The Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education has appointed Maureen Hull as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and David Shanahan as the Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics. Mrs. Hull has served the students of the Port Jefferson School District for the last 10 years, first as Director of English language arts and Social Studies, K-12, and more recently as the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. In her latter role, she was responsible for the implementation of several programs, including the Columbia Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Program, English as a New Language requirements, and several AP level course enhancements. She also presented new course proposals and other initiatives to the Board of Education and was the lead evaluator and goal-setter for building principals and coordinator for K-12 staff development. She chaired the district’s Curriculum Development Council, as well as committees for Academic Intervention Services, and Professional Development. Mrs. Hull’s duties also included resolving parent concerns, and she takes pride in her emphasis on strong parent-teacher communication. “I will work hard to support the priorities and goals
of the district and ensure an excellent educational experience for the students, families and staff of the Elwood School District,” Mrs. Hull said. Prior to Port Jefferson, Mrs. Hull served as an Elementary Principal in the Comsewogue School District and an Assistant Principal in the Harborfields School District. She also directed band for the Harborfields and Amityville school districts. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Bard College, her Master’s in Music Education and her Professional Diploma in Educational Administration from LIU Post. Mrs. Hull is currently completing her doctorate studies at St. John’s University. She is focusing her work on Mindfulness. David Shanahan arrived in Elwood in 1995 and has taught Health and Physical Education at John Glenn High School throughout that time. During his tenure with the district, he has also compiled an impressive resume as the head coach of the varsity football team with two Long Island championships, 12 Big 4 titles and six appearances in the County finals. Shanahan also coached middle school and JV lacrosse, as well as winter track. In addition, he served on the district committees for Health, Safety and Project Adventure. “I look forward to working with the teachers, students, parents and administration to develop additional opportunities for students and continue to improve our program,” said Shanahan. Prior to Elwood, Shanahan taught in the Sewanhaka Central High School District and served as a running backs coach for both LIU Post’s and Stony Brook University’s football programs. He earned his Bachelor’s

Well, dear readers, the calendar pages have just flown on by, landing on August – my Human’s birthday month, and, more importantly, my 18-month adoption anniversary. Seeing as I didn’t come with an official birth certificate, no one can be quite certain of my precise age, but we’ll assume I’ve been flitting around for at least a solid two years at this point. Not too shabby. My fins, on the other hand… Ah, but enough about me. My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.
On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him?? Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my flakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand. It’s much faster that way. Plus,

Well, unless I happen to be napping between the leaves of my plant – then I occasionally come across a snack to munch on. I like to switch up my bedtime spot depending upon my mood. Currently, I can most often be found lying on top of the filter in the corner. I love to see the look on my Human’s face as she desperately searches for me. As if I could burrow down into the gravel and disappear… or can I? Such is the life of a fish. Eating, sleeping and plotting new activities to consume my days. I am quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Now, as for my upcoming birthday… is it too late to ask for a new Squeegee?

The Art League of Long Island is pleased to announce the addition of teaching artist Lucas Sheridan to its roster of outstanding faculty members. Lucas Sheridan has been tapped to lead teens in the Summer PreCollege Portfolio as they fully immerse themselves in the creative process and build their portfolios for college. In the program, students experience professional studio practices as they develop the skills required to create a successful portfolio consisting of observational and figure drawing, painting, mixed media projects and additional mediums. Summer Pre-College Portfolio is one of three programs offered under the umbrella of the Art League of Long Island’s Summer Design Program. The newly launched Architecture and Spatial Design program and Fashion FUNdamentals program introduce teens to these exciting fields in art and design. A gallery exhibit featuring works produced by the students participating in the entire Summer Design Program will take place August 13th through August 21st. The gallery exhibit concludes with an artist’s reception and fashion show on August 21st from 1 to 3 p.m. Mr. Sheridan has been teaching at the
Baccalaureate School of Global Education as an IB Studio Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer since 2011. Prior to the Baccalaureate school he was an Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer at the NYC Lab School. Sheridan earned his BFA in Drawing and Painting at Syracuse University and his MA in Art Education at Brooklyn College. His recent students have applied to and been accepted to a wide range of schools including: Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, The School of Visual Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, Parsons School of Design, and Yale. In his personal work, he is fascinated by artists who successfully capture and amplify the perceived world by exploring the areas between representation and abstraction. Sheridan resides in Malverne with his wife and children. The Art League of Long Island is a not-for-profit visual arts organization that offers classes and workshops for children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels. The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery hosts a dozen exhibits per year, featuring contemporary works by many local artists. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on weekends 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art League is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills. Summer Arts Festival The Annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival’s closing week is Tuesday, August 9th through Sunday, August 14th.
