Long Island Heart Walk Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 17th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along

with friends and family members of all ages. “Walking briskly can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as much as running” said Bob Isaksen, Market President, Bank of America, Long Island and Chair of the 2017 Long Island Heart Walk. “I look forward to working with Executive Leaders across Long Island to help raise awareness and funds for the American

Back to School Drive Announced elected to the Smithtown Board of Education. Earlier this year, Governor Cuomo established the Scott Martella Public Service Fellowship that is awarded every two years to a student, who like Scott, is committed to public service and has a passion for helping others. The Fellow will serve for two years at the Department of Labor, where Scott had served for over a year, and will focus on community outreach, similar to the work that he championed throughout his career. Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory said: “Scott Martella was a truly special person with a passion for giving back. The mark he left on Suffolk County will not soon be forgotten. I want to applaud County Executive Bellone and LICH for continuing the legacy Scott began. Far too many Long Island families struggle with poverty, and programs like this school supply drive help ensure that every child starts their school year off on the right foot-with all the tools they need to succeed.” Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern said: “Our entire community plays an important role in collecting school supplies because all of our children need to start off the school year right. Scott Martella was an outstanding public servant who exemplified an active community coming

together for an important cause. This effort of donating much needed supplies is not only critical for so many children throughout Suffolk County but also continues Scott’s legacy.” The goal for this years drive is to prepare 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for children who are homeless or at-risk on Long Island. Last year’s event was a huge success having collected and assembled nearly 3,500 backpacks making a difference for Long Island’s homeless youth population. Scott had previously worked with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless on a myriad of projects and events including school supply drives, coat drives, holiday events and the annual point in time homeless count. Greta Guarton, Executive Director of the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless said: “Scott Martella was an amazing public servant who would have been truly proud to see our communities and public officials, like County Executive Bellone, coming together to help meet the needs of residents who are less fortunate. It is startling to think that in 2017 there are more than 1,800 children in Nassau and Suffolk Counties who are homeless but because of the collaboration and support of events like this

one, we are able to help meet the critical needs and have a positive impact on the people we serve.” John O’Neill, Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Social Services said: “I would like to thank the LICH for partnering with County Executive Bellone to provide the most needy children with a new backpack filled with the necessary tools to help them succeed in school. This will be a welcome relief for the children and parents and will also serve as a reminder for the children and families to know that there are people and organizations such as the LICH that truly care about them. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the Scott Martella Back-to-School Drive in partnership with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless to provide supplies for underprivileged students before the start of the school year. The donation drive will be held in memory of Scott Martella, the former Communications Director for County Executive Bellone who was tragically killed last year in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway. “Scott was a one of a kind public servant who deeply cared about giving back to those less fortunate in the community,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “As a former Smithtown School Board member, Scott had a passion for giving students the tools they needed to be successful. This event will help thousands of Long Island children while honoring Scott’s legacy and commitment he had to serving others.” Scott, who was 29 at the time of his passing, was widely considered a rising star in New York State government and public service. He impacted thousands of lives across Long Island and the state through his work in public service. Before the age of 30, Scott had already begun to assemble a list of accomplishments that included being the youngest person to be

*** Late Summer Seasonal Stroll Saturday, September 9th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. On this short stroll, one of a series designed to observe seasonal changes, we will witness summer’s slow, subtle change, as she withers and goes to seed. *** Birds with Botany for Beginners Sunday, September 17th, from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m. During this program, geared toward novice adult birders, we will be searching for birds. No birds? We’ll learn about plants. Responding to a call to action from Huntington Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards, a large roster of community-based organizations and the Stop & Shop supermarket chain have mobilized to gather food and donate it to help 80 youngsters enrolled in a Tri-CYA program whose weekends were food challenged. Councilwoman Edwards was recently made aware of the situation by TriCYA, the private, not-forprofit community based organization dedicated to supporting the growth and development of youth and their families in Huntington, South Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor. Councilwoman Edwards was told that the 80 children were receiving meals while attending Tri-CYA programs during the week, but were food challenged during the weekends when they were home. Councilwoman Edwards then reached out to the network of organizations, who responded quickly, as did Stop & Shop. “Thank you to Stop and Shop and all the service organizations in our community. This is an example of what we can do when we all work together on a common goal,” Councilwoman Edwards said at an event announcing the donations at the Stop & Shop on Jericho Turnpike in Huntington. “Stop & Shop is pleased

that our efforts can provide food and nourishment to youngsters in need,” said Cindy Carrasquilla, Manager of Public Relations and Community Relations for Stop & Shop New York Metro. “It is our privilege to lend assistance to those in the Huntington community who make sure that children are cared for.” Stop & Shop provided milk, cream cheese, butter, vegetables, fresh fruit and kid favorites such as hotdogs, soup, macaroni, ravioli, Lunchables, Pop Tarts and juice. Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC

Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and flourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

Family members in the Northport-East Northport School District beamed with pride on August 2nd and 4th, while watching their children perform the skills they learned during the course of several weeks in the Northport Music and the Arts Summer Program. Held at Northport High

School during the evening of August 2nd, several groups showcased their musical abilities including the elementary orchestra, elementary band and intermediate orchestra. In addition, those involved in the dance group performed an exciting flash mob during the day, in the halls

of East Northport Middle School. Families were invited for demonstrations on August 4th, the final day of the program. Here, the students took to their classrooms and under the guidance of their music teachers, showed off what they had learned.

Patch Program Unveiled

On Tuesday, August 1st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to introduce a new patch program that teaches scouts about the importance of energy conservation, as part of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math initiative (STEM). The event was held at the Discovery World STEM Center at Camp Sobaco in Yaphank. The center offers girls a hands-on approach

to exploring STEM through demonstrations, special guest presentations, and more. “As the former energy director of the Town of Brookhaven, I am pleased to join the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to unveil the new energy conservation patch program,” said Legislator Anker. “The partnership between PSEG and the Girl Scouts will inspire, motivate, and encourage our girls to explore the

exciting paths of STEM.” The Girl Scouts have partnered with PSEG Long Island for the new program, which teaches girls about the importance of electric safety and energy conservation in the home. Councilwoman Susan A. Berland attended the 5th annual Free Major League Baseball Clinic at Greenlawn Park. The event is sponsored by the Town of Huntington through the Parks and Recreation Department in cooperation with the KinderVision Foundation and the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association. Former Major League Baseball Players Fred Cambria, Tim Foli, Frank Tepedino, Jon Warden, George Foster and Darrell Evans taught the fundamentals of Baseball

and life skills to kids ages 6 to 15. Summer Lights Huntington Town Council members Susan A. Berland, Eugene Cook and Tracey A. Edwards joined officers from the Suffolk County Police Department’s Second Precinct August 3rd in marking the first night of “Summer Lights” at Gateway Plaza, located at New York Avenue and Olive Street in Huntington Station. Sponsored by the precinct’s community relations officers, with the support of the Town,

the event was designed to draw residents to the plaza to talk, listen to music and relax. The event also provided an opportunity for interacting with the police in an informal setting and to enjoy cotton candy, hot popcorn and soft drinks. The event was the brainchild of Second Precinct Officer Claudia Delgado, who had financial assistance from Source the Station, the community outreach arm of Renaissance Downtowns, the Town’s master

developer for Huntington Station. Council Members Berland, Cook and Edwards held a ceremonial switch flipping that turned on the string of lights illuminating the plaza for the vent (the strings of lights also have speakers that transmitted the music). The lights are scheduled to remain at the plaza for several weeks, allowing people to gather every night for more conversation.

That is what a group of local volunteers have in store for hundreds of needy children ages 6 to 17 in Suffolk County later this month, thanks to The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless who have again partnered with the Suffolk County Legislature to help needy children finish the summer with a blast. According to Legislator Lou D’Amaro, the children will spend a fun-filled day at a Suffolk County camp in the 12th Annual Back Pack Pirates Summer Fest in late August. At the end of the day, each child will receive a brand new backpack filled with school supplies. Hundreds of backpacks have been ordered and now donations of school supplies are NEEDED to finish filling them. Invitations to the Back

Pack Pirates event are currently being distributed to needy children at homeless shelters, local parish outreaches, and to families at Department of Labor sites across Suffolk County. Children will enjoy a day filled with fun camp activities including treasure hunts, swimming, nature games, a barbeque lunch, entertainment and much, much more. “These needy children don’t often get a chance to experience this type of adventure,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “It will be a fun and educational event and every participant gets to walk away with a cool back pack filled with supplies they will need for school. I am once again asking our local community to come out and generously support this great program.” Legislator D’Amaro’s office at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station is accepting donations now between

The Bell Tower of St. John’s and Tear Open a Book! are scheduled to be installed on boxes on Main Street, appropriately near St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Huntington Public Library. Shortly afterward should come installation of the remaining four works: Eileen Haritondas’ Fiery Sunflowers, on Depot Road between East 10th and 11th Streets; Alice Plusch’s Delectable Delights, at the intersection of Woodbury Road, Soundview Road, High Street and Carley Avenue; Splashes of Hope’s Heckscher Park, on Broadway, at the west exit of the North Parking Garage at the Huntington Long Island Rail Road Station; and Robert Giordano’s Celebrate Diversity, on Depot Road and East 17th Street. All of the works were chosen by a panel selected from the Town’s Public Art Advisory committee, which reviewed a total of 21 submissions in response to requests for proposals. Seven of the 10 works are by Huntington artists; the two artists responsible for the remaining three are from Bayport and Seaford. The installations will bring to 15 the number of signal

Incoming Elwood-John H. Glenn High School junior, Iván Andrade recently traveled to Italy as a result of his first-place win on the level three 2017 American Association of Teachers of Italian’s National Italian Exam. Iván and former high school senior Michael Hermanns, who placed first on the level five exam, were placed in a drawing with the students who earned first place on the exams. Both Iván and Michael were selected as winners and as a result, were awarded with a $500 monetary prize and a two-

week all-expenses-paid trip to Italy during the summer. As part of his paid trip, Iván participated in a program titled “A Door to Italy,” from July 22nd to August 5th, where he learned from Italian language experts and strengthened his skills. “Iván is an amazing student with such a big passion for foreign languages,” said Italian teacher Alessia Franco. “He had the gift since he was in the middle school.” Noting that the experience was an amazing one, Iván was able to see his education come to life

during his time abroad. He visited Genoa, Rome, Venice and Milan and his parents came along to see Italy for the first time with him. “I thank God for giving me such a unique opportunity to use what I had learned,” said Iván. “Even outside of A Door to Italy, in the city streets, I could see that the vocabulary that I had memorized, including the grammar and verb structure that I had fought with throughout my Italian year, had finally begun to make sense as it became a part of my daily life.”

The Town of Huntington’s efforts to bring art to public streets continues, with works installed on four traffic signal boxes in the past few weeks - including the first on a signal box in Huntington Station - three more scheduled by the end of the month, another three in the pipeline for installation by the end of September and a resolution to add 10 more scheduled for consideration at the August 15th Town Board meeting. Late last month, William Low’s Tacking off the Cape was installed on the signal box at the southeast corner of Main and New Streets in Huntington Village and Monica Chulewicz’ The Healing When The Sky Opens Up was placed on a box at Depot Road and East 13th Street in Huntington Station, the first in that community. Last week, another Low work, Bumblebee, was installed on the northwest corner of Main and Clinton Streets, and Jack Pierce’s Flowers was placed on the box at the southwest corner of Main Street and New York Avenue. Later this month, two works by Joseph Scinto,

boxes decorated since the program began in 2015. “Art on signal boxes serves a number of different purposes,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “For one, the art helps reduce graffiti on the boxes. But just as important, the art adds a distinctiveness and flair to our commercial districts. The boxes are interesting to look at, tell stories about our area and prove that you don’t have to go to a museum to see fine art. I thank our Business Improvement Districts for helping with some of the funding and I am pleased that we continue to be able to expand this popular program.” A total of $13,600 in funding was pledged by the Huntington Village and Huntington Station Business Improvement Districts; additional funding was to come from an appropriation from the Town’s Public Art Initiative. Because of lower than expected expenses for these installations, more than $9,380 remains from the pledged funds, allowing for an additional 10 installations. A resolution to be considered at the August 15th Town Board meeting notes that two different selection panels, one for Huntington Village and the other for Huntington Station, reviewed submissions from 27 different interested artists. Five of the selected works will be installed in Huntington Station, all along New York Ave, and five at various locations in Huntington Village. Eight artists are represented in the 10 works, including three whose other works were part of the earlier group this year.

Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-of-

pocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their

classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000

per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that

Man of the Year

Federation of Organizations honored volunteers from its Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs this past June at Stonebridge Country Club in Smithtown, New York. More than 250 guests attended The Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, held annually to recognize dedicated seniors making a difference in the lives of children with special needs as well as homebound seniors. During the event, emceed by News 12’s Doug Geed, Federation’s Chief Executive Officer, Barbara Faron, presented Chief Operating Officer Philip Matcovsky as the organization’s “Man of the Year,” for 30 years of outstanding service. Matcovsky joined Federation in 1987 as a counselor in the homeless outreach program before moving up the ranks to become a supervisor, director and Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Matcovsky has been instrumental in helping Federation and its 500 employees navigate major changes to managed care,

while managing day-to-day operations of an agency with a $48 million budget. He continues to strive for the best possible care for Long Island seniors, as well as individuals who are homeless or living with mental health challenges. Federation’s Senior Director of Outreach Services, Tracy Falkner, LMSW, awarded Volunteer of the Year Awards to Foster Grandparent Jeanette Ingenito and Senior Companion Lucy Caracciola for their exemplary care and service. The agency’s 140 Foster Grandparents currently mentor more than 2,500 children in Suffolk County, while Federation’s Senior Companion Program provides support and assistance to frail homebound seniors. Senator Phil Boyle (NYS 4th Senate District) and Ed Romaine, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor, served as Guest Speakers at the event, commending Federation’s volunteers for their efforts to enhance the quality of life of Long Island children and seniors. Other notable attendees included New York State

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (Assembly District 11) and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, who represents the Tenth Legislative District of New York. Representatives from Senator John E. Brooks’ office (NYS 8th Senate District) and Tom Croci’s office (NYS 3rd Senate District) were also in attendance. Generous event sponsors included Lincoln Computer Services, Baker Tilly, Corporate Synergies Group, Mutual of America and Valley National Bank. “The compassion, support and guidance provided by our volunteers impacts numerous seniors and young students in our communities,” said Barbara Faron, Chief Executive Officer, Federation of Organizations. “We’re thrilled to honor their deep dedication and commitment, as well as the distinguished career of my friend and colleague, Philip Matcovsky. Grant Jr. and Suffolk County Community College’s Athletic Director Kevin Foley will be honored by the Suffolk Community College Foundation at its 34th annual Golf Classic.
