The Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting on July 14 in preparation for the 2020-21 academic year. Board members, James Tomeo and Heather Mammolito were elected to serve as the board’s president and vice president, respectively. Additionally, two new board members, Thomas Scarola and Sara Siddiqui, were sworn in by District Clerk Mary Lou Marx. Both were elected to the board by voters in June and will serve three-year terms.

www.EquityFirstFoundation.org Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.
This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.
Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding

money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit.

New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) recently announced that it is the first community practice in New York State to administer Lu177 therapy (Lutathera): the first radioactive drug approved for targeted treatment for patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). NETs form in cells that interact with the nervous system or in glands that produce hormones. These cells, called neuroendocrine cells, can be found throughout the body, but NETs are most often found in the abdomen, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Lu-177 therapy provides patients with certain cancerous NETs with a new treatment option which will positively impact healthcare by reducing morbidity and mortality
associated with cancers. Mostly available in academic hospitals, Lu177 therapy provides an accessory treatment option for patients with NETs and can be considered in metastatic neuroendocrine cancers earlier in treatment. This advancement provides a new alternative for patients who don’t respond to other treatments. The drug consists of a radioactive isotope, Lu-177, attached to dotatate- a molecule that binds to GEP-NET cells that have a molecule called a somatostatin receptor on their surface. The drug then enters these somatostatin receptorpositive tumor cells, and radiation emitted by Lu177 helps to kill the cells. “Lu-177 therapy is only the cusp of the burgeoning theranostics field where we will be able to bring state-
of-the-art personalized therapies to our patients across Long Island and beyond to improve their underlying clinical condition and quality of life,” Tony Abraham, DO, MPA, Director of PET/ CT and Theranostics said. “In addition, we are glad to provide our oncologists and referring gastroenterologists with an additional armament in the therapy options available to them to fight and conquer cancer.” Most NET patients have tumors that express somatostatin receptors and NYCBS uses an FDA approved diagnostic imaging method that uses dotatate tagged with a different radioactive element, gallium-68, to locate positive tumors using PET imaging services. “We are so excited to
bring this remarkable treatment to the patients of Long Island who have neuroendocrine tumors. We will be the only comprehensive community-based cancer center that offers this in New York State so that patients don’t have to go to a hospital to receive this treatment,” stated Jeff Vacirca MD, CEO of NYCBS.

When designing outdoor living spaces, homeowners may learn about biophilic design, an architectural concept that aims to incorporate natural elements into outdoor living spaces. Proponents of biophilic design say it satisfies an innate human need to affiliate with nature, thereby helping to reduce stress that people may experience after being stuck indoors for much of their days. Biophilic design is often part of a home interior design, but many homeowners also embrace it when designing their outdoor living spaces. For example, surrounding outdoor living areas with noninvasive plants, flowers and trees and using natural materials like wood and stone when building such spaces are great ways to embrace biophilic design and create a tension-free ambiance in outdoor living spaces.
11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning without
chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. The exciting weekendlong 2020 Over 50 Fair will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local nonprofit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island. After the 2019 event, Cynthia Sucich of The INN shared “The Over 50 Fair is an AMAZING event that focuses on the various needs of those who are...Over 50! Elwood-John H. Glenn High School 10th grader Isabella Ross was recently selected as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders, an honors-only program for high school students interested in medical field careers. As a delegate, Isabella joined students from across the country to attend a virtual three-day conference, during which she heard Nobel Laureates and National Medical of Science Winners talk about leading medical research; received advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; and learned about cuttingedge advancements in the field. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country to stay true to their dream and to provide resources to help

them as they continue on their career paths. Isabella’s nomination was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, to represent ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School based on her academic achievement,
leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine. Since a young age, Isabella has been interested in the medical field, but only after attending the conference and watching a live knee surgery was her desire to become a surgeon confirmed. “I love science and I love helping people so being able to combine the two aspects, I think would be a good career choice and something that I would continue to enjoy in the future,” she said. In addition to setting her on her career path, the conference offered Isabella a chance to share her perspective with her fellow delegates, as well as learn about medical advancements spearheaded by teenagers like herself. “You always think as a teenager, ‘what can I really do?’ but these
