For the third year, five talented Long Island music students will receive a unique opportunity to study and perform this summer at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program was developed by Usdan Center in 2011 and supported with a charitable grant from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The Usdan Center/Bethpage Scholars in the Arts program gives accomplished students who otherwise couldn’t attend Usdan, the opportunity to study at the country’s largest notfor-profit summer arts day camp. The students were chosen for their fine musicianship and for their achievements as outstanding representatives of their communities. Usdan’s Executive Director, Dale Lewis, recently spoke of the program’s track record of success: “We are proud to continue this unique partnership with Bethpage Federal Credit Union, one of our region’s most prominent leaders in corporate philanthropy. Kirk Kordeleski, President and CEO, and his wonderful staff, have given a great opportunity to talented young Long Island musicians, and we are delighted to continue this wonderful collaboration.” Kerry Discioarro, Coordinator of the program, adds “We are particularly excited about this year’s students, who combine amazing qualities of musical talent, academic excellence and fine character.” The Usdan/Bethpage program is unique in that five Bethpage community branches will, in effect, “adopt” one of the program’s students, with each receiving recognition in their Bethpage community branch for the remainder
of the year. The students were introduced to their Bethpage branch sponsors at a June reception at Usdan Center. “Bethpage is proud supporter of Usdan and its many invaluable initiatives and programs that offer countless benefits to the Long Island community and its many young artists,” said Kirk Kordeleski, President & CEO, Bethpage. “This unique scholarship program provides five deserving art students, who otherwise would not be able to do so, the opportunity to study on the world-class Usdan campus. I am very excited for each of them.” The winners of the Usdan/Bethpage Scholar in the Arts program are: from Huntington, Jordan Williams, a Junior at Elwood John Glenn High School. He will study Trumpet and Chorus at Usdan, performing this summer with Band IV; from Melville, Cara Jacobson is a Junior at Half Hollow Hills East High School. She comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern, and will perform with the Senior Chorus and the Select Chamber Choir. From North Babylon, Abraham Pierre is an Eighth Grade student at Robert Moses Middle School. He will study Tenor Saxophone this summer, and will perform with Band IV and in the Jazz Ensemble as well; from Commack, Joseph Tanay-Noto is a Junior at Commack High School. A cellist, he comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern and will perform with Orchestra IV and the Senior Chorus; and from Levittown, Jordi Ariel Lotito is a Senior at WT Clarke High School. A violinist, she comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern, and will perform with Orchestra IV and the Senior Chorus.

His eyes are shining as he looks at me. “So happy to see you once again,” I exclaim. His face lights up. He apologizes for forgetting my name. That’s O.K. – I reply

I listen intently while he recounts his weekend visit with family, Grateful for their concern but content to live on his own – he explains. A small apartment in an urban town Insures he is still viable in spite of his years. A bus to board, A community of familiarity reassures him of his independence. Minutes fly by – chores to finish before the end of my day. He reaches for my hand and says “thank you” and I knew what he meant. His eyes conveyed gratitude for my time, and when he smiled, I witnessed a glimmer of a younger man. The sentiment “take care” is spoken, he softly says he’s hopes he can visit soon. Once again, he smiles. “I’ll be looking for you,” I say and I return the smile. Purpose, love, confident you still count. Such a small gesture, this giving of time, Never the less a ‘gift’ to someone in the sunset of their years.

such a source of stress? Used to be, you could throw whatever you wanted into a suitcase, head to the airport shortly before flight time, have your family see you off at the gate and be on your way. Not so much anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the added security. It just seems like, in an effort to make air travel safer for all, it has become extremely inconvenient for most. But, short of taking a transAtlantic cruise, it still serves as the quickest, most viable option to get where you want to go. So that leaves us to suck it up and deal with whatever
this process has proven to be quite complicated, what with all the new rules and regulations – carry-on vs. checked baggage, ounces of liquids, Ziploc bags, and on and on… I must say, this is one time when the wealth of information available on the Internet has proven to be pretty useful. Nothing like hearing tips from those who have been there and done that already. But still, at the end of the day, once all the criteria are comprehended, there is still the small matter of fitting everything into one suitcase, preferably one that weighs
it? Unless you’re traveling to some remote Third World country, chances are you will be able to purchase anything that may have been left behind. It just may not be quite like the comforts of home that we’re used to, that’s all. By the time you read this, I will have (hopefully) figured out how to condense the mountain of “stuff” piled in the corner of my room into my suitcase and carry-on, preferably in a TSA-approved, somewhat convenient manner so as to not give myself a hernia when picking it up. One can only hope.

Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys. Fire Island also has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. They are the most crucial part to Fire Island’s environment. Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature. These fourlegged gentle giants
scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple. Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island. Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous. Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive. Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated. Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength. These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything from the smallest tick to the largest shark can be found along the Fire Island National Seashore. In my 6 years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday. Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls. Types of marine life aren’t the only animals with a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

On July 2nd, several members of the Oceanside and Cold Spring Harbor High School robotics teams received a tour of FESTO’s facility in Hauppauge. The two teams were chosen as winners of FESTO’s Facebook photo contest, in which they posted photos of team members and the robot they used in this year’s Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. The teams’ photos received the most “likes,” earning them a visit to FESTO.
While viewing FESTO’s production facility and technology lab, students learned about factory and process automation, as they watched presentations on handling devices, design coordination, and manufacturing automation. The tour gave the students a taste of what they can expect when they enter college to continue following their hopes of being in the fields of science, technology and engineering. It also gave the students a glimpse of what could be in store after graduation and
exposed the students to the real-world applications of the technology and manufacturing field. After the tour, students enjoyed lunch and took part in a question-and-answer session with FESTO employees. FESTO Corporation has been a major sponsor of SBPLI and its FIRST Robotics programs for many years and SBPLI is so grateful for arranging this very special experience for the robotics students.
