departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

Video Scholarship Contest The Pedestrian Education Video Scholarship Competition is offered by the New York State Coalition for Transportation Safety. The competition is part of the Walk Safe Long Island campaign organized by the Long Island Health Collaborative in partnership with the Coalition and health and safety educators from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Some Long Island communities have a particularly poor driving record and are among the worst in the state. When New York State communities were ranked by the number of pedestrian crashes that occurred between 2009 and 2013, Long Island communities accounted for eight of the top twenty communities ranked, and Hempstead had the highest
number of crashes of all communities in upstate New York and Long Island. Other ranked communities included Brookhaven (number 7), Islip (number 8), Oyster Bay (number 9), N. Hempstead (number 10), Babylon (number 11), Huntington (number 14), and Freeport (number 19). For this scholarship contest, students simply need to create a short video that illustrates one

or more of the Vehicle and Traffic Laws for Pedestrian Enforcement. The intent of the competition is to encourage more widespread understanding about various pedestrian/ traffic safety laws. Babies are especially vulnerable to sun damage due to their relative lack of melanin, the skin pigment that provides some sun protection, so protecting them from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation is imperative. “All of the sun damage we receive as children adds up and greatly increases skin cancer risk later in life,” says Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “That’s why it’s so important that parents make sun protection for infants and toddlers a priority and eventually teach children these habits that will benefit them for many years to come.” The Skin Cancer Foundation wants parents and caregivers to know that skin cancer is highly preventable and offers the following tips to help keep young children sun-safe for the rest of the summer and all year long: Seek Shade. Avoid direct sun exposure during peak sun hours, between 10 AM and 4 PM, and use an umbrella while on the beach. On walks, keep to the shady side of the street and use a sun shield on your stroller. Cover Up. Keep your baby covered up with a brimmed hat and lightweight clothing that fully covers the arms and legs. For added protection, look for special clothing marked with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 30 or more. Be Careful in the Car. While glass screens out most UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, UVA rays can penetrate windows. Like UVB rays, UVA rays damage DNA and can lead to skin cancer. By law, front windshields are treated to filter out most UVA, but side and rear windows generally aren’t. Consider buying a UV shield, which you can hang over any window that allows sunlight to reach

Hundreds of walkers, from brain aneurysm survivors to their families and supporters, are expected to attend Long Island’s 11th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 21. The fun-filled event, which includes a fourmile run and two-mile walk, is hosted by the Brain Aneurysm Center at Northwell Health’s Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF). Proceeds will benefit both organizations, raising funds to support essential research. “Thanks to hundreds of participants, we have raised $700,000 since the walk’s inception and it continues to grow steadily each year,” said David Chalif, MD, director of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “It is a time for brain aneurysm survivors and their families to celebrate life and also a time to remember those who have lost a loved one to a brain aneurysm.” At this year’s walk, one of the guest speakers will

Sun Protection Tips Continued From 11 the child’s car seat. Another option is to install professional UV-blocking window film. Start Sunscreen at 6 Months. Since infants’ skin is so sensitive, it’s best to keep them out of the sun completely. Beginning at 6 months of age, you can introduce sunscreen use. Choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Look at active ingredients; zinc
oxide and titanium dioxide are good choices, because these inorganic filters are less apt to cause a skin reaction. You may want to test sunscreen on the inside of your baby’s wrist. If the child has a little irritation, try another sunscreen. Use Sunscreen As Directed. Use sunscreen on all exposed areas not covered by clothing, such as the back of the hands, face, ears and neck. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going
out and reapply it every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating. Toddlers rarely stand still, so you may need to get creative with your sunscreen application routine. Sunscreen sticks work well for the face and hands. Sprays are another good option. Make sure to apply the sunscreen evenly and liberally, then rub in. For the face, spray into your hands, then apply to your child’s face.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration is open for the 34rd Annual Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 15th and held at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach, in Oyster Bay. “This all-day sporting event is open to anglers of all ages but space is limited, so sign up quickly,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This annual event that is beloved by residents all across the Town features
hours of fun fishing followed by a tailgate party with refreshments, raffles and awards. Anyone who registers prior to September 10th will receive a tournament T-shirt and be automatically entered in a special raffle. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently joined the family, friends and fellow members of Boy Scout Troop 708 in Huntington to honor Henry A. Rivas of Melville on earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, the highest-recognized achievement bestowed by the Boy Scouts of America to its members. The Court of Honor for Mr. Rivas was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in
Plainview on August 3, where he received many accolades for his distinction, including a Proclamation from Legislator Donnelly. For his Eagle Scout project, Mr. Rivas constructed rabbit hutches for the Brookhaven Ecology Site, Park and Nature Preserve. Thousands Turnout For 22nd Annual Pet-A-Palooza On August 17th & 18th Little Shelter of Huntington held its 22nd annual Pet-A-Palooza. Families waited outside the rescue for hours before the event in hopes of being the first to adopt one of the puppies, kittens, dogs and cats available that weekend. Many of the animals available had been saved from desperate situations including emergency rescue from inundated kill shelter and hoarding situations. For two days, people flocked to the rescue to adopt the adorable animals and participate in the various events being held throughout the weekend. Onlookers cheered during the doggie parade, a popular event which puts the spotlight on some of
the adult and senior dogs, while others enjoyed BBQ and Ice Cream. On Sunday, Little Shelter alumni flooded the grounds for the popular Blessing Of The Animals. The biggest attraction besides adoptions was Little Shelter’s famous Chinese Auction, which boasted over 300 fabulous prizes that attendees could purchase tickets to try and win. The Chinese Auction helps raise much needed funds that help cover the continued medical care cost of the rescues while also aiding rescue relief efforts Little Shelter conducts throughout the year. “This is such a crucial event for Little Shelter to continue helping dogs and cats in need. Not only do
we see our animals go to great homes, but it allows us to pull even more from local town shelters and other rescue partners to really maximize our rescue efforts. The donations and adoptions from this weekend not only help the animals leaving here, but also the ones that take their place,” commented Little Shelter Executive Director David Ceely. With an estimated 3,000 visitors and over sixty animals adopted at this year’s Pet-A-Palooza, this year’s event was a huge success in aiding Little Shelter’s continued battle against homeless pets on Long Island.
