H.E.R.O.E.S. Program Announced County’s commitment to our veterans is long standing and undeniable. Under County Executive Bellone’s leadership that commitment has continued to grow in meaningful and innovative ways. The collaboration between TPVA and VSA is a shining example of how governments, at all levels, can refine governmental operations to maximize effectiveness in the area of veterans services. Understanding, pro-actively identifying and applying innovative methods to support and assist veterans in a variety of ways is the most effective way of ensuring they have access to the tools for success that they have earned and so richly deserve. Last month, County Executive Bellone announced the creation of a Veterans Docket Day to offer honorably discharged or current veterans who have traffic, parking or red light camera citations pending before TPVA to participate in a special conference with a prosecutor. These conferences are held prior to the general public and will be provided a lengthier time to understand in greater detail the circumstances involving each case. Veterans receive consideration based upon their military status, medical status, and their financial situation. This may include those dealing

with post-transition issues such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In partnership with EAC Network, the Suffolk County Police Department and Stony Brook University Hospital, Suffolk County TPVA offers a number of diversion programs have proven to be highly successful in reducing unsafe driving. Diversion programs are offered to defendants who have certain charges or who are in jeopardy of losing their license. These programs seek to modify driving behaviors and return a safer driver to the road. Each of the four programs offer violation specific education, instruction and use “Reality Based” presentations aimed at modifying the behavior that brought the defendant to traffic court. The H.E.R.O.E.S. combines each of these four programs into one full day of education that also includes a New York State Defensive Driving Program. In the last two years, over 2,500 people have attended one of the TPVA’s diversion programs, and only nine people have returned to Traffic Court with a new traffic violation. Drive Safe Program TPVA offers a Drive Safe Program for individuals who are speeding, failing to follow seat belt laws and for districted while driving. The three-hour program discusses responsibility, the motorists’ actions and

consequences of these actions. Included in this program are presentations by a SCPD Highway Patrol Officer; Dr. James A. Vosswinkle, Chief Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care doctor at Stony Brook University Hospital; health Educators, an attorney and a Judge. Topics include, but will not be limited to the judiciary system and occupant protection, which include seat belt use, excessive speed,m passenger distraction, cell phone usage, text messaging, loud music, night driving, peer pressure, overconfidence and other issues impacting young, inexperienced drivers. This program is offered as part of a Pre-Plea. The original charge may be reduced and/or points may be reduced based on their participation in the program including a Pre- and- Post-quiz. The participants also receive handouts to take home that are available in English and Spanish. After completion of the program, participants receive a certificate of completion and staff will submit a class update, including their scores, to TPVA. Distracted Driver Program According to NYS GTSC, any time a driver’s attention is drawn away from the task of driving in a safe and defensive manner, it can be labeled as distracted

driving. These distractions can be personal, external or internal. Personal distractions can occur when the driver is impaired by daydreaming, alcohol, drugs, fatigue or unsafe practices like reading, writing, shaving, applying makeup or using electronic devices such as computers, cell phones, iPods or GPS navigation systems. Internal distractions occur inside the car, caused by passengers, animals or objects inside the vehicle. External distractions occur outside the car like other motorists, inclement weather, deteriorated road conditions, or even the scenery. SCOPE Second Chances in Occupant Protection for Everyone Program According to New York State law, motorists who receive a citation for not having their child properly restrained in a motor vehicle - either by using a Child Safety restraint or seat belt - have the option to voluntarily attend a three-hour diversion program. The Second Chances in Occupant Protection for Everyone program, or SCOPE, is an educational class, for parents and caregivers focusing on misuses and injury prevention. The structure of this class is designed to improve the use of safety restraints for all motor vehicle occupants and promote safer driving practices

through education on topics such as seat belt safety, seat belt laws, airbag impact, proper installation and use of child passenger safety restraints. As part of a pre-plea, participants voluntarily agree to enroll and complete this program. The Initial charge may be reduced and/or points may be reduced based on the individual’s participation in the program including a Pre and Post-quiz. The participants also receive handouts to take home (available in English and Spanish). After the individual completes the program, they receive a certificate of completion and the EAC staff will then submit to TPVA the attendance sheet, a class update including participation as well as the scores. If the individual needs a seat and meet the eligibility requirements, they will be referred to our SAFETSTART distribution program. Unlicensed/Improperly Licensed Driver Program EAC and TPVA have jointly developed an eight-hour program that provides education and risk awareness to motorists charged with the unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. This program includes a sixhour drivers safety course that is approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently announced the Help Enable Recovery and Offer Enhanced Safety, or H.E.R.O.E.S. program, as the latest addition to the first-in-the-nation Suffolk County Veterans Traffic Court. The court is the latest innovation established under the purview of the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency, or TPVA in conjunction with the Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency. “Whether on the local, state or federal level, we owe it to our veterans to aid them in every way possible during their transition back into civilian life and beyond,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “This program will make real change for veterans by providing them with the help and direction that they need to maintain their overall independence and contribute to the society they fought to protect.” Paul Margiotta, Director of the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency, said “The debt owed to veterans can never be repaid. This small gesture by the Agency is to offer veterans personalized services that both provide assistance to our service men and women and safe driver training.” Thomas Ronayne, Director of the Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency (VSA), said: Suffolk

Exploring the Wizarding World It was a magical week for the 20 Harborfields students who took part in Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation’s first “Harry Potter Camp: Bringing Magic to Muggles,” from July 24th-27th. The new four-day camp was part of HACEF’s Summer Programs, which allows students in the district to enroll in a variety of different camps that fit their interests over the summer. Run by instructor Dyan Aronowsky, “Harry Potter Camp: Magic to Muggles,” focused on the beloved books by J. K. Rowling. Students in grades three through six, had the opportunity to take part in the camp and put themselves in the magical world of Harry Potter.

During the first day, each camper was placed in one of the four houses from the books – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. Just like in the story, the Sorting Hat picked their fate as they were assigned a house. Over the course of the four days, the campers were encouraged to dress the part as a Hogwarts student and participated in a variety of fun activities that correlated with the books. They decorated their own trunks which they filled with their creations throughout the week, produced potions and learned magic tricks. In addition, the campers constructed wands, created maps, made dragon embryos out of slime, played match games which

tested their Harry Potter knowledge, took part in scavenger hunts and even played Quidditch outside. Quidditch was a favorite part for many of the campers as they enjoyed riding their broomsticks made out of pool noodles and competing for points toward their house. Just like in the books, the campers could gain points for accomplishing different tasks or behaving properly. The list included listening to others, punctuality, respectful behavior, helping others, cleaning up, volunteering, camp spirit and participation. On the final day of camp, the house of Gryffindor was crowned the winner of the Hogwarts House Cup, followed by Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.

Continued From 3 Regardless if an individual possesses a license, every participant that completes this program will receive a certificate issued by American Safety INC. Participants are also introduced to a Suffolk County Police Officer who will speak to the participants about operating a vehicle without a license and law enforcement’s role. This program includes a presentation from an attorney who provides a brief overview of legal representation.

Participants are also introduced to the MV44.1 and MV 44 DMV forms – otherwise known as Proof of Identity and the application for Permit, Driver’s License and Non–Driver ID Card, respectively. Some participants may even be eligible to apply for a Non– drivers ID card or a license and are directed to review the information and go to their local DMV office. Through a specialized conference offered for veterans in the H.E.R.O.E.S. program, participants will spend more time being heard,

with an anticipated 10-15 minutes being allowed for each conference with a prosecutor. The goal of the Veterans Traffic Court ultimately is to provide and facilitate a complete avenue of reform and assistance. This program differs from a drug courts within a criminal court venue as the Traffic Court’s program will help resolve infractions which may be the underlying cause of the criminal charge, i.e. aggravated unlicensed operation “VTL Section 511.” If a motorist is

are some perks you simply can’t put a price on. As often as I think I am paying way too much to live in my one bedroom apartment, when I take a look at the pristine grounds surrounding me, I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. Nearly five years later, my little haven is quite completely furnished, and I have accumulated enough seasonal decor to last a lifetime, maybe two. Closet space… well, that’s another matter entirely. To think I have managed to fill every square inch of available storage in such a short span of time; well, it’s really pretty impressive (said she sheepishly). First item on the autumn “To Do” list: purge those closets, drawers and unreachable shelves of anything unnecessary. Consolidate, donate; whatever it takes to create a little more

breathing room. And stay away from those sales, more importantly, or we’ll be right back in the same boat a few months down the line. Perhaps my favorite space of all, though, is my little outdoor deck. While the view consists mainly of a parking lot and other surrounding apartments, I have made it my mission to fill the area with plants in every corner, twinkly white lights, solar garden ornaments - and of course my aqua-colored Adirondack chairs, the perfect accessory for all seasons. Many a summer day has been spent lounging here, listening to the sounds of birds chirping in the nearby tree, squirrels scurrying to and fro and watching the sun’s glow rise and fall as the hours pass. Living on Long Island… it ain’t for everyone, to be sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Long Island Cruizin’ For a Cure will hold its 12th annual Car Show at 1400 Old Country Road in Westbury, a new location for the nonprofit organization. The show will be Sunday, September 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is the only car show on the East Coast to offer men free onsite PSA screening tests for early detection of Prostate Cancer. A special program at noon will highlight the success of the nonprofit car show and the presentation of a check to Winthrop-University Hospital for prostate cancer research. Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure promises to be a family-centered fun day. Back by popular demand will be STARDUST and the Food Court. Free features include a KIDZ FUN ZONE with radio controlled model race car track. Cruizin’ For A Cure, organized by Prostate Cancer survivors and community volunteers in 2006, is dedicated to raising funds for Prostate Cancer research, education and early detection. Since its founding Cruizin’ has donated more than $120,000 to WinthropUniversity Hospital and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for research. A huge crowd will be attracted once again to the Lee Iaccoca Foundation Award winning car show, where more than 450 cars and vehicles are expected to be exhibited. Sponsors include Champion Motors, AutoQuip, Alure Home Improvement, Rallye Motor Group, Robert Chevrolet and Trinity Solar, with more sponsors to come. There will be a dedicated tent where the PSA Prostate Cancer screening tests will be conducted FREE by Winthrop-University Hospital. Volunteers wearing grey “Survivor” LI Cruizin’ t-shirts will be encouraging men at the show to take advantage of the onsite free blood-

screening tests. To date over 3,000 men have been screened at Cruizin’ For A Cure car shows and 148 of them with elevated PSA readings have been referred to their physicians for follow-up. “Last year 345 free PSA screening tests were conducted. Once again we plan to make a concerted effort to encourage men to take advantage of the free screening test. It will be a fabulous day with exhibitors, a KIDS FUN ZONE, entertainment, vendors and sponsors. This will be our first year at the 1400 Old Country location, a slightly smaller location but vehicles will be parked on cement rather than dirt – a plus for the show participants. “Our volunteers, many of whom are Prostate Cancer survivors like me, are finalizing plans for a show that will delight people of all ages. The show’s popularity has been sustained because it offers something for everyone, not just car enthusiasts,” said Sandy Kane, Chair and Founder of LI Cruizin’ For A Cure Car Show. Preparing for Kindergarten For its second year in a row, the Northport-East Northport School District welcomed incoming kindergarten students into the Summer Reading Program at Pulaski Road Elementary School. The 20-day program, which is typically geared at students in kindergarten through eighth grade, was

created to help students in the district strengthen their reading and writing abilities. For the class of 12 pre-kindergarten students, the program focuses on preparing them for the kindergarten level in September. The small group, led by teacher Jamie Landry, has been engaged in various

multisensory activities this summer such as rice tables, which helps the students better understand letters. In addition, they have participated in activities that focus on school readiness skills, language concepts and pre-reading strategies.

Summer Reading Program Pulaski Road Elementary School in the NorthportEast Northport School District has been bustling with students from prekindergarten through eighth grade in the district’s Summer Reading Program. The 20-day program allows students to better prepare for the new school year by taking part in fun, educational games and activities that promote literacy. Students meet for two hours a day from Monday through Thursday and are placed with a teacher who gives them what they need to strengthen their reading skills. The day consists of small group instruction, which allows for personalized attention

and engaging handson and multisensory activities. The students utilize centers which they rotate through, to explore different avenues of learning and participate in creative educational games such as fishing for words and bowling. In addition, the program encompasses technology into the learning environment by providing reading exercises on the SMART Board and personal computers for students to learn through the educational platform, Compass Learning Odyssey. District Coordinator of Reading & AIS Tara Gaiss and Program Principal Scott Pellegrino have run

the program for the past five years and watched it evolve into a beneficial outlet for students to challenge themselves to succeed. “The Summer Reading Program engages students in small group, multisensory reading activities with the goal of not only reducing summer loss but closing the gap in the specific areas of challenge for each student,” said Gaiss. “As part of our pre-summer goal setting process, we take great effort to pinpoint the specific areas of challenge and then work for 20 days to target these skills in creative and exciting lessons.”

Summer Scrapbooking Skills Students in grades four and up recently put their creativity to the test in the “Crop, Paper, Scissors” Summer Program sponsored by the Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation at Harborfields High School. Facilitated by HACEF Camp Director Karin Fey, “Crop, Paper, Scissors” is broken into two four-day sessions throughout the

summer. The first session began on July 24th, allowing students to learn new and creative ways to showcase old photographs through scrapbooking and innovative craft ideas. Fey, a former magazine editor and craft stylist, taught students the proper way to mount, layer and crop photos. In addition, the campers made cards and took part in a daily “Mystery

Craft,” where they had the freedom to bring their ideas to life. Walking for Awareness Two patients treated for potentially life-threatening brain aneurysms will tell their stories when the Brain Aneurysm Center at Northwell Health’s Neuroscience Institute, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), host Long Island’s 9th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 23rd. Proceeds from the walk will benefit Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF, helping support essential research into how to help prevent cases of ruptured aneurysms. The walk will feature two women – Terry Bongiorno, 53, from New Hyde Park, NY and Kathleen Smith, 63, from Westbury – who will share their accounts of early diagnosis and treatment. Hundreds of walkers – including brain aneurysm survivors, their families and friends – are expected to attend the fun-filled

event. Doctors, nurses and staff members from Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center will also be on hand to show their support for the many patients they have treated over the years. Among those who will be attending are David Chalif, MD, and Avi Setton, MD, co-directors of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm,” said Dr. Chalif. “The symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation.” Four years ago, Ms. Bongiorno experienced severe headaches and knew at the time that it could be a sign of a brain aneurysm. Her mother passed away of a brain aneurysm when Ms. Bongiorno was a toddler. Family members told Ms. Bongiorno that

her mother complained of severe headaches prior to the fatal aneurysm. Decades later, when Ms. Bongiorno started to experience headaches herself, she knew that she should get screened. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a brain aneurysm, and while it was small and would normally be left alone to be monitored over time, she was told to see a specialist because of her family history. Upon reviewing the MRI scan, Dr. Chalif explained that due to her family history, the aneurysm should be closely monitored for any changes in development. Ms. Bongiorno went for annual follow-ups over the next few years, but it wasn’t until August 2016 when growth was detected through a computed axial tomography (CAT) scan. Dr. Chalif clipped the aneurysm, cutting off blood flow to the artery in an October 2016 procedure. Clipping a brain

aneurysm is a surgical procedure performed on both ruptured and unruptured aneurysms. The neurosurgeon works through a small opening in the skull, and once the aneurysm is located with the operating microscope, the neurosurgeon eliminates blood flow by placing a clip across the aneurysm’s base – allowing blood to flow normally elsewhere in the brain. Ms. Bongiorno has no neurological deficits from the surgery and has since encouraged her own children, ages 19 and 21, to also get screened. Family history also led Ms. Smith to get screened. Her sister died from a brain aneurysm nearly two decades ago. This past summer, Ms. Smith’s primary care physician recommended she get screened due to family history. A magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) was performed, which revealed a brain aneurysm. She was referred to Dr. Chalif, and upon

reviewing the MRA images, Dr. Chalif said she was a good candidate to receive endovascular treatment with coils and a stent – another, more minimally invasive procedure to treat the brain aneurysm. Ms. Smith underwent an endovascular coiling and stenting procedure in January, performed by Dr. Setton. Coiling a brain aneurysm requires the insertion of a catheter into the femoral artery in the leg, which is then navigated through the blood vessels into the brain where the aneurysm is located. Soft platinum coils and a stent are inserted through the catheter and deployed in the aneurysm. The coils conform to the shape of the aneurysm, fill the sac and block blood flow to the aneurysm to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing. “Approximately 5 percent of brain aneurysms are linked to a family history,” said Dr. Chalif. “But due to the decisive actions of Ms. Bongiorno and Ms. Smith seeking medical

attention because of their family history, their lives were saved due to early detection. By sharing their stories at our walk this year, they will undoubtedly help us spread awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm and the importance of getting screened if you have a family history. We are extremely grateful to both of them and they should be commended for their extraordinary courage and strength.” Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh, NY. The start time is 10 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 through September 9, $30 afterward. Entry fee includes the cost of parking and snacks. School and from there went directly to his weekly scout troop meeting. Mr. Martin said, “I was in shock when I learned about being the selected winner and that it’s the Strupore family who makes the final decision. I’m overwhelmed and thrilled to be the winner in 2017.” He is an active Boy Scout having joined scouting later than most having never been involved as a Cub Scout. Mr. Martin earned his Eagle Scout rank in Troop 406 (Melville/ Huntington) on April 25th, 2016 and was presented with his bronze palm during his court of honor ceremony. His Eagle Scout community service project was to create a “Reading Garden” which consisted of three benches and a small garden at the Birchwood Intermediate School which he attended from 3rd through 5th grade. He also

The Northport-East Northport School District’s Summer Music and the Arts Program kicked off on July 11th for its fourweek program of learning and exploration. With its highest enrollment to date, this year’s program has marked new opportunities for students in grades 3-11, whether they are just starting a new instrument, exploring their creative abilities or strengthening their music skills at the intermediate level. The Northport-East Northport Summer Music and the Arts Program was first established in 1957, specifically for music students. Throughout the years, the program expanded its offerings to allow students to sign up for a variety of different sessions in the art department as well. This includes a PreAdvanced Placement Drawing and Painting class and a Pre-International Baccalaureate Art class for Northport High School students. Under the direction of Program Director Michael Susinno and Director of Fine and Performing Arts Dr. Izzet Mergen,

the program expanded to accommodate more students this summer by providing a new half-day schedule where students could take part in different sessions and then be shuttled to the district’s summer recreation program. The program saw a 53 percent increase in enrollment this summer with the implementation of the new half-day schedule. With most students in grades 3-7 participating, the program offers 12 beginner classes which are available to help introduce instruments to students and 12 intermediate classes which gives students the ability to receive more instruction and personalized attention. In addition, there are six art classes and one dance class offered as well. A number of current faculty members from the district serve as instructors, as well as Northport High School graduates, retired staff members and other New York State Certified teachers from outside the district. An additional ukulele and guitar teacher was also added to the program this summer due to popular demand.

Technology has been utilized by many of the instructors as part of the learning experience. Many of the classes encompass SmartMusic, an educational platform that allows the sheet music to be displayed on the SmartBoard with their instruments connected. The students receive instant feedback as they play with green or red markings displayed when a note is played correctly or incorrectly. Susinno, a NorthportEast Northport graduate, has taken the program to heart due to his involvement since 1988. “Past participation as a student, as a high school volunteer, as a teaching assistant, as a teacher and now as the liaison helps me to see the program through the students’ eyes as well as through all of the staff roles as well,” said Susinno. “When Bob Krueger began the program in 1957, he set a wonderful wave in motion. I can only hope that he’d be proud of the program as it is today and that he’s smiling from his current concert podium!”

Food Drive a Success On Saturday, Assemblyman Andrew Raia hosted his Summer Food Drive to End Hunger. This food drive is one of a series that Raia and community leaders will be holding throughout the summer. The food drive hosted by Raia was a resounding success and resulted in an unprecedented 1,010 pounds of food for the needy. “During a time when food drive donations are historically low, the Summer Food Drive to End Hunger serves as a significant tool in meeting

our vision of a hunger-free Long Island,” said Raia. “No individual should have to go to bed with an empty stomach, and it is our duty to take care of our neighbors and those less fortunate.” According to Long Island Cares, a food bank agency and emergency food provider in Suffolk and Nassau counties, 65,000 Long Islanders receive emergency food each week. Food banks continue to be the most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69 percent

of the food distributed by pantries, 39 percent of the food distributed by kitchens and 45 percent of the food distributed by shelters. “We are very grateful to Assemblyman Raia for his participation and recognizing the truth of hunger on Long Island, and for his decision to stand and act on behalf of those in need,” said William Gonyou, Community Events and Food Drive Manager of Long Island Cares.

Congratulations to Troop 406’s Andrew Martin, the 2017 Anthony J. Stupore Memorial Scout Scholarship recipient. The scholarship is awarded annually to one outstanding Suffolk County Council (BSA) Scout in recognition of their community service, leadership skills, and Scout Spirit. Eagle Scout Martin was recognized with the award during the annual William H.Sample and Anthony J. Stupore Memorial “Good Scout” golf outing on June 19th, held at the Huntington Country Club. As the only recipient of the Anthony J. Stupore Memorial Scout Scholarship, he learned he was the winner after a message was left on his home voice mail. Coincidentally, he was attending his own Senior Awards Night at Walt Whitman High

Stupore Memorial Scout Scholarship is awarded annually to one Boy Scout who meets the criteria of being a registered Boy Scout, active in his unit, a senior in high school, and accepted by either a two or four year college. Mr. Martin had to submit an essay on how he had demonstrated leadership skills in Scouting and in his personal life, describe how he had exhibited involvement in community service, and tell about what lesson(s) he had learned to help him throughout life. In addition, he had to submit letters of recommendation from his Scoutmaster and from a high school teacher or guidance counselor. The Anthony J. Stupore Memorial Scout Scholarship Award is for $1,000 and is renewable for up to 3 years based on maintaining a 2.75 or better GPA after his freshman year and a 3.0 GPA or better after each succeeding year.

As part of the NorthportEast Northport School District’s Community Services Summer Recreation Program, students in grades 5-7 put their creativity to the test in the Video Game Design course held at East Northport Middle School this summer. Led by Northport Middle School technology teacher Christopher Smith, the introductory course

allowed students to design, develop and program simple 2-D games and personalize them to their liking. Students picked which time frame worked best with their summer schedule with four weeks of the course being offered. Each course took place for four days from Monday through Thursday for two hours. Students gathered in one of the school’s

computer rooms where they were taught the basics of computer programming to create their own characters, enemies, power-ups and levels to place into their games. They worked at their own pace and added sounds and background music to their creations. At the end of each of the courses, the students took home their games to share with family and friends.

The two main

visionaries of this 12-piece explosion of love - Brother Joscephus (Dix Hills native David Mendelsohn) and his eccentric cohort, the Right Reverend Dean Dawg (Dean Fransen) - dip heavily into a gumbo rich with the powerful rhythms of New Orleans, old school funk and soul, classic rock and a healthy dose of feelgood gospel music. Since 2007, “BroJo” has been on a musical mission to make the world a more righteous place. When you combine the music and the message with a one-of-a-kind, highenergy stage spectacle, you got yourself one hell of a revolution on your hands! All performances during the Summer Arts Festival are free and held on the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park, Huntington. The festival

runs from June 25th through August 14th. All performances begin at 8:30 p.m. unless it is a Tuesday evening because the “Family Series” events begin at 7:30 p.m. The Summer Arts Festival is produced by the Town of Huntington and presented by the Huntington Arts Council. Clay Creations Students from the Northport-East Northport School District recently got their hands dirty during the district’s Community Services Summer Recreation “Art – Clay” program. The 13 students from grades 3-8, joined the class to explore their creative abilities under the

guidance of instructors Thuy Pham and Christine LaRosa. The weeklong program allowed the class to learn the different techniques of working with clay. Through guided instruction, the students created various types of vessels such as bowls,

plates, vases and boxes. In addition, they worked on a project focused on their favorite foods in which they sculpted a plate out of clay and molded different types of food to place on top of it. The students then had the option to paint their pieces with acrylic paint.

Employee Excellence Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and Legislator Sarah Anker presented the Legislature’s Employee Excellence Award to Carol Clasen of Shoreham, Administrator I in the Department of Civil Service/Human Resources, at the July 25th meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature in Hauppauge. In his nomination letter Suffolk County Personnel Director Alan Schneider writes, “Carol has risen to a level that I can truly say is excellent in every facet of her performance, personality and character. She is a wonderful asset to this department and to the county.” Carol began her career with the Civil Service Department in 2001 as a Clerk Typist. Since then she has moved through the promotional lines to be the Administrator I in charge of the support staff of the Examinations Division, overseeing the processing of all applications for the competitive examinations

that are used for hiring in the County’s 26 departments and 244 outside jurisdictions. Her responsibilities include overseeing the staff that receives all internet and hard copy applications, maintains the associated data base created to facilitate exam administration, schedules candidates, sends out notifications of building and room assignments and responds to related public inquiries. In addition, she processes special accommodation request from disabled candidates, notifies Veterans of any documentation needed to assure inclusion of Veteran’s credits, ensures adequate monitoring coverage at exam sites and schedules any required psychological and keyboard qualifying examinations. “As her legislative representative, I am proud to recognize Carol for her dedication and commitment as an

Administrator I in Suffolk County’s Department of Civil Service/Human Resources. Carol’s genuine personality and professional focus is greatly appreciated,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory added, “Carol maintains statistics required for budgeting and various reports, and can be relied on to be an efficient, conscientious and cheerful presence performing a vital function in the examinations division. She is an outstanding employee in every way and a cheerful presence who performs a vital function for Suffolk County government to run smoothly. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that

many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.
