FASNY Scholarship Awarded The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has awarded the 2019 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Rebecca Oltedal of Huntington Station. Oltedal received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for her volunteer service in the community from Eugene Perry, member of the FASNY Board of Directors. Oltedal plans to attend Suffolk County Community College in the fall where she intends to major in Hotel, Resort, and Tourism Management, and minor in Intelligence and Security Studies. She hopes to then transfer to Coastal Carolina University. Outside of the firehouse she participates in the Girl Scouts of America, and is a member of myriad honor societies, including National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, and National Technical Honor Society. Oltedal is one of 26 students chosen for this scholarship. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay. The Gerard J. Buckenmeyer FASNY Volunteer Scholarship program is made possible each June through the generous donations of individuals, fire departments and auxiliaries. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station), as chair of the Public Safety Committee, is pleased to inform residents that the Suffolk County Police Department is again offering its free “Crash Course in Crash Avoidance” classes for teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 18. Designed to supplement training already learned from DMV, defensive driving and driver education programs, this 2-hour course teaches new drivers how to anticipate and avoid dangerous road situations. Each session features a short classroom lecture, followed by a live demonstration on the Emergency Vehicles Operations Course (EVOC). There are 10 different
sessions to choose from between August 5 and 9, all taught at the Suffolk Police Academy, 110 Old Country Road in Westhampton. Morning classes start at 9 am, afternoon programs begin at 12 pm and sessions are filling fast. Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. Incorporating Nature Into Science During the week of July 15, Elwood Union Free School District teachers Lori Fornaro and Kevin Richards participated in the Greentree Foundation’s eighth annual Teacher Ecology Workshop. Teachers participated in lectures, field-based programs and hands-on learning experiences designed to
enhance their knowledge of Long Island’s natural world and introduce ways to incorporate nature into science curricula in Elwood. “The Greentree experience has provided me with so many ideas for outdoor science-based activities,” Mrs. Fornaro stated. “I’m excited to share my new knowledge of Long
Island’s environment, which will make our Living Environment class discussions more relevant and meaningful to my students.” Mrs. Fornaro and Mr. Richards will continue their studies throughout the school year by attending Saturday field trips across Long Island.

FIREFIGHTER HONORED FOR 50 YEARS OF SERVICE - The Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs Council recently recognized Ex-Chief William Faltin for his 50 years of active and dedicated service as a volunteer firefighter with the East Northport Fire Department. Faltin served as Chief of the Department from 1981-1983 and was the recipient of the Company One Achievement Award in 2012, where he served as Lieutenant and Captain in the 1970’s. He also was the recipient of the James Niemczyk Memorial Award twice – in 2010 and 2016, in recognition for his outstanding service to the community. Keeping Summer Minds Sharp The Northport-East Northport Union Free School District offers many enrichment camps for students to keep their minds sharp during the summer. One of the camps that recently ran, Tech Ed Camp, is one such camp that to aims challenge, excite, and motivate students to engage in STEM concepts, and introduce creative design thinking and technological skills. Students had the opportunity to engage in a hands-on and mindson experience, including projects that focus on computer integrated manufacturing, computer
science, engineering design, and robotics automation. During the camp that ran the week of July 8, campers from fourth grade through high school ages had had the opportunity to work on various projects, including using the CNC ShopBot router to create wooden signs and coding and controlling VEX robots. “Sometimes these camps really set the stage for students to be motivated to engage with engineering and computer science throughout middle and high school,” said Northport teacher and
camp advisor Tom Mauro. “They have fun, but they get to explore paths to 21st century careers.” Students intently worked on their projects all week, and some are already interested in pursuing a career in a STEM field in the future. “It’s awesome that we have access to tools that a lot of other students don’t,” said sophomore Justin Marques, who has been participating in the tech camp since he was in fourth grade. “I gained a lot of experience from these camps and hope to maybe pursue an engineering career in the future.”
Celebrating As Americans Second graders at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Central Boulevard Elementary School showcased their knowledge about the state nation when they shared projects, presentations and an “Americans We” performance on June 7. Each student showcased their state fair assignments that
included fun facts, climate information, famous people and more as a large gallery in the school’s gymnasium. Next, the entire grade came together to perform Teresa Jennings’ musical revue “Americans We” to conclude the patriotic topic. “Americans We” is a celebration of the people,
by the people and for the people. Through song, movement and dialogue the revue focuses on the American people and the roles that are served. The assembly concluded with the “Fifty States” song. Central Boulevard congratulates all of the performers on a job welldone!
