Waiting Out The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here at home waiting for the floodwaters to recede from the latest torrential downpour to douse Long Island, I am reminded of how we are all truly at the mercy of Mother Nature. If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything, it was that no amount of preparation can adequately hold its own against the wrath of the elements. In this, we are all equal. And yet, there are
those who will try. Try to drive through three feet of water, try to navigate over icy roads, try to convince themselves of some way to rise above those circumstances clearly beyond their control. If the past several years have taught us anything, it is that these efforts are futile. Stay home. Accept the fact that, sometimes, it is better to wait out the storm than to drive (literally) into it. The same can be said for life as a whole. As
The Deer Park Community Center is currently accepting registration for it’s Mom & Tot Program. The Program is offered to children between the ages of 2 and 4 on Monday or Friday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Children must be 2 by September 1st of this year. The Program features free play time, Arts & Crafts, Circle Time, Show & Tell, Story Time and more. Snack is also provided for the children. School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) has announced that the organization will host its 5th Annual SBPLI Golf Outing on October 6th benefiting the Long Island FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics programs. The golf outing will be at Stonebridge Golf Links & Country Club, located at 2000 Raynors Way in Smithtown. This year’s honorees will be Jeff and Stephanie Stern. In the spring of 2000, Stephanie and Jeff Stern attended the inaugural SBPLI FIRST® Robotics Competition at Suffolk Community College to support their son Danny and his newly formed robotics team, FIRST® Team #353, known as the POBots. From that moment on, they supported the team in many ways during the following years, including petitioning the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Board of Education to keep the technology program open and recruiting local sponsors. Danny also joined Plainview-Old Bethpage’s FIRST® Robotics team, and at the age of 6, their daughter Emily quickly became the team’s mascot. Emily later joined a local FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) team for students ages nine to 14, which competed in the NYC FLL Tournament. When the team lost its coach, Stephanie and another parent stepped up and began coaching the team together the following year. In 2003, Stephanie was approached by SBPLI’s founder, Fred Breithut, to join a new committee which would bring FLL programs to Long Island. She has been a dedicated and active committee member since then, helping to grow the program from 13 teams the first year to over 110 teams in the 10th year. She also helped to start the Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr. FLL) on Long Island for students ages six to nine. Three of the Sterns’ four children - Andrew, Danny and Emily - participated in FIRST® programs, chose Engineering as their majors in college, and can attest to the value of SBPLI’s FIRST® programs. During this journey Stephanie and Jeff realized they wanted to be even more involved with SBPLI. The Stern family is still active in volunteering their time and talents at many
FIRST® competitions and events. They are proud that members of their family and many of their friends have given their support as well. Jeff is well-known in the community as a FLL Judge, a sponsor, and a staunch supporter of the teams. Also, in the past year, they personally have raised more than $10,000 for the programs and have strongly supported the SBPLI TD Bank fundraising project. Registration and lunch start at 10:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. Golf will be followed by a cocktail reception at 5:00 p.m. and a dinner at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $900.00 per foursome or $250.00 per golfer which includes BBQ lunch, reception and dinner. For those who wish to attend the reception and dinner, but not golf, the cost is $100.00 per person. The deadline for registration is September 20th. SBPLI works hard to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It proudly sponsors and manages three unique FIRST programs on Long Island including

The Sea Tow Foundation has been awarded two grants from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The first grant award of $120,000 funds the continuation of the Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program, which has distributed more than 22,000 life jackets to boaters since its launch in 2008. The second grant award of $100,000 funds a new national Sea Tow Foundation campaign called “Designated Skipper.” The Sea Tow Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3)
organization created by Sea Tow CEO and Founder Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer to promote safe boating practices. “These two grants will help us to continue giving boaters the tools and education they need to stay safe on the water,” said Gail R. Kulp, Executive Director of the Sea Tow Foundation. “We would like to thank the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund and the Coast Guard for recognizing and supporting these important boating safety programs. life jacket loaner stands nationwide where boaters can borrow a life jacket for a day on the water, free of charge. The purpose of the Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program Grant is to increase the number of loaner stands in the U.S., specifically in areas where there have been high incidents of drowning. Starting in October, the Sea Tow Foundation will be accepting applications from non-profit organizations and state boating agencies across the country to host one or more life jacket loaner stands in their local areas. While many of the existing life jacket loaner stands are maintained by regional Sea Tow franchisees, this will be the second year that the Sea Tow Foundation has worked with other organizations to ensure that more boaters have access to free loaner life jackets. The new “Designated Skipper” Campaign is part of the Sea Tow
Foundation’s ongoing effort to encourage boaters to Designate a Sober Skipper while out on the water. Public awareness and educational materials will be distributed to boaters in an effort to help them understand the dangers of operating a boat under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and why they should Designate a Sober Skipper whenever they are out boating. The Sea Tow Foundation will be working with numerous non-profit organizations, state boating agencies and for-profit companies in the boating industry to help spread this message. “Boating under the influence and drowning are two of the leading causes of death for recreational boaters,” said Gail R. Kulp, Executive Director of the Sea Tow Foundation. “These deaths could be prevented by borrowing a properly fitting life jacket and Designating a Sober Skipper each time boaters head out on the water.”

“Bloodfest” A Success On August 6th, Legislator Kennedy held his 5th Annual Bloodfest, a blood and food driv,e at his office located in the North County Complex in Hauppauge. As always, the New York Blood Center and Long Island Cares were on site collecting both blood and food donations respectively. Long Island Cares, founded by the late Harry Chapin, has been collecting and distributing food to the hungry of Long Island since 1980. New York Blood Center (NYBC) was established in 1964 and is one of the largest communitybased, nonprofit blood collection and distribution organizations in the United States. Since Bloodfest’s inception, a key aspect has been tits laid back atmosphere with live music and a barbeque for all those who donate or help with the drive. This day could not have occurred
without the generosity of local merchants, such as Walmart, Trader Joe’s, King Kullen, Meat Farms, Handy Pantry and Subway, who all provided food, drinks or supplies to aid in this event. The Hauppauge Fire Department lent a helping hand by donating enough ice to fill several coolers used to store the drinks and the IBEW, Local 25 lent their grill to the office for cooking. Once again, the Suffolk County IT Band provided live music and serenaded the crowd with a wide selection of classic rock music. Bloodfest V was an incredible success, as the number of blood and food donors was even larger than that of the previous year. The New York Blood Center collected a total of 73 units or pints of blood from 54 whole blood donors and 20 red blood cell donors. Long Island Cares collected 100 pounds of food or the equivalent of
83 meals. Science Academy Visit
Legislator Steve Stern toured the Park Shore Day Camp Science Academy and viewed the daVinci Surgical Robot, which is used by surgeons for complex medical procedures. Dr. Ben Schwartz, a surgeon at Good Samaritan Hospital, arranged for exhibition of the robot. Legislator Stern was joined by Huntington Councilwoman Susan A. Berland, HHH BOE VicePresident Betty DeSabato, HHH BOE Trustee Diana Acampora and HHH Director of Science, Christian Fogarazzo. The Science Academy program at Park Shore Country Day Camp was founded last year to provide hands-on science learning for campers in either a halfday or full-day program.
The program’s director, Julian Aptowitz, teaches Physics at Half Hollow Hills High (HHH) School West and is the Coach of the award winning HHH “Thundercolts” Robotics team. The program provides instruction in earth science, marine science and robotics, providing varied enrichment learning for campers. Students at the Academy have had the opportunity to use the Da Vinci Robot, as well as a 3-D printer. “I am pleased to join with Park Shore Owners, Bob and Chuck Budah, Julian Aptowitz and the entire staff of the Park Shore Science Academy to celebrate the Academy’s success. I applaud Bob and
Chuck Budah’s passion and foresight in developing this outstanding program, which has grown tremendously after only one year, to better prepare our young people for the workplace and world they will help to create. Thanks also to Dr. Schwartz for providing students with the opportunity to experiment with this extraordinary technology. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs, particularly hands-on interactive learning for young children, will not only prepare our students for tomorrow’s careers, but spark creativity, curiosity and a love of learning that will serve them well throughout their lives.”
Induction Ceremony Set
Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta congratulated RJ Pitta of Boy Scout Troop 75 at his recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor. RJ, a resident of Kings Park, earned the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout through his commitment to the community, as well as the completion of his Eagle Scout Project, which was to enhance the Kings Park High School courtyard.
He oversaw a group of volunteers who refurbished the gazebo and he built two benches to install inside of it. RJ designed and planted a perennial garden and added pavestones to the area. RJ will be attending the University of Fredonia where he plans to major in History and English with the goal of becoming a teacher. Legislator Trotta, who coached RJ’s younger brother Phillip in soccer,
said, “Your pledge to our town has been evident since 2007 when you joined the Boy Scouts, and now that you have attained the rank of Eagle Scout you have demonstrated that you are a leader and an active member of our community who only wants the best for the youth and great people of Kings Park. I applaud your actions and urge you to keep up the good work.”

VET DOG FUNDRAISER - A group of friends held a huge yard sale last weekend, donating the proceeds to the “America’s Vet Dogs” Program. Girl Scouts of Suffolk County is pleased to announce that Girl Scout Anna Krauss was recently chosen as one of Girl Scouts of the USA’s 2014 Young Women of Distinction. Anna was chosen from hundreds of Girl Scouts who earned their Gold Awards - the highest award in Girl Scouting - for creating sustainable projects that impact the world. Anna, who suddenly became deaf when she was in third grade, was an exceptional student. However, she struggled to perform on tests requiring listening comprehension. Many deaf students rely on
speech reading the proctor and a sign language interpreter, which can be problematic if the student is not fluent in sign language. Additionally, certain signs have different meanings based on context. Anna’s desire to change the listening comprehension requirements for standardized tests became the focus of her Gold Award project. She appeared before the New York Education Reform Commission to ask that the state’s English exams remove the requirement that all students listen to a passage before answering questions. Anna’s appeal did not go unnoticed. The New York State Education Department decided to revise the Test Access and Accommodations for Students with Disabilities document to recommend that the availability of a written transcript of the listening selection of a state examination be available to deaf students.
“Anna’s perseverance and dedication to her Gold Award project are inspirational,” says Yvonne Grant, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “She is a strong role model for girls, and epitomizes the Girl Scout ideals of leadership and courage. We are very proud of her.” The entries for Young Women of Distinction were reviewed by an external selection board comprised of Girl Scouts of the USA staff, as well as funders including 100kin10, Discovery Education, Kappa Delta, MetLife, NYAS, Teach for America, and the The Cricket Island Foundation.
