arborfields’ Oldfield Middle School received a proclamation from the Town of Huntington on July 12th in recognition of fundraising efforts that supported the purchase of a Trackchair for disabled veteran Julia Torres. Throughout the 2015-2016 school year, students, faculty and PTA members organized more than 16 fundraising initiatives in hopes of garnering $15,000 in proceeds. They actually surpassed their goal, gathering $16,000.

Building on the success of its initial year, Summer Youth Connection has begun its second season of offering a variety of free educational and recreational activities for the Town’s youth five evenings a week between July 11th and August 19th. More than 200 teenagers took part last year, and program founder Councilwoman Tracey Edwards said she hoped this year, that figure will rise to 300.The Town of Huntington is presenting the program with Suffolk County in collaboration with a variety of corporate and not-for-profit partners and community volunteers. The program is held at Walt Whitman High School from 5 to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with activities ranging from basketball and golf to creative writing, photography and robotics. Friday night the program is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is reserved for special needs youth sports activities. “Not every kid goes to camp. No every kid wants to go to camp. They want to be in their neighborhoods. They want to be here and enjoy what we have to offer,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said in addressing the teenagers and the volunteers during opening ceremonies July 12. “I was here last summer. Everybody had a happy smile. Everybody was involved. Everybody was trying new things. We look forward to another great summer this year.”

last several weeks. Months, even. I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be
rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore
than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one. Special Proclamation Harborfields’ Oldfield Middle School received a proclamation from the Town of Huntington on July 12th in recognition of fundraising efforts that supported the purchase of a Trackchair for disabled veteran Julia Torres. Principal Joanne Giordano was joined by several students to accept the honor at a town board meeting held at Town Hall. Throughout the 20152016 school year, students,
faculty and PTA members organized more than 16 fundraising initiatives in hopes of garnering $15,000 in proceeds. They actually surpassed their goal, gathering $16,000 that bought a “Zoom” Trackchair through the Independence Fund. The Trackchair is a motorized device that enhances mobility. The Independence Fund is a nonprofit organization that supports injured
and wounded veterans by providing the tools they need to achieve their independence and freedom. Oldfield Middle School presented the chair to a grateful Ms. Torres during a special gathering in May, during which students, staff members and administrators provided Independence Fund Executive Director Tommy Rieman with a $1600 check to cover the Trackchair expense.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone offered a proclamation and special congratulations on Monday, July 18th, to Huntington Station resident Stella Harubin on the occasion of her 100th
birthday. Born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on July 18th, 1916, Mrs. Harubin and her husband, Benjamin, moved to Huntington in 1949 after the birth of their first daughter. They eventually
had five children - three sons and two daughters and Mrs. Harubin now has eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren (Benjamin Harubin passed away in 1970). She has lived in Huntington for the past 67 years, and she remains an active parishioner at St. Hugh of Lincoln R.C. Church. She also was a longtime volunteer at the Carillon Nursing Home. She still insists on being the main housekeeper of her home and continues driving. As two of her sons and one of her grandsons looked on, Supervisor Petrone presented the proclamation to Mrs. Harubin, offering her congratulations and best wishes for many more happy, productive years.

Rabbi Yakov Saacks, Director of The Chai Center, announced today that Rabbi Eli Laufer has been named Scholar-inResidence, and his wife Musia Laufer, Coordinator of Special Needs Youth and Ariella’s Friendship Circle, a local chapter of today’s fastest growing Jewish organization for children with special needs. Rabbi Laufer will primarily focus on education, where he will be responsible for teaching Torah and Jewish values to all members of the Jewish community. Musia Laufer will lead the expansion of Ariella’s Friendship Circle and spearhead the creation of a vibrant sisterhood for all Jewish women in the community. Rabbi Laufer, was born and raised in the heart of the Crown Heights Jewish community home of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and the world headquarters of Chabad Lubavitch. He studied in the Oholei Torah Talmudic Seminary in Brooklyn, New York, and the Lubavitch Yeshivos in Los Angeles, California. Rabbi Laufer then served as a teacher and mentor for the Jewish community of Caracas Venezuela. He received his Rabbinical degree under the auspices of Rabbi Avrohom Hirsh Wozner,

The project would be geared toward increasing awareness and use of coastal resources and encouraging ecotourism. It would follow similar plans that have been implemented in North Hempstead and Oyster Bay to help expand the information base for the north shore of Long Island

Continued From 18 energy audits at four Town facilities that are included in the Town’s Huntington Community Microgrid proposal: Town Hall, the Village Green Activity Center, the Huntington Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Heckscher Museum. The cost to the Town is expected to be $49,763. The two privatelyowned parcels in the proposed Microgrid, the Huntington YMCA and Huntington Hospital, have also asked the Town to retain NYPA to do energy audits and will reimburse the Town for their costs. The resolution is one of three related to the Town’s entry in the New York State Energy Research and Development authority’s NY Price Stage 2 Community Grid competition (successful Stage 2 proposers will
receive grant awards for up to $1 million for design of a microgrid). The other two resolutions retain NYPA to help prepare the Town’s entry (at a cost of $38,125) and a master agreement to work with NYPA on the project. enacted three amendments to the Town zoning code with respect to affordable housing. The first amendment clarifies that Town affordable housing is intended for first-time homebuyers, unless otherwise approved by the Town Board. The second ties the resale of affordable units to the Consumer Price Index. The third allows for both full- and parttime workers to qualify for preferences given to those who work in the Town. - authorized execution of a requirements contract with Winters

The proposal removes the existing requirement of one ride per quarter acre for non-mechanical attractions such as slides, fun houses and bounce houses. Additionally, under the proposal, nonmechanical attractions would not be counted in the overall number of rides that can exist at an event. - scheduled an August 16th public hearing on amendments to the Town’s blighted property code, including strengthening the Town’s demolition procedure regarding unsafe and damaged buildings and structures.
