uffolk County Legislator Steve Stern recently celebrated the opening of the “Extreme STEAM” science building at Park Shore Country Day Camp and PreSchool in Dix Hills. The building is home to the camp’s year-round Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) program, in which campers and students learn everything from robots and coding to making movies and even neurosurgery.

Buddy the Birthday Boy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m baaaaack! The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again. From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing. Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes. So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they

have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless. My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked. But, alas, the rogue flake was snatched from my waiting jaws. What a tease. That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much

singing and celebrating in honor of me and all my finned glory. And well it should have been. I am, after all, the most lively addition to that drab little apartment, if I do say so myself. I even complement the throw pillows and accents. I am, to put it quite simply, the finest accessory in the place. I suppose I should also note that my milestone was shared by the human – something about turning 33 I think. That seems like an awfully big number. Maybe that’s why she’s so tall. Such are some of the thoughts I ponder as I swim my daily 437 laps around the bowl… ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Crisis Counselor Training Everyone has moments when the support and understanding of others seem hard to find, and it is for such moments that RESPONSE of Suffolk County, Inc. was born. RESPONSE of Suffolk County is a nationally accredited, non-profit agency that provides a confidential and anonymous hotline for anyone who needs to talk. RESPONSE is seeking volunteer crisis counselors and will offer a free training program to those interested in becoming the caring voice on the other end of the line. Part one of the training program will be held on Saturday, September 26th and Sunday, September 27th, and continues on Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday October 4th. Sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and trainees must attend all four sessions. Training will take place on the campus of Stony Brook University. No

experience is necessary, only a sincere willingness to learn and grow, and the ability to make a sixmonth commitment of four hours a week is required. Response provides two types of telephone assistance lines and both are heavily dependent on volunteer talent. The crisis intervention hotline takes over 18,000 calls each year about a wide range of subjects – substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, family conflict, grief, suicidal thoughts among many others. The support line provides over 4,000 telephone “visits” yearly to individuals who are homebound or have limited social support due to a physical disability or mental illness. Training for both the hotline and support line counselors includes lecture, roleplaying exercises, and private and group supervision. College credit is available and bilingual volunteers are especially

High School Meet & Greet In preparation of the 2015-2016 school year, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School hosted a meet and greet for incoming Glenn seniors to become acquainted with the school’s newly appointed guidance counselors Carolyn Pollina and Adrienne Nasser. Both of the school’s most recent appointees bring to their roles a wealth of knowledge and experience in school counseling. Nasser began her education at Baruch College where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. In 2003, she obtained her Master of Science in education counseling from Fordham University and soon after began working as a career counselor at Kingsborough Community College. As a

supplement to her degrees, Nasser obtained additional coursework credit from the counseling program at Manhattan College and is currently in the school building leadership program at CUNY Queens College. Pollina received a Bachelor of Science in child and family studies from SUNY Oneonta and a Master of Science in school counseling from Mercy College. In the field of counseling, Pollina has worked with a wide range of students, with her most previous experience as a high school guidance counselor at Carmel High School where she served more than 230 students in grades 10 through 12. In addition, Pollina has obtained several

licenses and certifications including the New York State counseling permanent certification. During the meet and greet, Glenn seniors and their parents had the opportunity to share some of the student’s ambitions upon gradating in June. Additionally, students were asked to fill out a brag sheet that includes the student’s personal goals, volunteer experiences and extracurricular activities. “We thought it would be a good opportunity for students to come in and meet us as well as for us to meet the students,” said Pollina. “We hope they feel comfortable working with us as they begin their senior year of high school.”

Pet-A-Palooza On Saturday, August 15th and Sunday, August 16th, Little Shelter celebrated its 18th annual Pet A Palooza. Both old and new friends of Little Shelter took part in the festivities and many brought their adopted Little Shelter pets along! The weekend included

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE - Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern joined the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless’ annual “Backpack Pirates” school supply collection drive and, thanks to the generous response of members of our community and the assistance of Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts in Huntington, was able to collect supplies that will enable many of the neediest students in our community to start the new school year off with the tools they need to succeed.

New Gallery Opens Master Jung Hwa Lee, the founder of the Open Path Art Gallery on Main St. did not imagine her life as an artist. The 43 year-old owner of the Body and Brain Institute has dedicated her life to teaching yoga, meditation and other healing practices to her students. But eight months ago when her storefront needed a new look, she was inspired by an ancient Korean art exhibit in Philadelphia. “The paintings there brought tears to my eyes,” Master Lee said. And though she had never been more than a doodler, she decided she had nothing to lose by painting a serene mural to express her lifelong belief in the power of natural beauty. She never imagined it would open her creative senses

and inspire her to paint on canvas. Today she is proud to announce the opening of her own gallery, which showcases the exquisite artwork of herself and coowner Laurie Fitrakis. On display are over onehundred original pieces that include still life, abstract and portraits. Master Lee and Ms. Fitrakis hope that new and old collectors alike will appreciate their life affirming approach to their art. “We bring light, energy and hope to our work,” Master Lee added. “The surprise to me was how much joy comes from capturing the essence of what we see and feel every day. Unlike dance, music and even yoga, painting is an outlet that fits into a finite space and can be

enjoyed forever.” “Our goal is to offer buyers a celebration of life and a positive spirit,” said Ms. Fitrakis. The Suffolk County Legislature’s inaugural summer Page Program concluded August 7th with a graduation ceremony held in the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium of the W.H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge. Fifteen high school and college students completed the internship program. “I am honored to congratulate these outstanding young people as they graduate from our Page Program,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “These students prove that millennials are anything but disengaged from public life. I’m impressed by both their enthusiasm

and professionalism, and I thank my fellow legislators for giving our Pages a substantive experience this summer.” During the twomonth program, Pages drafted and debated mock legislation, staged mock press conferences and attended workshops on topics ranging from time management to cultural intelligence. Additionally, they broke into caucuses and elected a Presiding Officer and Deputy Presiding Officer. Pages were also assigned to legislative offices throughout the county, where they assisted staff with day-to-day operations, including constituent service. “I’ve loved every minute

of the program and every person I’ve met along the way,” said Kristin Peragine of Baiting Hollow, who was assigned to the office of Clerk of the Legislature Tim Laube. “I never felt defeated or as though I couldn’t understand what was going on during a meeting. There was always a resource for me to rely on to help me further understand what was happening on a day-to-day basis at the Legislature.” While the Suffolk County Legislature will continue to welcome interns this fall, the Page Program will only be offered in the summer. In June of 2004, a woman named Madeline Porter, a retired English teacher, first opened the St. Thomas of Canterbury Bookstore in Smithtown. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at

some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip

fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation

(NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many

This cost can be overwhelming to families whose budgets are already strained by rent, health care costs, and utilities. Last year, Family Service League provided over 2,000

children with backpacks filled with the items they needed for a successful start to the school year.
