Thora (age 6) and her baby sister Willow (11 months), wanted to make a difference in the lives of animals. Thora talked to her parents about wanting to help animals in need. Their Mom and Dad spoke with Little Shelter staff and came up with an idea for the girls. for Little Shelter letting people know that’s where the money was going. The girls raised hundreds of dollars and donated it to Little Shelter for the Clear the Shelters, this past Saturday, July 23rd. The staff at Little Shelter was blown away when they showed up to donate the money. The girls were greeted by the staff and taken for a tour. They met many of the animals that the money would be helping. The money they raised was used to microchip all of the cats and dogs who were
adopted at Little Shelter that day. When the girls learned that the money would be used to help keep adopted animals safe, they were extremely excited. “To see children so dedicated to helping the animals and the community is such a wonderful thing,” stated President Maryann. Fifty-nine dogs and cats were adopted through the Clear the Shelters event. Thanks to Thora and Willow’s hard work each animal’s microchip has been paid for.

Parade Kick-Off The East Northport Fire Department Annual Parade and Fair kicks-off on Wednesday, August 3rd, at 7 p.m. with a gala parade featuring 20 fire departments from throughout Long Island, a dozen marching bands, and plenty of shiny fire engines, both modern and antique. This year’s parade route has been changed, starting at Fifth Avenue and Larkfield Road, and
heading north on Larkfield Road to the East Northport firehouse fairgrounds. The Fair runs from August 3rd through 6th, Wednesday through Friday from 7 to 11 p.m., and opening early on Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. There will be live musical entertainment from several bands on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Memoir in the Making As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous
musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.
It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. grant. The $2,949,237 Resources and Education that Support Training Opportunities within the Regional Economy (RESTORE) Grant, according to McKay, will be used to train individuals by providing them with the skills and credentials required to meet the growth in cybersecurity, manufacturing and health information technolog RESTORE is part of the federal government’s
national TechHire initiative that is funded by H1B visa fees and intended to train local workforces with the skills required by regional industry. “The RESTORE Grant will allow our college to focus new and additional resources on recognizing and empowering residents in our region with the education and training they need to develop new skills and earn higher wages,” said McKay. McKay explained that
some workers may be just starting their careers, while others may be older workers who don’t have the basic skills to allow them to assume more responsibility and reach higher paying roles. Others could also be workers who may have the competencies, but not formal credentials, to excel at a more seniorlevel job. The RESTORE Grant will provide the resources for retraining individuals

and upskilling to earn an associate’s degree and transfer to a baccalaureate program for expanded career options. Bootcamp training programs will be developed and students will prepare for online coursework while learning valuable industry and job readiness skills. McKay said the college envisions the RESTORE Grant providing training for about 350 students.
