The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $2,500 grant from PSEG for the Student Assistance Program (SAP). Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of LICADD’s SAP designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. The TGFD prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. Teen Intervene, a psychoeducation intervention model, addresses teens experiencing mild to moderate problems associated with alcohol or other drug use.

Heroin arrests by the DEA have surged in recent years. Calls to LICADD’s hotlines and requests for services mirror these increasing trends and beyond the sheer rise in numbers of young people and

Camels have a reputation of being ill-tempered, moody creatures that spit and kick, but they are actually very patient and intelligent. With a max height of more than six feet
and weight of over 1,500 pounds, these gentle giants can live to be as old as 40. Contrary to popular belief, camels do not store water in their humps, which are actually a mound of fatty tissue from which the animal draws energy when food is difficult to find. They do, however, also require little water if their regular diet contains good, moisture-rich plants and can withstand severe dehydration as their unique metabolism enables them to store the water in their bloodstream. The multi-tiered social media contested started with a call for the zoo’s Facebook friends to submit name recommendations direct on a post. After

The two calves, albeit curious and a little shy, certainly enjoy each other’s company. The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo resident camels, Sandy and Sahara, have been making themselves right at home since their arrival in May. In addition to the two adult female dromedary camels, the zoo also became the proud host to a new female dromedary calf. In honor of this new resident, Long Island Game Farm

SUFFOLK COP HONORED - The East Northport Fire Department recently recognized Suffolk County Police Officer Christine Blauvelt for her dedicated service upon her retirement. Officer Blauvelt was an asset to the department and community for over 20 years proudly serving in the 206 sector car that patrols the East Northport area. The department presented Blauvelt with a plaque for her dedicated service and her valued friendship to the officers and members of the East Northport Fire Department. The cement walkway curves to create a more pleasing design than more conventional walks that are at 90- degree angles. “This was a long time coming,” Supervisor
Petrone told the residents – adults and children waiting patiently to use the new equipment. Speaking to the adults, he said, “Thank you for your support and cooperation in making this happen, and most important, for your patience. Talking to the children, he said, “May you use it well, may you enjoy it, and most important, may you be safe.” Joining Supervisor Petrone at the opening were Town Maritime Services Director Edward Carr, Parks and Recreation Director Don McKay and AlexMcKay, vice chair of the Town’s Environmental Open Space and Parks Improvement Committee.

National Anthem Paris Yates, a 2013 graduate of Smithtown High School East, is studying song writing and studio composition at SUNY Purchase. She has appeared in commercials and on Disney Channel’s “iCarly” and in “Conan” on TBS. In 2015, she released her first an album, titled “Open Book.”
Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson joined with campers attending the Town’s Project Play Camp in thanking the Suffolk County Police Department’s Hispanic Society for funding a day of special activities, including a bounce house and a disc jockey, on the last day of camp August 12th. Each year for the past few
years, the Hispanic Society had donated money to help fund a field trip for the campers to a Farmingdale video arcade emporium that has since closed. This year, the funding went to pay for the fun-filled day of the activities at the camp site, the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School. In meeting the the campers, Supervisor Petrone and Councilman Cuthbertson were joined by

at one of the Friends of the Smithtown Library Summer Concerts. “Although it started to rain, it didn’t stop Paris from singing a beautiful rendition of the national anthem. The crowd gave her a tremendous ovation,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

annual 9/11 Memorial Services at the Commack School District, Legislator Trotta heard Courtney sing the national anthem and invited her to sing it at the Friends of the Smithtown Library Summer Concerts. “Courtney has a beautiful voice and I hope her schedule will allow her to sing at next year’s concerts,” said Suffolk

Mentors will attend the orientation
to lead tours, help the freshmen with their new lockers and answer questions about school life. The PTA provided special buddy T-shirts for the mentors to wear during the orientation and other future activities. The mentors and freshmen will meet once a month throughout the year to discuss various topics and issues, including some that were covered in the role-playing exercises.

Juniors and seniors enrolled in Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s Freshmen Buddies mentor program in the Elwood School District are out to give their new schoolmates a lift. Many of the 112 students who signed on to serve as mentors to the school’s incoming freshmen participated in a special training workshop on August 12th filled with activities to prepare them for the day their mentees arrive in September. This year’s program theme is titled “We Rise by Lifting Others,” and each trainee received a packet that outlined their responsibilities and the do’s and don’ts of being a mentor. During the August 12th session, they participated in icebreaker activities, role-playing and a unique honesty exercise called “Walk the Line.” In this exercise, the mentors lined up to face Principal Carisa Burzynski and were asked to step forward when she read aloud specific traits applicable to high school teen life, whether good or bad, that could be attributed to them individually. Role-playing scenarios included peer pressure, bullying, time management, and social and academic transition issues that are common throughout the course of a high school career.

Town-based programs designed to help seniors maintain and stay in their homes are available. Both the Babylon and Huntington programs offer free craftsmen who are available by appointment to provide simple home repairs and installations for residents aged 60 and older. Many services can be provided, with the exception of those
that require the skills of a licensed craftsman. Eligible residents must reside in the Town of Babylon or Town of Huntington, own their own homes and live alone or with other seniors. Program volunteers provide simple maintenance and repair services like cleaning gutters, fixing faucets and installing special-

Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing their event to the Big Apple! The first-ever Big Apple Honor Flight will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War II, on the “Flight of a Lifetime” next year on their inaugural trip on April 29th, 2017. Organizers of Big Apple Honor Flight have started
the planning process and are looking for volunteers and veterans to make their mission possible. The group has launched www. BigAppleHonorFlight. com, which contains additional information on how to get involved in the planning. Applications to apply to be a veteran honored on the flight can also be found on the website. They plan to take
75 WWII veterans on their first flight from NYC in the spring. These spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. “The purpose of today’s announcement is to spread the word to WWII veterans and their family members that Big Apple Honor Flight is here to serve New York City’s heroes of the Greatest Generation,” said Becky Maher, Co-Founder
and Chairwoman of Big Apple Honor Flight. “It is our goal to also recruit a few good men and women from the NYC area who have a shared interest in honoring our veterans to fill some important volunteer roles over the next few months. It takes a village, or in this case, a “city that never sleeps,” to put together a true Honor Flight experience. We look forward to working with the talent and patriotism that we know resides in the Big Apple.” Big Apple Honor Flight is a hub of the national Honor Flight Network whose mission is to transport veterans to Washington D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor and to receive the recognition they deserve

I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?
Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.
The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.
