The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Additionally, if you are a business professional and are interested in getting involved with Rebuilding Together Long Island, the opportunity is available. RTLI is now interviewing business professionals to become an integral part of their Advisory Board and help advance their mission, whether it be through financial contributions, in-kind donations, networking capabilities or another way.

There are many ways that you can become involved with RTLI, whether that be individually or as a company! Corporate sponsors are a huge help to the organization and it can benefit your company greatly as well. Corporate sponsors are companies that make the decision to fund a RTLI project for someone in need. Their employees will be able to participate in hands on work with the project they sponsor so their company can

have the chance to take part in a team building and community leadership opportunity. When they become a corporate sponsor, companies will get to see immediate positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled individual or a family in need, while demonstrating their company’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life right here on Long Island. These sponsors will also get acknowledged on the RTLI website, in their quarterly newsletter and on social media.

On July 15, members of the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District Board of Education gathered for their annual reorganization meeting. During the meeting new trustees Larry Licopoli and Thomas Loughran, as well as reelected member Allison Noonan, were sworn in by the board counsel. Each member will serve for three years on the board. Additionally, the positions of board president and vice president were voted upon, in which David Badanes and Allison Noonan were appointed, respectively. Both were also sworn in by the board counsel. Both Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer and District Clerk Beth Nystrom took their annual oath of office, pledging to fulfil their duty in serving the district.

A native of Venezuela, Dr. Torres credits the skills he has developed to limited access to medical resources. “I grew up in a country filled with opportunities and hope. There were highly professional and skillful physicians, but Venezuela always experienced scarcity in medical technology, diagnostic resources, and infrastructure,” said Dr. Torres. “I had to rely purely on clinical diagnosis to provide the right medical care for my patients.” He attended medical school at Universidad de Carabobo, where he was a research assistant investigating immunology. Dr. Torres came to the United States because of its innovations in hematologyoncology. “I believe that my training and now practicing as a physician specialized in

Students from Northport, Huntington and Southampton high schools, along with the hard-hit Tug Valley High School in Kermit, West Virginia, have been working together to address the opioid crisis through a unique exchange program. Northport students, who are a part of the Students for 60,000 Club, visited West Virginia earlier this year on a service trip, and were deeply affected by the magnitude of the crisis. Club advisers Darryl St. George, Karen Paquet and Patricia Ellner coordinated a “student exchange” in which the students from West Virginia

came to visit Long Island to discuss realistic steps to solving the crisis. During the week of July 7, the students met in a variety of forums to learn from each other and discuss ways to address and solve the crisis. Students met with Congressman Thomas Suozzi and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone in Huntington to engage in discussion and also visited Southampton High School to hear from local Southampton representatives. Students asked questions, shared personal experiences and offered their thoughts on curtailing opioid use. Ideas

included creating more mental health programs in schools and providing a greater sense of purpose for students. At the end of the week, students spent some time volunteering at the Northport VA. “Seeing these students come together from all different walks of life was incredibly inspiring,” said Ms. Ellner, “and it was a reminder that our youth’s involvement in meaningful conversations with leaders, as well as their own peers, is a tremendous step towards resolving many of the serious issues that we face as Americans.”

Importance Of Representation Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently attended a meeting of the Student Council at Silas Wood Sixth Grade Center in Huntington Station to speak with students about the importance of representation in government. The student council members were elected by their peers to represent them

on student-related matters at Silas Wood, a school in the South Huntington School District. Legislator Donnelly answered questions about his job as a County Legislator, talked about the different levels of government and reminded the students that elected officials are always “responsible to the people.” Legislator Donnelly then gave each student a Suffolk
