Summer Arts Festival Festival is produced by the Town of Huntington and presented by the Huntington Arts Council. Additional support is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the County of Suffolk and Canon U.S.A., Inc. All regularly scheduled performances take place at the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park and start
at 8 p.m. The exception is Tuesday Family Night which begins at 7 p.m. We also have a FREE fun craft available on Tuesdays for children at the HAC Craft table starting at 6 p.m. All performances are rain or shine. 2018 Marks the 53rd anniversary of the Huntington Summer Arts Festival. From June 26th through August 12th, six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday touring artists and ensembles will be featured on the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park for the annual summer FREE performance festival. The Huntington Summer Arts
Although school is out for the summer, the Harborfields Central School District is still bustling with activity thanks to Harborfields Community Educational Foundation’s (HACEF) Summer Camp program. This camp offers fourday camp options for elementary and middle school students throughout the summer. Each week offers a plethora of themed programs — from Harry Potter Camp
to Wood Crafting to Summertime Science — and this year’s enrollment boasted 850 students, a number that surpassed last year’s previously recordbreaking 680. Most programs are taught by Harborfields teachers and offer fun ways for children to pursue subjects or hobbies that they gravitate to or are curious about. The STEM centered camps — like Coding, Robotics, and Intro to Video Production
— are some of the most popular of the summer and provide students with hands-on learning in a different setting. “In these camps, students are learning skills that they will carry with them,” said HACEF Camp creator and coordinator Karin Fey. “And we hope that something they learn here will help ignite the pursuit of a lifetime passion.”

Walmart Grant Received
Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine. org, Islandia, NY), a not for profit organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, recently received a $1,000 grant from Walmart. This grant will help to fund Pal-O-Mine’s J-STEP (Job-Security Through Equine Partnership) program. The J-STEP Program provides job skills training for young adults with disabilities
and focuses on wastereduction, ‘green’ living, farming, and energy conservation in the setting of a working horse farm. The J-STEP Program provides employment and vocational training, supportive job coaching, financial literacy training and other employment related training for young adults with disabilities. Pal-O-Mine founder and CEO Lisa Gatti noted that, “Our J-STEP program gives adults with disabilities the opportunity to experience a real job setting and the related responsibilities during their internship
experience. Through the J-STEP program, the interns are trained for 2025 hours a week supported by job coaches providing essential mentoring and encouragement. Over the past several years and because of the generosity of corporate donors such as Walmart, we have been able to steadily expand our program giving more adults an employment opportunity with Pal-O-Mine. We now have approximately 28 individuals participating in J-STEP each year.”

The Hampton Classic will be held at the 65-acre show grounds located off
Montauk Highway, Route 27 at 240 Snake Hollow Road in Bridgehampton, NY. The Jump For Charity event, being presented by Sea Shore Stables, will pair each charity with randomly selected team captains and riders who will compete to win prizes for their assigned charities. Everyone can help support the charities by purchasing a Jump For Charity Hat which are being pre-sold online and onsite at the show for $50 each. One hundred percent (100%) of proceeds from the sale of hats, as well as a percentage of select souvenir items,

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers
In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of a Presidential Order that mandated the integration of the United States armed forces, youngsters from The Tri Community and Youth Agency (Tri CYA), The Academy Charter School and Hofstra University’s Summer Camp program participated in an wide ranging educational seminar that examined President Harry Truman’s historic decision and its continuing impact on American society. NYU historian Dr. Jeffrey Sammons, an expert in African-American and U.S.
military history, explained to the youngsters that prior to the issuing of Executive Order 9981, African Americans were segregated into separate units from their white counterparts. In many instances, these units were assigned menial tasks in the rear and rarely were permitted to enter combat. Dr. Sammons stated, “On July 26th, 1948, President Harry S. Truman, less than three years after an Allied victory over Nazism, fascism, and racism in which black soldiers fought and died for freedom and democracy abroad and at

For the upcoming school year, the Harborfields Central School District has brought on four new district administrators - Ms. Allison Joyce, Harborfields High School assistant principal; Ms. Maureen Raynor, executive director for human resources and instructional services; Ms. Rose Scammell, special education chairperson; and Dr. Robyn Tsoikos, assistant director for pupil personnel services. Ms. Joyce joins the Harborfields district after more than seven years serving the Commack School District, where she was an accomplished secondary social studies teacher. Her role became effective on July 1st. Ms. Raynor returns to
Harborfields after serving as a high school assistant principal in the Kings Park School District from 20162018. Prior to this, she was part of the Harborfields community as a math teacher from 2007-2016. During that time, she also served as a teacher on special assignment in the district office. Her role became effective July 16th. Ms. Scammell has served as the clinical administrator with ACLDChildren’s Services for the past 13 years and has gained the invaluable experience needed to make her the perfect candidate for the position of special education chairperson. In addition, she served as a speech therapist and speech evaluator for ACLD.
Her new role came into effect on July 1st. Dr. Tsoikos comes to Harborfields after serving as a special education administrator in the Rocky Point School District. In addition to her experience there, she had extensive experience as a special education teacher in the Herricks School District. Her role became effective February 2018. “We look forward to the 2018-2019 school year and beyond with these exceptional administrators,” said Dr. Rory Manning, assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and administration, “and are excited to have them become integral parts of the Harborfields family.”

I have seen the best we can be and the worst we can be. I have seen a military proud of its diversity and one still wrestling with racism, reflecting a nation that is still struggling with bigotry. In serving my country as an Army officer, I was equally proud of having served in the struggle for racial and gender equality. President Truman’s executive order
started that journey some 70 years ago, but each one of us must continue to strive every day to meet its objectives.” An equally proud veteran joining the Councilwoman was Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory who enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1993. Soon after, he was accepted to Officer Candidate School (OCS). After completion of OCS, Lieutenant Gregory was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery. He would later make his own history by becoming the first person of color in history to be elected Majority Leader

Hi there readers! This is Norton von Spudley, flitting in for my mommy, Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, famed columnist and editor extraordinaire {she made me write that}. You may recall my name being mentioned from time to time in a handful of articles, but I’ve never been given the opportunity to put fin to keyboard and “step in” for In Step - until today. From what I hear, my predecessor, the beloved Buddy the Betta, was quite the regular contributor, even having his name grace the staff box as a guest columnist for a period of time. While I’m certainly no Buddy, I’d like to think I have my own unique charm to bring to the paper. Still a baby by betta fish standards, I’ve resided with my human for nearly two years already, and still going strong! Our story began back in November of 2016, following the passing of Buddy just a few days prior to Thanksgiving. As I darted to and fro in my tiny

betta bowl at the local pet store, a mere speck of a fish, I spotted the girl who would come to adopt me. As she peered through the plastic, fascinated by my deep blue hue and pointy nose, I waved my sheer fins ecstatically and stared intently into her face. It was love at first sight. Fast forward approximately one year, eight months, one week and four days later {fish keep impeccable time}, and our lives have been enriched by each other’s company - well, on the rare occasions she’s actually home of course. Most days have been spent examining my minithermometer {still waiting on a replacement for that, by the way}, combing the gravel for rogue bits of food and lunging out of the water at any who dare peer too closely into my bowl. And then there’s bath time, the dreaded uprooting of my dear plant and redecorating of my abode. As soon as I see the big yellow scoop come out, I flatten myself against the side of the container and refuse
to budge. Feeding times are another nuisance, as my human still insists on crushing my pellets into bits, forcing me to chase my tail for crumbs before they settle on the bottom, never to be seen again. But alas, I’m just a tiny curmudgeon of a fish, always looking for something to gripe about. Truth is, we are a match made in heaven, both preferring our solitude and possessing a bit of that OCD need to clean up our surroundings constantly. At the end of the day, she waves goodnight and turns off my desk lamp, and we part as friends . . . until the morning comes, and sleepyhead decides to hit snooze a few too many times, delaying my breakfast. Ah, the life of a fish. Eat, sleep, swim laps. Repeat. And on Fridays in August when my mommy dearest is drained of ideas for her column, I write. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, dear readers. Hope the rest of your summer goes swimmingly.

Though his bearing might give the impression of his being a well-seasoned LIRR iron bender, he’s not, he’s a sculptor and the only iron he bends makes sculptures and has nothing to do with tracks. If you’d like proof of that, all you need do is drop by the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium to witness the results of the artist’s most recent creative adventure. Massive shovel birds and giant riveted finned fish not only cause visitors of all

Forget the fireworks! Independence Day came early to Long Island this year and the real stars of the shows were the furry and finned participants in the Suffolk Federal’s Spectacular All American Pet Paw-Rade & Adoption Celebration. The “Paw-Rade” attracted plenty of spectators who lined up to watch four-legged models strut down the “catwalk” to show off their “All American” themed patriotic outfits. But, this event wasn’t just limited to canines, ferrets and even a fish were all about the red, white and blue. Spectator kittens watched from the sidelines while the “Pupparrazzi” made sure to get in on the action. And every furry and finned fashionista went home with a Celebrity Swag Bag designed by Suffolk Federal and filled with an abundance of fun gifts and surprises. Suffolk Federal capped off the wildly successful event by donating over $3,000 to local animal rescue and welfare charities who were in attendance to support their work and
their missions. In addition, an abundance of food and pet supplies were collected and donated to Baxter’s Pet Pantry through Long Island Cares - the Harry Chapin Food Bank to provide support to family pets in need through their network. Many animals found new homes following their freedom strut including Dory the Fish who was adopted by a young boy who traveled all the way from Massachusetts for the free outing. Reef Scape Aquatics of Huntington donated the little pet and even provided a take-home aquarium for Dory’s new adventure. In addition to the Pet “Paw-Rade” the day included an array of funfilled activities for families and pets alike including: • Free BBQ Luncheon, Refreshments and Ice Cream for Guests • Live Music with DJ • “Crack the Safe” and Raffle Prizes for Furry Family Members • Face Painting • PetPlan® Pet Insurance Information “We had so much fun
during our All American Pet Paw-Rade and Celebration. We are grateful for the rescues and organizations who participated in the event and helped make it such a success,” explained Ralph D. Michael Tapogna is a 44 year-old fine artist and stone mason who resides in Port Townsend, Washington with his wife, Catherine Leporati. They are the parents of a ten year old boy who is on the autistic spectrum. Presently, Mike is over halfway through a crosscountry bicycle journey to raise awareness and funds for autism research. He just made Wisconsin having covered over 2,150 miles, and has already raised close to $12,000 for Seattle Children’s Hospital Autism Unit where his son was diagnosed. Mike is traveling alone, but he has stayed at several Warm Showers houses, a cooperative of bicyclists throughout the country as well as motels and parks. He left Port Townsend on June 30th, and he plans to reach the end of his ride on August 9th at Strawberry Fields in Central Park, New York City. If you wish to donate, to help with Mike’s expenses, or to follow his daily progress on his blog there are addresses that follow below. Also, if you know anyone who can further publicize and/or support this extraordinary project please feel free to pass this on.
