For a quarter of a century, Star Island Yacht Club has been hosting its annual mid-summer sport fishing tournament: the Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament. This year’s tournament will take place from August 4th to 5th. With overnight fishing and expanded categories, this will be the most exciting tournament sport fishing enthusiasts and spectators will see this August on the East End. Prizes will be offered for Heaviest Mako, Heaviest Thresher and Heaviest Tuna. Once again, anglers can also bring in any species of Tuna, including Blue Fin; this gives the participants better odds of bringing in the winning catch. As a result of this expansion last year, Star Island paid out more than $150,000 in cash and prizes. Back for this year’s tournament is overnight fishing, which will allow participants to stay out overnight, in the event they did not have fish to weigh in for the first day or if they weighed in earlier and wanted to get a head start on Day Two. Although only one shark may be weighed in per day, more than one tuna may be weighed per day, as long as the anglers are in accordance with National Marine Fisheries regulations. Last year, the heaviest shark caught was a 288-pound Mako aboard Capt. Chuck Mallinson’s Joy Sea. Participants and fans will also have the opportunity to learn about these mysterious, sometimes dangerous and often misunderstood species from marine biologists who will be on-site. These marine biologists will be available to comment on the migration habits, predatory nature and the health of the species. Fishing starts at 6 a.m. on both days and ends on Friday at 6 p.m. and
on Saturday at 5 p.m. An awards ceremony will commence at the end of the tournament. Entry fee is $800 per boat. For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the tournament. Star Island wishes to advise all prospective
participants that, as per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all shark tournament participants use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively. Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for the tournament are $6.00 per foot for up to 59 feet,
$6.50 per foot for 60 to 84 feet and $7.50 per foot for 85 feet and up. Utilities are $30 for 30-amp and singlecord, 50-amp service and $50 for two-cord, 50-amp service. To make your reservation, or for more information, call 631.668.5052, or visit www.starislandyc.com.

Councilwoman Susan A. Berland received support from her colleagues on the Town Board to provide sunscreen protection for Huntington residents at 14 new locations in addition to Crab Meadow Beach. This innovative public health initiative is designed to protect Town of Huntington residents from the dangers of skin cancer and Melanoma. For under $1,600, the Town will purchase 14 additional Brightguard sunscreen dispensers along with a supply of Brightguard Eco Sport Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 for each designated location from IMPACT Melanoma, formerly known as the Melanoma Foundation of New England. The new dispensers will be installed at Asharoken Beach, Centerport Beach, Crescent Beach, Fleets Cove Beach, Gold Star Battalion Beach, Hobart Beach, Quentin Sammis/ West Neck Beach, Greenlawn Memorial Park, Heckscher Park, Ostego Park, Veterans Park, Crab Meadow Golf Course, Dix Hills Golf Course and Dix
in order to protect them from the dangers of the sun. Expanding this pilot program to 15 locations in the Town will help reduce the risk of Melanoma and other skin cancers.” More people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined over the past 30 years. Each day nearly 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer and an estimated one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer over their lifetime. Melanoma is the second most common cancer among individuals aged 15-29. The melanoma rate is rising at epidemic levels by an estimated 3% annually, making it the fastest growing form of cancer. The risk of developing Melanoma can be reduced by 50% with regular application of at least SPF 15 sunscreen during exposure to the sun. Hills Pool. The sunscreen is environmentally safe, made in America and ParaAminoBenzoic Acid (PABA) free. The need for this initiative is validated by a 2017 survey of New York residents which found that 53% of those who don’t wear sunscreen fail to do so because they simply forget and up to 85% of respondents will use free public sunscreen if available. Last summer, Councilwoman Berland worked closely with IMPACT Melanoma, to sponsor the Town’s first free sunscreen dispenser in a pilot program at Crab Meadow Beach. This dispenser, as part of IMPACT Melanoma’s Practice Safe Skin: Skin Cancer Prevention project, provides free sunscreen to beachgoers in order to protect them from the sun. “Too often residents don’t wear sunscreen because they simply forget to bring it with them,” stated Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “This skin cancer prevention project provides free sunscreen to park and beachgoers

In preparation for Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s implementation of their new Advanced Placement Capstone program, five staff members from the Elwood-Union Free School District recently attended the AP Seminar training workshop at Goucher College in Maryland. Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen Kelly-Gorman and Director of Humanities Pam Fine participated in the training as the administrators who will help to implement the program at the high school. Teachers Garrett Chesnoff, Richard Greening and Allison Peiliker also

attended in preparation for teaching the course in the fall. The training workshop focused on a number of important aspects of the program, including providing the administrators and teachers with a walkthrough of the course and end-of-course assessments, specific teaching strategies and best practices and the curriculum framework of the program. College Board’s AP Capstone is a program that allows students to dive into independent research and collaborative teamwork, while strengthening their communication skills. Comprised of two AP
courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, the program transforms students into collaborative scholars and gives them the opportunity to make logical, evidencebased decisions, better preparing them for college. Elwood-John H. Glenn High School will launch the first of the two courses, AP Seminar, in September. It will be offered through the English department to mainly 10th-grade students. “We are looking forward to increasing opportunities for our students at Elwood John H. Harrison, 88, who answered his last alarm on July 21st, 2017. Over the past 58 years, Harrison served the Melville Fire Department as a firefighter, Chief and Commissioner. Harrison has a long history with the fire service dating back to 1947 when he joined the Setauket Fire Department, following in the boot prints of his father Fredrick Harrison. In 1959, Harrison joined the Melville Fire Department, serving as a Hose Company # 1 officer and moving up the ranks as Assistant Chief. recognized the importance of increasing the level of emergency medical care provided to the residents of the community. Under his leadership, Melville soon became the first Suffolk County fire department to place an Advanced Life Support unit into operation. Harrison was also instrumental in bringing the “Jaws of Life” rescue tool to Melville in 1973, becoming the first Department in Suffolk County equipped with this life-saving device. Harrison was the former Assistant Director of the Physical Plant at Farmingdale State College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and was later transferred to the Occupation Force in Germany, where he served in the Army Corps of Engineers until his

discharge in 1952. Upon returning to Long Island, Harrison was hired by Country Gardens as their head foreman. During his 15 years with the company, he supervised many large projects in the metropolitan area including the 1964 World’s Fair, landscaping the Long Island State Parkway System and building of the Dix Hills Golf Course. Harrison was elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners in 1975 and served for 20 years. He was an advocate of increasing the members training and providing the department with the most up-to-date equipment. While serving as Board Chairman, he proudly swore in his son James as Chief of the Department in 1994. Fred Harrison will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to the Melville Fire Department. Harrison was the devoted husband of the late Maryann Harrison. He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn, and children Catherine Moore (Raymond), James (Debra), Laurie Slade (Steven), and stepsons Matthew, Brian (Marisa), and Doug (Tricia) LoPalo. A Funny Thing Happened A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close
for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

Going Green at School But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom.
One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000
pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students
can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to
discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Artists Show Their Colors Students from the Harborfields Central School District have beat the heat this summer with creative, fun and educational programs offered through HACEF’s (Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation) Summer Camp program. The program, which offers a variety of different four-day camp options, recently held two special art exhibits for those in the art camps to showcase their final work for friends and family. The HACEF Camp program has experienced unprecedented growth in the last few years — with a total of nearly 690 students registered this summer, a number that surpassed last year’s record-breaking 570. The first exhibit on July 13th, featured the creations of campers who took part in the Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, Exploring 2-D & 3-D Art, Creative Photography, and Painting “Al Fresco” camp sessions. A field trip to Northport Village, was
the inspiration behind the photographs and watercolors of the campers in Creative Photography and Painting “Al Fresco.” Campers in the Drawing, Painting and Sculpture camp also showed off their artistic abilities with their colorful self-portraits. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni attended the first exhibit where he spoke with the campers and learned about the pieces they created. “Dr. Ianni was so great with the kids, engaging them in conversation about their projects and being very impressed,” said Karin Fey, who—along with Emma Hendler— are the HACEF Summer Camp directors. “None of this would be possible without the support from administration and the hard work of our amazing teachers, who astound us weekly with their ingenuity and creativity.” The second exhibit on July 20th, displayed the work of campers
involved in Fashion Design and another session of Exploring 2-D & 3-D Art, and Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. Fifth- through eighth-graders in Fashion Design, learned how to sketch their own line of clothing and had the option of creating a fall or spring collection under the guidance of instructor Roe Elder. In addition, third- through fifth-grade students who participated in Exploring 2-D & 3-D Art produced their own landscape paintings, T-shirts and glass light catchers. Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their
classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that
many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

For the sixth consecutive year, Huntington’s budget presentation has won recognition from the national organization representing government finance professionals. The Government Finance Officers Association recently notified the Town that it met the criteria for a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2017 Town budget. The award followed a review by a panel drawn from more than 525 professionals nationwide that assessed how the Town’s budget satisfied nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. The main factors weighed were how well the budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communication device. The panel needed to rate the budget as “proficient” in all four categories, including 14 mandatory criteria within those categories.
In documents notifying the Town of the award, the GFOA noted the award “reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting… Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.” “ G o v e r n m e n t transparency begins with helping residents understand how their tax dollars are being spent. Presenting the budget in a clear, easy-to-readand-understand format helps demonstrate that we are managing our resources properly to provide desired services while holding down taxes,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “We are proud of our budget’s clarity and how it details implementation of the Town’s prudent fiscal
policies and we appreciate the continuing recognition from this distinguished organization.” The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving more than 19,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal. The Distinguished Budget Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

These included Chicago Bears player Trevor Coston, retired Cincinnati Bengals player Onyi Momah and Elwood-H. Glenn High School graduate and Arizona Cardinals player Ifeanyi Momah. Division I, II and III teams also returned for the day to give back to their community. The players strengthened skills and ran drills with the campers in two group sessions, with ages 6-12 in the morning and ages 13-16 in the afternoon. New Principal The Harborfields Central School District’s Board of Education recently appointed Susan Kenny as the new principal of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, filling the position previously held by recent retiree, principal Marguerite Greene. Kenny began her new role in the district on July 1st and planned three “meet and greet” days for grades 3-5, one for each grade level at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School to meet the families and students of her new school community. During the first meet and greet day on July 18, Kenny introduced herself to third-grade students and their families and presented some fun facts about herself. Superintendent of
Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni, new Director of Pupil Personnel Services Theresa McGuire and Assistant Principal Mary Williams showed their support at the event where Kenny spoke about her family, her travel experiences, her volunteer work with Honor Flight Long Island and her career as an educator and administrator. Before joining Harborfields, Kenny served as an elementary assistant principal in the Garden City, Roslyn and EastportSouth Manor school districts. She was also a reading teacher in the West Babylon School District. “It was clear that Ms. Kenny’s leadership skills combined with her strong background in literacy and passion for learning, fit well with our
mission of providing our students with a world-class education, one child at a time,” said Dr. Ianni. During the event, Kenny discussed what her focus will be during the new school year and showed a video which highlighted the importance of not giving up, a concept that she wants third-, fourthand fifth-graders to take to heart. “Here at Thomas J. Lahey, we want to make sure that your children come to school feeling safe, welcomed and connected,” she said. “This year, our focus is going to be on creating an atmosphere where students can take risks, learn from failure, come up with the skills to problem solve and persevere when faced with challenges.”

The Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs Council recently presented their annual Scholarship Awards to students affiliated with the town fire and rescue services. Chiefs Council President John McDonough presented the scholarships to Alyssa Feld of Dix Hills, Alexandria Strievski of East Northport, Alexandria Boronow of Eaton’s Neck, Ryan Tschirhart of Eaton’s Neck, Douglas Knoph of Centerport, Molly Cross of Northport, and Travis Flanagan of East Northport. Alyssa is the daughter of Dix Hills Ex-Chief and Commissioner Larry Feld and is attending SUNY Farmingdale State College. Alexandria is the daughter of East Northport EMT Barbara Strievski and is attending St. Joseph’s
College. Alexandria is the daughter of Eaton’s Neck Ex-Chief Paul Boronow and is attending the University of Connecticut. Ryan is the son of Eaton’s Neck firefighter Bill Tschirhart and is attending SUNY University at Albany. Douglas is the son of Centerport firefighter John Knoph and is attending SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Molly is the daughter of Northport firefighter Robert Cross and is attending Suffolk Community College. Travis is the son of East Northport Assistant Chief Dan Flanagan and is attending Utica College. In addition, Vincent Pastore of Huntington Station received a Scholarship from the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs. The award was
accepted by his parents, Huntington Manor ExChief and Commissioner Mike Pastore and his wife Michele. The seven $500 scholarships are awarded annually in the memory of Dix Hills Chief Terry Farrell and Huntington Manor Chief Peter Nelson, both FDNY Rescue Company 4 firefighters who were killed in the line of duty on 9/11; Huntington Manor Fire Police Captain and Chaplain Richard Holst and Dix Hills Ex-Captain Walter Hessling who both died in the line of duty in 2009; Huntington Manor Ex-Chief and Commissioner Joe Lynch, Town of Huntington Supervisor’s assistant Billie Pastore, and Eaton’s Neck Assistant Chief Kevin Brandon.

Summer Arts Festival The annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival week 6 runs through Sunday, August 8th. Concert Orchestra - David Stewart Wiley (Conductor) served as Music Director & Conductor of the L.I. Philharmonic from 2001 until it closed in February, 2016. He continues to have a significant musical presence on Long Island, with education programs, summer parks concerts, and other vital events. Wiley leads up to 40 concerts a season as Music Director and Conductor of the Roanoke Symphony in Virginia. He has conducted such distinguished symphonies as Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, San Francisco and Saint Louis, among others in most U.S. states. “Music Under the Stars” marks the return by The Concert Orchestra of L. I. in an all classical program with musicians formerly members of the
L.I. Philharmonic. Mr. Wiley will have a preconcert talk introducing the Orchestra. Sunday, August 6th World Music/Classical/ Crossover Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica Quintet Referencing the exotica of composers ranging from Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich to George Gershwin, Martin Denny and John Adams, Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica performs global jazz and chamber music with world-music flavors sourced from Asia, the Middle East, the Balkans and Latin America. Led by multi-percussionist, vibraphonist and composer Brian O’Neill, the group also features Geni Skendo (bass flute/ woodwinds), Jeremy Smith (percussion), Brad Barrett (acoustic bass), and Tev Stevig (oud/ tanbur/resonator guitar). The Orchestrotica was named the 2012 “Best World Music Act” in the Boston Phoenix’s annual
readers’ poll. All performances during the Summer Arts Festival are free and held on the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park, Huntington. The festival runs through August 13th. The Summer Arts Festival is produced by the Town of Huntington and presented by the Huntington Arts Council. Canon U.S.A. is a presenting sponsor.
