Free. *** Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, September 9th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of our present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Learn how lighthouse Keepers in the 1860’s to 2017 maintained the light. This event includes a tour of the Lens Building and the Boat House. The tour takes approximately two and a half hours. An eclipse, a fox and a whale … what’s next? A zebra? These were the words overheard at Robert Moses Field 5 on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st, spoken by a little boy as he incredulously recounted the events of the day. Nearly 30 years his senior, I have to say I shared the sentiment. What started as a somewhat spontaneous vacation day to spend relaxing on the beach, perhaps catching a glimpse of the highly publicized 70% of a solar eclipse, turned into a relative bucket list of random natural sightings the likes of which couldn’t have been better orchestrated if one tried. After stealing a look at the crescent of golden light as the sky subtlety darkened around us, we decided it was only slightly as impressive as promised. The reactions from those on the surrounding beach blankets ranged from, Oh wow, that was incredible! to Wait, which end is it eclipsing from?
I don’t see anything? Luckily for them, the afternoon promised more stellar sights to behold. As the sun began peeking out once again, a commotion erupted up on the sand behind us, as a small crowd gathered around what at first glance appeared to be a stray dog. Upon further inspection, it proved to be a small furry fox, munching on a bagel, as he calmly eyed the growing swarm of beachgoers. He then trotted down the beach, bouncing from one blanket to the next, pausing under one woman’s umbrella as she sat engrossed in a book. Eventually, someone summoned a lifeguard, who determined that this particular fox was most likely a few years old and, though seemed friendly, was probably best left alone in pursuit of his dinner. As the crowd gradually dispersed, the sound of applause was heard down by the water. We turned to see everyone facing west, lifeguards included,
eyes fixated on something in the ocean. What now, is someone drowning? one lady was heard muttering. Well, I doubt the lifeguards would be standing applauding if that was the case, her husband retorted. As we made our way down to the shoreline, we saw a giant spray of water shoot up from the horizon, followed by a humpback whale flipping through the air and disappearing below the surf. Again, the crowd cheered. And again, the whale leapt into the air, as if taking a bow. I grabbed my phone and attempted to capture the sight, only to find myself filming several minutes of motionless water. But then, at last, he emerged once more. Out for yet another encore. As we headed back to our beach blanket, we passed the little boy as he breathlessly encapsulated the day’s happenings. I have to say, I half expected a zebra to come barreling over the sand dunes. It was that kind of afternoon.

It was lightly raining But I went outside Ordered sad thoughts to hide. I looked at my plants, bushes and trees To my childhood went my thought When some flowers I picked not bought. We could no yard call our own To find some foliage I went out all alone. I walked streets and fields Came home with flowers and greens On my desk, they were seen. Here those treasures were all my own Planted by me and nicely grown Most in past months flowers had shown. I found still some roses on a bush All else just green branches but lush I even mixed weeds with the display. Wondered, why to some “weeds” we say I liked what I did pick and see Took it inside in secret glee. Into my most expensive vase The varied array I did stick Yes, I much liked my odd pick. Creativity, just like in poetry Gives one an inner reward Ignites a positive feeling of sort.

Superintendent’s Forum On Monday, September 18th, Elwood Union Free School District’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert will host a community forum to update residents on the potential bond referendum that is being considered by the board of education.
The forum will begin at 7 p.m. in the Elwood Middle School auditorium. This meeting is a followup to the community forum held last March, during which Dr. Bossert presented a potential scope of work to residents. “We’ve refined the scope
of work based on the feedback we received last spring,” said Dr. Bossert. “In addition, the district’s facilities committee has met several times since then to further evaluate the projects. We look forward to sharing this update with the community

Scout Scholarship
Martin said, “I was in shock when I learned about being the selected winner and that it’s the Strupore family who makes the final decision. I’m overwhelmed and thrilled to be the winner in 2017.” He is an active Boy Scout having joined scouting later than most having never been involved as a Cub Scout. Mr. Martin earned his Eagle Scout rank in Troop 406 (Melville/ Huntington) on April 25th, 2016 and was presented with his bronze palm during his court of honor ceremony. His Eagle Scout community service project was to create a “Reading Garden” which consisted of three benches and a small garden at the Birchwood Intermediate School which he attended from 3rd thru 5th grade. Congratulations to Troop 406’s Andrew Martin, the 2017 Anthony J. Stupore Memorial Scout Scholarship recipient. The scholarship is awarded annually to one outstanding Suffolk County Council (BSA) Scout in recognition of their community service, leadership skills and Scout Spirit. Eagle Scout Martin was recognized with the award during the annual William H.Sample and Anthony J. Stupore Memorial “Good Scout” golf outing on June 19th, held at the Huntington Country Club. As the only recipient of the Anthony J. Stupore Memorial Scout Scholarship, he learned he was the winner after a message was left on his home voice mail. Coincidentally, he was attending his own Senior Awards Night at Walt Whitman High School and from there went directly to his weekly scout troop meeting. Mr.
Scouts in the 2017 graduating class at Whitman High School, Mr. Martin will be attending Misericordia University in Dallas, PA in September, studying Government, Law, and National Security “with a focus in a career in any of these paths in the future” said Andrew Martin. The 2017 Anthony J. Stupore Memorial Scout Scholarship is awarded annually to one Boy Scout who meets the criteria of being a registered Boy Scout, active in his unit, a senior in high school, and accepted by either a two or four year college. Mr. Martin had to submit an essay on how he had demonstrated leadership skills in Scouting and in his personal life, describe how he had exhibited involvement in community service, and tell about what lesson(s) he had learned to help him throughout life. In addition, he had to submit letters of recommendation from his Scoutmaster and from a high school teacher or guidance counselor. The Anthony J. Stupore Memorial Scout Scholarship Award is for $1,000 and is renewable for up to three years based on maintaining a 2.75 or better GPA after his freshman year and a 3.0 GPA or better after each succeeding year.

Parks Watch Program Looking to “RID” County Parks of illegal dumping, Suffolk officials today announced the launch of its newly created “Parks Watch” program that will provide greater citizen involvement in the protection of county owned public lands. Modeled after the highly effective national Community Watch program, “Parks Watch” asks parks users and adjacent property owners to be partners
in ridding our parks of debris by notifying police and Suffolk County Parks Department personnel. Tips of suspicious activity can now be called into the program’s dedicated RID hotline at 631.854.1423 or emailed to RID@ suffolkcountyny.gov. In advance of today’s announcement, the Suffolk County Parks Department has begun posting signs about the program and ways in which visitors can
provide tips to authorities. Beyond new signs, the Parks Department will also begin a social media and public awareness campaign to highlight the importance of this new program and of protecting our public lands from illegal and potentially toxic debris. “We are pleased to be able to add another layer of protection for our parks,” Parks Commissioner Philip Berdolt said. “With
the assistance of our park patrons, we will be able to reduce instances of vandalism, dumping and other misuses, and ensure that people can use the parks safely.” “Parks Watch” was created through Resolution 37-2017, sponsored by Legislator Kara Hahn, Chairwoman of the Legislature’s Parks and Recreation Committee, and follows the discoveries of illegal
