The Town of Huntington Fire Chief’s Council recently presented their annual Scholarship Awards to students affiliated with the town fire and rescue services. Council President Scott Waryold of Greenlawn presented the scholarships to Dylan Angevine of Huntington, Nicole Ciafardini of Greenlawn, Megan Waring of Centerport, Chief Scott Waryold, Daniel Paccione of Commack, David Lindley of Northport, Joseph Nardelli of Huntington Manor, and Brianna Simpson of Centerport. The seven recipients were selected randomly from over 100 applicants. Dylan is the son of Huntington Community First Aid Squad member Gina Angevine, and is attending the John Jay College of Criminal Justice where he is majoring in Police studies. Nicole is the daughter
of Greenlawn firefighter Richard Ciafardini, and is attending Temple University and is studying Nursing. Megan is the daughter of Centerport firefighter Bruce Waring, and is attending the University of Rochester where she is a Business major. Daniel is the son of Commack FD Chief Peter Paccione, and is attending SUNY Farmingdale and majoring in Sports Management. David, a former Northport Junior and son of firefighter David Lindley, is attending Virginia Tech where he is studying Construction Engineering and Management. Joseph is a Junior in the Huntington Manor Explorers, and is studying Fire Science at Nassau Community College. Brianna is a former Centerport Junior and daughter of Centerport FD
Ex-Chief Robert Simpson. She is attending Suffolk Community College and majoring in Occupational Therapy. The seven $500 scholarships are awarded annually in the memory of Dix Hills Chief Terry Farrell and Huntington Manor Chief Peter Nelson, both FDNY Rescue Company 4 firefighters who were killed in the line of duty on 9/11; Huntington Manor Fire Chaplain Richard Holst and Dix Hills Firefighter Walter Hessling who both died in the line of duty in 2009; Huntington Manor Ex-Chief and Commissioner Joe Lynch, Town of Huntington Supervisor’s representative Billie Pastore, and Eaton’s Neck Assistant Chief Kevin Brandon who passed away last year. About a week ago, my father and I were relaxing on the beach in front of my house. What started out as a seemingly normal day abruptly shifted into a frantic morning. The plot twist occurred when all of a sudden a dying dolphin washed up onto the beach. From a distance, it looked like a child’s inflatable toy. Its tail stuck up at a weird angle. As we moved closer, we saw what resembled a huge bite mark on its back. Flocks of people were surrounding the mammal and obstructing our view. As one of the locals, I was there before the police. This meant that I got to see it up close. The seemingly brutal bite mark on its back was simply two gashes where a boat’s propellor had
struck. By this point, it had been on land for close to ten minutes and it was not moving. Lifeguards sprinted over and we tried to drag it into the water, but it did not budge. When the police finally arrived, they came in great numbers. Not much happens on Fire Island, so something this unique surely attracted attention. This one big, angry policeman proceeded to tie a rope to the back of his decked-out Suburban, and to the tail of the now deceased animal. He put it in drive and gunned it, but got stuck in the sand. Then, a police boat showed up. It really couldn’t help at all due to the dolphin being on land! A second police cruiser came and dragged the first out of the sand. They
pulled the dolphin down the beach about ¼ mile and just left it to bake in the sun. The whole ride, it was bouncing along the sand. I’m sure they came back for it, because a few hours later, it was gone. It was a truly inhumane way to treat an animal. Even a dead fish shouldn’t be treated the way that this dolphin was treated. They showed no respect for the animal. It is a shame that this is the way the animal had to go. It was exciting for the beach goers, but also a saddening moment for many of the Fire Island locals who enjoy watching the dolphins go by in the water every once in a while. For us, it is simply one less beautiful creature that continues to play off the shore of our little island.

Summer’s Sunset By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, Labor Day is upon us. The muchmaligned “Last Weekend Of Summer,” even though summer won’t, in actuality, end for nearly another month. But in a society dictated by the school calendar, apparently we must all take our cues from those less-than-thrilled students returning to the classroom and collectively mourn over those last golden beach days, that final holiday BBQ… and let’s not forget to whisk away any remaining traces of white clothing, the ultimate “fall” faux pas. (If only it was actually fall!) It’s funny, as much as we all anticipate summer each
year, I would be willing to bet that most of us did not do half of what we planned to over these last three months. Head to the beach every weekend? Doubtful. Plan BBQs and boat trips and day trips to Montauk and Fire Island? Maybe one, here and there. A few stolen moments is all we ever seem to get between work and daily responsibilities and prior commitments – even the children, supposedly the ones with all the free time these days, seem to be stretched thin with all their extracurricular activities, youth sports and play dates. When is there time for fun? But maybe the key to fun is to remain busy, to fill our days with enough activities
and people to make the time fly, to enjoy while being super-productive… and then to share every moment on Facebook and Instagram of course! (Because really, if it’s not posted on some sort of social media outlet, did it really happen??) Seems to work for most people – in this generation anyway. And with that, we bid adieu to the sun and surf, to long hours of daylight, to warm summer nights and all the excitement that comes with living on Long Island at this time of year. But don’t worry – the calendar says we still have a little time left to savor those last golden days. Be sure to make them count.

Stony Brook University cut the ribbon of Frey Hall, commemorating the opening of the first building dedicated solely to classroom space on the Long Island campus. Stony Brook President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. was joined by Dr. Robert Frey and his wife Kathryn, academic leadership, faculty and staff from across the University, and elected officials including Sen. John Flanagan and Assemblyman Steve Englebright, to celebrate the $31M, 95,000 square-foot renovation project that began in March 2011. The project, designed by architectural firm EwingCole to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver Certification, converted one of the oldest buildings on the campus known as “Old Chemistry” (construction for which began in 1962) into a modern new teaching facility with 1,971 seats (including three new 250 seat lecture halls), 27 new classrooms and creative new teaching space, which, combined, will host nearly 240 courses this fall. Named to honor Dr. Robert Frey and the Frey Family Foundation in grateful recognition of their 35-year commitment to Stony Brook University, the new classroom building incorporates several signature teaching and learning with technology (TLT) features, including an “Active Learning Center” and a “Testing Center.” The Active Learning Center is a 180-seat classroom space organized around tables of six in which an instructor and teaching assistants lead the students through cooperative learning, problembased learning and team- problem solving exercises in a media intense environment. The Testing Center is a relatively new concept in higher education, slated to

A former Town supervisor was honored, a plaque marking completion of the major ice rink expansion was dedicated and more than 2,000 residents enjoyed a day of affordable fun as the Town of Huntington turned back the clock on prices August 17th to celebrate the 50th anniversary of purchasing the land that became Dix Hills Park. More than 1,000 residents took advantage of 50-cent admission to use the Town pool; 413 people joined the open skating sessions at the ice rink, where admission and skate rental were both 50 cents, and 110 people lined up to play a round of golf at the nine-hole executive course for $2. Others just came to visit the vendor booths, play the free carnival games, frolic on the inflated bouncy houses or ride a pony. Concessionaire D&J Refreshment reported selling 520 hamburgers, 440 hot dogs and more than 1,000 orders of French fries, each of which cost $1. The highlight of the day was a brief program in front of the Town Pool, at which Supervisor Petrone recounted Dix Hills Park’s history before introducing former Supervisor Robert Flynn, “The Father of Dix Hills Park.” “Today, we take very seriously our commitment to open space preservation and to the parks facilities and programs that help define Huntington’s quality of life,” Supervisor Petrone said. “In many ways, we have continued the tradition established a half a century ago by then-Supervisor Bob Flynn…Bob had a vision for recreation programs and park facilities throughout
the whole Town. He helped convince voters to approve a bond issue – the first open space bond issue in Town history - to purchase 700 acres throughout the Town for parks. That began the extensive park program that the Town is so proud of.” The history of Dix Hills Park began in January 1963, when the Town purchased 144 acres of the Havemeyer Estate for $510,000. In March of that year, the Town
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joins with Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency Executive Director Anthony Manetta in announcing an innovative new jobs website that bridges the gap between job seekers with prospective employers in Suffolk County. The site, www.jobs.suffolkida.org, has an initial listing of over 115 jobs and over 20 companies participating. “This is a groundbreaking initiative that the IDA is launching. This helps fuel Suffolk’s innovation and manufacturing economy,” states County Executive Steven Bellone. Graduating college students are especially urged to visit the site for full-time employment opportunities. “Providing this tool for our younger workers is critical to having them continue to call Suffolk County home and reverse the trends of years past.” The website, www.jobs.suffolkida.org, is a sleek, simple to use, free interface where companies post job openings and residents can apply for jobs. This site is specifically tailored to the STEMM fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The initiative adds an “M” on the traditional STEM acronym to work with local manufactures on their hiring needs. The program will be sustainable long term due to a change in the IDA’s policy. Companies who receive agency benefits are now required to post jobs online. Currently, companies are to list the jobs they create with the NYS Department of Labor; however now County residents will have more efficient and direct access to jobs created by companies who receive IDA incentives. “This initiative provides a unique opportunity in a highly focused industry specific environment to mutually benefit our companies and workforce,” says Anthony Manetta, CEO/ Executive Director of the Suffolk County
IDA. “Now with this new posting requirement, IDA companies will be more engaged in recruiting locally to fill jobs they create for receiving tax incentives.” Yusong Yin, CEO of Photonics Industries says regarding the new initiative, “The IDA is providing a dedicated site geared toward applicants that I want to reach. This is a great program, I’m proud to be part of it.” Potential employers like Mr. Yin have always looked locally for talent. The IDA’s new website is creating a medium by which those employers can easily find talented local applicants. At the site’s launch the company has 10 jobs posted including positions such as “Laser Engineer,” “Senior Electronics Engineer” and “Machinist.” Kevin Law, President & CEO of the Long Island Association, says, “The Suffolk IDA continues to lead the way with innovative programs. Our employers now have an effective tool to recruit a highly qualified local workforce.” Dr. Shaun McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College, says, “The Suffolk County Community College has career development programs that provide students with the skill set for a variety of jobs, including manufacturing. This initiative by the IDA will help create additional opportunities for our students.” Stony Brook University Vice President for Economic Development Yacov Shamash endorsed the initiative, saying, “This innovative approach to public-private collaboration will benefit both the companies that need STEMM-skilled talent, and the recent and not-so-recent graduates from Stony Brook and other campuses in the region who have these skills. And that will be a win for

It is our pleasure as a Town Board to keep these facilities in the great condition that they are.” Added Councilman Mark Mayoka, “To hear the decision-making process and why it came to be…it worked out fantastic. This will be enjoyed by today’s kids and future generations to come.” Festivities earlier in the day included the ceremonial first drive at the golf course and the dedication of the plaque commemorating the 2010 completion of the addition that doubled the size of the ice rink by adding a second sheet of ice, new locker rooms and other amenities. Joining Supervisor Petrone and Council Members Cuthbertson, Berland and Mayoka were Lou DeLuca, president of the Dix Hill Mites hockey club and Ken Titarian of Half Hollow Hills Hockey.

This jobs effort at the IDA will give the residents of Suffolk County and the businesses a new job development tool,” explains Commissioner of Labor Samuel Chu. Suffolk County Deputy Executive and Commissioner of Economic Development & Planning Joanne Minieri states, “Creating a pro-business and pro-workforce website focused on STEMM jobs brings a unfounded level of government support.” The IDA has also partnered with WorkMarket, an IDA Boost Company, to link to the company’s freelance work opportunities job feed. Long Island based companies who are not Suffolk County IDA clients are encouraged to join the site. There are two requirements for a company’s participation: they have to be based in Suffolk County, and their company must be in a STEMM industry or the perspective job is STEMM related. Resource partners of the initiative include Stony Brook University, Suffolk County Community College, Long Island Association, Suffolk County Department of Labor, Long Island Forum for Technology (LIFT) and LISTnet. A sampling of companies participating are Canon USA, LNK International, Contract Pharmacal, Marchon, D’Addario, A&Z Pharmaceuticals, Spellman High Voltage, Sartorius and KLD Labs.

Cadet Honored
At the August 13th Town Board meeting, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone honored Commack High School senior Nicholas R. Diers for his accomplishments as part of the Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. Nicholas, who is a Cadet 2nd Lieutenant, was recognized for receiving the CAP’s General Billy Mitchell Award, which was also presented by Col. Glenn Mackey of the CAP’s Long Island-based Leroy R. Grumman Squadron.
A member of the CAP since June 2010, Nicholas has participated in various community service projects, including helping move gifts to a church for Christmas after Hurricane Sandy. He rose up through the ranks of the cadet corps, from First Sergeant to Cadet Commander and to Second Lieutenant. He has a keen interest in rocketry, and as he progressed through the program, he helped the aerospace officer with rocketry by bringing in a water rocket launcher he
New Appointment
Last month, the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously approved a resolution, sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D., appointing long-time Huntington resident Patricia Bishop-Kelly to the Suffolk County Board of Health. A veteran member of the Department of Health Services, the Division of Preventative Medicine, and the Office of Health Education, Mrs. Kelly was appointed to the Board of Health to fill a vacancy left by Dr. David Parkinson. “Suffolk County is very fortunate to have Pat Bishop-Kelly serving on the Board of Health with us,” said Legislator Spencer, who, as Chair of the Legislature’s Health Committee, also serves on the Board. “Her experience in the field of public health and preventative education
will, without a doubt, have a positive influence on the Board’s efforts to make our communities safer and healthier. The fact that she is a Huntington resident will ensure that there will be a local on the Board to advocate for the issues that directly affect the Huntington community.” A graduate of Hofstra University, Mrs. Kelly has spent her career as a public servant and health advocate, working many years at the Nassau County Department of Social Services and serving as Director of Advocacy for the American Cancer Society’s Long Island Division before joining Suffolk County. “It is truly an honor and privilege to continue to work on behalf of public health for Suffolk County!” said Mrs. Kelly. “I look forward to working alongside Legislator
Spencer and Dr. Tomarken, and my colleagues on the Board, to uphold Suffolk’s tradition of being in the forefront of safeguarding our public health standards.” During her tenure as the Director of Public Information and Education in the Office of Health Education, Mrs. Kelly worked tirelessly to educate the public, as well as our children, about a wide variety of health issues. One of her main goals was to create a better public understanding, especially among young people, of the dangers associated with tobacco use. Nationwide restrictions on cigarette and tobacco use can be attributed to Mrs. Kelly’s efforts on Long Island, where some of those restrictions were first enacted years ago.

The Dix Hills Fire Department recently honored Ex-Chief and past Commissioner Fred Reithel for his 50 years of outstanding and dedicated volunteer service to the department and community. At the August Department meeting, Reithel was recognized with Proclamations and Citations from Governor Andrew Cuomo, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Assemblyman Andrew Raia, Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, Suffolk County Fire Chief’s Council, NY
State Association of Fire Chiefs and the Fireman’s Association of NY State. Reithel served in the United States Navy where he built PT boats, then worked for Sperry where he produced the navigation system for submarines. He later bought land on Caledonia Road in 1955, where he built his own house. Fred’s unique mechanical abilities quickly became an asset around the firehouse. “We had nothing in those days, but made do,” Reithel remarked. Fred quickly advanced through the officers
ranks, becoming Chief of the Department from 1974 to 1975. At 92-years of age, Fred is still an active member of the Fire Police. The department and Dix Hills community has grown and developed much in the last 50 years, and Fred has seen it change from a predominantly rural and farm community to a mainly residential area with several heavily traveled major highways running through the district. Although times have changed, the department has progressed due to the dedication of its members like Fred Reithel.

On Saturday, September 14th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Strong Island Derby Revolution, a Suffolkbased all-female roller derby team, is inviting those interested in joining this unique American sport to participate in a free bootcamp, which will focus on basic skills, hitting and blocking drills, as well as proper skating form. The bootcamp, which will be held at World Gym, located at 384 Mark Tree Rd. in East Setauket, will also give prospective new members a chance to meet league members and find out more about the sport. Requirements for a
new skater include being at least 21 years of age or older and coming to the event with a pair of quad skates, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and helmet. There is also a limited supply of loaner equipment available on a first come first serve basis. Strong Island Derby Revolution formed in the spring of 2011 and currently boasts almost 50 league members, including skaters, referees, non-skating officials and coaches. In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth in roller derby around the
world. The sport’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December of 2011. All teams are DIY organizations with the skaters not only training hard on the track but also running the business side, doing everything from securing venues to selling tickets and designing merchandise. The next home bout for Strong Island Derby Revolution is on Saturday, September 28th at 8 p.m. at World Gym in East Setauket. Grant Received The Early Years Institute (EYI) has received a $20,000 grant from the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund at Long Island Community Foundation to address educational inequities for young children. Based on research, when underserved children are not given equal opportunities to learn and grow, they start behind their peers in Kindergarten and they often stay behind. Some of the root causes of the inequities stem from a lack of literacy and language access, representation in the decision-making process and affordable housing. This grant will enable EYI to continue its work in Westbury by facilitating
systemic social change that engages the whole community in supporting children so they succeed in school. EYI will continue to utilize the data from the Early Development Instrument (EDI) – a school readiness Kindergarten assessment tool - to host Parent Cafés that elicit the voices of parents, share data and parent concerns with government, business and civic leaders, and to create a more welcoming and efficient process of registering and orienting families to Kindergarten. “EYI’s goals and outcomes for this project are aligned with Unitarian Universalist
principles of justice, equity and compassion in human relations and the use of the democratic process,” said Dr. Dana E. Friedman, president of The Early Years Institute. The Early Years Institute, a regional non-profit organization based in Plainview, NY, serves as a catalyst for community partnerships and innovations to ensure all young children have the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. EYI is viewed as a trusted source of information and a thought leader on early childhood education and school readiness.
