team of 10 Elwood students entering grades six through nine in the fall took part in the 17th Annual Suffolk County Battle of The Books competition, held at Stony Brook University on August 10th. Competing as “The Elwood Things,” the team members were assigned eight books to read over the summer. They participated in weekly study sessions during which they quizzed one another on the books being read. Congratulations to all!

The Long Island Game Farm recently received a hammock made out of a used fire hose that was created by a retired firefighter for the Game Farm’s gibbons. The gibbons, who are sisters, immediately started enjoying their new hammock once it was installed in their cage. Tom Lambui, a retired fireman and husband of Stacy Lambui, who works in the Game Farm’s Customer Service Department, acquired an old fire hose from Anthony
J. Morabito, Service Representative, Firematic Supply Co. in East Yaphank. Mr. Lambui built the new hammock and presented it to the Game Farm for the gibbons to use. “We are so thankful for Tom’s generous gift,” says Melinda Novak, Vice P r e s i d e n t / C o - O w n e r, Long Island Game Farm. “We recently installed the hammock and the gibbon sisters immediately started enjoying it. It’s really wonderful!” A gibbon is a part of the
ape family, and spends the majority of its time in trees. Gibbons range in color from gray and black to brown. They have extremely long arms which help them balance and settle as they jump from tree to tree. They can jump more than 25 feet and land fairly easily. Formation Flights
This Labor Day weekend the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport will launch an unprecedented formation flight of historic B-25 Mitchell bombers and WWII escort fighters for a tribute flight near the World Trade Center and Statue of Liberty to salute our armed forces serving in the War on Terror.
Throughout the upcoming holiday weekend, Friday, August 30th through Monday September 2nd, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., these aircraft will also be on public display at the museum’s Farmingdale facility along with a squadron of other World War II planes, vintage cars and period armor as it hosts
its annual Wings, Wheels and Tracks celebration. Flight experiences will also be available in a B-25. Labor Day weekend adult admission at the museum is $15, Senior/ Veteran (with ID) is $10, children between 4 and 12 are $4 and children three and under are free.

quarter average. In an era where college admissions are at an all time high in selectivity, those few points can make or break a person. Something as small as forgetting to turn in that book report freshman year can, in time, prevent you from attaining your dreams. With this in mind, it is an absolute necessity to complete your work! Even if school hasn’t yet started, the choices you make can affect your standing in September. In my school, your summer work accounts for about 20% of your first quarter grade! That means, if you were to get a zero on that work, you could get a maximum of only eighty.
Study hard now, so you won’t have to the night before school starts. Doing a little bit of work each night will undoubtably make your last few days of summer more enjoyable. Even though reading a book or doing some math problems may seem like a terrible time, every moment you spend will be repaid when you get into the college of your dreams. Putting in the extra effort now will result in a positive outcome in the future. On the other hand, slacking during your summers will only haunt you. Take the first step towards a superior grade - do your summer homework!

As summer comes to a close, many teens find it easy to get caught up in the stress and monotony associated with school. Some find it even easier to give up on the coursework assigned during the summer break. Reading all of the books and doing all of the mathematics packets may seem like the least desirable option during these warm months, but it is undoubtably the most crucial. Summer homework does not bring many students joy. Summer homework does, however have an enormous impact on your grades. Missing this first assignment can be detrimental to your first

Registration is now underway for the 33rd Annual Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament. The tournament is open to tennis players who have not qualified to play in this year’s U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. Intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0), and advanced (4.04.5+) players from more than forty Long Island communities are expected to participate. The purpose of the tennis tournament is to provide an enjoyable recreational activity, while helping those in desperate need. All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children throughout the world. Assistance is provided where the need is greatest, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. Events consist of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The cost is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles.

Tide Mill Tour Dates The Huntington Historical Society presents The Van Wycks-Lefferts Tide Mill Tour on the following dates: Monday, August 26th, at 3 p.m. Monday, September 9th, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 24th, at 2:15 p.m. The price is $10 for members; $15 for nonmembers The mill was built in 1795
and is the only surviving mill in Huntington. This historic site provided a way for farmers to transform their oats, wheat and corn into flour, which made the mill an important part of the local agricultural past. In addition, it is one of the best preserved 18th century tide mills in the country. This is a unique and enjoyable way to experience Huntington’s history.
These private tours are accessible by a short boat ride only. Plase note that neither the boat nor the mill is handicapped accessible. This trip is not available to children under age twelve. Listening Session
On August 13th, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center Inc. (ADRC) took part in the New York Caregiver Listening Session, which was presented by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the Council of Senior Centers and Services of New York City, Inc. (CSCS), and the New York State Caregiving & Respite Coalition (NYSCRC). The session was held at Dowling College and was one of several throughout the state of New York. The panel was moderated by Neal Lane, the President of AARP New York and – in addition to Ms. Malack-Ragona – included: Bobbie Sackman, Director of Public Policy CSCS of New York City; Holly Rhodes-Teague, Director, Suffolk County Office for the Aging; Vicky Meyerhoefer, Director, Nassau County Office for the Aging; and Bill Ferris, New York State Legislative Representative, AARP New York. Panelists and those in attendance discussed the challenges that caregivers face, the trends they are seeing within the industry, whether or not the state of
DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the lower limbs. It affects up
to two million Americans annually. If the clot breaks loose, it can travel to the lungs, causing a

On August 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. will host its 2nd Annual Riverhead Walk for Alzheimer’s & Clambake, which will be held in beautiful downtown Riverhead. Continental breakfast and registration will start at 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and a ribbon cutting and start of the Walk at 11 a.m. The Walk will begin at Milton L. Hospital and spent time as a newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She began volunteering at the hospital in 2012 and has donated more than 200 hours of service to patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. The daughter of Jerome and Marian O’Grady, she is a rising senior at Ward Melville High School. “Elizabeth has been described as a very mature and responsible high school student,” Kress said. “In the playroom, she engages in various play activities with the patients and their siblings and goes out of her way to make sure that the children have whatever they need. She has been known to stay after her shift to find a missing game or DVD that a child has asked for. Elizabeth is a pleasure to work with and a great addition to the Child Life department.” Stony Brook University Hospital Volunteers provide help each year caring for patients and spend time with patients’ family members. Each year, more than 700 Junior and Senior Volunteers assist staff with the day-today work that contributes to a quality healthcare experience for patients and families. Stony Brook University Hospital has named Mary Briney as Volunteer of the Year and Elizabeth O’Grady as Junior Volunteer of the Year for 2013 in recognition of their dedicated volunteer service to the hospital. O’Grady and Briney were among those honored at the hospital’s annual Volunteer Recognition luncheon, held on July 17th at the Hilton Garden Inn. Volunteers received awards for reaching service milestones ranging from 100 to 14,500 hours of service. Briney began her volunteer service in 2011 and has donated nearly 500 hours to Stony Brook University Cancer Center patients. “At the Cancer Center, Mary coordinates the biweekly soup luncheon where she prepares warm bowls of soup to distribute to patients who are looking for a soothing snack while receiving their cancer treatments,” said Kathy Kress, Assistant Director of Volunteer Services at SBUH. “At the hospital, Mary acts as the ambassador for the inpatient Arts in Medicine program. She is always there to help out so that the patients get the most benefit from the activity. Mary is affable, empathetic and a genuine caring person. She is always in tune with the patients’ needs and always makes sure whatever is needed is done with care and accuracy.” O’Grady, 18, was born at Stony Brook University

A Time To Celebrate By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who
play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things
– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived! So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along. It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

Rebuilding Together and the American Red Cross have joined forces to help bring nearly 90 homes devastated by Hurricane Sandy back to safe and healthy housing conditions. Thanks to a $2.25 million grant from the American Red Cross to Rebuilding Together, these low-income homeowners can look forward to rebuilding their lives and returning to their communities.
Rebuilding Together’s local affiliates and volunteers in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County and Jersey City will be providing free critical home repairs in many of the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. Most of the homes will require modifications and repairs that may address electrical and plumbing issues, flooring, drywall, appliance replacements, painting, basement and
exterior rehabilitation with the goal of ensuring all of the homes are safe, healthy and livable. Those eligible for services include lowincome families, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and veterans. “We greatly appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with the Red Cross in the long term recovery of communities devastated by Hurricane Sandy,” said John L. Fiegel, interim president and CEO

Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center, a member of Catholic Health Services (CHS), is pleased to announce that they have received a grant for $300,000 to help support the funding of the Children’s Care Pavilion for ventilator dependent children. This pavilion will address the urgent need for these services on Long Island. Additional grants and resources will allow Our Lady of Consolation to extend their clinical expertise and provide long-term care to a special population of ventilator dependent children. When a child living on Long Island becomes sick or injured and requires the long term assistance of a ventilator for breathing, there is at present no local comprehensive program to support them. These children must be relocated miles from home, often out of state for their care. Last year, Catholic Health Services received a HEAL grant of 3.2 million dollars to begin development of a cross continuum of care. Catholic Health Services hopes to achieve a continuum of care for these special patients through collaboration between its members. A 10-bed pediatric rehabilitation unit at St. Charles Hospital will provide initial acute rehabilitation for children
who recently experienced a catastrophic event with a goal of returning them home with support from a pediatric team of Catholic Home. Children unable to return home will be transferred to long-term care at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Center (OLC). OLC’s pediatric ventilator unit will be a 22 bed pavilion built entirely for the pediatric population within the existing footprint of the nursing home. This space will also include a child friendly outdoor recreation area. The educational, nutritional and clinical needs of these new pediatric residents will be provided within in a childfriendly environment. This will not be a unit for children embedded in a geriatric care facility. Rather, it will be a nurturing environment with its own discrete entrance, space, specialized staff, and program with the sole focus of quality care for children. “This funding from the O’Toole Foundation advances our efforts to develop this critical resource for children and their families,” said Joseph Tomaino, Executive Vice President for Continuing Care Division of Catholic Health Services, “The impact of injury or illness on these families is compounded by the painful separation that they must go through in order to obtain services.”

LIFESAVING ACTIONS - The East Northport Fire Department recently recognized EMT Jon Desjardins with the Department’s EMT Medal and the Chiefs Medal, for his lifesaving actions on the Long Island Rail Road in October of 2012. While commuting to work, Desjardins assisted in the resuscitation of a cardiac arrest patient on the train, which contributed to the full recovery of the 53-year-old man.
