Realizing the importance of enhancing public access to the popular outer beach, the Department of Parks and Recreation updated its Endangered Species Protection Program with the goal of complying with federal conservation laws while fostering greater public access to the outer beach. “Through careful planning and enhanced monitoring of the federally-protected plover, we were able to strike a balance to protect the plover while enhancing access to the outer beach for our four-wheel drive enthusiasts,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “I would like to commend all those involved in the protection efforts and also the general public for their cooperation and understanding.” When first launched in 1997, the Endangered Species Protection Program resulted in 32 pairs of plovers producing 28 fledges. This year’s numbers produced 62 pairs with 100 fledges, the highest number of fledges in the program’s history. Now that the fledglings are grown, the outer beach has been returned to full access to the public and four-wheel drive beach vehicle enthusiasts. Plover Facts · Typical clutch is four eggs with each egg being laid every other day. · Takes estimated 27 days for eggs to hatch, and additional 25 to 35 days for chicks to fly. · Once hatched, chicks are mobile within hours. · Parents do not feed chicks, therefore they are constantly on the move from shoreline to dunes in search of food. Once chicks become mobile, the need to protect becomes a greater challenge for the stewards and partial beach closures are necessary. However, with careful daily monitoring, the closures are lifted whenever possible to accommodate greater public access. The implementation of protective measures

It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task
of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.
At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

The loss a nest due to human or predator intervention may result in the plover pairs re-nesting thus re-starting the nestto-fledge cycle. Phil Berdolt, Commissioner of the Suffolk County Parks Department said “One goal of the program is to ensure the first nest is successful and not disturbed. This will result in our beaches opening sooner for full public access. If the plovers need to re-nest, the process is delayed and partial beach closures extended.”

While for security purposes he cannot share the details of how he rescued her, he can share the condition he was in. He was extremely dehydrated, starving, and in need of medical care. He rescued him, led him to good health, and has created a solid bond with him. Knowing that he would return to the U.S., he reached out to Guardians of Rescue to see if they could help with the risky mission of helping him relocate the dog back to America. “I saved Hilal once and now I’m hoping that through the Guardians of Rescue people can help me save him a second time,” added Gomez. “I can’t live with the idea of leaving him behind, because I know what will happen to
him, and we have a strong bond. I need to take him back to Oklahoma with me.” Guardians of Rescue are experience at helping soldiers bring their dogs back to the country. They have a team of experts who work at every step of the mission to ensure the dog makes it safely back to the country. Hilal will first be flown into New York, and then will be taken on to Gomez’ home state of Oklahoma, where the two will be reunited for good. It’s a mission that is not only risky, but is also costly, which is why the rescue group is teaming up with those in the public who support the mission and can help make it a reality. “When we pull off a mission like this we cannot do it alone,” adds Misseri. “This is a mission that takes the support of people in the community who want to give back and help this soldier and his dog. Even small donations help, because they all add up
quickly.” This is a time-sensitive mission, so the rescue group will need to act quickly. All donations are welcome and appreciated, with no amount being too small. Imagine being an American soldier stationed in a part of the world where a “holy war on dogs” has been declared. In America, dogs are considered man’s best friend. But in some places in the Middle East, the complete opposite is true, creating a harsh environment for the animals. One U.S. Army Specialist stationed in the Middle East couldn’t idly stand by and watch a puppy being left for dead. Not only did he step in to save it, but he reached out to Guardians of Rescue to help relocate it back to America, where he will make the dog, he named Hilal, a part of his fur-ever family. “He has a heart of gold, has saved this dog, and can’t bear to leave it behind in a place where it will likely lead to its death,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “Hilal deserves better than that, and so does this soldier who has served his country

50 Years of Service The Centerport Fire Department recently honored Ex-Chief Paul Heglund for his 50 years of active and dedicated service. Heglund served as Chief of the Department from 1996-1997, was a
past EMT and Centerport Rescue Squad member for nearly 30 years, and is currently the Deputy Chief Chaplain. Heglund received awards from the Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs’
Council, Fireman’s Association of the State of NY, Governor Andrew Cuomo and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recognizing his 50 years of service.
Responsive Classroom Method For the past few years, more and more educators within the NorthportEast Northport School District have been learning and implementing the discipline of Responsive Classroom - a teaching approach that’s made up of specific practices to create a joyful, safe, engaging classroom and school community. The approach’s emphasis is placed on helping students, in addition to developing academic skills, to build upon social and emotional skills in a safe learning environment. During the month of August, interested teachers at Bellerose Avenue Elementary School took part in a two-part professional
development workshop focused on implementing Responsive Classroom’s integral elements. During the workshop, curriculum coordinator Dana Ward, classroom teacher Patti DaCosta and speech and language specialist Judy Schneider covered the basics of Responsive Classroom, including morning meeting, quiet time, closing circle, energizers, interactive modeling and teacher language. “All of these teachers are here by choice - they want to learn ways to make learning more engaging for their students,” Mrs. Ward said. “They are hungry for improved learning.” Throughout the training, the teacher-presenters
modeled much of the behavior as they covered each practice. Each topic raised healthy discussion and differing viewpoints amongst the educators, such as specific instances in which to use reinforcing language - a specific approach of highlighting students’ strengths in a helpful way. “The feedback we received from our teachers was so helpful,” Mrs. Schneider said. “They’d much rather a few focused, intensive professionaldevelopment opportunities than a plethora of sporadic subjects, and their responses to the offerings have been overwhelmingly positive so far.”

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), together with the Town of Babylon, will be hosting an “Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park” on Saturday, October 13th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (rain date October 14th). The event will take place at the AFA-Town of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park (200 East Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst), which serves residents with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. Proceeds raised from the event will support the Respite Care Relief Park. Individuals of all ages are invited to take part in the walk to raise Alzheimer’s awareness and support local families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The family-friendly event will also feature health and wellness activities, music, entertainment, children’s activities and refreshments. Free, confidential memory and hearing screenings will also be offered.
“More than 50,000 Long Island families are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and this event is all about bringing people together to support them. Each person who participates in the walk will be making a difference,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president and CEO. “We invite everyone to walk with us on October 13th and enjoy a fun-filled day of activities, all while helping Long Islanders living with Alzheimer’s disease.” “I encourage all of our residents to come be a part of this great event. Whether you have dealt with Alzheimer’s firsthand or not, it is a great opportunity to support your friends, neighbors and other members of our community who do. Thank you to the members of the AFA team for all of their hard work in the planning of this walk and I am looking forward to a great day,” said Babylon Town Supervisor, Rich Schaffer. Located next to Babylon Town Hall, it is a peaceful, scenic, dementia-friendly place where caregivers can go to take a break and enjoy the outdoors, as well as feel comfortable bringing a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another dementiarelated illness. The Park includes educational information about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, along with benches, a brick walkway, a gazebo and landscaping. Docking stations are also available where people can plug in phones to play music, which often aids in memory and brain stimulation.
