To all those fellow concertgoers, I have a question: why are you attending these shows? Because, by all indications, it is not to sit back and actually listen to the music being played before you. At first, I thought it may have been an isolated case; but the last several performances I have attended have only served to solidify my perception that no one is paying attention. Mind you, I’m not referring to the popular free summer concert series that pop up all over the area, the ones that encourage you to bring your own seating and refreshments and enjoy a picnic-like atmosphere with your family and friends. I’m talking about

the amphitheater-style shows that you most likely paid pretty good money to see. First off, I understand that the scheduled opening acts may not be the main attraction, but still – it would be nice to throw a little support behind today’s up-and-coming artists. Who knows what they may go on to achieve in a few years. Secondly, once the headliner hits the stage, why would you feel the need to spend the better part of their performance taking selfies, scrolling through Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook… oh, and let’s not forget the art of chasing Pokémon. You are here. You don’t need to inform every single one of your friends of that fact. Just sit back and enjoy it. Appreciate the talent before you. Sure,

you may want to snap a photo or two, maybe record a short video of your favorite number; but, beyond that, I don’t understand the need to be preoccupied by everything other than that entertainment which you paid to see. Whatever happened to the days of lighters in the air and hands clapping along, of singing the chorus in unison with 15,000 of your closest friends and being present in the moment? I’m pretty sure that, even with all of today’s technological advances, the basic concept of appreciating your surroundings has not gone out of style. Perhaps we should all make an effort to get back in touch with this principle. I’ll let you know how tonight’s concert goes. Via Facebook, of course ;)

Visitors to the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s Reichert Planetarium can now view the Sun through a new solar telescope. The Planetarium has just installed a Lunt Solar Systems hydrogen-alpha solar telescope in the Observatory – for daytime observation of the Sun. Dave Bush, the Planetarium’s technical and production coordinator, and an astronomy educator, said the solar telescope is mounted “piggy back” onto the 16-inch Meade reflecting telescope in order to track the Sun across the sky. “The refractor-style telescope with its 80-milimeter optical aperture gives us sharp detail and contrast of features on the surface and the limb, or edge, of the Sun,” he said. “This telescope allows us to see prominences, flares, super

granulation, filaments, and active regions.” Bush explained that hydrogen-alpha light is emitted by the hydrogen atoms that make up the majority of the Sun’s composition. When electrons within the hydrogen atoms absorb energy and rise to a higher energy level then fall back to their original orbits, light is emitted at a particular wavelength that can be seen with the specialized telescope.” “Typically, telescopic views of objects in outer space rarely change before our eyes in real-time,” Bush said. “However, on a day when the Sun is particularly active we can watch features on the Sun evolve before our eyes while looking through an H-alpha telescope! “The sun is dynamic and alive. It changes daily, and rotates.” Bush explained the solar features in the picture at

left, shot by photographer Alan Friedman.: The wisps of white curling off the upper left curve of the Sun are prominences, or arcs of gas that erupt from the surface. Sometimes the loops extend thousands of miles into space. The lighter spots and streaks are called plages, the French word for beaches, and are, appropriately hot spots or bright emissions caused by emerging flux regions associated with the magnetic field of the Sun. The tiny hair-like lines that extend from the surface are spicules. These are jets of hot gas that can rise up to 6,000 miles high. Most last only 15 minutes before morphing into new spicules. The dark spots are sun spots, which are cooler areas of the surface caused by the suppression of convection cells due to the Sun’s strong magnetic field.

The Sun is 93 million miles from Earth, and its size is almost beyond human comprehension – 1.3 million Earths could fit inside the Sun. The solar telescope is available for viewing on a limited schedule, on clear days. (The Sun is not observable on cloudy or rainy days.)

New Partnership Huntington Learning Center has teamed up with the Coalition for the Homeless for its annual drive for homeless students, called Project: Back to School. Established in 1981, the Coalition for the Homeless is the nation’s oldest advocacy and direct service

The Coalition helps more than 3,500 homeless New Yorkers each day living in extreme poverty, offering a variety of programs that address immediate needs and help men, women and families overcome long-term barriers to employment and stability. SCHOOL SUPPLY DONATION - Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern joined the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless’ annual “Backpack Pirates” school supply collection drive and thanks to the generous response of members of our community, and the assistance of Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), in Huntington, was able to collect supplies that will enable many of the neediest students in our community to start the new school year with the tools they need to succeed.

The Dix Hills Fire Department received an emergency 911 call from a Dix Hills husband after his pregnant wife went into labor on Monday, August 8th, at 7:29 p.m. After the woman’s water broke and her contractions were five minutes apart just two days before her due date, the couple got into their car at their Crawford Drive home and realized they weren’t going to make it to the hospital in time. The 911 call brought the arrival of Dix Hills First Assistant Chief Tom Napolitano, Second Assistant Chief Alan Berkowitz, a Paramedic Responder and two Dix Hills ambulance crews. Arriving just a few minutes after the 911 call, EMT’s found the woman to be in a lot of pain. Dix Hills Rescue Squad Lieutenant EMT Meagan Pereira went

into the car to check the mother and the head of the baby was already crowning. Pereira gently guided the baby out and held the baby until he was born at 7:35 p.m. Paramedic Chris Tremblay suctioned the baby boy and when the newborn was determined to be stable, Lieutenant Pereira clamped and cut the umbilical cord. The baby and mother were taken to the ambulance where the baby was warmed up. EMTCC Chief Berkowitz held and suctioned the baby as Paramedic Tremblay assisted the mother. Suffolk County Police also responded and provided an escort and blocked traffic for the ambulance on the way to Huntington Hospital. Also assisting in the delivery were EMT’s Louis Aquino, Thomas

Nostramo and Driver Matthew Antretter on the first ambulance, as well as EMT’s Jonna Brady, Martin Levy, and Driver Hillary Bogi on the second ambulance. After arriving at the hospital, the baby was brought right to the nursery and the proud dad was hugging and kissing the rescue squad crew. This was the second baby for the Dix Hills couple. The baby’s name Blaise and pronounced “Blaze” was decided months ago, but very appropriate since he was delivered by the Dix Hills Fire Department. According to his mom. he came into this world “like a blaze of glory.” This was the first baby delivered for Chief Berkowitz and Lieutenant Pereira, and the second for Paramedic Tremblay.

Lighthouse Restoration The project embarking on the critical foundation repair to the Huntington Lighthouse has begun, prompting the Town of Huntington to establish zones in the vicinity of the lighthouse where during the next three to four months speeds will be reduced and boaters will be banned to help ensure safety. Additionally, the Town will once again impose a 5 mph speed limit within a half mile of the Lighthouse September 3rd so that boaters wanting to attend the Lighthouse’s annual Music Festival can enjoy the event and leave safely. The speed limit will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The restoration project officially got underway about three weeks ago when equipment began being positioned around the iconic Lighthouse, which dates to 1912. The actual heavy work is beginning this week and is expected

to continue for three to four months. The project includes cleaning the foundation of natural growth and deteriorated concrete; removing compromised rebar and replacing it with state-ofthe-art rebar drilled into the foundation; expanding the foundation to increase the Lighthouse’s structural base by 12 to 18 inches; removing and then replacing and expanding the rip rap in areas of high wave action and winter ice interaction; and repairing the upper structure masonry, eliminating structure and surface cracks to ensure water-tight integrity of the concrete tower. The $871,000 project is Phase 1, and represents a major phase of the Lighthouse restoration. Because of the ongoing construction, the Town has established an exclusionary zone in all directions around the Lighthouse, banning persons and

boats from getting closer than 100 feet. The Town is also imposing a 5 mph speed limit in the area immediately beyond the exclusionary zone, and will be vigorously enforcing both restrictions. Two maps showing the restricted areas – one version showing coordinates locating the speed buoys, the other simply demarcating the affected area – can be downloaded from the Town’s website, at www. huntingtonny.gov “Everybody in the Town is excited that the major restoration of the Huntington Lighthouse is underway, and I congratulate the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society for making this project a reality,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “While I know people are curious about the progress of the work, it is important for their safety and the safety

Recently, the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce had their second to last Summer concert, with Beginnings performing their tribute to Chicago. Many gathered to hear the songs of Chicago, as well as give back to the community. To kick off the concert, DJ Burns from Middle Country School district sang our National Anthem. As always, Long Island Cares was in attendance

to collect food for those in need amongst our communities. The Nesconset Chamber of Commerce was able to collect over eighteen hundred dollars with their fifty-fifty raffle, their largest collection this summer; as always, Little Miss Nesconset was happy to select the raffle winner out of a hat. Beginnings performed their concert not in the Gazebo, as bands normally

do, but at crowd level with the rest of the concertgoers. They performed a wonderful show and all in attendance seemed to enjoy themselves. “This was a beautiful night and a great show. I want to thank the Nesconset Chamber for making everything run smoothly this evening, as well as DJ Burns for singing the National Anthem,” said Leslie Kennedy.

In addition, the Huntington Town harbormaster, working with the Suffolk County Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Lloyd Harbor Village harbormaster, will

again step up patrols in the area of the festival, which attracts more than 1,000 boats carrying over 12,000 attendees who come from as far away as Rhode Island and New Jersey. The Town will have rapid rescue recovery units available, if necessary, and work in coordination with local fire departments on rescues. As has been done in the past, law enforcement boats will be strategically located throughout the area to help ensure an orderly dispersal after the event and to optimize the response time for boats in need of assistance. Among the agencies that have committed resources to assist in enforcement and rescue operations are the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Eatons Neck, the Suffolk County and Northport Village Police Departments, the Lloyd Harbor Village harbormaster and the Centerport, Cold Spring Harbor, Halesite,

Huntington and Northport Fire Departments and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. This is the fifth consecutive year the Town has set the reduced speed limit for the area around the Lighthouse during the Music Fest, a move that was originally prompted by a tragedy in Oyster Bay on July 4, 2012, that took the lives of three children who drowned when the boat in which they were watching a fireworks display capsized. After that tragedy, Huntington enacted legislation authorizing the Harbormaster’s Office to establish 5 mph zones during aquatic events and increased boating safety classes and other boating safety measures. Last year, the Town placed two buoys carrying the warning, “Slow No Wake” in the area around the lighthouse. Page Graduation

The culmination of the Suffolk County Legislative Page program came last Wednesday with the page program graduation. This summer the Suffolk County Legislature and in particular the Legislature Clerk’s office ran the page program. This program consists of an internship mixed with mock legislature; students play the role of legislator and learn how the legislative process works on a county level, while helping legislators several

times a week with their day to day duties in the office. From Legislator Kennedy’s office, both Maria Massimo and Stephen Mott graduated from the program. Stephen is going into his sophomore year at SUNY Geneseo and he hopes to study law after his undergraduate career. Maria is going into her junior year at Villanova University and also hopes to study law; she has an interest in international politics and hopes to work in that realm one day.

Dobrin says that in reviewing the potential poems she was delighted to find such rich material. “I guess Whitman is in the Long Island DNA,” she says. Some of the poems selected include David Axelrod’s “Random Beauty,” Margaret Garry Burke’s “Sunflowers,” Stanley Barkan’s “Crossings,” and “In that twilight before sleep,” by Barbara Novack. “We generally try to match the poem with the theme of the speaker or with events of the time,” says Dobrin, “so around Veterans Day we are considering Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan’s ‘Poem #1-

For some humor Joan Digby’s “Waking the Students,” will be featured around the time college students are taking their final exams and most can relate to Tony Iovino’s “Where & When?,” a lament about overeating. “What makes that poem of just four short stanzas so interesting is how Iovino moves from humor to musings about the passage of time and aging,” says Dobrin. LI Poets Honored Long Island poets will be honored at the Ethical Humanist Society of LI from September through June. Each Sunday at the Ethical Society’s Sunday morning meeting a poem that was written by a poet who had a connection with Long Island will be read as part of the regular lecture at 11 a.m. Says Ethical Society president Linda Napoli of Mineola, “We want our members and attendees to have a rich experience on Sunday morning, so in addition to a talk on a topic of ethical concerns, we feature music and poetry.” Generally the Sunday morning poems draw from the vast world of poetry but this year the focus will be on Long Island. “Of course, we’ll lead off with Walt Whitman,” says Lyn Dobrin
