The organization also operates a Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which gives temporary respite to families who would otherwise spend hours and even days at their children’s bedside. The corresponding Hospitality Cart, staffed by volunteers, brings refreshments and joy to the hospital rooms of children receiving hospital
care. RMHC New York Metro thrives on the participation of its volunteers from across Long Island to help families focus on what is most important: the health and well-being of their children. These children and families rely on the support of volunteers to make their days easier, and volunteers contribute to a variety of meaningful and important activities every day. Volunteers also bring joy to families through the Family Room program, opened in 2013 and serving 3,500 families every year, as well as their Meals from the Heart and Treats from the Heart Programs, which invites individuals into the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House to cook a homemade meal and delicious desserts for families. Local Students Earn County Distinguished Youth Awards Gold, Silver & Bronze Medals, Proclamations Presented In Ceremony At Suffolk Legislature General Meeting

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored four local students as Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Distinguished Youth Award (DYA). Earning the awards after completion of an extensive year-long program, they were each recognized with medals, certificates and Proclamations in a special ceremony during the presentation portion of the Legislature’s General Meeting on Tuesday, June 7 in Hauppauge. The DYA program challenges County adolescents to begin or continue their journeys of personal growth through various initiatives that provide opportunities for them to become more civically engaged in their communities. Established by Legislative Resolution 419-2017, the innovative program focuses on Volunteer Service, Personal Development, Exploration and Physical Fitness. Students commit to completing requirements in two, three or all four categories for
Bronze, Silver or Gold recognition. Each category can require up to 100 or more hours of activity that must be logged and certified. The program is open to all Suffolk County Youths between the ages of 13 and 18. Students honored from the 17th Legislative District were: Jordan Badalamenti (Gold), Kaitlyn Barraco (Silver), Gavin Bermudez (Bronze) and Carly Mineo (Bronze), all students at Walt Whitman High School in the South Huntington School District. “I commend all of these remarkable students for their commitment and enthusiasm,” said Legislator Donnelly. “They demonstrated initiative in embarking on the program and dedication in sticking with it to completion. They should be very proud of themselves and are truly deserving of recognition.” A second class of Distinguished Youth Award Recipients will honored before a general meeting of the Legislature this fall.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Awarded $7,500 Grant To Support Its Veterans And Their Families

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine. org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, announced that it is the recipient of a $7,500 grant from Suffolk County. The grant, which was awarded by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, will be used by Pal-O-Mine to help fund the organization’s programs for veterans and their families. “Suffolk County’s generous grant to PalO-Mine comes at an especially critical time when more veterans are seeking programs to help them better understand their emotional and physical trauma,” said
Pal-O-Mine CEO and Founder Lisa Gatti. “Clinical studies and human experience has demonstrated the special ability of horses to help people heal and grow. As a designated Eagala Military Services Provider, we are able to provide therapy sessions and wellness events to our military community with staff who are credentialed in this international model. Pal-O-Mine has programs for veterans who served in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan, and in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom, as well as activeduty service members. These programs are also intended to help veterans’ family members. About Pal-O-Mine Founded in 1995 by

During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest. Over the past two and a half years, the pandemic has put a significant strain on the supplemental food supply chain. In fiscal year 2020-2021, Island Harvest Food Bank distributed more than 18 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 15 million meals – to Long Islanders facing food insecurity. That’s an 83%
increase over fiscal year 2018-2019. “While summer is often a time of plenty for most of us, many Long Island families continue to struggle to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Island Harvest Food Bank is once again pleased to team up with PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for the second annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection events this summer to help address the needs of Long Islanders who continue to struggle with food insecurity. We are exceptionally grateful to PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for their caring and generosity now and throughout the year.” PSEG Long Island also kicked off the campaign with a $1,000 donation. Combined with the Stop & Shop gift cards, these donations make up the first
4,000 meals collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative. Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals. Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate non-perishable food items. Collection bins and a contactless, drive-thru, drop-off option will be available at each location. PSEG Long Island, Island Harvest Food Bank and Stop & Shop has kicked off PSEG Long Island’s second annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive. Seven PSEG Long Island Power to Feed Long Island employee ambassadors, along with anti-hunger advocates and government officials gathered at the Stop & Shop in Massapequa to donate food and money, and call on Long Islanders to take action to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, collection drives will be set up at several Stop & Shop supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate non-perishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 30,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Island families struggling to put food on their tables. This goal recognizes Island Harvest’s 30th anniversary this year. “We are kicking off our second annual Power to Feed Long Island campaign with Island Harvest and Stop & Shop because hundreds of thousands of our neighbors still need our help,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Last year, PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island created a venue for Long Islanders to help fight food insecurity, and they responded with bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food for their neighbors. Thanks to their generosity, we exceeded our 21,000-meal goal in 2021. This year, we are proud to donate and we encourage everyone to continue to be part of the solution, because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. PSEG Long Island’s ‘Power To Feed Long Island’ Returns To Fight Hunger

Harborfields Earns Fifth Consecutive No Place For Hate Designation For the fifth consecutive year, all four schools in the Harborfields Central School District – Harborfields High School, Oldfield Middle School, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School and Washington Drive Primary School – earned No Place for Hate recognition from the Anti-Defamation League. Washington Drive’s students participated this year in Start with Hello, Allergy Awareness Month, World Down Syndrome Day, World Autism Awareness Day and P.S. I Love You Day. “In order to be recognized as a No Place for Hate school, we incorporated lessons designed to promote inclusivity and celebrate diversity into our curriculum,” Washington Drive Assistant Principal Kerry Neira said. “We emphasize the importance of social emotional awareness and capabilities so students are equipped to navigate the school environment with a sense of community and belonging.” TJL’s No Place for Hate Committee was comprised this year of 13 students, multiple staff members
and three parents who worked collaboratively to develop and facilitate five buildingwide activities, starting with a schoolwide Peaceful School Bus activity promoting respect for all students and bus drivers on the school bus. For Black History Month, students wrote a collaborative poem promoting health, wellness and inclusion, and performed the poem at the district’s Black History Month Celebration. NPFH Committee members also researched other health and wellness tips and shared them on the morning announcements. For the third project, Tree of Respect, NPFH students collaborated to find a book to read and record and share with all students. Talking points were provided for all classes and every student received a paper “hand” to write on, noting something that exemplifies respect. The hands were hung on TJL’s “tree of respect” in the hallway between the cafeteria doors. An Identity and Culture activity took place in art. Students were read the book “Parker Looks Up,” then created self-portraits to showcase
their unique qualities and differences. The fifth activity featured six classes writing twice to pen pals at a school in San Diego and receiving responses. A relationship was cultivated and TJL plans to continue the relationship and pen pal activity next year. “We couldn’t be prouder of the students and the amazing job they did in leading this committee and running the activities throughout the year,” Principal Mary Williams and Assistant Principal Andrea Horowitz said. “What makes this achievement so special is that our students were such an integral part of the process.” At Harborfields High School, No Place for Hate activities included HF Unites 4 Ukraine, in which the student groups joined forces to promote awareness and collect support, essential items and monetary donations for refugees in Ukraine; and the CeReal Challenge, which collected cereal boxes to be donated for distribution to the community’s families in need.

Northport High School Law Students Participate In EDNY Summer Justice Institute

Incoming 10th graders Kailey Ciszek, Kate Karp, Lily Eagen and Caitlyn Murphy as well as incoming 11th graders Molly Zambri, Maia Kramer, Sadie Callaghan and Kaden Sposato attended the week-long event. Officially titled “Justice Institute: Crime, the Constitution and the Courts,” the program is run in partnership with the Touro Law Center and the Eastern District of New York Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Throughout the week students heard presentations from federal judges, including U.S. Circuit Judge Joseph Bianco, FBI agents, Deputy U.S. Marshals, a U.S. Secret Service agent, federal prosecutors and more. Mentored by current law school students, their lessons culminated in a mock trial competition against neighboring
districts. With only a few combined hours to study the case and learn the script, students had to argue their respective sides in front of judges. Northport High School students were divided into incoming 10th graders and incoming 11th graders for their mock trial competitions. Both teams won their morning and afternoon preliminary mock trail competitions but did not compete in the final competition. When asked about her favorite part of the program, sophomore Kate Karp said, “Hearing all the different speakers and getting different perspectives,” was her favorite aspect. Sophomore Caitlyn Murphy added “I also liked that you were able to have conversation with them as well as hear from them, so you were able to learn a lot.” Junior Molly Zambri also noted that the mock trial competitions helped her “gain confidence” in her opening statements and improve her overall performance in mock trial.
Law Program Coordinator David Scott was thrilled to see the program return after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. “I knew these kids would benefit tremendously from the program. We have a great group of Northport High School students here and I am thrilled for them,” he said. The final day of the event included a presentation from keynote speaker John Tinker, plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case of Tinker v. Des Moines (1969). Mr. Tinker’s case is widely regarded as setting the precedent for student rights and free speech in America. When asked where he got his confidence to stand up for his rights came from, Mr. Tinker credited his parents as “incredibly brave people” who taught him to stand up for what he believes in. Students are looking forward to applying the skills they learned during the program to their mock trial team competitions in the fall.

(NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. There is, however, another option and it doesn’t involve taking medication. The Problem Almost 5 million people in the U.S. experience at least one migraine attack a month. More than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe disability and 91 percent of them can’t function normally during migraine attack, according to the American Migraine Study, which also
reveals that the average migraine sufferer misses two days of work per year. It’s an expense both in terms of career—lost work—and medical costs. Food-Insecure Seniors Are The Focus Pal-O-Mine Equestrian and Eastern Of Fair Sponsored By Long Island Cares Suffolk BOCES Announce Job Fair Recruiting for Full and Part-Time Positions And PSEG Long Island Long Island ‘s foodinsecure seniors are the focus of the Senior Resource Fair taking place Friday, August 12 at Long Island Cares’ Center for Community Engagement in Hauppauge. The fair is co-sponsored by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank and PSEG Long Island. The purpose of the fair is three-fold: provide increased access to nutritious food, offer takehome fresh produce at a special “farmer’s market,” and expose seniors to advocacy efforts on their behalf and the numerous resources available to them. The event takes place 9 a.m. – noon at the Center for Community Engagement, 75 Davids Drive, Hauppauge. Agencies and organizations presenting to seniors about their services and products include: • AARP • Aetna Medical Care • Alzheimer’s Association • Association for Mental Health and Wellness • Clear Captions • Common Health Care • HWCLI/SNAP • Island Hills Chorus • Melissa’s Wish • Northwell Health (Breast and Prostate Cancer Peer Education) • Ombudsman Program • PSEG Long Island • Rebuilding Together

In 2021 more than 18,000 food-insecure seniors at senior centers and housing authorities were served 166,000 meals. Both the number of seniors and meals served represented a 28% increase over 2020.
Long Island Cares provides emergency food and supplies to 250,000 Long Islanders suffering from food insecurity. In addition to the food bank location in Hauppauge and the more than 300 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other locations it provides food to, Long Island Cares operates five of its own food pantries, in Huntington Station, Lindenhurst, Hampton Bays, Freeport and Bethpage. PSEG Long Island operates the Long Island Power Authority’s transmission and distribution system under a long-term contract. PSEG Long Island is a subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. Through August 27 Juror Carol Fabricatore invited artists to enter works that captured the spirit, movement, emotions of their subject. We were looking for works inspired by life… works that conjured narratives…that took us to places we had never seen… or introduced us to people and places. Artists build their work through inspiration, references, sketches, models, underpaintings and other modes of planning. An artist’s Little Black Book is often a secret stash
of intimate expressions, innermost thoughts, and experimental techniques that lay the groundwork for their final piece. Entrants were required to submit writeups digital images, sketches, etc. that showed the evolution of each piece they entered into the show. About the juror: Carol Fabricatore is an artist in the New York City area who is a great observer of all things and likes to approach creating narrative imagery beginning with an emotional connection to an idea. She often gravitates
towards subject matter that might be seen in one’s peripheral vision or passed by on the way to something in the mainstream. She has produced art for books, magazines, newspapers, and projects for design and advertising firms. Carol has taught narrative drawing at the School of Visual Arts since 1994. She has had work in American Illustration, Communication Arts Illustration Annual, Society of Illustrators, Creative Quarterly and has won awards in the Society
of Newspaper Design, The San Francisco Show - Gold winner, Graphic Design USA; Desi Award, Graphis; Top Ten Illustrated Annual Reports & Society of Illustrators Los Angeles among many others. Smithtown Township Arts Council Inc. is a recognized 501 (c) (3) notfor-profit organization, classified as a public charity under the Internal Revenue Code. Seasonal Boat Slips Now Available At Robert Moses State Park East Marina The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that seasonal boat slips at the Robert Moses State Park East Marina are available for rent. Interested boaters can obtain an application to reserve a slip by visiting the Robert Moses State Park Office.
The Robert Moses State Park East Marina has forty (40) boat slips, which are available from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. East Marina Seasonal slips will be available on a first come, first serve basis, and will be assigned by Robert Moses State Park. In the event the marina has reached capacity, you will be placed on the wait list.
A seasonal boat slip costs $50 per foot. Slips can accommodate vessels up to 40 feet long with a maximum beam of 14 feet. Each slip has potable water, two cleats, and electric hook-up. The power source is 50 amps (50/125). Boaters must supply their own ropes, adapters, and extension cords. Each slip includes
one vehicle parking permit. No overnight visitor parking will be permitted. Boaters who rent a slip during the 2022 season will automatically be renewed for the 2023 season. Robert Moses State Park is located at the south end of the Robert Moses Causeway and can be reached by the

New York artists hail from Beacon, Brooklyn, Clinton Corners, Coram, Deer Park, East Islip, Elmhurst, Greenvale, Holtsville, Huntington Station, Jackson Heights, Kings Park, Long Beach, Patchogue, Port Jefferson, Ridge, Ronkonkoma, Smithtown, S. Huntington, St. James, Stony Brook and Syosset. Works were created using a variety of mediums including acrylic, charcoal, collage, colored pencil, gouache, graphite, ink, oil, pastel and watercolor.
