The Blanket By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, it’s more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grass… pretty much anywhere it’s been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday. Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequa’s John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited. Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the
obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect. Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on. The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began. Ah, but there still
remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot – all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes. As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. “The next time they forecast ‘a chance’ of anything, let’s do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.” As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. It’s still a bit damp.

Holes For Hope is a fundraising event that raises money for North Shore Autism Circle and Autism Speaks that was conceived around a kitchen table almost five years ago when a group of friends came together to support one of their own, with the hope of raising awareness and funds in response to the impact that autism has had on the local North Shore community. “Friends Helping Friends” – the guiding principle at the very core of this charity event – strives to bring together the Long Island community with a common goal: helping all those impacted by a autism spectrum disorder. This group of friends took one simple idea, added a lot of hard work and determination, sprinkled in a healthy dose of friendship, laughter and love, and shook it well to create a wonderful charity event that has been labeled Holes For Hope. In just four short years of its existence, Holes for Hope has raised almost a half a million dollars in support of both national and local autism charities. The organizations that have been recipients of funds generated by Holes for Hope include Autism Speaks, Sid Jacobson JCC, Spectrum Designs, Nassau County Museum of Art, Community Mainstreaming Associates, Horseability, Camp Kehila, Be Your Best Sport Special Needs Sports Programs, and Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism, among others. In addition, three years ago, Holes For Hope created our “Friends Quilt” as the embodiment and symbol of the outing. The “Friends Quilt” mimics the quilting technique of “binding pieces of fabric together” by joining all the individuals who are now

Once in a while even children from underserved, diverse school districts get a wish come true. Thanks to the National Grid Foundation Welcome Schools and Communities Scholarship Program the wish to spend a day at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium has come true for children from approximately six underserved Long Island elementary schools. Thus far, a total of 387 students from elementary schools such as Gardner Manor in Bay Shore and Hempstead’s Jackson Main Elementary, the David Paterson School and the Franklyn School participated in the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium’s innovative hands-on environmental education programs through
generous funding from the National Grid Foundation Welcome Schools and Communities Scholarship Program. “National Grid’s generosity will ultimately enable 600 students from three disadvantaged school districts to visit the Hatchery and to learn how they can help protect the natural environment. The Scholarship Program also provides funding for the Hatchery’s unique outreach programs which will benefit approximately 150 Long Island families, thereby further educating the public about the need to preserve our natural resources,” said Steven DeSimone, Hatchery Director. The Hatchery, which after 99 years of operation as a State facility, opened as a private non-profit
educational institution in 1982. Its visitors can tour two aquarium buildings which house many species of freshwater fish, aquatic reptiles and amphibians, all native to New York. There are six outdoor ponds where brook and rainbow trout are raised and sold to enthusiasts who use them to stock their ponds. In addition to the trout ponds, the Hatchery also maintains a warm water fish pond and a turtle pond. Catch & Keep Trout Fishing is a popular addition to Hatchery activities. The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium is open year round, seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June, July and August, open until 6 p.m.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone advises persons planning on visiting Huntington Village over the next four months that portions of the Gerard Street municipal parking lot will be closed for the lot’s long-awaited, muchneeded reconstruction. The project includes resurfacing the lot for increased safety, installing a bioswale system to facilitate drainage and reconfiguring the lot to add spaces. While the lot will be closed to cars, pedestrian walkways will remain open to provide access to businesses that face the parking lot. During construction, access to the open portion of the lot will be limited to Gerard Street. Motorists seeking
alternative parking locations can refer to the map in a Village Parking brochure that is available at Town Hall, at local libraries and at participating Village stores. They can also download the map from the Town’s website at http://www.huntingtonny. gov/parking-map. To ease availability of parking for shoppers, the Town is encouraging merchants and business owners to ask their employees to park at Mill Dam Park. The Town’s HART bus system will be running shuttle buses from the park to selected stops in the Village, with increased service during peak employee arrival and departure times. The shuttle is free and available to anyone, not just employees.
The shuttle will operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday. During morning and evening peak hours – 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. – the shuttle will operate at 15-minute intervals. During off-peak times, the shuttle will operate at halfhour intervals. The Town is also working with the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, the Huntington Village Business Improvement District and the Paramount Theater to explore other parking options for people who work in the Village. “I appreciate everybody’s patience and understanding as we undertake this important and necessary project,” Supervisor Petrone said.

Each of the sponsors who make a donation to this quilt see their names added year after year as a continuing pledge, not only to “grow” the quilt, but also to achieve the goal of making a difference in the lives of those who have given way more than can ever be returned. The 2013 “Friends Quilt” raised $10,000, all of which was directly donated to Spectrum Designs at their office in Port Washington on October 19th, 2013. The purpose of these funds was to provide assistance so that they can hire more full-time employees and continue their goal of creating vocational opportunities for young adults with special needs.

Preserving Our Land preservation on this little Barrier Island. Hurricane Sandy effectively cleaned the area out, giving way to the rise of many species that signal a healthy ecosystem. On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to flourish. This is a good thing because the presence of frogs have always meant a thriving environment teeming with food, vegetation and, most importantly, other healthy wildlife. Dolphins are becoming an ever present fixture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three.

A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn. They will be coming with a dumpster and then the moving truck. She feels as if her life is now running quite amuck. She hurries to another pile and opens the next box. A blond curl tied with ribbon - it’s the second baby’s locks. Someone picks up an old knickknack and offers her ‘a buck.’ And now she feels as though she’s been truly struck.

You can’t keep all these things they tell her - there just isn’t that much room. The new place will be better for you; her heart fills with dread and gloom. Some photos in an album show her late husband in his youth, A letter to the tooth fairy and the third baby’s first little tooth. Roses pressed in a book to preserve their bloom, She remembers as a gift from her loving groom. She found things she had forgotten and didn’t know she had. She found handmade greeting cards “To my Mommy and my Dad.” If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad? This was her life piled up outside, she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere. Don’t make me feel like I’m a problem - I’m your mother after all. Don’t be impatient with me or bothered when I call. She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!

Headed To International Competition At Stony Brook University, intellectual excitement is an infectious condition, but it’s something faculty like to spread, not contain. That’s why professors Lori Repetti and Yejin Choi recently established SBU as one of the sites for the National Science Foundation-sponsored North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO) - a competition for US and Canadian middle and high school students - and inspired 37 students to take a qualifying exam. “We are continually on the lookout for ways to attract talent to Stony Brook University, as well as opportunities to work with the Long Island community,” says Dennis N. Assanis, Stony Brook Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. “NACLO is an ideal vehicle to do this, and will definitely be back next year.” NACLO involves a series of challenging and fun puzzles in computational linguistics that students solve during a three-hour test. No knowledge of linguistics or computing is required; the puzzles can be solved by analytic reasoning and problem-solving skills. The Open Round was held on January 30th at the Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CESAME), an interdisciplinary STEM education center on campus that hosts a range of academic year and summer activities for faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and K-12 students and teachers. One student, Brandon Epstein - a sophomore at Half Hollow Hills High School in Dix Hills, on Long Island - did exceptionally well. He advanced through the Open Round, and then placed fifth in the United States at the Invitational Round - also held at Stony Brook, tackling problems from Turkish, Hungarian, Kiswahili, the Tangkhulic family of languages, Tok Pisin, and Yidiny, as well as problems dealing with computational tools like finite state transducers and combinatorial categorial grammars. With that finish, Epstein became one of eight students selected for two US teams going to the twelfth International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) in Beijing, China, on July 21st-25th, 2014. “Brandon is a very enthusiastic young man who loves languages and solving puzzles,” says Repetti. “We are very proud of him, and pleased to have been able to provide him with an opportunity to use his skills in a
forum such as NACLO.” Epstein and the other students were mentored by faculty from multiple SBU departments. Repetti is the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Linguistics Department; she studies the history and phonology of the Romance languages, in particular Italian and Italian dialects. Choi, an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department, researches statistical approaches and computational models for Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics. The training consisted of three parts - an overview of the field of Linguistics, presented by Mark Aronoff, Distinguished Professor in the Department of
Linguistics; an introduction to the field of Computational Linguistics, by Yejin Choi; and a session on problem solving strategies, using sample questions from previous tests, which was run by Lori Repetti. “The faculty at Stony Brook went over previous NACLO problems to give us an overall feel of what we had to do, and also reviewed our knowledge of concepts in linguistics such as phonology,” Epstein says. “They were careful to make sure that we understood what was being discussed, and got us involved in what we were learning. We learned about the applications of linguistic concepts to other systems that work similarly to languages, as well as the differences between English and other languages

with respect to writing systems and word formation.” Kristen La Magna, MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching), an Education Specialist & Laboratory Manager in the SBU Biotechnology Teaching Laboratory, helped organize Stony Brook as the NACLO test site. “This is only the second year that CESAME has been involved with NACLO, and I am really happy that we have been able to recruit students who are performing at such a high level,” she says. “In addition, it is always great for the university when high school students can come and participate in something on campus. Many students don’t realize how many opportunities are available at a university so close to home. We look forward to our continued involvement, and ongoing success, with the NACLO program.” Computational linguistics is an interdisciplinary field combining language, computer science, and logic. Applications include voice recognition, text-to-voice/voice-to-text, search engines, natural language processing, translation, and computer-mediated language learning. Employers are increasingly seeking workers trained in the field. Stony Brook is ramping up to meet the burgeoning interest in the discipline. “The Linguistics Department has hired three new people in the area of Computational Linguistics,” Repetti says. “They will work with computational linguists in the Computer Science Department to create a new joint Masters degree program in Computational Linguistics. We also plan to offer courses in Computational Linguistics at the undergraduate level.” Judging from Epstein’s enthusiasm, demand should be brisk. “I enjoy that computational linguistics blends together two topics I love and am familiar with, mathematics and linguistics,” the young man says. “It is incredibly fun and very helpful to my linguistic studies.” The Long Island student is psyched for the contest. “Now that I’m on the international team for the IOL in Beijing, I feel very excited. I have corresponded with the other team members in the USA as well as Canada, and three coaches are preparing us on a weekly basis for for the competition in July. Personally, I think the IOL is great, and I can’t wait to compete in it.”

Training in the Immediate Disaster Case Management Program (IDCM) was held last month at Family & Children’s Association, one of Long Island’s largest health and human service organizations, to prepare staff and individuals from partner agencies to become Case Managers and Case Supervisors. These case managers/supervisors will be able to quickly mobilize to offer assistance in the event a presidentiallydeclared disaster and/or support is requested by the Governor. The IDCM
is a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families (ACF). Participating in the three-day training alongside Family & Children’s staff, were representatives from Hope Worldwide, the Arab American Family Support Center and several other
nonprofits. As part of the IDCM Team, Family & Children’s staff may be deployed for up to 14 days. According to Dr. Jeffrey L. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory participated in the opening day ceremony for the Shiloh Community Farmers Market at the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Wyandanch. The Shiloh Community Farmers Market, located at 221 Merritt Avenue in Wyandanch, will be open on Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. until October. Since 2012, the New Shiloh Baptist Church has worked with the Albanese Organization, Wyandanch Community Development Corporation and Sustainable Long Island to provide area residents with convenient access to locally-grown
produce. Fresh fruits and vegetables are brought in for sale by Long Island farmers: Philip Schmitt & Sons, Anderson Farms, Natural Earth Farms and Milk Pail Farms. Legislator Steve Stern lent a paw to the fourlegged residents of the 16th Legislative District Monday, July 13th, during a pet supplies drive, which benefited Little Shelter Animal Adoption Center in Huntington. Residents helped the companion animals by donating food, toys and household goods to the assist the shelter in their care for the hundreds of cats and dogs seeking their forever homes. Little Shelter is one of Long Island’s oldest nokill animal shelters. It provides medical care and rehabilitation, a spay and neuter program, as well as adoption services. The shelter also operates a pet
“soup kitchen” and offers veterinary services for those who meet income guidelines. “Little Shelter provides an invaluable service to the community through its animal rescue and placement services. Raising Funds For Camp On July 13th, Liz Holzknecht, a Mineola resident, presented a check in the amount of $3,500 to Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Ms. Holzknecht participated in the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon in Boston on June 8th as a way to raise funds and awareness for the camp. Ms. Holzknecht and her family have a special connection to Camp PaQua-Tuck. Her sister Kate attended the camp’s respite
weekends and summer sessions for eight years. On September 2013, Kate passed away at the age of 23.
