Granting Wishes Sports legends and celebrities participated in the Marty Lyons Foundation’s (MLF) 30th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, July 13th, at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The event was held in support of the Foundation’s mission to grant special wishes for children with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. The day began with a special visit from Shaun Carroll, a child from Commack suffering from a debilitating illness. Shaun and his mother Diane publicly thanked The Marty Lyons Foundation for granting their family a second wish this past May, a trip to Universal Studios in Florida. Shaun’s brother, Kevin, who suffers from the same illness, was granted a wish in 2013 to go to Give Kids the World in Orlando. Another Foundation wish child, Michelle Izzo of Wantagh, and her mother Fortunata attended the awards ceremony during the evening reception, where they received special recognition. Michelle, who was diagnosed with leukemia, was granted her wish to go to Disney World in 2014 with her family. She has since undergone a heart transplant in January of this year. Foundation supporters were recognized and honored during the reception. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, received The Bill Gibney Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was renamed to honor the memory of Mr. Gibney, the first president of The Marty Lyons Foundation Board of Directors, who recently passed away. His tremendous efforts still impact the Foundation today. “Marty Lyons is an inspiration and the Foundation is doing important work for children and for families. I have been a supporter for many years and have met wish children and I have watched Marty interact with them. Receiving this recognition at the 30th annual golf event is a special moment for me,” said former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The Foundation also honored this year’s Man of the Year Bobby Jordan, President of LI Sanitation Equipment, and recognized former NFL player Erik McMillan for his “positive influence in the game of life.” The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” Lyons’ determination led to the establishment of the Foundation after

experiencing three lifealtering events in March of 1982. These events forced him to “see the frailty, unfairness and the wonder of life.” With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed The Marty Lyons Foundation in December of 1982. Since that time the Foundation has worked to keep hope alive in the hearts of thousands of children and provide support to their families. The Marty Lyons Foundation provides wishes to children aged three to 17 years old who have been diagnosed as having terminal or lifethreatening illnesses. MLF is unique in that it will consider granting a second wish to a deserving child who may need the hope and inspiration to face the battle of their lives for the second time around. Since it was established, The Marty Lyons Foundation has granted over 7,100 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. By playing a fun-filled day of golf or attending the dinner, supporters help provide the Foundation with the much needed resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. Gone Too Soon By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Everyone you meet is ﬁghting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reflection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

Many of these families suffer from poor nutrition, asthma, musculoskeletal conditions, and a lack of preventive care. All the proceeds from the “Honoring the Hands” event go toward a “Day of Health” for agricultural workers and their families, led by HRHCare, which serves more that 45,000 patients and employs nearly 250 people at its seven facilities on Long Island alone.

Nearly 150 New Yorkers came together recently to raise $65,000 in support of Long Island’s agricultural workforce at an event for the HRHCare Foundation and the Agricultural Health Fund. Taking on Autism Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern recognized the Quinto family, of Melville, during the 4th Annual Hills vs. Autism fundraiser lacrosse tournament at Half Hollow Hills High School East July 15th. Brothers Drew Quinto, 16, and Corey Quinto, 19, have shared their love for lacrosse since they were young kids. However, at just 13 years old, Drew noticed that there weren’t many opportunities for Corey, who is on the autism spectrum, to be involved in the wider social or athletic activities within the sport.

Inspired by their favorite game, the pair co-founded Hills vs. Autism, with “One Goal, One Dream” in mind: to allow all individuals the opportunity to participate in social and athletic activities so that they may reach their full potential. Hills vs. Autism makes it possible for challenger team lacrosse players to come together in a day-long tournament to compete and enhance their social and athletic skills, while also promoting awareness, tolerance and acceptance for children and young people with autism.

With the help of their parents, Allison and Paul, Hills vs. Autism has raised more than $75,000 for local autism programs. “The Quinto Family has made it possible for hundreds of talented young athletes to enhance their skills, both on and off the field. I congratulate Drew, Corey, Allison and Paul on the fourth anniversary of this commendable event, but most importantly, I thank them for the opportunities they have given so many in our communities to rise above challenges and meet their full potential.”

Ex-Chief James Feeley recently celebrated his 50th anniversary of dedicated service with the Centerport Fire Department. Feeley was recognized for his outstanding service at a department meeting, and a commemorative cake was

served in his honor. He has held the rank of Chief of the Department twice - first in 1984-1985, then went up through the officers ranks again to become Chief in 20002001. Feeley also served a

term on the Board of Fire Commissioners and started the Centerport FD Dive Team while he was Chief in 1985. He is a former EMT and served for 28 years on the Centerport Rescue Squad.

Bathing Beach Reopens Aggressive water quality clean-up efforts have paid off for the Centerport Yacht Club (CYC) Beach as it officially re-opened after being shut down seven years ago due to water quality concerns. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Legislator William R. Spencer, along with Northport Village, town and state officials, hand delivered the permit to the community and reopened the beach with a ribbon cutting ceremony! For months, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, with the oversight by the New York State Department of Health has been conducting extensive data collection at the beach and throughout the harbor complex. Over 600 tests in 20 locations at the beach have been completed since April, and the results have found that the quality of the water meets the required stringent standards, making way for the issuance of the beach permit. This great news is another result of the ongoing progress made in tackling the water quality challenges faced in the 18th Legislative District and all of Suffolk County. Northport Harbor, once the epicenter of red-tide in the Northeast, has seen substantial improvements to water quality thanks to collaborative efforts by all levels of

government and community groups to reduce pollution in the harbor complex. A big part of the progress can be attributed to the upgrades to the Northport Sewage Treatment Plant. These efforts have yielded positive

results that the beach and the entire harbor complex are benefitting from. In the last three seasons, there has been no red-tide in the harbor and the amount of nitrogen that was being released, which had been 19.4 lbs. per day, has been reduced to 7.5 lbs. per day. “Recognizing that Suffolk County and collaborating

agencies have taken steps to improve the water quality in Northport Harbor, including the establishment of the Northport Harbor Water Quality Protection Committee and upgrades to the Village of Northport waste water treatment facility and collection system under the County’s Reclaim Our Water Initiative, I am happy to announce that the bathing beach at the Centerport Yacht Club will be open for the 2015 season. I thank Legislator William Spencer for his continual and steadfast advocacy on behalf of the community,” stated County Executive Steve Bellone. The progress made in the pollution mitigation efforts can also be attributed to improvements to storm water discharge pipes at the head of the harbor. Educational programs on best practices for lawn care, provision of dog bags and street sweeping programs have all made positive contributions to reducing pollutant in the waterways. Joe Morency, past Centerport Yacht Club Commodore, stated, “Today is not just a milestone for a beach, but a milestone for the entire Huntington-Northport Harbor complex.”

Summer Strings For more than 30 years, the Elwood Union Free School District has provided a summer string program for beginners and continuing string students in third- and fourth- grade. Founder of the program and orchestra teacher Karen Gellert offers eager students lessons to

develop and hone their skills during a three-week summer program. This year, from late June to July 17th, Gellert and guest clinician Chelsea Winters worked with student musicians practicing the viola, violin and cello. To conclude the program, students

performed for their families various musical pieces from the Suzuki Violin School book including “Lightly Row” and “Song of Wind.” “I feel that it is a great opportunity for the string kids to start or to continue over the summer,” said Gellert.

The Suffolk County Police Athletic League (PAL) is again offering its reasonablypriced four-hour summer fishing trips for youths. Excursions will set sail from Captree Boat Basin in the Town of Babylon aboard the Princess II charter boat. Fishing pole and bait will be provided, plus cleaning of fish for kids. Last Hope Receives Grant and stray animals. The all– volunteer, nonprofit cares for dogs from municipal shelters, and cats from shelters as well as off the streets before seeking approved adopters. In 2014, Last Hope placed 568 cats and 260 dogs in loving, responsible homes. “The BCT grant helps our rescue to be more proactive,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope, “We can now intervene in special needs cases with veterinary aid; and, hopefully, prevent

people from making the heart-breaking decision to give up their pets; or worse, be forced to euthanize four-legged family members because of financial distress.” Community outreach, including a Fix-A- Feral program and free rabies vaccine clinics, is part of Last Hope’s mission. Having the ability to assist individuals with their owned pets occurs infrequently. “The generous BCT grant will enable us to expand our

reach. Since most of our funds must be spent on the animals in our care, we’ve only been able to help a limited number of desperate, owned pets such as a senior Poodle needing extensive dentistry or a cat suffering from kidney stones,” said Stuurman, “Thanks to BCT we’ll be able to respond to more pleas for veterinary aid.” BCT has been working since 2003 to keep the most vulnerable populations together with their pet companions

and provides grants to nonprofit organizations and animal hospices to support these efforts. All too often sick, injured or abused animals die because their caretakers can’t afford to pay for the urgent care needed to save them. When these animals are surrendered to town shelters, their medical issues are such that they may be put down there. Our tenuous economy has increased the need for veterinary assistance grants.

To apply for a BCT Veterinary Assistance Grant via Last Hope, the owner must show need such as disability, unemployment, homelessness or being a senior on a fixed income. Distinguished Service Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone presented the Suffolk Medal for Distinguished Service recently to Dr. Lee Koppelman, whose visionary work as a master planner has influenced Long Island for decades. “So much of what makes our region great can be ascribed to him,” the County Executive said at a hearing of the Suffolk County Legislature’s environmental planning and agriculture committee. “From our county’s vast open spaces to the tens of thousands of jobs located in the Hauppauge Industrial Park and the Route 110 corridor, we have Dr. Koppelman’s vision and leadership to thank. “And like most visionaries, some of his visions were a little ahead of their time,” the County Executive said. “Improved rail transit, improved mass transit, revitalized downtowns, greater diversity in housing stock. These are areas where Dr. Lee Koppelman was an often lonely voice, and now we know, he was 100 percent right.” Dr. Koppelman was Suffolk County’s first planning director, serving from 1960 to 1988 and led the Regional Planning Board for 41 years as executive director.

Stay Suffolk Campaign Launched Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, the Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission (LICVB), New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Fire Island National Seashore (FINS), Long Island Wine Council, Suffolk County Department of Parks and local and community officials jointly announced today the launch of the Stay Suffolk local tourism campaign. Stay Suffolk is designed to enhance the region’s $5.6 billion tourism industry by encouraging residents to take advantage of living in a world-renowned tourism destination, exploring all of the attractions that draw visitors from across the globe each year. The Stay Suffolk campaign will be effectuated through a variety of platforms, including a public service announcement, social media engagement and the launch of

But they do not often think of their own backyards,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “By exploring all the activities our region has to offer, you can have the vacation you want without the hassle and expense of long-distance travel. So if you’re thinking of planning a vacation later this summer or this year, think about staying local first and Stay Suffolk.” By supporting Stay Suffolk, not only can residents have a worldclass vacation, they are supporting the nearly 74,000 tourism-related jobs according to Empire State Development. “Visitors come from far and wide to Long Island’s Suffolk County to experience our beaches, historic sites, worldclass golf, attractions and quaint downtown

villages,” said Greg DeClemente, chairman of the LICVB. “There is so much here for visitors and residents to discover and we invite all to come out, to explore, to find something new, to create an adventure, or just relax and enjoy all we have to offer.” Stay Suffolk’s 30-second public service announcement encourages county residents to explore Suffolk and its amenities from Fire Island and Huntington to Orient Point and Montauk – including a thousand miles of world-class beaches, Long Island Wine Country, craft breweries and vibrant downtowns. The campaign will include an interactive social media launch, encouraging all residents who Stay Suffolk to post pictures and videos to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter of their favorite local vacation spots using the hashtag #StaySuffolk. media component will also feature fun facts and information pertaining to various Suffolk County travel destinations on a weekly basis.
