2015 alone, Honor Flight hubs serviced 20,886 veterans nationally. Not until now has an official Honor Flight been organized out of New York City, where the population of WWII veterans is estimated to be in the thousands. “Of all the wars in our nation’s history, it is World War II that threatened the very existence of America as a culturally diverse and free society,” added Maher. “According to the Veterans Administration, an estimated 430 WWII Veterans die each day nationally. Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing their event to the Big Apple! The first-ever Big Apple Honor Flight will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War II, on the “Flight of a Lifetime” next year on their inaugural trip on April 29th, 2017. Organizers of Big Apple Honor Flight have started the planning process and are looking for volunteers and veterans to make their mission possible. The group has launched www. BigAppleHonorFlight. com, which contains additional information on how to get involved in the planning. Applications to apply to be a veteran honored on the flight can also be found on the website. They plan to take 75 WWII veterans on their first flight from NYC in the spring. These spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. “The purpose of today’s announcement is to spread the word to WWII veterans and their family members that Big Apple Honor Flight is here to serve New York City’s heroes of the Greatest Generation,” said

Leadership Experience Long Island University (LIU) and Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) welcomed future business leaders from across the nation and their mentors to the LIU Post campus this summer for intensive business skill development through the weeklong “Entrepreneurial Leadership Experience.” Entrepreneurial Leadership Experience students were assigned to teams and given five days to develop and launch their own virtual businesses. The teams collaborated on their business ideas in LIU Post’s on-campus startup incubator, advised by faculty from LIU’s AACSB-accredited College of Management, now in its 14th year as one of the
Princeton Review’s “Best Business Schools.” At the conclusion of the program, the students pitched their businesses to a mix of reallife entrepreneurs and LIU Post faculty in the “Fueled Concepts” competition, modeled on the hit show Shark Tank. “This week taught me about how to work under pressure in a short period of time,” said Hayla Hurt of Creedmoor, N.C. “The space here in the incubator motivated me to get a lot of work done.” As they prepared to make their presentations, the students also engaged in a series of smaller competitions and participated in workshops designed to hone specific business skills, including networking, public
speaking, and commercial production. “I feel like I took something away from each speaker and learned from the program as a whole,” said Rickey Alford of East Windsor, N.J. “I learned how to work better as part of a team, and that’s something that I needed.” VEI students also toured the New York City offices of Microsoft, explored the Bloomberg terminals of LIU Post’s on-campus trading floor, and learned about the work that LIU Post students are doing for corporate clients as part of LIU-iQ Consulting, the University’s fee-based student-led consultancy. “VEI is a special program because for high school students it often provides their first glimpse,
albeit virtually, at how a company operates and what it needs to succeed,” said Ray Pullaro, assistant dean of the College of Management, who served as a judge for the final competition. “LIU Post allows these students to expand that initial understanding into realworld experience through our engaged learning programs such as LIU-iQ Consulting, our studentrun businesses, and our participation in Start-Up NY.” While their students were developing their pitches and learning about the engaged learning opportunities available at LIU Post, VEI teachers from more than 120 schools in 10 U.S. states and Bermuda were engaged

Several Elwood Middle School students spent the summer months engaged in their love for reading at the local public library and earned recognition in the Suffolk County Battle of the Books competition. “Battle of the Books is an event sponsored by the Suffolk Cooperative Library System where teens in grades six through nine from almost 50 libraries across the county go to head-to-head in a trivia competition based on eight young adult novels,” said
Elwood Public Library teen librarian Jessica Bouchelle. The 15 participating teens attended weekly battle meetings starting at the end of June. Six participants represented the library in the Battle of the Books – Cateyann Bernhard, Sasha Jamal, Chloe Keil, Hannah Kleinman, Caitriona Meehan and Rithika Narayan. The middle school team, the Elwood Book Eaters, earned sixth place overall in the competition and
earned two nonscoring awards – Team Choice and Best Sportsmanship. The Team Choice award winner was selected by the other participating teams and the sportsmanship accolade was awarded by the battle’s judges. “These two awards show [the] character and true spirit of our Elwood teens,” said Bouchelle, who coached the team alongside assistant Matthew Pinto. “The girls did an amazing job. I am so proud of them.”

Musicians Tapped for Anthems Congratulations to the Northport High School Tour Choir and the Northport High School Tiger Marching Band, Flagline and Tigerettes, as both ensembles have been selected to perform the National Anthem at two separate professional sporting events in the weeks to come. The Tour Choir has been invited back to MetLife Stadium to perform the National Anthem on Saturday, August 27th prior to the New York Jets vs. New York Giants preseason football game. Most of the more than 110 grade 7-12 students who participated in this year’s high school summer
choir clinic are expected to perform. The group also performed the Anthem at MetLife Stadium last year. “I am really excited to return to MetLife Stadium,” said Northport High School senior Tess Robinson. “It was such a rewarding experience. It is a great way to kick off my senior year” “We continue to be humbled the choir’s dedication to singing the National Anthem in representation of our great country,” said Choir CoDirector Ellen McCarthy. Not to be outdone, Northport High School’s Tiger Marching Band, Flagline and Tigerettes have been selected will
perform the Anthem at Citi Field on Friday, Sept. 23 to kick of the New York Mets game against the Phillies. “On behalf of the entire music department I congratulate these students and all of the music teachers who have played a hand in their success,” said Dr. Izzet Mergen, Northport-East Northport Director of Fine and Performing Arts. “We are proud to have them perform live at two major sporting events before audiences of tens of thousands of fans. Honorees Named The Seventh Annual Huntington Awareness Day will be held on Saturday, September 10th, with a day-long fair that will include bounce rides for children, music for adults and lots of fun and food for all. The Huntington Awareness Day Committee will also recognize one organization and three distinguished residents for their contributions to the community. The fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the municipal parking lot on New York Avenue between Railroad and Church Streets, with a brief program scheduled for noon. Among those to be recognized during the program are: The Huntington Hispanic Soccer League, which for the past 26 years has run programs at the Town’s Manor Field Park. Currently, the league has ten teams and about 150 players ranging in age from 16 to 40 years old. Dr. Lehti Laas Ramos, a lifelong Huntington Station resident who has been active in the Huntington Community First Aid Squad, helped found the Huntington Station Happy Helpers and has been affiliated with the Friends of the Huntington Train Station, the Huntington branch of the NAACP, the Friends of Huntington Station Latin Quarter, Gateway Park and the Blue Star Mothers’ water bottle collection. Frances Cerra Whittelsey, who as executive director of the Long Island Community Agriculture Network was a driving force in starting the Gateway Park Community Garden in Huntington Station. She has served as a member of the Huntington Town recycling advisory committee, was a board member of the Huntington Housing Coalition and was instrumental in the formation of the
Huntington Interfaith Housing Initiative, which shelters homeless men every winter. She is an award-winning journalist, cited for her work focusing on consumer abuses and investigations. Sara Bluestone, a 30-year Huntington resident who has served as President of the Leadership Huntington Foundation’s Board of Directors and currently serves as a Co-Chair of the LHF President’s Council and Treasurer of The Huntington Community Council. Trained in the arts and photography, Ms. Bluestone’s career in the arts and arts administration has ranged from being the preservation curator of the famed Bettmann Archive in New York City, to administering NYS Council for the Arts grants for the Huntington Arts Council. She has volunteered her time for the Huntington Union Free School District PTA’s Arts in Education Committee and in 2001, helped found the Town’s Public Arts Advisory Committee. She served as its Chair from 2001–2008. “This year’s fair should be the biggest and best one yet, bringing together many segments of our community to express our commitment to working together toward the common goal of improving our Town – the type of commitment exemplified by our honorees,” said Huntington Supervisor Frank P. It’s that time of year again, that period of transition between seasons that seems to sneak up on us so quickly, yet stretch so luxuriously over the month of September, giving us the best of both worlds; the last lingering rays of summer sunshine mixed with the brisk chill of autumn air, ushering in pumpkin harvests and apple picking and all the holiday seasons which follow. What better time of year to appreciate all that nature has to offer, to savor the sunsets while looking ahead to the foliage, to dip your toes in the ocean one
last time while unpacking the fall wardrobe – and maybe shop for a few new accessories. It is a time for new beginnings, and for endings; for the start of the school year and the final days of summer leisure. Sure, every seasonal transition has its own benefits; but there is something about September… something uniquely magical about the twilight of summer and the golden glow of autumn that exceeds them all. This is why it’s so important to slow down and appreciate each day, each stage of metamorphosis, as they each bring their own special respective nuances.
So, enjoy these next three weeks, summer’s swan song; and look ahead to the autumnal equinox with equal anticipation. Each sunbeam, each fallen leaf… they each hold their own special significance. It is up to us to recognize these special gifts, and to hold onto them as the annual winter chill approaches, along with the chaos of the holiday season. New York State has designated a 640-acre part of Huntington Station as a Brownfield Opportunity Area, augmenting revitalization efforts in the community by making projects eligible for tax credit incentives and giving them priority status for grants. The Huntington BOA, which has the Huntington Long Island Rail Road station at its center, includes parcels on which the Town, in concert with Huntington Station Master Developer Renaissance Downtowns, have proposed two mixed-use buildings, a hotel, an office building and an artists’ residence. In its application to the state, the Town noted that the BOA designation was part of the broader Huntington Station revitalization effort to create a “cohesive and inviting place enlivened by new neighborhoods and business activity.” The application described the area as including at least 27 potential brownfield sites and is comprised of garages, surface parking lots, and vacant or underutilized parcels located around

A Day in Our Shoes Angela’s House, sponsored by Long Island Applebee’s locations, will be hosting their 2nd annual 3K Walk at the Holtsville Ecology Center on Sunday, September 18th. Join for a family day of fun! Walkers, Wheelchairs and Strollers are welcome! Over 100 children will be walking and rolling along with their parents, siblings, family, friends, nurses and other supporters. Invite your friends and family and create a team to raise awareness and funds for Angela’s House. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and the event will kick-off (rain or shine) at 10:30 a.m. Other special activities associated with the walk include visiting the on-site zoo, a live DJ, lunch provided by Applebee’s and other fun activities! They are walking to raise awareness about the limited options that children born and diagnosed as being medically frail, chronically ill or suffering from any type of life threatening condition(s) have as far as services available to help them when and/or if they leave the hospital. These children have medical
conditions that often require intensive nursing care, and other services that, if are available, are very fragmented and difficult to coordinate. The daunting task of home care is extremely overwhelming, especially without an agency available to coordinate the services needed to support such child at home. Until Angela’s House, there were no local specialized homes or facilities available that could care for these children and their unique needs. The nearest facilities were often out of state, leaving families in a very difficult position – have their child in a setting where they would receive quality care and travel hours to see them, or place them in a non-age appropriate setting and have them close to home. These voids in the system make a horrifying situation even worse. Angela’s House, founded in 1992, offers hope for families and children living with severe medical conditions. Their home care programs works with over 600 children that live at home with their parents, by coordinating the home
care services needed to support these children living at home. This may include services such as: medical equipment, nursing support, therapies, medications and making their homes handicapped accessible. Angela’s House also has three beautiful specialty homes that have the ability to offer children, with often very severe medical needs, the therapeutic, nursing and potential long-term care required. The American Heart Association is proud to have Thomas Wrightington serving as the 2016 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cape” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 18th at Jones Beach. Thomas was in the third grade when he found out he had a congenital heart defect, specifically an aortic valve insufficiency and a PFO (hole in his heart). Thomas loves sports and loves playing them. He also wants to spread awareness and help the American Heart Association so kids like him can live stronger and healthier lives. At the Heart Walk, survivors are celebrated. A “Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart surgery who wear the red
caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Pediatric cardiovascular disease survivors will receive red super hero capes to acknowledge their courage. As Red Cape Ambassador for the Long Island Heart Walk, Thomas will help create awareness about the importance of survivors participating in the event and to create awareness that heart disease and stroke aren’t “just an older man’s diseases.” Hundreds of survivors from across Long Island participate to show that heart disease and stroke can be beaten. The American Heart Association estimates there are more than 71 million Americans alive with one or more types of cardiovascular disease.

While that’s great news for students, it also illustrates the sad fact that arts and music programs have taken a considerable hit in recent decades, when arts education fell victim to budget cuts.

A 2003 study commissioned by Chorus America found musicians are more likely than the average person to be involved in charity work as volunteers and donors. The NAfME also notes that music students may be more likely to exhibit empathy toward other cultures.
Music can improve selfesteem. In a study examining 117 fourth grade students attending public school in Montreal, a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin found that children who received piano lessons weekly for three years had higher self-esteem than children who were not given piano lessons during the same period. Neither group had participated in formal music instruction before the study, and students in both groups reported similar levels of self-esteem prior to participating in the study. Music education can enrich the lives of young students in a myriad of ways, potentially contributing to happier, more fulfilling lives.
Classroom Tech Trends to Watch Technology continues to evolve. With computers, tablets and smartphones, people of all ages are immersed in technology. According to the Pew Research Center, 56 percent of teens between the ages of 13 and 17 go online several times a day. Teens are not just relying on technology at home or while on the go, but they’re also doing so in school. Schools are now recognizing how influential mobile technologies are on students and how they can shape teaching and thinking. As a result, technology is now a major component in the

Classroom Smartboards: Described as large tablets, smartboards have all but replaced chalkboards and even dry erase boards in many schools. Teachers can present lessons through the display, and students interact with the board to answer questions. Technology use in the classroom continues to grow as students and educators grow more accustomed to using technology in all aspects of life.
