Lorraine Deller, executive director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, said that in their roles as board of education members and school superintendents they have become guardians of Long Island’s “high performing and highly regarded” public schools. Speakers included Roger Tilles, who serves as Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents, and New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia. They provided updates on changes being made to education policy such as state assessments and teacher evaluations. Regent Tilles explained

that now more than ever teachers and administrators from local school districts are a part of these discussions. “We’re listening to you,” he said. Commissioner Elia spoke about the state Education Department’s plan to meet the requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, commonly known as ESSA. More than 150 meetings have been held throughout the state with input received from administrators, teachers, parents and students. She also spoke about the need to provide all students in the state with access to higherlevel courses and career and technical programs, and said that a revised teacher evaluation system is in the works. Following her presentation, she took questions from the FIRST PITCH - Congressman Pete King recently threw out the first pitch to Mets audience on a variety of Great Bud Harrelson before a Long Island Ducks game at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip. Joseph Bruchac presented a dynamic 60-minute program on Native American storytelling and performed the flute. Brewster-walker acts as chair of the Board of Trustees and executive director for the Long Island Indigenous People Museum and Research Institute in Ronkonkoma. For more than forty years, Brewster-walker has

researched local people of color, which compelled her to write the book The Colored Girl from Long Island, and an upcoming four-volume series on Long Island black and Native American people in World War I. This event was funded in part by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The Salut au Monde series began with The Immigration Challenge with Tatyana Kleyn on Friday, June 23rd, and was followed with ReDiscovering Walt with Zachary Turpin on Saturday, July 8th.The series will continue with Outsider/Insider Poetry Recital by Bi-Lingual Students, October TBD; and Wild Things, Wild Places with Jane Alexander on Sunday, December 10th. Of Sunrises & Stepping Stones I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. As such, my expectations of such days tend to aim for a level of unreasonable perfection, whether celebrating my own or that of a loved one; feeling that, somehow, this one day represents an omen of things to come over the next 364. This year, I decided to begin my day by driving to my favorite local sunrise spot, in the hope of catching one of those breathtakingly spectacular views first thing in the morning. All week, the weather looked to be beautiful, clear skies and sunshine all the way. Though it seemed exceptionally gray and gloomy as I headed south, I hoped the clouds would soon be accented by shooting rays of gold and pink.

Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home. New beginnings, indeed. And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?” Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time. As I attempted to capture

Native Storytelling

The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) presented its third installment in its series Salut au Monde, on Sunday, August 13th, with Joseph Bruchac and Sandi Brewster-walker. Joseph Bruchac presented a dynamic 60-minute program on Native American storytelling and performed the flute. Sandi Brewster-walker then discussed local indigenous families as part of her examination of “the invisible people with a rich history.” While children made dream catchers, the audience asked the speakers thoughtful questions. The event concluded with a book signing and complimentary tour of the birthplace. Huntington town board member Tracey A. Edwards was in attendance, and spoke about the importance of the event due to recent disruptions in our national community. WWBA executive director Cynthia Shor said, “Our Salut au Monde series is named after one of Walt Whitman’s poems. In the spirit of Whitman, our programs aim to create community conversations and foster understanding.”

For over thirty years, Joseph Bruchac has been creating poetry, short stories, novels, anthologies and music that reflect his Native American heritage and traditions. He is the author of more than 120 books for children and adults. The bestselling Keepers of the Earth: Native American Stories and Environmental Activities for Children and others of his “Keepers” series, with their remarkable integration of science and folklore, continue to receive critical acclaim and are used in classrooms throughout the country. Sandi Brewster-walker is an independent historian, genealogist, freelance writer, and business owner raised in North Amityville. She is a member of the Montaukett Nation, and has traced her ancestry back to the Shinnecock, Unkechaug, Matinecock, Massapequa, and Setalcott Nations. Brewster-walker acts as chair of the Board of Trustees and executive director for the Long Island Indigenous People Museum and Research Institute in Ronkonkoma. For more than forty years, Brewster-walker has researched local people

of color, which compelled her to write the book The Colored Girl from Long Island, and an upcoming four-volume series on Long Island black and Native American people in World War I. This event was funded in part by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The Salut au Monde series began with The Immigration Challenge with Tatyana Kleyn on Friday, June 23rd, and was followed with ReDiscovering Walt with Zachary Turpin on Saturday, July 8th.The series will continue with Outsider/Insider Poetry Recital by Bi-Lingual Students, October TBD; and Wild Things, Wild Places with Jane Alexander on Sunday, December 10th. A Hometown Hero Mikey Brannigan, Northport resident and Paralympic gold medalist, was honored at Northport High School on August 9th for his Paralympic records and medals, but above all, his good character. Brannigan, who was diagnosed with autism at age 3, is the only Paralympic athlete in history to hold records in the 1500m, 3000m and 5000m simultaneously. Northport-East Northport Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer and Northport High School Principal Dan Danbusky were joined by other district administrators, staff members, local dignitaries and students to celebrate Brannigan as a hometown hero and inspiration. Assemblyman Chad

Lupinacci, Sen. John Flanagan, Assemblyman Andrew Raia and Sen. Carl Marcellino each shared remarks about Brannigan’s accomplishments and presented him with citations and proclamations. Awards were also provided on behalf of Legislator Dr. William Spencer and Legislator Robert Trotta. Brannigan’s coach, Sonja Robinson, was in attendance as well. “Mikey is anchored in the character traits that make him a champion, and he learned that here in Northport,” she said. “He loves competing and he loves the sport, but above all he is the personification of a good sportsman.” She noted that after every race, no matter how he does, he shakes his competitors

hand. “He has touched so many lives in so many ways that it’s really inexplicable, but it’s also very inspiring,” said Mr. Banzer. “Yes, we have the medals and the honors, and he works tremendously hard along with his coaches and parents to push himself to be the best, but it’s really his character that just exudes for all of us here in Northport.”
