The article is below: Rebuilding Together L o n g Island is a non-profit 5 0 1 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).
Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are a few main ways you can get involved with their organization:

Suffolk Seeks To Connect Female Vets With Resources, Creates Voluntary Registry A resolution sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) creating a voluntary registry for female veterans living in Suffolk County passed the Legislature unanimously recently, garnering bipartisan co-sponsorship from eight legislators: Deputy Presiding Officer Hahn and Legislators Richberg, Gonzalez, Piccirillo, Anker, Cilmi, Flotteron and Spencer. The resolution, developed by Berland in collaboration with the members of the Suffolk County Women Veterans Advisory Board, creates a voluntary registry for female veterans, enabling the County and local veterans’ organizations to more effectively perform outreach and provide resources to meet their needs. The registry will be created and maintained by the Suffolk County Veterans Service Organization and aims to connect female veterans not only with programs that specifically address their needs, but with fellow female veterans
as well. Registrants will be able to indicate their preferences, electing to keep their information private or allowing it to be disseminated to organizations that may be able to assist them. Veterans can also indicate whether representatives of the Veterans Service Agency or the Women Veterans Advisory Board are permitted to contact them directly. The registry is expected to be up and running later this fall. “Female veterans are an underserved group and for generations have remained distant from the male-centered veteran community,” said Legislator Berland, Chairwoman of the Legislature’s Veterans & Consumer Affairs Committee. “This voluntary registry will serve as a vital tool, connecting our female vets with the resources they deserve and need. For too long, existing systems have overlooked the needs of these women. For their service and valor, the very least they are entitled to is a seat at the table and the opportunity
to be connected to the organizations and services that can benefit them.” “The Suffolk County Women Veterans Advisory Board is excited to see all the momentum to support Suffolk County’s women veterans,” said Board Chairwoman Christine Glynn, USMC (Ret.) and Vice Chairwoman StaceyAnn Castro Tapler, USMC (Ret.). “We hope that every woman veteran will take advantage of this opportunity to register themselves. Armor Museum Opens With COVID-19 Protocols And A Motivational “Call To Arms” From World War II How to motivate visitors to maintain social distancing upon entering the Museum of American Armor? The Armor Museum has enlisted the Army. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters first created by the War Department during World War II. From G.I.s prepared to throw hand sanitizers (as opposed to hand grenades), to a masked Uncle Sam leading a charge against COVID, the posters will be situated throughout the museum, adjacent to its tanks, artillery pieces, and uniformed mannequins. Dr. Villard explained, “I already have a massive collection of these posters. I just looked through them and thought, ‘Okay, which ones could be modified, so that they keep something of the original spirit, but would be applicable to the
Covid crisis?’ “Some of the posters are kind of the traditional attack / over the top variety; but then others, like the ‘Knowledge Wins’ poster are more informationbased. Certain images will resonate with some people, and others will prefer a
different approach,” he continued. Museum of American Armor founder and president, Lawrence Kadish, stated, “We are following all the CDC protocols which allowed the museum to open on July 31st, but we wanted to make sure that our visitors’ behavior remained the first line of defense against spreading COVID-19. These imaginative reenvisionings of classic military posters by Dr. Villard are designed to get your attention, focus on COVID precautions, and to do so in a setting that reminds you America has gotten through much worse when it pulled together.” The Museum of American Armor has some 40 operational military vehicles under cover within Nassau County’s Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) honored Kenneth “Ken” Carlson of Melville and Robert “Bob” Santo of Huntington Station as Legislative District 17 Seniors of the Year at an outdoor, appropriately socially-distanced meeting of the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244 on July 8 at the Greenlawn Knights of Columbus Hall. Mr. Carlson, a veteran of the United States Army from 1968 to 1972, served in Vietnam and received
the Bronze Star. With the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244, he serves in the Color Guard and is the Post’s parade organizer and notary. In addition, Mr. Carlson is an active member of the Strathmore Civic Association where he is currently treasurer. A veteran who served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970, Mr. Santo is a former 10-year Commander and current Financial Officer of the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244. Mr. Santo is also a
liaison with the SailAhead Program, a therapeutic sailing platform that helps PTSD-suffering veterans and brings awareness to Post Traumatic Stress and Veteran Suicide. “It was a privilege to recognize Ken Carlson and Bob Santo, two outstanding and deserving veterans, as Legislative District 17 Seniors of the Year for 2020,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank them for their past service to this nation and their continued service to our community.”
11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Large school buses are not equipped with seat belts, but that doesn’t compromise their ability to transport students safely to and from school. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that school buses are designed differently than passenger cars and light trucks. As a result of their unique design, as well as their size and weight, school buses distribute crash forces differently from other vehicles, utilizing a different kind of safety restraint system that is effective at keeping passengers safe. This system is known as “compartmentalization.” The NHTSA says the interiors of large buses protect children without seat belts because of closely spaced seats that have energyabsorbing seat backs. This compartmentalization will keep children from being forced out of their seats during an impact. However, in the United States, small school buses, or those with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, must be equipped with lap or lap/shoulder belts in all seating positions.

Help Feed Sweetbriar’s Resident Animals!!! ANIMAL FOOD DRIVE Sweetbriar Nature Center Animal Food Drive is ongoing this summer!!! The facility is in need of donations of fruits and vegetables for the many animals rehabilitating in their care. Most needed items are unsalted nuts and non-perishables, baby food, Cheerios, tuna in water, oat bran and shelled nuts. In addition, Sweetbriar has an Amazon Smile account set up (link on their website https://www. sweetbriarnc.org/) with a wish list of items most needed. Please drop off supplies on the porch of the Sweetbriar Nature Center at 62 Eckernkamp Drive, Smithtown. The main house and indoor areas remain closed for the time being. Sweetbriar Nature Center, has served the community for 50 years, has been severely affected
