New York Mets players Zack Wheeler and Travis d’Arnaud brightened the day for some patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center this week, posing for pictures and handing out gifts and autographs.
The players hung out with the kids in the afternoon, playing some video games and answering questions. They also found the time to make the rounds, stopping by bedsides to spread some
cheer. Mr. Met also joined the tour and was a big hit with the children, who peppered him with questions about everything from his four-fingered hand to the whereabouts of the missing Mrs. Met.

Seeking Volunteers Family and Children’s Association is seeking volunteers for its longstanding Ombudservice Program, part of a statewide network of certified volunteers who visit nursing homes, adult homes, and assisted living facilities in Nassau County. Ombudspersons serve as advocates for residents and their families.
If you are looking for a meaningful way to improve the quality of life for our frail, sick and elderly neighbors who currently reside in long-term care facilities, this program is for you. Of particular interest to the NSWCA were discussions regarding the improvement of forecasting and outreach, including partnerships with national, state and local emergency operation centers. “Long Island is vulnerable to storms because of its geography,” said Commissioner Niznik. “No one knows what Mother Nature will bring. The seminar information indicated that the hurricane prediction for 2014 is anywhere from eight to thirteen named storms. The relative severity of the respective storms is unknown.” “NOAA will soon have a
new map on their website that will show predicted storm surge and water levels from the ground up,” Commissioner Bader stated. “This will help us to prepare residents living in vulnerable areas.” NSWCA President Howard Abbondondelo, Commissioner from Albertson Water District added, “As elected Commissioners, it is incumbent upon us to continually safeguard our constituents and the water delivery systems that enable them to go about their daily lives. Not So Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The autumn season is upon us. Well, at least in terms of retail, it is. As far as I’m concerned, there is still nearly one entire month of potential beach weather before us. No matter how many pairs of cute boots I see in stores, or autumn-scented candles and pumpkin-flavored everything, I remain in denial. Not yet. Maybe in a week or two…or three. What’s the big rush? For a region that happens to be blessed with all four seasons, we sure don’t take too much time to appreciate them.
We rush everything, much like our days, our weeks, our lives…and for what? To start complaining about the chilly weather and the inevitable snowstorms looming? As long as I can get away with wearing flip-flops, and running outside with no jacket on, you can bet I will. Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season. That said, the one regret I have about summer

Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. “It’s meant to give speech-language pathologists the tools they need to deal with stuttering in this age group, but it also offers good ideas for parents and teachers,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of five nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. “We focus on demonstrating a variety of therapy strategies that are appropriate in working with children who stutter,” adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speech-language pathologists Barry Guitar, Ph.D., of the University of Vermont, Hugo H. Gregory, Ph.D., and June Campbell, M.A., of Northwestern University, and Patricia Zebrowski, P.D., of the University of Iowa. These five experts answer questions about stuttering, refute myths and misconceptions, and present examples of therapy sessions showing how stuttering can be reduced. On August 3rd, in Central Park, the New York City Triathlon saw New York’s finest athletes swim, run and cycle to glory through New York City. This year, the roster included four of our city’s most dedicated athletes who made up Team LICADD. Together they raised over $11,000.00 for the council’s lifesaving work here on Long Island. Ed Kerner, Lee Goddard, Jeffrey Crane and Mary Alice O’Connor, in her first ever NYC Triathlon, participated in this year’s event for LICADD and brought spirit and heart into this annual New York tradition for Team LICADD. Golf Outing Honorees Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center honored Sally Rose and Charlene Lehmann at the Tournament of Tournaments Golf Outing on August 14th at Island Hills Golf Club in Sayville. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one out of every three people over the age of 65 fall each year, and many die as a result of injuries from a fall. The Gurwin Jewish ~ Fay J. Lindner Residences, Gurwin’s Assisted Living community (50 Hauppauge Road, Commack), will be hosting “Stepping On,” a sevenweek program featuring Nelida Zoeller, Falls Prevention Coordinator for the Suffolk County
Department of Health, to help to older adults who are at risk for falling. The “Stepping On” program empowers older adults to carry out behaviors that reduce the risk of falls, improve self management and increase quality of life. Through the program, older adults develop specific knowledge and skills to prevent falls in community settings. Older adults should consider attending if they a) are at risk of falling; b) have a
Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and his Town Board colleagues announce that the Town will again impose measures aimed at ensuring that boaters wanting to attend the Huntington Lighthouse’s annual Music Fest August 30 can enjoy the event and leave safely. The Town will again impose a 5 mph speed limit within half a mile of the Lighthouse and establish a safety zone around the Lighthouse to keep vessels clear of the dock and rocks and to protect swimmers in the vicinity of the Lighthouse. The speed limit will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Huntington Town harbormaster, working with the Suffolk County Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Lloyd Harbor Village harbormaster, will step up patrols in the area of the festival, which last year attracted an estimated 1,200 boats and could attract an estimated 1,400 this year. The Town will have rapid rescue recovery units available, if necessary, and work in coordination with local fire departments on rescues. As has been done in the past, law enforcement boats will be strategically located throughout the area to help ensure an orderly dispersal after the event and to optimize the response time for boats in need of assistance. Among the agencies that
have committed resources to assist in enforcement and rescue operations are the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Eatons Neck, the Suffolk County and Northport Village Police Departments, the Lloyd Harbor Village harbormaster and the Centerport, Cold Spring Harbor, Halesite, Huntington and Northport Fire Departments and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. This is the third consecutive year the Town has set the reduced speed limit for the area around the Lighthouse during the Music Fest, a move that was originally prompted by a tragedy in Oyster Bay on July 4th, 2012, that took the lives of three children who drowned when the boat in which they were watching a fireworks display capsized. After that tragedy, Huntington enacted legislation authorizing the Harbormaster’s Office to establish 5 mph zones during aquatic events and increased boating safety classes and other boating safety measures. Most recently, the Town placed two buoys carrying the warning, “Slow No Wake” in the area around the lighthouse. “Whether it is Fourth of July fireworks or Labor Day Weekend music festivals, the Town takes boating safety very seriously, and our experience is that these enhanced measures help send the message that we expect boaters to act responsibly, for their own sake and others’,”

On August 15th, Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr., Councilman Kevin Lavalle and Mayor of Lake Grove Robert Scottaline joined forces to host the First Annual Lake Grove Blood Drive held at the Community Center located at 980 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Grove. This new event was the latest stop to Legislator Kennedy’s 2014 “Out For Blood” Blood Drive Tour which has already made stops in Smithtown, Centereach, Commack and Hauppauge. As always registered professionals from New York Blood Center were on site diligently collecting blood
donations. New York Blood Center was established in 1964 and is one of the largest communitybased, not for profit blood collection and distribution organizations in the United States. This inaugural event was an incredible success as a total of 30 units or pints of blood was collected from 20 whole blood donors and 5 donors via the ALYX Component Collection System. “The initial Lake Grove Blood Drive proved a major success and shows at lot of promise for future blood drives in the Lake Grove community,” said Legislator Kennedy.

building in East Northport. The YDA is a non-profit community and youth agency serving youths and their families in three local school districts. Leading a team of volunteers, Andrew planned the renovations which included designing and constructing oak radiator covers that were secured to the walls, insulating water pipes, and painting several public rooms. Legislator Trotta was impressed with Andrew’s passion for the youth in the area and stated, “Your hard work has paid off and now you have attained the highest rank of Eagle Scout. This project was a great way to give back to our residents and to provide our youth with a bright and updated center for their programs, as well as demonstrate your leadership and organizational skills.” Legislator Trotta urged both scouts to keep up the good work and to stay involved with our great community.
