The American Red Cross is facing a looming shortage of the blood types most needed by patients and is calling on eligible donors with O negative, B negative and A negative blood to give now to prevent an emergency situation. Blood donation appointments can be quickly and easily scheduled by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood. org or calling 1.800.RED CROSS. Overall blood donations in the Red Cross New York-Penn Blood Services Region have been approximately 3,876 fewer per month in June and July this year than the previous 10 months of the year. When demand for the most needed types begins to outpace donations, the Red Cross alerts donors to help restock the shelves. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients with any blood type. Types B negative and A

negative can be transfused to Rh positive or negative patients. Eligible donors are encouraged to donate double red cells – a process where two units of red cells are collected while most of the plasma and platelets are returned to the donor – where available. “Summer blood shortages are not uncommon, but they can be prevented when generous volunteers roll up their sleeves to help save lives,” said Nick Gehrig, senior communications director, Red Cross Blood Services. “Many donors have already given this summer. We’re now asking donors who haven’t donated, and those who are eligible again, to make an appointment to give now to help ensure blood products are available for patients.” Platelets and type AB plasma also needed Platelet donors and those with type AB blood are also continually needed to help ensure patients receive the lifesaving blood products

they need. Platelets – a key clotting component of blood often needed by cancer patients, surgical patients and bone narrow recipients – must be transfused within five days of donation, so donations are constantly needed. Donors with type AB blood are urged to give blood or platelets to restock the plasma supply. Type AB donors have the universal plasma type, which can be given to patients of all blood types. Individuals who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to donate again and help patients like an expectant mother at a Red Cross-supported hospital who is currently receiving nearly 100 units of blood products a week until she delivers. Her need alone could add up to 1,100 units. How to donate blood The free Blood Donor App – available in app stores by searching for American Red Cross or by texting BLOODAPP to 90999 – not

only makes appointment scheduling easy, but donors can also access their digital donor card and be notified when their donation is distributed to a hospital. Donors can also visit redcrossblood. org or call 1.800.RED CROSS (1.800.733.2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. The Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts Knowledge Bowl Team placed second in the nation for the second consecutive year at the National American Culinary Federation (ACF) Conference Knowledge Bowl in Orlando, Florida last week. Suffolk competed against three other regional winning teams from across the United States. The competition is based on a student’s culinary knowledge in a Jeopardy format.

Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun McKay commended the team for its impressive showing. “Our students put their knowledge and skills to the test in a highly competitive format,” McKay said. “I congratulate our students and coaches. The Knowledge Bowl Team is an inspiration to us and indicative of the excellent training and education provided by our culinary arts program.”

North Shore-LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), will host Long Island’s Seventh Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 26th, at 10 a.m., rain or shine, to promote awareness and education. Proceeds from the walk will benefit North ShoreLIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF to support essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of

A First Impression, Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Say what you will about the drawbacks of social media, the tendency to over-share, the impersonal nature of “connecting” remotely, but, sometimes, such an avenue can prove vital in reconnecting with those we may have crossed paths with in a previous stage of life. Such has been the case through the years, as Facebook “friends” have accumulated faster than my ability to keep up with them, at least in any sort of personal, meaningful way. What began as an attempt

to build a somewhat professional network of contacts in the journalism industry quickly morphed into an avalanche of high school and college friends, fellow dance students and work colleagues. Somehow lost in the mix were those old acquaintances that you, quite simply, just never got to know well enough to develop any sort of deeper friendship. You may have traveled in neighboring circles, shared common life experiences, but failed to make the leap beyond the preconceived notions that often cloud our youth.

First impressions last a lifetime, or so they say; but the advantage of adulthood is that, sometimes, we have the presence of mind to take a step back, take stock of the situation and reevaluate. Such is one of the benefits of social media – second chances. The opportunity to get to know someone, truly, is a rare gift that should be accepted, and savored. On July 28th, more than 20 swimmers and kayakers took part in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim. Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident who started the swim as a way to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) and awareness about the disease, spearheaded the swim. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. The participants started out at Asharoken Beach and swam across the Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of approximately three miles. Before taking to the water, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, ADRC and Mr. Proctor thanked the participants for their support in fighting this insidious disease. The first swimmer to complete the course

was Andrea O’Brien, who finished in just over an hour. “This year’s swim signifies a very strong commitment to our cause by all of these men and women, many of whom have been touched by Alzheimer’s,” Ms. MalackRagona said. “Sadly, the number of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease continues to grow. Demand for training, programs, services and referral sources is at an all-time high. This group of dedicated individuals helps to create awareness and raise funds needed to provide a variety of resources for Long Island families.” Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center - which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton - is the only local Alzheimer’s disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to fund local research and provide hands-on support

and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products. More than 200 teenagers are enjoying active evenings by taking part in Summer Youth Connection, a fiveevening-a-week program the Town of Huntington is presenting with Suffolk County in collaboration with a variety of corporate and not-for-profit partners and volunteers. The free program, which is held at Walt Whitman High School from 5 to 9 p.m., is open to all but is aimed specifically to provide educational and recreational activity for youth in Huntington Station free of charge. Activities range from basketball and golf to creative writing and photography and robotics. Summer Youth Connection is the brainchild of Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards, who modeled it after a similar program Suffolk County ran last summer in Brentwood. Councilwoman Edwards enlisted Suffolk County as a partner, and lined up the many sponsors, including: the South Huntington School District; the Huntington Opportunity Resource Center Leadership Council; the Suffolk County Police Department; the Huntington Manor Fire Department; the Huntington Community First Aid Squad; the Huntington Ecumenical Ministers Alliance; Tri-CYA; REACH-CYA; David W Parker Lodge #72 and Chapter 64, Order of the Eastern Star; and the Huntington branch of the NAACP. Corporate sponsors include the Park Shore Science

A multitude of people gathered recently to hear the Queen tribute band Almost Queen play at the Nesconset Gazebo. As always, the community showed up with goods to donate to Long Island Cares and Operation Care Package to help those in need in the

community and to support our troops who sacrifice everything for this country. In order to kick off the concert, Alessio Farina did the honors of singing our National Anthem. Alessio is a student of Brooklyn College training to be an opera singer, and did a beautiful rendition of The

Star Spangled Banner. Almost Queen was a crowd favorite, and was greatly enjoyed by those who braved the heat and humidity to listen to them play. As always, they were enthused to play before the packed crowd in Nesconset.

Reception Held Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) held a “Meet the Artists” reception at b.j. spoke gallery in Huntington on Saturday, July 11th. The reception honored artists participating in their fine art and art therapy programs who were invited to exhibit their artwork at the gallery. The exhibit, “Breaking Boundaries 2015” ran throughout the month of July. FREE, a leader in the field of human services dedicated to helping individuals of all

abilities realize their full potential and prevail over life’s challenges, believes that Art Therapy provides a powerful means for healing and communication for anyone, but especially for people who find it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings through spoken words alone. There are 30 artworks created by FREE artists dispersed among b.j. spoke gallery member’s work to create “Breaking Boundaries 2015” in which the art speaks for itself and viewers won’t

know, at first glance, whose work is hanging - a gallery members or FREE artists; The exhibition intends to encourage the viewer to ask the question, “What if there is no dis-ability, only differing styles of self-expression?” This will combat stigma as it simultaneously opens the door for people with disabilities to participate more fully in a community setting while entering the world of art commerce, as works were available for sale.
