The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. The Pedestrian Education Video Scholarship Competition is offered by the New York State Coalition for Transportation Safety. The competition is part of the Walk Safe Long Island campaign organized by the Long Island Health Collaborative in partnership with the Coalition and health and safety educators from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Some Long Island communities have a particularly poor driving record and are among the worst in the state.

More than 30 Suffolk County teenagers earned medals of honor at the Legislature’s 2019 Distinguished Youth Award ceremony, marking the second year of the program aimed at engaging local youth. For the 31 medal recipients, the July 17 ceremony at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge celebrated their completion of the yearlong Distinguished Youth Award program, through which youth ages 13 to 18 work with local officials and mentors, connect with their communities, and set and work toward goals for their own personal development. Participants are awarded a medal based on the number of categories they complete. A bronze medal is awarded to participants who complete two of the four program areas, while a silver medal is

our students thriving in a course that gives them the opportunity to investigate real-world topics from multiple perspectives,” said Lorraine Lupinskie, the director of social studies in Half Hollow Hills. “The course equips students with vital skills like how to collect and analyze information with accuracy and precision, develop arguments based on facts and how to effectively communicate them.” APComputer Science Principles is an introductory collegelevel computing course where students cultivate their understanding of computer science through working with data, collaborating to solve problems and developing computer programs. The interest in this course in Half Hollow Hills has expanded so much since its inception four years ago that enrollment has grown from 54 students in three sections during 2016-17 to 269 students in 11 sections in 2019-20. “It is wonderful to see our students’ interest in computer science and this course specifically grow each year,” said Ian Dunst, the district’s director of mathematics. “This is a course designed to make computer science accessible for all students, and enables them to explore

Students at Half Hollow Hills High School East and High School West have shown great interest and success in AP Seminar and AP Computer Science Principles, the two newest Advanced Placement courses offered by the College Board. During the 2018-19 school year, Half Hollow Hills offered AP Seminar for the first time; students from the district out-performed peers from across the state and globe on the AP exam. As the AP Computer Science Principles class rolls into its fourth year in the district in 2019-20, the number of students enrolling in the program has increased by almost four times the original amount from 2016-17. The AP Seminar class is the first half of the twoyear AP Capstone program, which encourages students to demonstrate critical thinking, collaboration and academic research skills. Of the 187 sophomores that took the AP Seminar course in Half Hollow Hills last year, 96.3% of them achieved scores of three or higher on the AP exam. The results in the district were significantly higher than the 73% of students who scored three or higher in New York State, or 81% achieving those scores globally. “It is wonderful to see

Bringing Positivity Into The Future The students of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District received a gold star at the No Place for Hate Recognition Ceremony for the second year in a row on June 7. No Place for Hate, a movement instated by the Anti-Defamation League, seeks to improve and maintain school climates in which all students can prosper by taking action to promote anti-bias and antibullying within the schools. Thomas J. Lahey was awarded a gold star for going above and beyond the requirements to be named a No Place for Hate School — namely, by hosting four schoolwide activities to promote kindness. Lahey’s No Place for Hate committee consists of six teachernominated students. “These students all exhibit shining character, show inclusivity to all of their peers, and are all around kind human beings,” said committee advisor and physical education teacher Michele Turchiano. Even though school was closed for these students on June 7, they still excitedly made the trek to the York College Performing Arts Center in Queens to accept a new banner that
celebrates their school’s accomplishment. “We do our best to bring everyone together, no matter what race, gender or color they are,” said Kemar, one of the committee members. “We want to bring more positivity into our future.” Students on the committee echoed each other’s sentiments, commenting that making people feel like they belong is of the utmost importance. “People may not remember you, or the things you say, but they’ll remember how you made them feel,” said committee member Yoselin. “So we’re going to keep spreading kindness and leading by example.”

The Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its annual fellowship dinner and presentation of the Spark Plug and District Award of Merit recognitions on Thursday May 27 at the Elks Lodge in Huntington. The Matinecock Scouting District serves 2,093 youth members in the Town of Huntington and in Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge in the western section of the Smithtown Township. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the District Award of Merit. In addition, other adult recognition awards were presented. The recipients had been nominated by members of their Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venture Crews and part of this was kept as a surprise until the presentations. In 2019, volunteer Scouters were surprised to be recognized for their efforts in scouting and their community with Spark Plug Awards, while the names of the three District Award of Merit recipients had previously been announced. Three scouting volunteers in the Matinecock District that received the District Award of Merit for outstanding service to Boy Scouting, their local community, and to their religious affiliation were recognized during special ceremonies as the highlight of the evening. Escorted by previous recipients of this prestigious award and presented with a plaque and a blue and silver recognition “knot”/patch to be worn on their scouting uniforms. From the Matinecock District, those recognized this year are Greg Galustain of Huntington and Helen Fricke of Deer Park
